Vote: Will You Try Dunkin' Donuts New Menu?
Dunkin' Donuts recently announced a new menu containing "better-for you" food and drink. They've called it DDSMART. Food must meet the following criteria:
25% fewer calories; 25% less sugar, fat, saturated fat or sodium than comparable fare, and/or contain ingredients that are nutritionally beneficial.
Is that enough to make you want to eat there?
The menu contains foods like "Egg White Sandwiches", Berry Smoothies, and unsweetened iced tea.
The thing is - it's a donut outlet...?

Will You Try Dunkin' Donuts New Menu?

I'm not opposed to this idea, but I feel like many of these companies are trying to exploit people's health concerns. However, if their menu items are truly more healthy, then I think it's great for us as consumers.
ReplyI doubt that the new food is actually healthy. It would take a mirrical.
ReplyApparently consumers' health concerns are affecting their bottom line. I wonder if they want people with healthy diets to come and get donuts or their regulars to eat healthier, live longer and get more donuts :). Or possibly both...
ReplyHalf of these items are not new. They already have iced tea, reduced-fat blueberry muffins, multigrain bagels... it's just a new marketing spin. That being said, Dunkin Donuts is a major part of my day already between the iced tea and their flatbread sandwiches, so I can't really go there any more than I already do!
ReplyEat ONE donut once in a while. If your diet prohibits you from ever having a food you really like, then it probably isn't sustainable.
Replymy dd has sweetened iced tea but not unsweetened so i would buy that but even with less fat and sugar i bet the berry smoothies are horribly unhealthy. i recently watched a report about smoothies comparing the posted calories and fat to the actual measurements in an independent lab. most went over including dd but gnc had one that was 800 more than it was supposed to have. i will never have another smoothie unless i make it myself!
ReplyI can appreciate that places like dunkin donuts are trying to have "healthier" options but i think it is still mostly hype. people see that it isn't as bad for them so they automatically think it's "healthy." I don't have any interest in dunkin donuts new "smart" menu.
ReplyA 400 calorie smoothie is "reduced calorie"?? Shame on these people. People who buy into this sort of thing, people who are new to dieting most likely, will not look at the nutritional info, and they'll feel like they can eat anywhere because of all these new "healthy choices" that are popping up everywhere. The problem is that these people will continue to fail and be discouraged without understanding why. They made "healthy choices", after all...
ReplyWhile I think this is a good idea (a first step, maybe, for someone who already goes to Dunkin' Donuts often), it's really just hype. As soon as the masses start to become less concerned with their health, this will vanish.
And I don't think I've ever set foot in a Dunkin' Donuts and definitely not in the past five years. Combine that with a mild paranoia about anyone else preparing my food and it's pretty apparent I will not be sampling any of this.
ReplyIf I want something healthy, I don't go to dunkin donuts. That is like going to the strip club for chicken wings. ( I have never been to a strip club by the way)
ReplyI have to agree that this is an advertising hype to take advantage of the current health trend. That is what business owners have to do. They have to listen to what the public wants and try to provide it. Why try to sell something no one wants? That would be throwing away money.
ReplyThat said, I would be leary about their new menu. As with labeling in the supermarket, ads can be misleading. 25% less is significant, but not significant enough to be a standard item in someone trying to lose weight or even a diabetic.
Great post!
I've heard that they had really good coffee, but there isn't one nearby, and I've never stopped when I was out of town because I didn't want donuts. An egg-white sandwich would be enough incentive for me to try it.
ReplyThank god we have better food to eat in India where portions sizes are what they should be and not supersized. And most food is home cooked from fresh ingredients bought the previous day.
Whenever most Indian who travel to US come back and compare notes, one aspect of the topic inevitably goes towards the food and its portion size and fat content.
I myself put on a few kgs every time I get there and have to undergo a lot of trouble getting it off again.
This is inspite of trying to eat sensibly all the time. But often there are no other choices.

Replyat least now when i go to dunkin donuts i wont have the only choice of donuts, i can have something like an eggwhite sandwich if i want :)
ReplyQuestion: How much 'lite'er can a latte possibly be? Espresso and some steamed milk...make it skim, and you're all set!
As for whether I'll buy any of the "new" menu items, the only thing I get at DD is coffee.
ReplyOne test found DD coffee with a high percentage of "quaker" beans, which impart a sour flavor. (http://www.coffeeforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=6323)
ReplyEgg whites = STUPID
ReplyWho cares about the calories and the fat content!
When has Dunkin Donuts ever been known for providing quality nutrition. Please don't kill yourself by eating these "bastardized" foods. I can only imagine what kind of food additives have been put these non-foods to make them taste somewhat palatable!
ReplyYou know what? I love DD coffee and I go there just for that so I have no problem with the donuts. I like them but I stay away (once in a blue moon I'll have a whole wheat donut). Anyway, thank you DD and I will have that Lite Latte!
ReplyEgg white sandwich? I hate stuff like this...there is nothing wrong with the whole egg. You're throwing away nutrients when you toss out the yolks. As for the cholesterol in them, eating cholesterol is not what causes yours to go up.
ReplyAmen to that. How weird is it to go to a donut shop and order and egg white sandwich...?
ReplyThe only reason they're doing this is so people feel really virtuous about eating something "healthy" like a smoothie and then feel entitled to have a "treat"...like, oh say, a donut or two. They didn't graduate with marketing degrees yesterday, ya know.
ReplyI have a DD within a 5 minute walk of my office. My co-workers always want to go there for breakfast meetings. I always feel so silly ordering a whole wheat bagel with lowfat cream cheese on the side, and "scooping" all the dough out of the bagel while my co-workers gorge on croissant sandwiches and cream-filled donuts. I would totally eat an egg white sandwich with turkey sausage for breakfast - the nutritionals are really not awful for a fast food meal (other than the high sodium content, but I don't worry about that).
ReplyI don't eat there. I just order a hot coffee with Splenda and low fat milk and pray they don't contaminate it with gluten.
ReplyI'd still go to DD, but I'd still order how I do now. The iced latte lite and the iced coffee, both made with three splendas; are pretty good.
ReplyIf I know I'm gonna be able to work it off by doing my freight shift, or if I know I'll be eating not so much that day, a canadian bacon and egg sandwich on a wheat bagel is fine.
I don't think that subbing out white only eggs is going to do anything. Most of the time, breakfast sandwiches like that use Beaters anyway.
