Milk Better Than Fruit Drinks at Reducing Hunger
Milk is gross. It makes me sick. And honestly, I don't know why people drink it. We don't need it. Milk is for baby cows, not humans.
Now, even though I don't like milk, it's got to be better than sugary fruits drinks, right? Make no mistake, fruits drinks are not the same as fruit juice. Juice is fresh squeezed. Drink comes in a jug marked "grape".
To answer the question, Australian scientists compared milk and fruits drinks, and discovered milk is better at staving off hunger than fruit drinks.
Printed in American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers had 34 men and women participate in two tests. One testing session involved drinking 20 ounces of fat-free milk with breakfast. In the other test participants were given 20 ounces of fruit drink. Each beverage amounted to 250 extra calories.
After breakfast, participants were asked to gauge their level of fullness during the four hours until lunch. In the end, when drinking milk people reported feeling fuller and more satisfied, and at lunchtime they ate 50 fewer calories.
Researchers believe milk's thickness, protein and lactose content could explain the prolonged feeling of satiety, which makes sense. After all, fruit drinks are nothing more than food coloring, water and high fructose corn syrup.
This doesn't however change my opinion about milk. It just proves that a natural food like milk is healthier than a fake food like fruit drink. Oh no...someone better put the Kool-Aid man on suicide watch!

Did the Aussie scientists use a fruit drink or a fruit juice? And you are right - juice is simply squeezed fruit, a drink is squeezed fruit with water and sugar added. A fruit juice is healthier than a fruit drink, though not as healthy as a fruit drink.
ReplyHonestly, I drink it full fat and it tastes great. That's why I drink it. And cream is even tastier. Yum.
ReplyI love raw milk. It's delicious and filling. I get mine from Jersey cows, so it's 5-6% butterfat instead of that watery Holstein 3.25%. I also use half-and-half and heavy whipping cream for shakes or just as a snack.
ReplyIf milk is "not for humans" then on what basis can you possibly assert that freshly squeezed juice IS for humans?
That sort of non-logic is what makes me sick.
Also, if milk doesn't cause you any gastrointestinal distress, you should enjoy it as often as you like.
I know I do. I love me some milk!
ReplyRight on with butter on top
ReplyDitto. Milk, soy/rice/cow - I enjoy them all.
ReplyThe "milk is not for humans" comment refers to the fact that it is cow's milk. We should be drinking human's milk if we want to drink milk. At the point you are willing to eat or drink anything just because you can lay your hands on it, then why don't we drink dog milk or horse milk? I imagine mot people would consider that gross, but it's a pretty arbitrary distinction to say dog milk is gross but cow milk is tasty - after all, most people wouldn't want to hug a cow, would they?
ReplyGood point, Ann.
Personally I find milk disgusting. All the "extra stuff" in it. Go to www.notmilk.com and start reading. Yuck!
ReplyI'm actually not a fan of fruit juice, either...even if it does actually have some nutritional value, it's still pretty much sugar water. I don't care much for milk, but I'll agree that it's infinitely healthier for you than fruit drinks. I remember as a kid we'd beg my dad to let us get "Li'l Hugs" at the store...not sure if they still make them, but they were little barrel-shaped plastic containers of colored sugar water. My dad always said no and insisted we could just drink either milk or real juice. It was probably a good thing...now that I look back on it, those "Li'l Hugs" were a pretty big waste of money.
ReplyDid they really need this study to figure this one out? Geez. Of course milk is more satisfying--it has protein and fat vs. pure sugar.
I didn't drink milk for years, but I started again when I was trying to get pregnant. I'm 22 weeks pregnant now and I am hooked once again. Yum! I don't do skim though - it's 1 or 2% for me.
ReplyWTF is this? I respect your opinion, but what does this have to do with anything? MILK is in EVERYTHING you eat. If you eat cheeses, some carbs, or anything along those lines, MILK is in it.....
Replyin case you didnt realize.
I am one of those people who is lactose-intolerant - I've done some research on the subject and am positive many people are lactose-intolerant but don't know they are.
Anyway, I love having cereal and making my oatmeal with milk though...so I use Rice Milk. Rice Milk has the same amount of calcium and is really satisfying as well. I would recommend trying it (although it does tend to be expensive) if you don't like cow milk. Also you could try Almond Milk or Soy Milk.
