Cancer Risk: Do Hotdogs Need Warning Labels?

What's in a hotdog? Supposedly beef and sometimes turkey. But, we've all heard the rumors they're made with discarded animal innards and unfortunate rats that got to close the grinder--creepy.

Now, love them or hate them, hotdogs are a processed meat and nowadays everyone is on high-alert over mass-produced food.

That's why one health advocacy groups wants hotdogs to carry warning labels about cancer-risk.

The nonprofit Cancer Project, an offshoot of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), a group promoting meat-free diets, has filed a lawsuit in New Jersey, asking that hotdog companies label packages with colon cancer-risk warnings.

The Cancer Project likens the labels to those slapped on cigarettes, and says companies that sell hotdogs are well aware of their health risk. The group cites how nitrites and preservatives used in processed meats, such as hotdogs, lead to the development of cancer-causing carcinogens in the body.

Listen, I support the PCRM, but here's the problem, a lot of what we eat is harmful, hotdogs are only the tip of the iceberg. Should we label everything?

Labeling hot dogs? That's incredibly silly. For the most part, if you give people the information and education to interpret the already required data (nutrition label, ingredient label), it then becomes their responsibility. You can give people everything they need to make a good decision, but if they don't want to, you can't make them.

I tend to agree. Too many things we already know harm us or MAY cause cancer. I have known this about hot dogs for years.... I don't eat them but if you know the facts, it is then your decision whether to eat them.

Really to increased the number of cases, and we must see that type of incident will improve the way of helping the people, for it in findrxonline will find the solutions and other ways of offsetting it.

I'd respect vegans and their organizations (PCRM, Peta) SLIGHTLY more if they could get their heads out of their ideologies, THINK every once and a while and stop doing so many stupid things.

A lot of people at PETA and other organizations aren't vegan or even vegetarian. And what's the point of an ideological organization if you expect them to ignore their ideologies?

I am a big fan of hotdogs--even the reduced fat hotdogs taste the exact same to me. However, I have always been skeptical as to what type of meat I was consuming.

Might as well slap a warning on everything, then. EVERYTHING causes cancer, according to the "experts". Your best bet is to avoid the most carcinogenic stuff (like cigarette smoke) and eat a lot of antioxidants to counteract the damage. Bottom line: eat a hotdog at the barbecue, just be sure to eat a spinach salad along with it.

The effect of this, over the long run, is to desensitize people against all warnings.. since warnings would be everywhere. eg. warnings such as those on cigarettes would have less meaning, since its now one of thousands that are out there.

No warning needed - you just have to read the label and realize they aren't the best choice! The problem is people don't want to know what's in it - because they like the taste too much! Very similiar to the restaurants being required to post nutritional information - will it make a difference in which entrees people choose? Only time will tell.

"A lot of people at PETA and other organizations aren't vegan or even vegetarian."

In reference to the quote above... why would you support an organization that considers you a murderer. Have you been to the website? Are you just another idiot who gives them money and doesn't know what your contributing to?

educate yourself. PETA doesn't stand for the well being of animals. In fact, high ranking members have said that if all domestic animals go extinct that would be fine by them because they are a human creation. *note* your pet and part of your dinner are in that category.

Ridiculous.
