Randy Jackson: It's a Diet Book, Dawg!

You know the weight-loss industry has gone berserk when a guy like Randy Jackson, of American Idol fame, can publish a DIET book! No, I'm not kidding.

Jackon, who had gastric bypass surgery in 2003, was a spokesperson for Oreo cookies, and recently admitted he has Type-2 diabetes, is self-publishing his book, The No-Nonsense Guide to Getting Fit, Eating Better, and Living Longer.

In an article in OK! Magazine, Randy Jackson says he's tried every diet under the sun and he swears that his new approach holds the key to the "new you". Wow! Randy had the key all along--who knew?

Listen. As a dude who lost a lot of weight the old-fashioned way--through diet and exercise--I say don't take weight-loss advice from anyone who refers to himself as "The Dawg."

Personally, I don't take weight loss advice from someone who is still overweight :)

I don't even take advice from people who are already underweight ;)

Nothing agaisnt people who get weight loss surgery - but isn't getting it admitting that you can't lose weight in a "no-nonsense" kind of way?

Still, I think we're asking a lot of the typical type of people I imagine watch American Idol (or at least are still watching it) to realise this.

Sometimes surgury is a life requirement...
Maintianing the after affect of gastric bypass surgury can be just as challenging as losing the weight to start with.

It's possible that maybe he's learned at least something about nutrition after having gastric bypass, but yeah, he's still overweight and he obviously needed some help getting trimmed down. The book's probably more of a Randy Jackson autobiography, kind of like Carnie Wilson's book, rather than a weight-loss guide. Because let's face it; most people who are getting gastric bypass surgery are going to need a little more in-depth research and help than can be found in a book by Randy Jackson.

Sorry, but who is Randy Jackson?

I'm sorry, someone who failed at life and had to get a gastric bypass and is **still fat** should never ever write anything about dieting and nutrition.

I wouldnt say he failed at life. He did fail at being healthy and in shape. But not life. The guy has tons of money so I don't understand why he needs to even do this book thing, especially since he is obviously not qualified to be doing it in the first place.

Crazy...

Failed at life? He has a happy marriage, healthy children and millions of dollars in the bank. That's my definition of succeeding in life.

Yet, he's still not physically fit :P

What's life without fitness?

Wow, that's harsh.

Sure, he is trying to make money from people desperate enough to spend their hard earned money on another B.S. diet book written by another celebrity (B-list? C-list? D-List???) who knows no more about losing body-fat than Michael Jackson knows about plastic surgery, but seriously,; failed at life???

He worked with Whitney, dammit!!!

Reading this made me think about a joke that Bill Maher made about folks who've had the gastric-by pass surgery. He said that congratulating them for losing weight is like congratulating a person from stop using coke by stitching up his nose ...

Hey didn't Al Roker come out with a cookbook? LOL!

Let's see...The book is about getting fit, eating better & living longer. Is the author fit and eating better - maybe but living longer? Hopefully you can live longer if you are fit and eating well. But he is clearly overweight. I'm sorry.

Wow. Judgmental much people? Last time I checked, you could still be overweight and healthy. Extra fat on the body isn't a death knell. Oddly, being overweight or obese seems to give people a survival edge when facing critical illness...

Does he expect anyone to believe that he has found the secret? Especially when the dude is still fat?

I'm sure some people will buy it because we seem to be addicted to diet books and any psuedo-celebrity can hawk their name for a diet...just look at the NutriSystem ads and some supplement ads. You have gorgeous people with perfect bodies who become "overweight" while pregnant, then snap a "before" picture right after they deliver the baby and a couple months later get their bodies back and say it's all because of Product "X".

Whoa, sorry for the rant, but crap like this gets me going.

When I think of what's involved in diet after bariatric surgery--which is, after all, mutilating surgery, I don't think I want weight loss advice from that person.

After reading this blog for a couple years, I'm still surprised at how many commenters are misinformed about gastric bypass.

Jackson clearly failed at gastric bypass and for that reason shouldn't be writing a book. But one can learn a ton about fitness and nutrition, which is required to maintain weight loss after your stomach stretches and your intestines relearn how to absorb calories. I remember Maher's remark vis-a-vis cocaine, which is very funny, but he's wrong. It's more like congratulating a person who stopped using coke by stitching up a nostril. It's only helps, it's not a solution.

Having struggled with my weight for years, I find I am ultra-critical of others who are fat (or fatter). If I think they somehow cheated by getting surgery while I had to bust my butt the real way - then I am first to condemn. Most fat people busted their butts at some point but if they are still fat, does that mean they failed at life? It's an addiction that hasn't been acknowledged and treated. Surgery is one option for people who have given up and feel hopeless -- if they want to live some kind of life.

I venture to guess that someone came to Randy Jackson, thinking he was the font of all weight loss knowledge and asked him to write a book based on his "learnings." Hopefully he'll make enough money to buy foods from Jenny Craig with the royalties.

Randy was heavier before he began his weight loss journey... and any success at keeping some of the extra weight should be aplauded. I was once 300 lbs at 5'2. I'm now at 160... but I haven't been able to lose and keep weight off below that. So I am still overweight... but I think losing 140 lbs and keeping it off for 5 years (without surgery) is pretty successful, even if I'm not at my "ideal" body weight. My fat percentage is at 18% and I'm very active. I have completed 3 marathons in the past 2 years and am training for my first triathalon and I'm fairly happy so if i don't lose any more weight, I don't think I failed either.

WTF?! First of all, he "lost" weight with a gastric bypass...PLUS he is still really overweight. I don't get it. Only an idiot would buy that book.
