Autumn's Super Foods...

The fall can be a real bummer. Days get shorter and the weather gets colder. If it wasn't for football, I'd go mental!

Now if you're jonesing for the fruits of summer. Remember, autumn ushers in a bounty of delicious fall vegetables.

So, to help brighten your spirits, and your health, Glamour Magazine lists 10 powerful fall foods you should be eating and why...

Pumpkin
  • Beta carotene and carotenoids - fights heart disease
Sweet Potatoes
  • Fiber and potassium - lowers blood pressure
Beets
  • Folate, fiber, vitamin C and iron - prevents colon cancer
Mushrooms
  • Selenium and antioxidants - protects against pollution
Turkey
  • Zinc and B vitamins - wards off colds
Onions
  • Vitamin C and fiber - decreases risk of ovarian cancer
Butternut Squash
  • Potassium and vitamin B6 - boosts the immune and nervous system
Kale and Swiss Chard
  • Antioxidants and vitamin K - helps blood clot
Cranberries
  • Proanthocyanidin - prevents gum disease and benefits the urinary tract
Walnuts
  • Omega-3 fatty acids - reduces risk of heart disease
Pretty cool! But for veg-heads, like me, turkey is not on the menu. So if you're looking for veggie sources of zinc and B vitamins, consider flaxseed, soybeans and dulse--it's a sea vegetable.

I like most of the foods on that list, but I'm not a huge fan of pumpkin for some reason. I eat a lot of carrots and other orange veggies to get the beta-carotene and the carotenoids. I absolutely LOVE mushrooms, beets, cranberries, walnuts, and Swiss chard too.

I still miss garden tomatoes though. The season for those is just not long enough for me.

Great list... except for DULCE - nasty! I was cajoled into trying it while in the Maritimes a few years back. I still haven't gotten the taste out of my mouth!

That list sounds a lot like my Thanksgiving dinner. Didn't know it was so healthy! Ok, I didn't have any kale, walnuts or swiss chard, but still...
