Top 10 Movies That Make You Hungry
With Oscar season done, I thought we could host our very own "Food Movies" Awards right here on Diet Blog. Here are 10 flicks guaranteed to make your tummy rumble.
Soul Food: Lackluster movie, easy-on-the-eyes cast (Vanessa Williams, Vivica Fox, Nia Long, Mekhi Phifer) and plenty of mouthwatering Southern fare.
Chocolat: Nominated for 5 Oscars, this 1960's story of a mother and daughter who open a chocolate shop in a small French village will most assuredly leave you hankering for chocolate. Oh, and PLEASE pronounce it CHO-CO-LAH, not CHOC-LIT.
Monsoon Wedding: I love Indian food and hence cannot leave Monsoon Wedding off the "hungry" list. Featuring feasts of Kabobs, curries and a multitude of sweets, Monsoon Wedding is a brilliant and artistically beautiful (and tasty) movie.
Bella Martha (Mostly Martha): This German film about a brilliant but obsessive chef is rich with top notch cooking. The dish descriptions alone will have you drooling. Note: Don't bother with the US adaptation, "No Reservations" - no comparison in my opinion.
Waitress: If you aren't craving a slice of pie by the end of this one, you may have the world's best willpower. Waitress also happens to be a very charming movie - well worth a rent.
Spanglish: Okay, fried egg sandwiches are one of my favorites, so no surprise that I would include this Adam Sandler flick that depicts his character constructing the perfect fried egg sandwich.. Note: The special features section of the DVD shows you how to make the immaculate sandwich from the movie.
Babettes gæstebud (Babette's Feast): This movie centers on an extravagant dinner prepared for a tiny church in 19th Century Denmark. The film really exentuates the sensuality of food as the French delicacies are so meticulously and artfully prepared.
Yin shi nan nu (Eat, Drink, Man, Women): One of Ang Lee's best films about life in a house that revolves around the ritual of an elaborate Sunday dinner. Rich with metaphor as it is with delectable far eat cuisine; this film is truly a culinary adventure.
Under the Tuscan Sun: I may have to relinquish my man card for admitting I've seen this movie. As much as the vapid storyline dragged the movie down, there is something about watching someone prepare a traditional Italian meal in Tuscany.
Mystic Pizza: I admit, I struggled for a movie to round out the top 10. It has the word "Pizza" in the title and was one of Julia Roberts' first big roles (Matt Damon also has a small part).

ReplyI totally agree about Mostly Martha... the US version is a poor substitute.
I DISAGREE about Waitress... never found either any of those pies nor the movie in the slightest bit appealing.

ReplyHow can you not include Goodfellows? Sure, it's not about food, per se, but the amount of Italian food in that makes me hungry every time I see it!
Replywaitress? nooo don't do it. HORRIBLE!! And by horrible, I actually mean PAINfully bad.
My boyfriend still uses it as an example when he's trying to explain why I shouldn't be in charge of renting movies.

ReplyMovies don't make me hungry, but there are a few out there that make me lose my appetite entirely. Like the movie "Monty Python and the Meaning of Life"...the scene with Mr. Creosote in the French restaurant after he eats the "wafer-thin" cookie. Yeah, that was pretty gross.
ReplyHow about Tortilla Soup? The father, played by Hector Elizondo, is a widow raising 3 daughters and he loves to cook. The photos of the food (mostly authentic Mexican fare) are divine! He even is appauled at one point, at what a neighbor is feeding her daughter, and he makes her special lunches to take to school.
ReplyI am now dating myself, but "Who Is Killing The Great Chefs of Europe" was one of my favorite movies and let's not forget "Willy Wonka."

Chocolat is definitely the queen of all of these movies though.
One that makes me lose my appetite is Waterboy. Funny but gross.
ReplyBig Night, with Tony Shalhoub and Stanley Tucci. Especially the "timpano" (mega lasagna) at the end.
