Human-Powered Floating Gym

How many have ever wondered at all the wasted energy in a gym? People pounding away on treadmills and stationery bikes.

"All of this energy is summarily dissipated and ultimately exhausted for the sake of a single individual's wellbeing" says Mitchell Joachim - eco-designer. Joachim has the answer: A Human-Powered River Gymnasium.

By continuing to provide vital health amenities, the River Gym can leave the realm of the glass box and become a useful multi-planar kinetic space. Envision your gym becoming a machine of human propulsion that helps purify water, provide spectacular views, and transport less-motivated citizens. Why should gym members be forced to stare restlessly at a mirror, television, or static streetscape when their entire body is active?

A fantastic idea - the true definition of functional fitness.

My husband, an engineer, is always trying to find ways to make my workouts "useful" in some way. He rebuilt an old stationary bike and hooked the pedal mechanism up to an old alternator that he hooked up to a car battery pack. Then we plugged the TV into it and you had to pedal the bike to make the TV work. It was kinda weird...the more watts the appliance used, the tougher it was to pedal the bike. I managed to keep the TV powered for quite a while, but my husband lasted exactly 3 minutes before he decided that it would be easier for him to power a radio, lol. I'd totally join a gym like this...how cool would that be?

That would be super cool, until those of us who aren't in the best shape realize we probably weren't going to get all the way through the extended edition Lord of the Rings marathon. Something to shoot for, I guess.

This is brillient, innovative design. Now all we need is someone to pay for it.

To be fair, I am not sure it even qualifies as a "design." It looks more like some cool pictures.

I think it's a great idea to utilize the energy exerted during exercise. Not only can it help the individual stay in shape, but it can help as somewhat of an alternative energy source. Obviously we can't be dependent on exercise as energy, but it is good idea to make it useful.

How much energy do we expell when we run on a treadmill? We cannot make the treadmill roll just by ourselves - we need some energy to make the treadmill belt go around.

cool idea for the wasted energy. i read somewhere about how buildings could use the energy produced from revolving doors.

Now THIS is one awesome idea! Just too bad those floating gyms will have some people getting sea sick all over the place haha. Cool post ;-)

This is the second time I've heard of an idea like this. Technically, members of these gyms should be getting paid for the energy they create :)

Goodbye membership fees, and goodbye health club competition.

Inspiring ,as a collective Idea in the process, we could convert this into the already existing infastructure? The energy companies can join up with the gyms and people can get discounts on their energy bills!
