Mobile Veggies: Coming Soon to Your Neighborhood?
Health experts often blame poor neighborhood's inaccessibility to healthy food--like fruits and vegetables--for their community's declining health. In May, The New York Times reported that supermarkets are leaving areas like Queens and Harlem, making it difficult for residents to find fresh food within walking distance of their homes.
That's why the Veggie Mobile is a great idea! The Veggie Mobile is a basically a farmers market on wheels. Serving neighborhoods around Albany, New York, the Veggie Mobile sells wholesale produce to low-income communities and senior living communities.
The truck itself is the store! Here's what the inside of one looks like. From the Veggie Mobile blog:
Now, not only is giving people access to fresh fruits and vegetables a wonderful public service, but apparently the Veggie Mobile has fantastic prices too! Via the Associated Press:
When compared to New York Supermarket--a small grocery in the poor Arbor Hill neighborhood of Albany--the Veggie Mobile offered dramatic savings, more selection and fresher options. Bananas sold for $0.99 a pound at the supermarket, but went for $0.59 a pound from the Veggie Mobile. Iceberg lettuce was $1 each at the mobile grocery, and $1.99 at the New York Supermarket. Cucumbers sold for $0.89 each at the neighborhood market, but were 3 for $1 from the Veggie Mobile.
This is really cool. I'd love for a Veggie Mobile to back into my driveway on those days when I'm too lazy to leave the house.

this is more than a great concept- its something that should be implemented everywhere. its so hard to find good produce for a decent price, especially in big cities. where i live, it 15 miles for you to reach anything and when you do, its often a disappointment unless you are lucky enough to find a roadside stand that offers good produce. this veggie truck thing would really help folks like my mom who find it difficult to drive with her poor vision, not to mention her fixed income.
ReplyGreat idea.
A mobile produce market.
I live in downtown Toronto. Recently, a farmers market has taken up residence on Wednesday afternoons in a nearby parking lot. Sponsored by the local BIA, the market is doing a booming business. It's like people have never seen vegetables before.
I spoke with a few of the vendors yesterday and asked them why they thought the market was so successful.
They told me that their customers loved the idea that their produce was coming from farms just outside of the city instead of being flown/shipped and trucked in from around the world. There was also a big demand for organic meats, breads and produce.
It's a bit of a cliche here in Toronto, but the idea of eating locally (organic if possible) seems to be catching on

ReplyI LOVE this idea, and the produce looks so fresh!
ReplySounds like a great idea - especially the prices! Although I have access to a local farmer's market in my rural area, the prices are sky-high compared to the Veggie Mobile!
ReplyThis is a cool idea. Where we live we have very easy access to a variety of produce sellers. However, if I lived in the city I would probably be disappointed with the lack of reasonably priced produce. The veggie mobile is definitely something I'd take advantage of.
ReplyAwesome idea. A novel attempt at bringing health and spreading it. Now if I only lived back in the Bronx...
ReplyWonderful, now if it only had a theme song to beat out the warbling ragtime of the ice cream truck. Can you imagine your kids begging for money so they can chase down the veggie truck for a fresh kumquat? I can only dream.
ReplyI find it amazing how many great athletes come out of these areas who lived on convenient store food.
ReplyFrom that evidence it seems it would be more beneficial to adults than youngsters.
This is a great idea! Hopefully they keep their prices affordable. Too many times, businesses like this start up with low prices and then ....
ReplySomeone should have thought of this a long time ago. I hope the parents that use the "Fast food is cheaper" excuse will begin to feed their children a little better.
ReplyWhat a great idea! I have a farmer's market in my neighborhood, but a lot of people don't have access to it. This sure beats having ice cream trucks driving around the neighborhood. I'd definitely rather buy a bag of yummy apples vs. a popsicle or ice cream cone.
ReplyWOW! How cool is this? I say bring it up my street! I'll be waiting! I'e been eating the Zone diet for years and a fresh supply of veggies practically right on my doorstep would be fantastic
(Does it show how excited I am by the thought of the Veggie Mobile in my neighborhood? LOL!)
ReplyWhat a good idea, this will really encourage everyone to eat more healthily who otherwise couldn't afford supermarket prices. It's vital for your health to eat at least 5 portions of fruit and veg a day and can drastically reduce the chances of getting cancer and heart disease.
Eating citrus fruits can also help you to lose weight as they need more calories to burn than they contain and therefore raise your metabolism slightly.
ReplyThis really is a brilliant idea! Instead of the ice cream van, the vegetable van could come every day.
Ok, it might not be as popular with the kids, bet definitely a lot better for them.
ReplyThis is an excellent idea. Fresh, quality produce is very important to general health, the more people who have access to them the better. Times are changing, sometimes even for the better.
ReplyWe have something like that in our area! Its slowly getting more and more popular. Everyone gets excited when they see his adorable little veggie truck!
