The Reason We're Fat: Plaque and Parasites?
"Shocking proof!"... "The Reason You Can't Lose Weight has Nothing to Do With Your Will-Power, Over-Eating or the Right Diet! ... The Reason You are Fat and Unhealthy is Because You Have Disgusting Plaque and Horrible Little 'CRITTERS' Living in Your Guts!"
I came across this advert recently and found it so unbelievably outrageous and cringe-inducing that I had to read on (kind of like watching a car wreck). Here are some more gems from Dr. Suzanne Gudakunst's site (topsecretfatlosssecret.com);
- Harmful Plaque - Everybody has it. But to keep from getting sick and to be able to maintain a healthy body weight you MUST get rid of it now!
- If you don't, it will eventually cause you to not be able to lose weight (regardless of how much you diet and exercise!) and eventually it will kill you!
- Harmful Parasites - Everybody has them. If left to live and breed inside your stomach, small and large intestines and colon, they will eventually cause you to puff up, gain lots of weight, get sick more often, and take many, many years off your life!
- Also, 99.8% of most doctors would rather you get sick and stay sick as that's how they earn their living!
- Most doctors, so-called diet gurus and fitness experts are either lying to you, or just plain don't know what they're really talking about!"
- If you don't act now, you may not live much longer!
- I want us to become close friends starting "YESTERDAY!"
- Here's a fact that may shock the daylights out of you! Japan refuses to accept a single export from the United States in meat & dairy produce! the Government of Japan is on to something few (if any) people really know about! - That our foods have been filled with "unnatural" things that they aren't supposed to have!
Not to Worry - She's Got the Cure!
For only $37 (pro version) or $57 (hardcore elite version), Dr. Suzanne will give you the secrets. Her plan appears to be based on a cocktail of herbs, extracts, and organic constituents. She promises that "Nothing about the Fat Loss Secret is unnatural or requires someone to do any major action or modification in their lives".
A Reality Check
I'm truly at a loss here.... I don't have the words to express how utterly ludicrous these claims are. It's discouraging that many will not see through the sheer quackery and alarmism that this woman is spewing.
On a quick scientific note, parasites are in fact a legitimate affliction, but certainly not epidemic as the doctor claims. Dr. Gudakunst skipped that minor detail of evidence on that one.
My advice: To avoid parasites, steer clear of Dr. Gudakunst and her weight loss secret.

How many of these can the market take before people stand up and say enough? The problem is that a new "generation" of dieters crops up everyday. My guess is that the people buying this system are either older women who've only just started dieting and are looking for a quick fix or younger women who've only just started dieting, period. I suppose there aren't enough people interested in fitness, health, and weight loss to drive these charlatans out of the market...
ReplyFunny, I never lose weight from having my teeth cleaned and from taking antiworm medication, and I do both often, every 6 months for the medication and every 4 months for the teeth cleaning.
ReplyIn fact there are 'critters' living in your stomach and upper and lower intestines. Without these 'critters' you would die. These bacteria and such are necessary for you to live and function. I can't believe anyone would buy this insane book. That lady is whacko.
ReplyI'm just floored.
ReplyI’m down 2 pound! I was beginning to think that it wasn’t working but the scale moved again this morning!
ReplyDetox fads are the latest installment of crap peddled. But to be fair, a healthy gut is important to overall health which can include fat burning. I don't think any of those detox diets are worth anything as the body detoxes at one speed and you can't go any faster than a plain water fast, but having a healthy gut is important. Here's a good article on healthy gut:
How to get a healthy gut
ReplyI don't even know where to begin on this one! What kind of "plaque" is she even talking about? I know you can get plaque on your arteries as you age if you have high cholesterol for a long time, but it usually has little to do with your actual weight.
And as a microbiologist, I'll give you the scoop on "critters" in your system. Unless you live in a country where intestinal parasites are common, there is a very small chance that you actually have roundworms, tapeworms, etc. You DO have bacterial flora in your intestines that help to produce certain vitamins for you and help to keep you HEALTHY. If you have a good population of good bacteria in your intestines, you crowd out the bad bacteria that do get introduced. Killing all the bacteria in your guts (like what happens when you go on antibiotics) gives you diarrhea and can actually cause yeast infections. This is just another diet for the garbage can.
ReplyI love it! This is great, because even though it is crazy, it shines some light on an interesting topic. We do need our "critters" to keep us healthy, but as we all know, too many of them can give us problems such as candida. It's all about moderation, balance and eating clean healthy foods. Exercise is good too.

I smell another KimKims.
ReplyI think the plaque referred to here is the supposed mucoid plaque lining the intestines.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mucoid_plaque
ReplyThat is even better, then, than the dental (which could be extrapolated to interfere with tasting foods and overeating) or cholesterol plaques, that Spectra mentioned (which could lead to a high cholesterol = decreased insulin sensitivity = weight gain). It is *imaginary* plaque.
