Tesofensine: New Miracle Weight Loss Drug?

by Mike Howard

Weight loss drugs have been something of a flop. Between Acomplia being ordered off the shelves for making people mad, and the lackluster performance of the other popular weight loss drugs - there hasn't been much to celebrate for the pharmaceutical companies *cue crocodile tears.

That is until now... maybe.

An experimental drug called tesofensine is said to produce double the weight loss of current diet drugs. The drug works on three different appetite regulatory centers of the brain - the neurotransmitters noradrenaline, dopamine, and serotonin.

The phase II study, reported in The Lancet, included 203 obese patients whose average weight was about 220 pounds.

The average weight loss was 28 pounds in the highest dose of tesofensine compared to the placebo group which lost an average of 5 pounds. Sounds great...until you read the squinty print:

  • Patients on the highest dose of the drug also showed significant increases in blood pressure. Dry mouth, insomnia, nausea, diarrhea were also reported side effects.
  • Study participants treated with tesofensine reported more anger, hostility, and confusion than participants in the placebo arm of the study.
  • The study was completely funded by NeuroSearch, the company which holds the drugs patent.
  • The study did not actually put tesofensine against any other diet drug.
  • The study duration was 6 months, whereas the study duration of the studies which looked at the other ant-obesity drugs (Xenical, Acomplia, Meridia) were between 1 to 4 years in duration. Research almost always shows a decline in weight loss after 6 months - regardless of the intervention.
If you're still excited about the prospect of this drug, you have about 4 more years to weight wait.

Now what it I told you that In a fraction of that time you can completely transform your health through mindset changes, healthy eating and exercise? In the process, you stand a very good chance of lowering your blood pressure instead of raising it and bettering your mental health rather than compromising it.

MAN I miss phen fen. Bring it back you bureacrats! If old geezers can contend with heart attacks from VIagra, I'm willing to chance some leaky heart valves.

BEST DRUG EVER.

I've seen similar articles and I'd have to agree with what they say. The body will take food and turn it into either energy or use it to build your body, either as muscle or stored as fat. The best weight loss pills only serve as an appetite suppressant. It's still up to the person to decide to eat right.

In the 0,5mg group where they lost 11,3kg, 9,2kg was body fat. It does not say what the last 2,1 kg was. But my guess is mostly water, since fat also binds water

In the placebo group where they lost 2,2kg they lost 2,3kg body fat.

The only healthy way to lose weight is to work with the natural processes of your body rather then try to change them.

The side effects seem endless, why do some diet pills create diarrhea when the reason they initially lose weight is because they lose water weight rather than fat weight - after the initial water weight loss how is it that people suffer from diarrhea?

Way too many side effects. Why would anyone risk so much if they an just as easily try certain all natural diet pills which have zero side effects.

...and zero weight loss effect. Just a positive dollar effect for the unregulated shysters!!!

Just so you know, drug studies are ALWAYS sponsored by the company that holds the patent. It's not like another company or a university is going to test your drug for you. The testing is required to pass FDA approval, so drugs are always tested by their patent holders.

That doesn't mean the drug is good, it's just misleading to state that in your "squinty print" portion since it's true for all drugs, not just this latest addition to the snake oil collection.

Interesting article. I don't think we will ever seen a super drug for weight loss. I believe in the mind body connection and that our bodies we're designed for maximum health as if it was incoded in our dna. The problem is we have stopped listening to that little voice that tells us when we had to more or the signals or body gives us.

The closest thing to weight loss magic would have to be hypnosis in my opinion as it helps to alter the habits which helped to get you to the situation you don't want to be in today. Check out my link if you want to know more. Still when we deal with drugs we can have side effects and just as the name implies. A drug is being put into our bodies.

I prefer the more natural approach, but into todays society people are always going to search for the fast way.

Interesting Article

I think I would prefer taking an herbal supplement with vitamins and minerals rather than some laboratory chemical concoction.

I agree... i agree... i agree. Its ashame that all these other drugs out there r left on the market & have horrible side effects but u find something 2 help the over weight people & let it have 1 side effect & BANG its dead!Men taking Viagra can have a heart attack but thats the chance they take 2 have a little slap & tickle & thats ok with the drug companies but its not our right as over weight people 2 b able 2 take a drug we know has side effects, like Phen Fen!I loved the Phen Fen & it helped alot of people but someone had a leaky heart valve & runined it 4 all of us.Well as adults know the risks & if we want 2 take it then we shoudl b able 2.They dont shut down the bars & places selling alcohol & continue 2 let people drink & drive & KILL & thats ok!?Whats wrong with this picture!

Good post. The new weight loss drug Alli that contains orlistat (the active ingredient of Xenical) is being heavily promoted in America at the moment as it is due to be stocked on the shelves of the pharmacies in the middle of June.
