Family Too Fat to Work Wants More Money

I've been too sick to work, too tired to work, and I'll be honest, way too hung over to work, but NEVER would I be so ballsy or stupid enough to say, "I'm too fat to work."

A family of four in the United Kingdom, weighing a grand total of 83 stones or 1,162 pounds, says their obesity is a hereditary condition, leaving them unable to work and the $32,278.20 they receive in social assistance isn't enough to live on. They want more!

Philip Chawner, 53, and his wife Audrey, 57, both weigh 336 pounds. Their oldest daughter Samantha, 21, weighs 252 pounds and younger sister Emma, 19, weighs in at 238 pounds. Clearly, the big fat apples don't fall far from the back fat trees.

The family claims the money they get is barely enough to cover the cost of food--can't say I'm shocked--each member of the Chawner family devours 3,000 calories a day, mostly cereal, microwave pies, bacon and French fries, which clearly they're not exercising off!

Mrs. Chawner, who receives extra money each month in disability allowance for epilepsy and asthma, both due to her obesity, says the family has to eat junk food because healthy food, like fruits and vegetables, are too expensive.

Daddy Chawner is no better off. He gets money each month after developing type-2 diabetes and was on the waiting list for gastric band surgery last year, but a heart condition made him unfit for the operation.

The kids are disasters too. Samantha receives cash for being unemployed and Emma, who's training to be hairdresser, gets hardship assistance for low-income students. She also says she's to busy too exercise.

At the risk of sounding heartless, I say tough! I'm not a physics expert, but no matter what size you are, I'm pretty sure you can work a cash register, do telemarketing or at the very least, be a greeter a Wal-Mart.

I'm sorry Chawner family. I wouldn't give you a penny, or a shilling, more.

Yes, this family's obesity is hereditary for sure. The kids inherited the horrible lifestyle habits from their parents.

I agree. How often do we see that.. too often. All the shows where the "fat" parents are trying to lose weight & they have already spread the bad habits to their kids Also, there is always a way to lose weight if you want to put the effort in & work hard at it and if your health is more important to you than food.

And the kids parents inherited their lifestyle habits from their parents before them and so the vicious cycle continues and gets worse.

I feel for this family who are obviously so convinced that this is all hereditary that they are paralyzed into not exercising and not working and obviously living less of the vibrant and amazing life they could be. What a shame (for them).

Ha.. so true. That 30 grand probably goes towards one thing. Their grocery bill!

I had one reaction after reading this and looking at the pic *barf*

Genes could account for the extra 5-10 pounds over your ideal weight, not severe obesity like these folks have. I think these folks are like alot of other obese people(and like myself before I lost my weight) don't make the connection between what they're eating and their weight. If they were to take nutrition classes, and tryed to incorrpurate that along with exercise into their daily lives most of the weight would come off. Too many people use the genetic predisposition to enable poor habits and choices and as a way to absolve them from any responsibility from those choices. Yes genetics influence your biochemistry which will determine how quickly you metabolize your food, but a slow metabolism is no excuse to fuel yourself with the cruddiest food possible.

I wouldn't give them a penny either. I know it's possible to lose weight being that obese so it's time someone doesn't cut them any slack. Amazing there are people like this makes me sick but sad at the same time because I know life can be better if you eat healthier and exercise.

I'm sickened. Laziness breeds laziness. I bet if their cash supplies were cutoff until they lost the weight, they'd find a way to slim down.

My god, you only get to claim a hereditary condition if you're eating a normal amount and are still overweight. Like, if you're 5'4, eating 1800 calories, and are still massively overweight. If you're eating 3000 calories a day, no excuse.

I work 2 jobs, have 3 children, go to college AND make the dean's list every semester so far. I exercise at the YMCA at least 3 times a week, but usually it's FIVE times. If it's important enough, they'd make the time. I hope these people don't get any money. They're lazy leaches. That's alPr

I'm not exactly sure how things work in the UK, but I've always wondered why food stamps in the US aren't restricted to the produce, meat and dairy sections - and maybe bread. We already say food stamps can't cover toilet paper and tampons - both necessary too - so why not limit it even more?

In the UK, people get given a set amount of money for being unemployed, then extra for being disabled (whatever the cause); as well as extra payments to cover council tax (for local services) and children, etc.

We don't do an equivalent of food stamps: they get cash every two weeks and they can spend the money however they want - cigarettes, junk food, lottery tickets etc.

I don't know what it's like in the USA, but here, healthy food is much more expensive than junk - for example, an apple costs about 26p ($0.38), whereas a small chocolate biscuit (candy) bar costs about 12p $0.17).

Ann on 03/26/09

In the US, I'd say an apple is usually about 50 cents, while a candy bar would be anywhere from 60 cents to $1 - unless you buy in bulk or something.

I've always wondered the same thing, Ann. My sis and brother both used to work at a grocery store as checkers and they were constantly amazed at the kinds of crap that people with food stamps bought. I think there's a program called WIC (Women, Infants, Children) where you only get free low sugar cereals, peanut butter, milk, cheese, formula, fruits, vegetables, fruit juice, and a handful of other things that are considered "healthy".

I guess at this point it's not too shocking that people would operate with a complete lack of honor and accountability. What IS shocking, is that the behavior is supported. As long as people are not required to be self-reliant, they won't be. Watch how quickly they'd find the energy to work for food money if the government cut them off! This sort of systematic abuse, which takes place here in America, too, casts a negative light on the entire system and on people who are genuinely in need of help.

