Crime TV is Making You Fat...
We also LOVE to eat! And now new research claims watching all this death and destruction may actually cause us to consume MORE than we already do.
The idea came after America's darkest day. Following 911, there was actually a SPIKE in consumer shopping. Researchers designed the experiment around the concept of "mortality salience." Knowing you're going to die.
In two separates tests the "mortality" group, who was asked to write about their impending death, purchased more groceries and ate more cookies than the group NOT asked to ponder dying.
"We found that when people think about the fact that they're going to die someday, not now, but someday. They want to consume more of everything." says Naomi Mandel, co-author of the study, told MSNBC, "We find this with snacks and drinks but also all kinds of different foods: frozen foods, meats, vegetables, everything."
The study, which appears in the Journal of Consumer Research, also suggests watching crime shows like Law & Order and Criminal Minds, makes people with low self esteem more susceptible to over-consumption by confronting them with images of death.
I don't think this research should dissuade you from your favorite crime show, but rather, it highlights the connection between mood and health; i.e. the mind-body.
So, if you're sad, depressed, eating too much or overweight. Get some help. It might save your life. Yoga and therapy works for me!

Just another way to get people to consume more...
ReplyThats a good point....if i knew i was going to die at a certain age i would just throw it over my shoulder and say BRING ON THE REAL YUMMY FOOD!!!!!
ReplyI wonder if they've ever done a study of how much people eat after watching Food Network. Sometimes I watch those shows just mesmerized by how delicious everything looks. As far as crime shows go, I don't watch a whole lot of them because most of the forensic techniques used on those shows are so fake...I usually find myself thinking "Yeah, right, I'm sure they'd use a microscope to identify traces of cyanide in a milkshake".
ReplyGood Lord everything makes us fat these days.
ReplyI wonder if this topic is the same as the previous article, "Watching Crime Shows Makes You Eat More?" posted on Jun 25...
