101 Year old to Run Marathon
As a fitting follow-up to Fitness Tips from the elderly:
101 year old Buster Martin has set his sights on running the London Marathon.
He's not messing around either - having just completed a half-marathon in five hours 13 minutes. Okay... so it's not the fastest time - and by my calculations seems to be the speed of a fast walk.
On finishing the run, the first words of the ex-member of rock band The Zimmers were: "Where's my beer?"Mr Martin, who has 17 children, started work at Pimlico Plumbers in London three years ago because he was bored.
He drank a tankard of ale before signing autographs and chatting to fans near the finish line of the Essex race.
Cheers, Buster.

5 hours 13 minutes is about 23:53 a mile. Gotta love anyone getting out there... it's not about setting records... Though I think 101 puts him 3 years above the current oldest person.
The oldest person now, I believe finished the marathon in 5:40 at 98.
Buster Martin was part of the band that did that hit single too. :)
ReplyThere it is....proof that beer is healthy! Now where did I put my Guinness?
ReplyMy hat is off to Mr. Zimmer.
ReplyWalt Stack was just a baby compared to Buster Martin, but he's still well worth a moment of memory and a toast. Look him up in Wikipedia He started running at 57 and was running marathons and ultras into his 80s. There's a 5K in San Francisco in his honor which I've run once.
From the article:
ReplyWow, good for him! I respect anyone that old who's even still able to walk, let alone do a marathon. I'm sure he's not the fastest person out there, but hey, his time's only a little worse than Oprah's, so that's saying something.
Replyjust an aside, Oprah ran around 4 hour and a half for the full marathon. Mr. Zimmerman ran 5:13 for the half marathon. Oprah was twice as fast. Neither should have their accomplishments belittled because it's awesome either way, but just was saying.
ReplyOh whoops, sorry...I misread it...I thought he ran a whole marathon in the 5:13. My bad!
ReplyWow, that is amazing! I hope I can make it to that age... let alone, be able to walk.
Thanks for posting this...it is nice to know that some people never grow "old."

ReplyIt's heartwarming, but London has an 8-hour time limit.
ReplyLike others above, all I can say is WOW. Puts my feeble excuses to shame... Good luck to him!
