Please Read: New Community Features
New features have been added to Diet Blog that will improve the way commenting works as well as providing more of a community feel - and more interaction.
Diet Blog is over 5 years old - which, in Internet terms - makes it 'mature'. In that time we've had almost 2,500 posts, and nearly 60,000 comments. One of the most difficult aspects in this time has been dealing with spam - Diet Blog is a major target for all kinds of scams and spams - and every day we spend considerable time weeding out spam and self-promotional material.
The site is one of the few independent sites around of this size - most other larger blog sites are part of a larger media network. This means we write want we want to write - but also means that upgrades and changes are slow (basically when I get time to work on the site). To that end, here is what has changed:
- User Profiles
Rather than commenting by adding name and email every time - you can now create a User Profile. From here you can enter info about yourself, upload a picture. Other users can track your commenting etc. If you want to include your site URL - this now goes into your profile. Once logged in, you will only see a comment box - Login / Logout
On the top right of the page are links to login/logout - and to edit your profile once logged in. - Diet Blog Share: Create Your Own Post
Users can now create their own blog post in a new area called Share. The idea is to share advice, tell your story, or post a question to the wider Diet Blog community. When a new entry is added - it will be queued for moderation. These posts can be voted on and for the best posts, we will integrate them into the main Diet Blog home page.
These features are very much in beta - meaning that there will be bugs to iron out - so bear with us as we work through those.
Thanks for being a part of Diet Blog,
Jim
Jim, I love your blog & put it on my blog as one of my favorite sites. I also link to your blog often. Thx for all the good posts & this new addition is great & should be fun!
ReplyThanks. We'll see how it works out.
ReplyOpps, picture did not do too well. Here is another one & I hope it works this time. Thx again!
ReplyTesting...
Is that you in the avitar, Jody? If so, there is a typo in your screen name - you put a "5" instead of a "2" or "3" before the "1" : )
ReplyMike, that is me. Looks like when I updated the picture in the "edit profile", it hit both my posts. I think that is a compliment regarding the 5 being wrong. If it is.. THX! I need all the encouragement I can get. As much as I know I look good for my age, I still see that fat kid in the mirror from when I was younger! I guess that is what keeps me going & what keeps me trying new things & trying to improve on what I already do.
ReplyI'm new to Diet Blog but very much look forward to gleaning even more from the Community. Cool!
ReplyIt works! I had some error messages while putting together a profile but it seems I'm off to the races now!
ReplyThis is a good idea, so I will post more coment on here.
ReplyThanks.
Interesting changes, and probably for the best!
I know what you mean about fighting scams and spam. Very frustrating to me, especially since I'm not too tech savvy.

ReplyBTW, I couldn't get the "Start a topic" in the ASK seciton to work for me. Maybe it's just me.
-Steve
ReplyThanks Steven. Could you tell me more? You should be able to click "Start Topic". From there enter a title, message, and select a category. It then goes into a moderation queue.
Seems to be working so
ReplyHi there,
I got the following error when I updated my profile:
"Publish error in template 'Profile View': Error in tag: error in module Header: Publish error in template 'Header': Error in tag: Error in tag: Error in tag: Can't find template 'styles'"
Fyi,
Barbara
ReplyThanks. Got that fixed now.
ReplyI like the new format! I don't have my picture on my profile yet, but I'll try to find one to post. I'm so glad you've found a good way to get rid of the stupid spamming that goes on...it can get obnoxious sometimes.
ReplyI've read your blog for years, it truly is my favorite!
ReplyHI Jim.... I wanted to change my picture, but no matter how many times I hit browse, and select another pic, it doesn't change it. Also I cam back to add a new topic but couldn't find a button to start a new topic. am I just looking in the wrong place?
ReplyHi Cari, Thanks for the feedback and we will get the bugs worked out sorry for your trouble.
ReplyTo change pictures, you need to push the SAVE button on the profile page AFTER selecting your picture file. I've now noted this on the profile edit page.
I've added a "Start Topic" button on the right top sidebar of the profile page.
Thanks for your comments!
ReplyHi Jim.... I see the start topic button and that works fine, but even when I hit save, it still doesn't seem to be allowing me to change pictures
ReplyCould be that your image filesize is too big? Most images that come straight out of a digital camera have a huge filesize (> 1 megabyte). We often need to make these smaller before uploading them to the Internet.
ReplyNice feature, thanks for having added it. I guess it's quite convenient in more than one way.
