Forget Superfruits: Eat a Plum

plums.jpg

"Super-Fruits" are all the rage these days, promising the added health benefit of free-radical-destroying antioxidants. Blueberries, pomegranate, acai berries, blackberries -- all have been shown in studies to reduce the risk of certain physical maladies. However, what these uber-fruits also have in common -- apart from their high phytonutrient and antioxidant concentration -- is a hefty price tag.

Enter the plum. And the peach and nectarine. According to a published report on FoxNews.com, these three, shall we say, regular fruits matched or exceeded blueberries in antioxidants and phytonutrients that are associated with preventing diseases.

The report is based on a recent study at Texas AgriLife Research, where researchers judged more than 100 varieties of plums, peaches and nectarines.

These findings are of particular importance in today's economy, when the goal of eating healthy is oftentimes overridden by financial realities. Even with the best intentions to feed our body the good, healthful foods it needs, sometimes it's just not in the budget.

Thankfully, it appears to be quite possible to obtain the disease-fighting antioxidants found in high-priced "super-fruits" from more budget-friendly produce options.

Plums are my favorite. I love them! It's crazy how expensive other fruits are especially my beloved blackberries. Glad to hear the plum is a good choice of fruit.

Does this count dried plums too? You can a great big bag of them pretty cheap at Costco. They're pitted and delicious and provide fiber.

I love sweet plums! But it's just so expensive to get them in Singapore. :( Now that I know of its high nutrients, I'll do my best to eat them whenever they're available at home...

Certain fruits are sometimes hyped to contain high antioxidant values or other special powers not found in ordinary fruits. This is usually part of a marketing pitch that also tells you there is only one place you can get the “real” fruit with the special powers.
The whole foods markets are full of fruits and vegetables that can help promote good health. The main thing is to include them in your diet in a regular way along with lean protein and healthy fats.

I love plums, but there is nothing like having an acai bowl in the morning with granola fresh fruit on top. I buy from this www.acairoots.com website, if you do the math it ends up being about $1.50 per acai bowl, which is not bad for a super food meal replacement! The energy and antioxidants I get from it, are way more that what I would get from eating a whole lot of plums!

Ah yes, plums, the magical fruit. We used to have this great Italian plum tree in our backyard when we were kids. My sister and I used to eat the plums right off the tree when they were ripe and they were so delicious.

I also remember that my mom was a firm believer in prunes. If we ever had digestive issues, we were fed prunes to clear them up. Much better than synthetic fiber supplements.

Plums and in particular dried plums (prunes) have been shown in several studies to slow the rate of osteoporosis. It was thought to be due to the fact that they are high in boron, but now is thought to be by other mechanisms. An example is

Dried plums are also high in potassium which is good for those with high blood pressure.

Do not eat too many dried plums at one time, apart from the laxative effect they are quite high calorie due the sugars being concentrated on drying.

I luv Plums!! Yes they are rich in anti-oxidants, as in any bright colored fruit. Berries are my favorites.

All of these things have seasons, and prices are variable for fresh fruit if you live in an area, like me, where none of these things grow. There are times I can eat all the blackberries I want for free, I just have to visit my sister in Victoria in late August and go for a walk anywhere - they grow wild everywhere! When plums are out of season they are not any cheaper than pomegranites that are in season. The frozen wild blueberries I buy are pretty reasonable all year round. I do like to buy things at markets in the summer and freeze them to eat when they are out of season. And, some things I like to dehydrate so I can add them to cereal, muffins, etc.

Great post! I'm glad to see plums are finally getting some media attention. If I see one more acai berry "free trial" I just might lose it :-)
