Treatment at Work May Affect Heart Attack Risk

Feeling slighted these days? Like your boss just doesn't notice or appreciate your hard work? Well, our only suggestion is to either find a new job (which isn't exactly easy to do in our current economic climate), or do your best to grin and bear it. Or else.
Last year, British researchers found that people who feel as though they are always being treated unfairly at work or at home are at an increased risk of heart attack. By asking a few thousand civil service workers to rate how they feel in response to the following statement: "I often have the feeling that I am being treated unfairly," the researchers discovered that feeling unappreciated has a significant effect on a person's risk of heart attack.
In the study, the participants were asked to rate how they felt they were treated at work; based on a scale of 1 through 6 (1 being treated the most fairly and 6 being treated the least). After tracking these participants for 11 years, the results revealed a much greater incidence of heart attack in the people who believed they were treated unfairly at work than the results expressed by those who felt as though they were treated fairly.
In a time when people are losing their jobs by the thousands, it may seem foolish to consider leaving a job because you feel unappreciated. However, if you're unable to get over these feelings and, as a consequence, you place yourself at greater risk for heart problems, it may be best to take a look at the bigger picture.
Yeah, I dunno...I have a hunch that feeling underappreciated at work leads to unhealthy lifestyle decisions like excessive drinking, comfort eating, not exercising, etc....and those behaviors are what lead to heart disease.

I know this is true for sure. I have a friend who works at a heart rehabilitation center in a hospital here in denver and she says that heart attacks have increased so much in the past few months and that many of the people she sees are either laid off, worried about getting laid off, or are having general problems at work.

I know from personal experience, that when I am under pressure at work, I can feel my blood pressure rising. There is no doubt that a pleasant work place, ensures a calmer disposition
ReplyWell if feeling unappreciated increases heart attacks - my oh my - the obese don't only feel unappreciated, they are also stigmatized... wonder how many of those heart attacks attributed to merely being fat actually have more to do with the stressful emotions of being fat. ReplyHello All, I am 25 years boy working in a multinational company at Los Angeles. In these times of recession, company is thrusting a lot amount of work on us. It some times make me helpless, than getting over timed. And because of such a constant pressure since 4-5 months, a lot of changes (both physically and mentally) had occurred. I am loosing weight like hell. Also, sometimes I become too harsh on my family, which is one of the primary concerns to me. Also, I am feeling something wrong near my chest. My heart beats remains constantly high throughout my working hours due to high work pressure, and fear of deadlines. This makes me nervous all the time. And because of this, I am not able to concentrate fully on my work. So, this is harming all the way round. This stress is killing me everyday. And I am in no condition to leave the job. And all above this, I am not able to keep myself physically fit, which in my case may lead to loosing away the job. I took many leaves this month due to my unfit health. I really need help from you. Can anyone suggest a proper way to deal with it? Thanx in advance.
ReplyYou are not the only one facing these problems. Nowadays, such cases are getting too often. You need to take care of your health first. It’s the sole thing that you might never regain once you loose it. And as you said, increased heart rate due to tension, may lead you to some threatening heart problems. You should primarily consult a doctor. Get yourself checked. And try to maintain your temper while in work. Over Anxiety has and may lead you to various heart problems. So, be cautious about that.

I consulted a physician in Los Angeles regarding my increasing health problems, and the stress levels that I am passing through. Doctor insisted me to take some basic Cardiac Test like ECG and Cardiogram. I have already taken the appointment for that. But really speaking, it requires me to take leaves at my job for these tests. I am in no condition to take a leave for these tests.
ReplyNever let your work overburden you and your family as it is indirectly harming your relationships. (Which in your case is your primary concern!!). And regarding increased heart beat, it’s my personal request or advice, don’t avoid it. Be concerned about that, consult the doctor, take some basic cardiac test if required.

ReplyIn my opinion, you should get yourself checked. This is must for your health. But, as you stated regarding your situation, you need to get enrolled in some executive wellness program or something like that. That my help you tackle your time constrain.