ReplyIt's like saying which bread is best for weight loss?
The answer may surprise you...I can see your valid point and in general reviews do a play a vital role when scientific evidence supports it!
ReplyI hate to say it but it sounds like another scare tactic / buy my cure scam sorry Iam not buying it.
ReplyWow - I'm speechless..... The things that people come up with as an excuse for obesity..... and for making money.
ReplyWOW don't you people most obesity comes from stoopid lazy people who don't do crap. Then want a quick fix and will believe any thing the t.v tells them. When your active your body builds muscle, and when you become inactive that muscle turns to fat.(um insert common sense here) Good healthy eating, exercise, and a true desire to effect change in your life is all that is really needed.
ReplyMuscle cannot turn to fat and fat cannot turn to muscle.
ReplyThe real parasites are the perpetrators of this rubbish!
ReplyYou are so right.
ReplyFirst off I'd like to say to Papastoli that I take offense to "most obesity comes from stoopid lazy people who don't do crap" Obese people are not stupid. They really aren't lazy either, they have just never developed the skills necessary to obtain and maintain their desired weight. You obviously have never had a weight problem and have no idea what it's like!
2nd of all, Dr. Gudakunst weight loss secret is just a scam - something to scare obese people into buying her product - however in Mikes article above he has the statement ...
"That our foods have been filled with "unnatural" things that they aren't supposed to have!"
I do believe that all the chemicals and additives that are in todays foods do have a lot to do with the alarming rate that obesity is climbing.
People today need to learn how to eat healthy - to eat things that are fueling their bodies and giving them nutrtion. When our bodies are properly fueled - it eliminates the "always hungry" feeling and gives us the energy we need to lead active successful lifes.
ReplyRemember the post about sports growing up? Most of the responses were people who hated to be forced to do anything active. Isn't this laziness?
ReplyMost of the responses were about hating *team sports*, not anything active. In fact, everyone mentioned activities they enjoy. Just because not everybody can shoot a basketball doesn't mean they are lazy, and the fact that phys ed classes focus on these sports rather than things everyone can do, like running, means a lot of us were forced to sit out the games and act lazy, not by choice.
ReplyI think the PE environment people face as a kid plays a role in how active or inactive they are later on. And it influences their willingness to engage in sports.
I was one of the fat kids and dreaded any activity that put me on the spot and team sports has a way of doing that. Plus, I hated the physical fitness test because I was always one of the last to finish the mile run. I don't think it was laziness that made me dread PE, it was the fat kid complex that followed me around.
When I moved to a new town as a junior in high school, I had the awesome opportunity to skip out of the typical PE class and instead take a class called Weights and Aerobics. This class made health and physical fitness much more personal for me - it just reached me where PE couldn't.
And I've been active ever since.
ReplyYeah, that is what I and a lot of others were saying in the topic about PE. SCal told us to "man up", or agree with whomever told us to "man up". Being unskilled in team sports is caused by not being enough of a man, according to him. So we are unmanly lazy people - even the females, of course.
ReplyI tend to agree with you about additives and other chemicals possibly causing a lot of people getting obese, but I think a bigger part of it is just how refined our diets are. When you don't eat enough dietary fiber (like probably most Americans), food moves through your system a lot more slowly than it would if you ate a primarily whole-food diet. I eat a high fiber diet and I'm a very "regular" person and I seriously doubt I have any plaque in my intestines. But someone like my husband, who barely eats veggies, probably has some backed up stuff in there. Any detox thing is going to make you poop, but the weight you lose is so temporary. It's going to come right back as soon as you eat again.
ReplyFAT ASS AMERICANS NEEDS TO GET THEIR FAT ASSES OFF THE COUCH STOP WORSHIPPING FAKE IDOLS(AMEIRCAN CELEBRTIIES) AND FIND A HOBBY
ReplyWell, perhaps us fatass Americans will not pull your Limey asses out of the next great war and rebuild you economy for you a third time. Howzat suit you?
...and here I only thought French intelligentsia were rude.
Lots of luck, Brit. We had to bail your asses out when you first landed here, we had to bail your asses out in two world wars. I just wonder how long it will be before we have to bail you out from Europe's oncoming changes brought on by immigration.
ReplyOK, apparently no one has seen the pictures on the site. I saw this product advertised and I had to check out the hype of the ad. The page itself is shocking and turns my stomach. I am sure the product sells well because anyone that does not know better would be scared by the worms and stuff in their guts.
No I did not buy it.
ReplyEw, I just saw the pics on her website. I'm sure people will buy that stuff just because of the gross-out factor. Like I said...it'd be a very temporary loss and you would just gain back the weight once you go back to your normal diet.
