Bizarre Celebrity Diet Ramblings

HOLLYWOODSIGN.jpgCelebrities, they're MORE than willing to give their opinion--whether we ask for it or not--and lately some of them are all wound up about diet.

Pamela Anderson doesn't like Matthew McConaughey's meat, Ted Nugent finds fat people displeasing, Sir Paul McCartney is perturbed by Gordon Ramsay's anti-vegetarianism and someone named Jamie Oliver thinks people in the UK eat "poor" cuisine.

Whoa! I'm riveted. Tell me more...

PETA Pam

Waning sex-kitten Pamela Anderson is ticked off about forever-shirtless Matthew McConaughey's new gig as spokesman for the National Cattlemen's Beef Association.

When she found out about it, PETA-nista Pam, lamented to The Daily Star: "He is so cute, how can he do that? I'm going to send him a letter." Like oh my god!

Relax Pam. A guy that plays the bongos in the nude is unlikely to persuade anyone to do anything--aside from registering a noise complaint.

Uncle Teddy

Nowadays the "Motor City Madman" Ted Nugent spends more time shooting guns and eating bloody steak--sorry Pam--than he does making music, but he's become REALLY opinionated.

Here he is talking about obesity with Anthony Bourdain, host of No Reservations. Get a load of this: "Obesity is a manifestation of a cultural deprivation in its most vulgar and displeasing-to-look-at form. And it's suicide as a lifestyle," said Nugent, "Obesity is the most vile, vulgar abuse of the personal responsibility of caring about your health.

Well, I'd say something snarky, but Ted owns guns--A LOT of guns--so instead, check out the full transcript over at CalorieLab.

Yell's Kitchen

Psycho chef Gordon Ramsay HATES vegetarians--sorry again Pam--or at least that's what you'd ascertain after hearing him say this: "My biggest nightmare would be if the kids ever came up to me and said 'Dad, I'm a vegetarian'. Then I would sit them on the fence and electrocute them."

Now that's a crazy person! Ramsay's outburst upset legendary rocker and uber veg-head Paul Paul McCartney. He had this reaction: "I'd be happier if everyone was vegetarian. The planet would be better off for it - I think it's a case of live and let live."

Is hard to argue with a Beatle--after all, they invented music. Don't eat the eggs man. Don't eat the eggs man. Don't eat the walrus. Coo-coo, kachoo!

Oliver's Twist

I had to ask around, but apparently Jamie Oliver is some sort of celebrity chef--great another mouthy culinary nitwit. Anyway, Mr. Oliver feels that the British care more about drinking than eating well. Hey, sounds like every college kid I know!

In a report for BBC News, Oliver said, "England is one of the richest countries in the world. The people I'm talking about have enormous televisions - a lot bigger than my own - the latest in mobile phones, cars and they go and get drunk in pubs at the weekend. Their poverty shows in the way they feed themselves."

Okay, he may be right, but I think someone who makes food for a living should be less critical of people who EAT food.

Oh famous people, they're so silly.

I actually disagree about Jamie Oliver. He's a chef who emphasizes on using natural and wholesome foods in his cooking. The reason he's upset with UK's diet is because everyone is eating processed junk in most of their meals.

In fact, Jamie has even taken the initiative to improve the diet of UK children by researching and attempting to revamp the food in school cafeteria. Basically, he's introducing more wholesome natural cooking and doing away with frozen processed garbage, sweets and sodas. I think he's doing a commendable job.

I do too, I think what he has tried to do with school caf's is absolutely astounding. He also tries to push the barrow for socially responsible food ie free range, locally sourced, and fresh - which i find refreshing in a celebrity chef.

What's wrong with freezing food?

What's wrong with a traditional soda pop made with cane sugar (HFCS free)?

Nothing.

Yes, his work with the public schools is really commendable. He's actually trying to make a difference in kids' daily lives.

So what? Diet Blog is more than willing to give its opinion about diets every single day, and usually Diet Blog is dead wrong.

Diet Blog gives bad advice about what to eat, how much to eat, how to exercise, what kind of exercise to do, and on and on.

At least once daily, factually incorrect information is passed along by Diet Blog.

Today, we have the insane suggestion that a one-thousand calorie hamburger somehow plays a role in Australia's obesity problem. Talk about leaps in logic and failing to supply even a shred of evidence to support the outlandish claims being made.

Hey Barry-

Two questions...

1. Why do you read Diet-Blog if we are SO wrong?

2. And how is relaying information the same as giving suggestions? Do you actually READ the posts?

Peace.

And just to add to Barry's contention - do you really think it's that far-fetched that slamming 1000 calorie burgers is at least part of the obesity problem?

Reply
Barry on 09/08/08

The "obesity problem" is the result of consuming excess calories. Period.

Do you think Michael Phelps would get fat eating three of those burgers per day? No.

People can move more, or eat less. Hamburgers, buckets of lard, bags of sugar, gallons of fruit juice, boxes of crackers.. it doesn't matter what the source is.