I agree with your central thesis: these people do not deserve extra welfare payments and need a severe reality check in terms of lifestyle and diet. It'd be a social crime to give them more welfare and support them in their destructive lifestyle.

I also, however, take umbrage with your tone... you could have discussed this issue without resorting to mockery - "Clearly, the big fat apples don't fall far from the back fat trees."

Hmmmm.... unless the parents are brother and sister, how could this be a hereditary condition? Maybe they could use that lame excuse for the daughters, but doesn't really work for the parents, does it?

Since when is 300lbs too fat to work? I had no problem working 48 hours a week when I was 360 lbs. Before my desk job, I was working 40 hours a week on a loading dock walking all day with a hand truck at 330 lbs.

300lbs is in no way "too fat to be able to work".

I feel simultaneously sorry and angry at these people. It really seems that they can't get themselves on the path to good health without professional help. Then again, the media is full of information about good nutrition and healthcare being 'free' in the UK, it is not like they can't afford to go to the doctor and start getting help.
People like this family shouldn't cheat the welfare system. They are not "too fat to work" but instead they are too lazy to try.

Jade on 03/26/09

Agreed. In the UK, you can get on a 12 week Weight Watchers or Slimming World programme for free, by just asking your doctor. You can also get free weekly support from the nurse practitioner, if you don't want to do a specific programme, or after your 12 weeks is up. There are also many local 'health walks' going on every day all over the country: again these are free.

Although genetically some of us are pre-programmed to put weight on easier than others, and because of our genetic make-up may find it harder to lose weight, this doesn't mean that we shouldn't try. It is do-able; frustratingly harder at times, but definitely do-able. And with all that free help and support available in the UK, there is no excuse.

Are you kidding? I'm disgusted. If these people are too fat to work, then hopefully those girls are too fat to reproduce because we dont need anyone else on earth that are too fat and lazy living off the government. Can I get government assistance because I feel Im to skinny to work? So stupid.

This is the kind of thing that drives me nuts. People who are perfectly capable of SUPPORTING THEMSELVES abusing a system designed to help those in need. They've adopted welfare as a LIFESTYLE. In the meantime, someone who REALLY DOES NEED additional assistance is denied - because there isn't enough to go around. Perhaps the parents are a write-off at this point - given their current medical conditions and the fact that they don't seem too interested in doing anything to change their situation. However, statistically they're not likely to be around for too long. But the two daughters... they have ABSOLUTELY NO EXCUSE. They just want a free ride through life. THEY ARE NOT TOO FAT TO WORK. This is the kind of thing that fuels the stereotypical view that fat people are lazy and inferior - well as a 'fat' person I work my ass into the ground every day just like everyone else I know (thin or not) so I can scrape together just enough to have a reasonable life. Good thing they aren't my neighbours!

Only 3000 calories? How did they get that fat on that many calories. I was expecting 8-9000 calories each.

I bet it really is a lot more than 3000 calories ... they are probably underestimating.

Reading about people like this makes me sick. How are these people too fat to work? Maybe they NEED to get jobs so they can get out of the house and away from all the junk food they pig out on all day.

The sad thing is, even if they weren't fat they probably wouldn't want jobs anyway. They're just lazy, plain and simple. Not all lazy people are fat and vice versa...these people just happen to be both.

300 lbs is not too heavy to work! Maybe they are not in good enough shape to do much manual labour, but at least they can sit at a desk and use a computer. Their welfare money should be cut off, and they should be forced to get jobs. :/

I'm all for government help and everything, but this is a little too weird for me. I think they should seek help to FIX their diets, not to aggravate it. This is just not right, and being "fat" isn't an excuse not to work and just wait with open palms (or mouths) for government help.

This is absolutetly ridiculous! There is no reason for any of them to not try and lose the weight! If the vegetables at the market are too expensive, they can grow their own at a fraction of the cost...but then again, they may be too lazy to even do that!

If there is a Curves for Women exercise facility near by, I wish they would give the women a free membership.

I am a supervisor of three Curves for Women locations. It is the largest fitness franchise in the world and they have helped so many women...women who are even heavier than these three ladies. If it helped me, it can help anyone!

I'm sorry to say this but how is it possible that people can be so downright stupid, ignorant and lazy? I come from another country but I'm now a British citizen and I feel so sorry for people like this family who have no survival skills.

Whatever happened to 'cooking from scratch' (which to an English person means putting ingredients together and then cooking them, as opposed to 'cooking' which just means sticking a ready meal into the oven)? Whatever happened to making your own bread? Whatever happened to growing your own vegetables?

I would suggest this family either learn some skills like gardening and cooking, lose tons of weight and stop having to spend so much on food, or get jobs like any other decent human being. It just shows they're not making any effort to lift themselves out of their condition. So many poor people in this country are like children it's ridiculus. The underclass or lumpenproletariat just have this culture of relying on the government and learned-helplessness, popping out kids every second without worrying about who's footing the bill. The government couldn't care less.

There is a perfect example of how this reasoning of the welfare state is detrimental to the people it claims to serve. Clearly these people would benefit from a little deprivation.

Maybe they should have pedometers attached to their ankles like criminals have tracking devices, and they should get food in amounts equal to the amount of walking they do each day! For every 10,000 steps they took, they would get $5 worth of food stamps. Then the government would know how much exercise they getting, and how much food they need! The more exercise, the more food! These disgusting pigs that call theirselves a family would start dropping the pounds off quickly, and keep moving to keep the food money coming! This could be the answer to the obesity epidemic among the poor!
