Cream Eggs: Chemical Colored Cocktails
Like marshmallow Peeps, the eggs have earned a cult following, arguably edging out chocolate rabbits as the quintessential holiday treat, but some consumer groups aren't sold on them.
In 2007, companies like Cadbury and Mars pledged to reformulate their products without six food colorings linked to hyperactivity in children by the end of 2008, but as of now, they have yet to make completely good on their promise.
The colors in question are Tartrazine, Quinoline Yellow, Sunset Yellow, Carmoisine, Ponceau and Allura Red and are referred to as the "Southampton Six" named after the study associating them with hyperactivity.
Calling the situation highly irresponsible, the U.K. Food Commission's Action on Additives campaign claims many candies still contain one or more of these additives, including the Cadbury Crème Egg and some Mars products, like Starbursts.
A Mars spokesperson says they plan to continue reformulating their products and claims the company has been transparent all along. However, the Action on Additives campaign is now pushing for a mandatory ban on harmful food additives, saying its a simple plan that would force food producers to act and take the burden off parents.
Now, if you're upset by this, satisfy your bloodlust and see what happens when Peeps meet the microwave and Cadbury Crème Eggs fall on mousetraps.

Well, if the British Government says it's bad, they must be right!
No, I think simply to spite people like this I'm going to go out and buy a big box of these and enjoy them liberally.
I think intrusive know-it-all bureaucrats pose a FAR greater danger to public health and safety than chocolate eggs.
ReplyEwww. I don't buy these and never will.
ReplyI've got lots of vices, but Cadbury's don't make a cent from me. I still have a bottle of chocolates someone game me at Christmas sitting in my lounge.
But it really is high time we started looking at all the additives, preservatives, colourants and other chemicals our food is full of... and Cadbury's isn't the only at fault here.
ReplyI look forward to eating as many as I can humanly stomach. A few additives here and there makes me feel energized. In fact,I think I'll take a big chance and slug them down with some hot tea.
ReplyI'm sort of embarrassed to admit it, but I actually LOVE Cadbury Creme eggs. I don't even normally eat that many sweet things or candy, but around this time of year, I eat them a lot. One year for Valentine's Day, my husband bought me a dozen of them and put them in an egg carton, LOL. I don't eat them every day, but I probably eat one per week from Valentine's Day to Easter. I never really noticed whether or not I get hyper after eating them, but I suppose if you ate like, 6 of them at a sitting (like I USED to do back when I was fat, haha) I would imagine you'd be pretty hyper.
ReplyI look forward to have as many as I can healthy flat stomach. A addicted here and there makes me feel energized. In fact,I think I'll take a big chance and remove them down with some hot tea.
ReplyOne of my poor little granddaughters is allergic to practically everything & peeps is one of the things she can eat as a treat.. YIKES!
As for the videos.. LOVED THEM!
ReplyMy husband is addicted to Peeps. He'll eat a whole pack of them in one mouthful. He claims that he's getting over them because they've become so ubiquitous...they used to just be around at Easter but now you can get them for every holiday, so they aren't as much of a special-occasion treat anymore.
ReplyThe colours and additives in some treats, like Creme Eggs may have a small impact on adults. However, the same thing eaten by a child will have a bigger impact on their little bodies and behaviour. Eat all the Cadbury Creme eggs you like :), but try to give the kids plain chocolate. All the taste without the chemicals. Yum - I love Easter time!

Wow, I'm so glad I don't have to "worry" about eating a thousand of those gooey things this year. I've finally gotten my eating under control and I feel great!
