Steamplicity: A Healthy Vending Machine?

Nowadays we have vending machines for everything; hot chips, pizza - even South Beach diet food.
Steamed food is a new one on me. From Selecta:
The model works on the basis of offering high quality ingredients that are cooked using a steam pressure cooking system. [...] it maximises the taste and nutritional value of the food.
Some of the meals on offer include:
- Salmon with Julienne of Vegetables & Chive Sauce
- Broccoli and Cauliflower Mornay
- Penne Carbonara
- Beef, Onion and Mushroom Casserole
- Mild Vegetable Curry and Rice
- Sausage and Potato Mash with Red Onion Gravy
Who knows how healthy these pre-prepared meals are (maybe high in sodium?) - but it's more exciting than canned bread.

Fish from a vending machine? No thank you...
Replysadly Im 100% certain Id try this at least one.
and probably more often :)
ReplyI'd be nervous about eating this kinda stuff from a vending machine...
I would totally go for it if they had some snacks-- like, steamed vegetables. Freezer section and the steaming section than yay, snacks!
ReplyYou forgot to mention the ipod and dvd vending machines across the US. I wouldnt try fish from this vending machine either.
ReplySame here, a bit leary of eating food from a vending maching. I suppose in a pinch, if really desperate, and then still only a maybe. It would also upon the ingredients in the meal. Water is the only I actually buy from a vending machine now!
ReplyI don't know if I'd try these. I don't like pre-packed foods anyways because they always have so many preservatives in them and taste so salty. Plus, unless they stay frozen in this machine, I would kind of wonder how fresh the foods are.
ReplyVending machine fish? O.o
It's hard to read labels when the food is sitting in the vending machine. If it's something at work, such as a yogurt and I forgot lunch or a healthy snack, I at least have the option of looking up the ingredients online (to check for gluten). If I'm out, I could see it being a bit more risky.
ReplyPre packaged food has hit a new low.
ReplyI certainly wouldn't buy this from a street corner, but a lot of office buildings currently have vending machines with frozen entrees. If it came down to a fifteen minute break and you forgot to pack a lunch, at least this gives you an alternative to a hot pocket.
ReplyIt is about time someone came up with this one! How bad could the food taste? I am sure that out of the 6 choices there is something everyone will enjoy. No matter what, this is a leap in the right direction (a leap away from Twinkies & Fritos).
You could always brown bag it too! I pack a little cooler everyday & that has been working for me for years.

ReplyOkay, so that's quite weird. And rather unappealing, both price and freshness. But even letting aside the questions about freshness...they'd probably overcook the food. (Where I work, at least, we overcook our "steamed" vegetables like mad and some people want them cooked even longer.)
ReplyHmm, I actually read this and thought 'wow, what a great idea! I wish my office had one.' I guess I'm in the minority :)
ReplyI thought it was a good idea. Most people eat junk food (salt + sugar + fat) from vending machines - so wouldn't this be a step in the right direction?
ReplyThere are certian things i would buy from a vending machiene and certain things that i wouldnt. These types of vending machienes are massive in japan. You can buy cooked foods, sushi. Not certain i would feel comfortable buying fish from a vending machiene.
ReplyIt is nice to see a healthy alternative when it comes to vending machines...this is a very unique idea.
ReplyThey have higher standards of cleanliness and sanitation in Japan. Fish from American vending machines? Not for me, thank you...