For some reason people are brainwashed into thinking that red meat, saturated fat, etc., is bad for you. A poor photo of a nasty looking burger helps to push the myth.

So, in conclusion, no, hamburgers are no more at fault than any other food people eat to excess, and likewise are no more guilty than the inactivity that people regularly engage in.

"For some reason people are brainwashed into thinking that red meat, saturated fat, etc., is bad for you."

well... yeah! You need to consume healthy foods, not just unhealthy ones in moderation. A diet of saturated fat is bound to give you high cholesterol no matter how much you exercise or how in shape you appear to be, just ask my boyfriend.

Just a quick point Barry - you're absolutely right, the "obesity problem" is the result of consuming excess calories (period), but it is far easier to eat 1000 excess calories of burger than it is to eat 1000 excess calories of many other foods. Hence the fact that diet blog is targeting those kinds of food.

Celebrities do more to harm then help when it comes to matters of health. Like models, female celebrities are obsessed with slenderness and teach young girls that they simply aren't enough unless they are thinner and more beautiful. With many possessing empty souls they don't further the notion that it's the content of their character that matters.

Celebrities and their fad diets are not the answer, changing behavior coupled with healthy nutritional habits is what this world needs.

Celebrities are always the ones to talk about health, when I imagine if the public knew about many of their private "unhealthy" habits, they would have a lot less people taking them seriously.

Lots of celebrities lie, especially if it makes themselves look good. Not that Pam and Ted and Gordon and Jamie are lying or saying what they're saying simply for publicity, but a lot of celebs do. I'm fairly sure most celebs that say they're vegetarian so the press will leave them alone about why they only eat green salads and lemon water all the time. I know that Pam Anderson is a vegetarian because she's really into animal rights and that's fine, but what other people do is totally up to them.

I also agree with the others about Jamie Oliver...he's genuinely concerned about the future of the British diet. Especially in public schools. I wish people in the US would have as much initiative as he has in getting our public school foodservice program back on track.

You are wrong about Jaime Oliver. That guy actually forages in the wild for some of his natural and organic ingredients and uses them in his cooking shows. He has actually lived in various countries across the world to study food and the art of cooking.

Interesting comments, all of them. However, who pays attention to someone who gets his thrills murdering animals? I do not eat meat and don't condemn those that do. However, there would not be world hunger if all were vegetarians.
Vegetarianism is an enlightened state of mind that only those who practice it can understand. And to argue the point just reinforces the point. Yes, i do eat fish and foul occassionally, but vegetarianism (i.e., not eat anything with a heartbeat!) is my goal.

You don't condemn those that eat meat yet you call them murderers, and refer to vegetarianism is a enlightened state of mind; just to let you know that is condemnation.

Condemn:
1. To express strong disapproval of: condemned the needless waste of food.
2. To pronounce judgment against; sentence: condemned the felons to prison.
3. To judge or declare to be unfit for use or consumption, usually by official order: condemn an old building.
4. To lend credence to or provide evidence for an adverse judgment against: were condemned by their actions.
5. Law. To appropriate (property) for public use.

Ted Nugent kills for sport - that is murder - not because he eats meat. And yes, I know the definition of condemned, I don't need a dictionary.
Your comprehension of what I wrote was misconstrued (might need to look that one up...) to defend your right to eat meat, which is unecessary.

You reinforced my "enlightend" point brilliantly. Thank you.

cereal on 09/10/08

Obviously you don't know what condemn means so please reread the post; both the post were I gave you the definition and your posts. I suppose were you see yourself is enlightened I see sanctimoniousness.

Where did you see me defending my "unnecessary need to eat meat."

I actually have know problem with anyone's dietary choices but obviously you do.

If your goal is to stop eating anything with a heartbeat, it's time to stop eating chicken and fish. There's no "try" about it. You stop buying it, you stop cooking it, and you stop eating it. When my husband and I stopped eating meat, we gave the meat in our freezer away and never bought any more. At restaurants, we ordered vegetarian dishes. At dinner parties, we brought a dish or ate sides and salad. I'm genuinely curious as to why it would be hard for you to stop if that's what you want to do. You just stop, end of story.

Gordon Ramsay is a loser for saying that he would electrocute his kid for becoming a vegetarian. Say what you will, but we don't need meat to survive and be healthy. My healthy long-living ancestors have proven that. And killing a cow is just as cruel as killing a dog or a cat. Humans are the only animals that can have compassion. If you don't eat meat, you reduce needless suffering.

I wrote a couple of blogposts about anti-vegetariansim.

The reason vegetarianism would solve world hunger and reduce global warming is because it takes a lot more grain and energy to produce one pound of meat than it does to nourish people with the equivalent amount of grain.

By the way, have you ever noticed how few obese vegetarians you see and how young they tend to look for their age? Just go to some vegetarian dating websites and you'll see what I mean.
