Weight Loss Sunglasses

This snazzy creation is designed to give food a blue tinge - theoretically rendering food dull and unpalatable. Kind of the opposite phenomenon of "beer goggles"?
While your first instinct may be to snicker (as it should be), there is actual physiological and psychological rationale to this theory: Certain colours tend to stimulate appetite, while others tend to deter it. Apparently, blue is considered to be the least appetizing color of the spectrum, with red and yellow being at the opposite end as a hunger stimulant. Hmmm....

The color blue is associated with calmness and tranquility. It can also be cold and depressing (ie. the expression "feeling blue"). Combine these traits and you have an environment that will curtail your eating (so the theory goes).
color psychology aside, it isn't likely that sunglasses will have any significant effect on food consumption and weight loss. For one thing, food is multi-sensory. It isn't just the sight - it's the taste, texture and smell of food that all contribute to its attractiveness and lack thereof.
In my opinion, instead of finding ways to make food look less palatable, it is important to learn to enjoy the foods we eat. This is part of creating a positive relationship with food. Find ways to enhance the taste of healthy foods and mindfully consume (and enjoy) the less than healthy choices less often.
I don't know what to say it is April fools right :)
ReplyMark, I'm with you mate!
Isn't it odd that many of the weird and wacky things come from China.
I was wondering what happens to a blind person seeing as they don't depend on what colour the food is (obviously) but on the smell and therefore the taste.
So are you serious?
Reply"Isn't it odd that many of the weird and wacky things come from China"
Nope. Isn't it odd that many things come from China?
ReplyThank you, NAFTA
ReplyWell it makes sense I suppose. There's not a whole lot of naturally blue colored foods. Even fruits classed as blue are usually purple. By the time food gets that blueish tint it tends to be pretty unappetizing.
ReplyI would have assumed these were an April Fools gag if I hadn't just run across them yesterday when researching color meaning! What will they think of next...
ReplyMan, when marketing becomes direct subconscious manipulation, I get a bit hot under the color.
ReplyRose-colored have always been my preferred choice :-)
ReplyI saw this posted on another blog, but I still couldn't help but laugh. Seriously, they may actually work by making your food look blue and less appetizing, but I'm guessing that most people who'd buy these would see blue pizza oozing with cheesy goodness and then rip the damn glasses off and chow down. Interesting concept though.
On another note of weird stuff from China/Japan...I saw a commercial for these foot patches that you stick onto your feet to draw toxins and cellulite and fat out of your body. You've got to be half nuts to pay money for that sort of stuff.
ReplyI saw some post too where Johnny Depp where's the blue glasses for this reason. I sware it really has to be an April Fool's joke.
ReplyHi Mike Howard,

I agree with the principal, mainly that the most powerful stimulus for wanting certain foods is visual. However, I don't know that colored sunglasses would be the most effective negation of this. A better idea would be to stop watching TV. You just might stop craving fast food, pop, candy, and other junk as much. It worked for me. I recently broke my 'no TV rule' and immediately started really craving Subway. After choking it down I vowed never to eat fast food or watch TV again. It is a huge waste of time, the information is completely skewed, the entertainment is mind numbing, and it is a pure source of brainwashing. Once TV is removed, families become more functional, kids behave better, moral conscience starts to return, and you start thinking much more clearly. It forms our society's opinions, and causes us to think we want things that are destructive and unhealthy, both physically and psychologically. There's a reason they call it 'programming': we're the ones being programmed!
Replyis this good to lessen your desire for having good food... i think if you are food freak you will not be able to control your self by using these techniques.
ReplyOn the other side of the coin... I like this in a couple different ways. First, suppose people make the conscious effort to not eat unless wearing their eating glasses? Just that alone would help to dissuade casual snacking as I can't imagine wearing these to be all that pleasant. Next, suppose the person actually believes that he/she will be less hungry as a result... then they will be less hungry. It's no less ridiculous than those ear patch bb shot pellets that people were taping to their ears a few years ago.
Replywhatever, i think its is a good marketing thoughts... women would like to do anything to keep them in a good figure. Actually some one has already do this. check out Sunglasses for weight loss
Replythis seems to be a good way to lessen your appetite especially for those who want to reduce their weight.
ReplyI found a great blog article about certain foods that can make you lose weight. http://weightcontrolinfo.com/2008/05/20/certain-foods-can-make-you-lose-weight-fast/
ReplyI think the idea makes sense. You would less likely to eat dull looking food.
As for those fast food logo's I have to say the McDonalds one makes me the most hungry :)
