A Man of Courage and Inspiration: Randy Pausch 1960-2008

You may or may not have heard of Randy Pausch. He is not a traditional celebrity or guru, just a man with an encouraging and inspiring message.
A Computer Science professor at Carnegie Mellon University, Pausch was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer in 2006 and in August of 2007 was told he had anywhere from 3 to 6 of good health remaining.
If you haven't already seen this video, do yourself a favor and watch it. It's almost guaranteed to give you a new perspective.
The following is a reprisal of his "Last Lecture" talk from the Oprah Winfrey show.
So many emotions and thoughts were triggered for me upon seeing this, such as;
- I really don't have much to complain about - even though I do more than I should
- My time on this earth is short - it's time I focused more on enjoying and savored them
- Enjoy the time with my family
- How can I be a better person, how can I impact people more positively
- I have no excuse not to do something that needs to be/should be done
From a health perspective, it really did make me reflect on how precious it is and how easily it can be taken for granted.
What sort of emotions does this invoke for you?
Good for you for putting this special man's special message on your site!
ReplyRandy was a great researcher and teacher. I'm so glad to see his final lecture get the exposure it deserves. Thanks...

ReplyI have heard great things about his book as well. I loved the video. Very emotional and yet very inspiring. It made me take a step back and appreciate what I have rather than complain about what I don't.
ReplyEveryone can learn something from Randy. He left a legacy that not too many people have the ability to do. If only we all had the love and courage that he did.
ReplyWow, that was a very powerful message to all of us. I got teary-eyed after his lecture, and I admit that I am quite a complaint queen. Nothing seems to ever be enough for me, but I think I'm going to re-evaluate myself and strive to be a better person. I might not be successful for a long time... but at least for the next couple of weeks, I will continue to be inspired by this. Thanks for posting this!
I wonder how my last lecture would be...
ReplyIt reminded me of the importance of family and how precious they are. Enjoy being with them and talking to them while they are here.
ReplyI also was encouraged to HAVE FUN and enjoy this life God has given me.
Thank you for sharing. Though it is not very relevant to your blog subject!
ReplyMr. Pausch was such an inspiration to so many with his upbeat attitude in the face of advercity. it's sad to think that we haven't thought about the way we live our lives until such a man has passed away and so passed on a powerful message: that life is over in the blink of an eye, just as sudden as it begins, it ends just the same. however, Mr. Pausch touched so many lives and with his "last lecture" will hopefully do so for eternity.
