7 Secrets of Weight Loss Success

There are hundreds of diets, tips, books, and techniques out there for losing weight. Despite this, those who sustain long-term weight loss are few and far between.

In this post, Ranae shares some pearls of wisdom that have helped her achieve her own weight loss, and in turn, have helped others.

  1. "Diets" simply do not work; the very nature of the word implies the "beginning" and an "end" to a way of eating that has, historically, been unhealthy.
  2. A lifestyle change is needed to successfully lose weight and keep it off.
  3. Changing your lifestyle is fun, exciting, rewarding and an exploration into new and heightened flavors, an adventure to new lands through various cuisines that allow for choices that are healthier and more nutritionally sound. It's all in how you adjust your mind to a positive approach!
  4. The way I begin to counsel someone is to ask them to create a list of the foods they would normally eat if calories were of no concern. This provides a starting point and allows me to see where their tastes lie. None of us are the same and we must study this and make choices together to be successful.
  5. Next, we examine those choices and let them guide us in making comparable flavor choices while instituting better preparation choices and learning how to substitute and alter some of the key ingredients that can easily be exchanged for healthier components.
  6. Following success in changing our thought process about food and evaluating our willingness to look inward to the root of our behaviors, we can move forward in developing and instituting a plan to begin the most rewarding journey of a lifetime.
  7. Intuitive eating is introduced to assist in making the total transition and is a crucial component for a successful long-term lifestyle change.

The Mike Huckabee Diet is another weight loss success. Mike Huckabee is a politician who practices healthy living and has managed to lose no less than 105 pounds in a year. While Arkansas' Governor, Huckabee also worked to stop his state`s obesity problem.

Nice advice.

I agree that diets don't work and it bothers me to see so many B.S. "diet" books whenever I do into a bookstore!

If you eat right and exercise, the weight simply comes off and stays off! It's that simple.

I definitely agree with your first point. When people "go on a diet" they tend to think of it as something that has a definite ending. This leads to people changing their eating habits for a period of time, but ending once they've reached a goal. This prevents them from maintaining their weight-loss on the long term.

I've been overweight all of my life. These past few years, as I've journeyed through my 40s, I've managed to put on an extra 100 pounds over the overweight I already was. I really had a hard time letting go of the binging I was so "addicted" to.

About a month ago I found out I have diabetes type 2. That gave me the impetus I needed to start living a healthier lifestyle. Actually those two words together, "healthy lifestyle," used to make me nervous. But over this past month, I've felt compelled to eat much, much healthier (and guess what? food does taste better now!) I've started walking a mile a day (and that's getting easier due to already losing 18 pounds).

I really like the term you used, "intuitive eating." Because even though I've got my diabetic food allowances book, I'm able to "intuitively" adjust the more structured ADA diet to actually become a food lifestyle I can live with and really enjoy.

Thank you for this great article! Needing all the help I can get. :o)

I have type 2 diabetes as well. Definitely stick with the healthy eating and you will find that the good food will continue to taste even better. If there are things you wouldn't eat in the past (for me it was cauliflower/celery/starfruit/onions/squash), try them again and you may find that your tastes have changed.

I found that the longer I go without making bad food choices, the better I feel. If I make a poor choice, I physically feel yucky afterwards. It's a huge reminder of why I shouldn't stray from the healthy habits in the first place!!

Losing wieght and not gaining back ( which to me is much more harder) is more of a psychologial challenge than a physical one. And knowing that it is so helps you find the right point of attack. This is a great article pointing how we should focus on the root cause of the issue (the lifestyle) rather than fighting with the sympthoms such (pounds lost a week, cravings, etc.)
If more elaborated on this article, a book may come out as 'seven habits highly effective dieters' :)

Yes diets don't work! Quick fixes aren't possible. It's a new life. And you're right, it is exciting and empowering.

Great post!

I agree, it is important to think positively about changing your lifestyle to a healthier one. Building healthier eating habits takes time and commitment and should not be an all or nothing approach. Just remember it took you time to put the weight on and it will take you time to take it off. Nice article. I enjoyed reading it.

In my opinion it is far too simple to say yes to lifestyle changes and no to dieting. Changing the way you eat is very difficult – keeping a diet for a while can be just the way to get started on a healthier lifestyle for many people.

Let’s say that you follow a healthy diet for a month and lose some weight. You go back in your comfort zone to your normal way of eating and put all the weight on again. Counted in pounds and kilos the diet seems a failure – but counted in learning, a diet can be a very educational activity.

