Popcorn: Eat at Your Own Risk
If bite into your sandwich and taste a 7-inch KNIFE, you've got a lawsuit, but if you're eating popcorn and clamp down on a CORN kernel. No, no lawsuit for you!
That's exactly what one New York City judge told a man seeking damages after cracking his tooth on movie theater popcorn.
The man, age 46, said at the very least the cinema should have a sign WARNING people of the potential dangers of popcorn.
According to The New York Post, the court was NOT impressed:
"Anyone who has ever made fresh popcorn in a microwave, in a popcorn popper, or on the stove soon learns the bitter truth that the final product is almost always marred by the presence of unpopped, partially popped or burnt kernels." The judge wrote.
At the trial, the manager of the theater explained that even using a SPECIAL slotted-scoop--to eliminate unpopped kernels--is NO guarantee against them.
However, the judge did recommend, instead of shoveling mouthfuls of popcorn into our traps, people should SLOW down and eat it piece by piece.
I feel SAFER already!
FYI, real dangers of popcorn:
- Iateapie.net: Saturated fat in movie popcorn.

we need more judges like that in our world.
ReplyI couldn't agree more. A little bit of common sense and straight talk goes a long way.

ReplyYou want to be careful about your teeth!
ReplyOnly in the US would something like this happen. Certain people just want money for nothing. Kinda pathetic...
ReplyUnpopped kernels are not nearly as bad at a theater as they are out of my microwave.
I do eat popcorn at movies but they are really high calorie to say the least and the last time I went they had some kind of very bad tasting butter substitute that made me feel horribly sick for a day or do.
I will stay away from a comment on stupid lawsuits but just wanted to note how bad the popcorn is for you, especially as you wolf it down while distracted by a movie.
ReplyBravo to the judge!
ReplyGood to know that common sense is not completely dead. Seriously, who DOESN'T get a dud every once in a while in their popcorn? I just don't get why some people choose to sue over some of the stupidest things.
ReplyYou looked at me wrong...I'm going to sue you! I hate that attitude in the U.S.
Not every kernel will pop. That is common sense. And, yes, eat slower if you're concerned. Sheesh.
ReplyIlove popcorn it's the best snack of all time non butter or buttered, I can eat it 24/7
ReplySome people will try anything for "money",... get real dude.
a popcorn "LOVER"!
This guy should have been forced to pay the movie theater's legal expenses. That would stop these idiotic lawsuits.
ReplyI couldn't agree more. What was this guy thinking trying to sue the cinema??