ReplyWhat came first the parasites (bactria?) or weight gain. There is no proof.
ReplyI think she is capitalizing on the new research about bacteria and diseases, using fake scientific-sounding stuff to con people.
A few years ago, it was discovered that ulcers were caused by a bacteria, rather than by stress like was previously though. Earlier than that, it was discovered that bacteria in your gum can cause heart disease. People reported that the possibility of bacteria causing weight gain was gonna be studied.
So here comes the con artist saying that parasites made you fat, and it makes people go "oh I heard something about that".
ReplyIf you have a parasite like Diphyllabothrium Latum, a tapeworm parasite, you will actually loose weight, not that I recommend it. Yuk!
ReplyAlright first of all yes this may be the case in some rare conditions, but let me tell you one thing what a load of crap. Can anybody say marketing scheme. Look the real reason why people cant lose weight is because A: they don't know how or B: They don't want to put forth the effort it takes to lose the weight they want. It's that simple. Don't buy into this parasite garbage.
ReplyWait - where is the Super XXX Hardcore Near-Toxic Version? Thats the sh*t that I want! :)
ReplyPlus, you have to trust her; look how many exclamation points she has on her website! I think she's serious. I'm going to quit going to my doctor if most of the doctors in the US want to KEEP us sick!
Lose fat - drink the blue stuff under the sink and kill those parasites!
ReplyI have to agree with Papastoli. If you are overweight, it's pure laziness and you have no one to blame, but yourself. 'Stupid' is quite a strong word to use. I feel a better word to use would be 'ignorant'.
This 'doctor' seems way too far-fetched and her program smells of an internet scam. If this person really is a doctor, shame on the medical school that awarder her the title M.D.
Nothing beats good old-fashioned exercise. Meal balancing and eating within reason are the key to being healthy.
Please, please please...use some common sense here, everyone! Hard work always pays off. Work hard and eat healthy. You will only reap what you sow.
ReplyIn my opinion, Mr. Howards's comments don't go far enough to debunk this complete and utter nonsense. I asked Elissa (a former research scientist with a background in food science who does not suffer fools or foolishness gladly) to have a good look at "Dr." Suzanne's claims.
To say they are "misleading" is uh, a bit of an understatement. You can read Eliss's comments here...

ReplyActually I agree to some extent about laziness being the cause of obesity. But I think that is only part of the problem. I was never fat until I had a baby a couple of years ago. It seems my body has abondoned me. I am so tired and sick that to exersize is too hard to do I trybut my stamina is not there anymore it is hard to eat right because now good food actually makes me sick. I get sick on a diet that makes sense. It is very distressing because any attention I pay to my wieght makes it go higher not the other way around.
The only people who make those type of unkind comments are men who have no problem ever losing wieght because for them to gain it is just laziness.
ReplyWith women it is more complicated our bodies are designed to hold fat and water at the drop of a hat.
Regrettably, her system is a product of what our society has become. Anything to avoid accepting responsibility for our actions. Let's be honest with outselves for the moment; at least 90% of obesity cases are lifestyle-caused. I did not become obese from eating salads and jogging everyday, it was in fact because I stuffed my face with junk and never exercised. It was not until I truly took responsibility, which then allowed me to take control and change my lifestyle to a healthy one, that I lost all my weight. This is not the last of such scams, we will keep seeing them because people want the easy way to lose weight where they do not have to accept even some blame for their condition.
ReplyGreat thoughts Don and congratulations on your success! You bring forth 2 monumental messages:
1) You have to take responsibility and control of your own health - a process in which there is no easy fix.
2) It can be done.
I hope you will continue to drop in here with your thoughts.
ReplyThere is nothing in Mike Howard's article to refute this Dr. Gudakunst, just take Mike's word for it. Sheeze, Mike. You are no better than those you complain about. Now, I haven't bought Dr. Gudakunst book, but I did have another holistic health Chiropracter doctor guide me through a colon cleanse. No, I never did see the worms, but I sure lost weight. I lost weight that I haven't been able to lose for years. Also, health problems that I was experiencing are subsiding and going away. There is something to this colon cleanse stuff, and it makes sense. Yes, Dr. Gudakunst is trying to make money off of her knowledge, but so is 100% of every other doctor in the US, and for that part, so is 100% of most working people. We have knowledge, training, experience and we in turn sell that to make money. We all do it. So, why do we critize Dr. Gudakunst for doing what we are all 'guilty' of doing??? I just wish I knew about this Dr. Gudakunst sooner, as she would have been much cheaper than the three bonified dermatologists that I went to that in all three cases couldn't competently diagnose my condition. Mike, should I give you their names so you can tell the world that they too are scam artists?
ReplyIdiot. muscles are muscles. fat is fat.never to turn into one.yes ,muscles shrink. fat , increases from inactivity.
