Consumers Can't Tell Pâté from Dog Food!

Pâté is a popular French food, which is basically mashed meat, liver, fat, wine and spices. It looks like fancy meatloaf, but the kind you don't squirt ketchup on.

It's thought to be for the refined palate, but a recent taste-test may have proved otherwise!

Wine experts now claim most people can't taste the difference between pâté and dog food made with meat "not fit" for human consumption. Even the sophisticated Stephen Colbert is all mixed up.

Ever the showmen, Colbert sampled a can of Fancy Feast cat food on his show this week, saying "Not only is it delicious, it says right here. It'll make my coat silky." Although, he did complain it was too salty and then lapped water out of a bowl.

Sure, it was funny, but to be totally honest, the cat food really did look an awful lot like pâté, awful being the key word.

In the report by American Association of Wine Economists, bluntly entitled "Can People Distinguish Pâté from Dog Food?" people really can't tell the difference.

Taste-testers tried out an organic canned turkey and chicken dog food against duck liver mouse and pork liver pâté - as well as spam and liverwurst - and while participants didn't prefer the dog food, only 3 of 18 subjects were able to identify the dog food. My goodness, I just threw up in my mouth a little!

All that tells you is that the palate of most americans is completely undeveloped and unrefined. All the average american can distinguish is sweet and salt, and in the south HOT.

No wonder they can't taste the more subtle flavours, and no wonder they also complain that vegetables or fruit are too bland and tasteless.

Tells you how far people will go to "look sophisticated". No thanks! I will take plain ole me.. I don't need no stinking pâté!!! Or dog food for that matter!

I don't understand how people are supposed to be able to tell pate from dog food. It's easy to tell good pate from very bad pate, but in order to identify dog food, you have to taste dog food on a regular basis. Very bad pate sometimes do come in a clumpy mess akin to some better quality dog food.

I'm more worried about those three people knew they were eating dog food.

While most people wouldn't ever try it, I think most people have SEEN and SMELLED cat food or dog food, so it's not much of a leap to say they might be able to identify it again.

Most Americans have probably never eaten pate before, so it makes sense to me that they wouldn't know the difference between cat food and actual pate. I bet if they had actually eaten real pate before, they'd for sure be able to tell the difference.

1) GROSS!
2) Can we please retire the expression "I just threw up in my mouth?" Also quite gross, but even worse because now it's a cliche.
