Healthy Cookbook: Eat, Shrink & Be Merry
Are you crazy about puns and low calorie cooking?
If so, you will like Eat, Shrink & Be Merry - a healthy cookbook from Janet & Greta Podleski.
These two Canadian sisters combined their talents of writing and love for cooking in order to write their first surprise bestseller called Looneyspoons in 1996. Their blending of humor with great tasting low calorie recipes won them great acclaim with an offer to sell their book on QVC. They wrote Crazy Plates a few years later and began selling their beloved recipes as frozen meal kits to Canadian markets.
Eat, Shrink, and Be Merry has continued the tradition of making cooking fun, educational as well as nutritious. They divide the book into 12 sections ranging from "Hey, Hey... We're The Munchies" (appetizers) to "Don't Have a Cow, Man!" (vegetarian) to "A Sweet Carb Named Desire" (desserts).
Besides the great looking recipes like "Yummus" and "Skewer Always on my Mind!", the book includes other reading material with headings such as "Funny Factoids" and "Return To Slender". These sections contain health tips, cooking tips, exercise tips, and just good old fashioned funny stuff.
The book is extremely user friendly with nutritional information at the bottom of each recipe and a metric conversion chart in the back of the book for the rest of the world to enjoy making their recipes as well.
They also have one high carb cheat in the section You're Gonna Die Anyway called" Died-and-Gone-to-Heaven Chocolate Layer Cake". Who could resist that?
Overall, the cookbook is a useful addition to our cookbook library.

How do they define "nutritious", and "healthy"? Amazingly, lots of people still believe that eating a diet low in fat is good for you.
ReplyAmazingly, some people still believe that Atkins has definitely proven right.

I agree with the above post, that "healthy eating" is a pretty vague term and can mean so many things. I do like though how they break apart the different types of meals and include cheat meals in there as well.
ReplyNow that I've embraced healthy eating... healthy cooking should be the next step!
ReplySounds like a great book. Got to buy it and see what amazing recipes I can find!
ReplyJanet and Greta are doing a great thing by promoting healthier eating to the everyday person through their book and food network show.

ReplySounds like an interesting cookbook. I am a big believer in cooking and eating healthy meals. When you eat healthier not only will you look better, but you will also feel better. Hopefully, their recipes are low in salt and saturated fats. These are also important aspects to consider in healthy meals.
ReplyThat sound amusing...lol
ReplyBut Great Review!
I think all those puns would get to me by about the 4th page. I usually get most of my recipes from various sources, depending on which version I like the best. I try to pick healthy versions of classic recipes that don't call for lots of fake ingredients.