Eating healthier with more vegetables and less cakes and snacks is not a decision that is easy to make for life – but dieting for a month or even a week or just a day may get a healthy lifestyle started.

Any list for weight loss that doesn't include weight lifting as part of the weight loss prescription is a crappy list.

This list is more like 7 Secrets of diet adherence.

Finally, who cares about losing "weight"? I want to lose FAT. Anyone can eat a sh---y low calorie diet and lose "weight".

Believe it or not, some people use one as a stepping stone into another. So if you have a lot of weight to lose, it might be helpful to start getting your eating habits in order, lose a bit of weight, and be more energized before jumping into an exercise program.

Mike Huckabee had a lifestyle change. It wasn't a "diet". I really like him. He's got a good handle on the nutrition problems of our country.

I agree with all those points, but I especially like #5. I used to adore butter and cheese on absolutely everything. Once I realized how many calories that was adding, I decided I could go without cheese on my sandwiches...I found that a little mustard really perked it up a lot. Or if I wanted pasta, I found that pasta with say, a basic marinara sauce usually fulfilled my cravings and didn't have nearly the calories as say, fettucine alfredo.

This is a good list, I particularly agree with the point made about beginnings and ends. If you want to lose weight properly and keep it off for the rest of your life, you need to change your diet for the rest of your life.

I don't like the idea of following a diet either, because it has a beginning and an end, and there is the potential of going back to your old ways when the diet is over. I agree it is important to adopt a healthy way of eating, but something has to be said for the goals of your eating.

If you are overweight, obese, moridly obese, etc., you must eat less food to lose weight than if you were at your ideal weight. It's hard to avoid a "diet" when that is the goal. I don't think eating intuitively alone will help you achieve the results you desire. I think it is essential to track calories and stay within limits.

The focus should then be to develop good eating habits while dieting, learn more about the food you eat, and be ready to transition out of weight-loss mode when you reach your goal by carefully adding more calories.

I am following a plan now that most would consider a "diet". I am told what to eat, when to eat, and how much to eat. However, I think the overall plan is teaching me some good lessons. When I reach my goal, I will be just as diligent about the food choices I make, both in quantity and quality.

According to the American Heritage Dictionary the word DIET meand "The usual food and drink of a person or animal."

Some times I get tired of the phrase "Diets don't work". Do Fad diets work, like the grapefruit diet, or the 3 day diet, or the good ol cabbage soup diet - NO.

But there are a lot of good Diets / Weight Loss plans out there, such as Weight Watchers, many of the eDiets plans etc. And I've personally always thought that the Diabetic exchange diet is one of the best, because of the freedom of choice.

The problem is with the mindset of the dieter. If they think they can eat a certain way to lose weight then go back to their old eating habits, they are kidding themselves. On the other hand of they diet - and go into it with the mindset that this will be their diet for life, they will succeed.

Just my two cents worth.

Although I do agree that it's good to not look at this as a diet and more of a change in lifestyle I think we still need to set short term goals that have a 'beginning' and an 'end'. For example, lets say from January to May you want to go from 185lb to 165lb - that's setting a short term goal with a beginning and an end.

I do understand the point you are trying to make - that we need to make a major lifestyle change or else we will just fall off this 'lifestyle' because we view it as a short-term 'diet'. We do however need to include some short-term beginning and ends with the lifestyle change.

These are all great points and I liked #4 especially. It's really interesting because I think that you can always find healthy replacements for even some of the most unhealthy foods. Depending on your taste buds you can satisfy sweet or salty cravings in a healthy way. I think that it's good to let people know that there is no secret to weight-loss you have to incorporate healthy eating and exercise always. This should be a way of life and not a fad.

I think that diets work, but I think the reason that people think that diets don't work is their understanding of what the word means.

Diet means way of life or regimen, not restriction.

Saying diets don't work is like saying that your way of life doesn't effect your health.

Ok so nobody thinks Gillian knows what she's talking about but she does get results, I came to your website and what did I see, 7 rules that I've read a million times. I need someone to tell me exactly what to do and what to eat and when to eat it until I get in the habit of doing it. And what else do I find on your website? More and more pills to take and more and more diets to try.How many diets are on the market I have read at least 25 out of thousands, I pick Gillian because she in my face telling me to get moving, those books work for people who can dicipline themselves. I say do what works for you, good luck and God Bless...
