Kirstie Alley Leaves Jenny Craig, Starts New Weight Loss Program?

by J. Foster

Last week Kirstie Alley parted company with the Jenny Craig weight loss program.

"Fired for being too fat!" shouts the National Enquirer headlines.

VP of marketing at Jenny Craig assured People:

"Although Kirstie will not appear in future advertising endeavors for us, she does remain on Jenny Craig's maintenance program and is confident that our program has helped her incorporate positive lifestyle changes that should last a lifetime,"

Which sounds like a whole lot of spin. Alley represented Jenny Craig for over 3 years.

Alley has responded with her own statement:

[...] Somehow, I've also fallen into the position of "accidental" role model for, apparently, millions of people out there losing weight by whatever means. This was something I did not bargain for, or foresee happening.

I guess that's what happens when you appear in full coverage TV ads prancing around singing "It's raining men" and appear on Oprah wearing only a bikini.

That new weight loss program?

"I'm confident that I can create something exciting and innovative: something that if all goes well, will help change a fat America back into a fit America and will offer this country the healthiest, yummiest, easiest and most effective weight-loss program on the market."

I thought she was really good in "Look who's talking too."

Haven't really followed her since then.

You need to swap that image out for something less risky. Getty plays hardball, as we unfortunately learned.

I went back and read right over the subscription agreement at wireimages. Talk about confusing. If in doubt chuck it out.

I think she's beautiful.

I'm cautious of anyone creating a "new" diet though. Healthy can only be rephrased so many ways. ;)

I don't think Kirstie's too "fat", but I dislike JC's attitude about weight loss; I think the overpromote the number on the scale over a person's overall health. I think Kirstie probably got sick of them pressuring her to lose XX lbs, so she will probably still eat their food to maintain her weight loss (they bank on that, you know...people relying on their specific foods). Meanwhile, JC hired Queen Latifah to promote "health" instead of weight loss...that way, if people don't lose any weight eating JC food, the company can say "Hey, even if you don't lose as much weight as you wanted, you're still getting healthier by eating our overly priced, overly processed foods!" It's kind of a load of BS, if you ask me.

I think the idea to launch her new program of Weight Loss is great.
She can advertise something she owns and makes money from.

It proves that you can lose with any diet, keeping it off is the hard part. She should have fired Jenny Craig for letting her down.

Honestly, some people need a weight loss psychologist. Once they deal with the underlying issues they are able to lose weight. "What is your fat trying to tell you?"

Fitness_Fanatic on 02/20/08

People need to ask themselves why do they want to lose the weight. Some do it for health. Others want that slim, sexy body. Others do it for their kids. Men and women differ psychologically, because men are under pressure to get big muscles, and women to become slim.

what if the only underlying issue is you love food? i am a very happy person with no specific "issues" so to say but i really enjoy eating so many different types of foods.

Shanna - I feel exactly the same way! Although I'm not too happy with my career, and it probably has something to do with my lack of motivation to exercise, I just love to eat! Anything and everything, healthy or not (specially not :). So, what then? How do we change that? Is it psychological? Is it an Addiction?

Can't afford it on 02/20/08

They have all stars promoting the Jenny Craig weight loss... They get the food for free no less, or "THEY" can afford it... Why can't someone come out with a weight loss that doesn't cost so much... I believe there would be alot more people in shape and more healthy.... I tried Nutrisystem and the food was awful.... The cost of Nutrisystem was over $350.00 a month...LA wieght loss was more than $700.00 a month for someone to tell you what you can and can not eat....

Here is my (somewhat tongue in cheek) assessment of JC, for what it is worth. It is the only weight loss program I've ever paid for. And it worked for me because:

I am highly motivated by my fear of perky little girls weighing me and tut tutting if I don't lose weight.

Their portion sizes are very controlled so a couple of weeks of their meals serves as an excellent reminder of what my portion sizes really should be, when I've started to veer way off the path.

The drawback to Jenny Craigs, besides the cost of the meals, is that while they are nutritionally balanced, to me they are really lacking in fruit and veg servings and provide you with calories in the form of things like white noodles and lemon cake (they really love the noodles there) when what I really want to eat is whole grain stuff and lots of organic fruits and vegetables. Also, of course they overpackage and overprocess everything. So to make it work for me, after a couple of weeks I insist that I am going to mostly eat my own meals, and purchase the bare minimum from them. They don't like this, but if you paid the membership fee, they don't have much choice. And why would you buy an overpriced overpackaged "tuna kit" from them (a tin of tuna and mayo, a container of fruit packed in light sugar syrup, and some crackers) when you can, for much less, get a small tin of tuna, some whole grain bread or crackers, and some fresh fruit, for less than half the price??? The logic of that defeats me. Still, for me JC is a great way to kick off losing the 10 lbs that seems to creep back every few years. It goes back to those perky little girls with their scale.

Whoa, $350 a month?? That's insanely expensive for overly processed foods. I think most commercial diet programs try to push "their" foods, which are typically pretty nasty IMHO. I did Weight Watchers to lose most of my weight, but I never really bought their products (they make frozen meals, desserts, bread, yogurts, etc.). You can eat real food on WW for a lot cheaper, so that's what I did. Plus, I did it at home and didn't go to the meetings so I never had to worry about the stupid people weighing you in front of other people or anything.

The stupid people weighing me was what kept me on track! Much as I hated it, it gave me something to prove every week. There's just something about being accountable to someone other than myself that works for me. As I said, you can eat your own stuff on JC too, it doesn't make them real happy, but so what.

I THINK KIRSTIE ALLEY IS A FUNNY LADY AND SHE HAS ALWAYS BEEN GOOD A REINVENTING HERSELF AND TAKING THE LEMONS LIFE DISHES OUT AND MAKING LEMON ADE. IF THOSE PICS ON THE ENQUIRER ARE REAL THE HEADLINES 240 LBS ARE A JOKE, THAT BODY IS OVER 300 LBS. I KNOW BECAUSE I AM 5'6" AND I WEIGH 230 AND I LOOK NOTHING LIKE THAT.I WEAR A SIZE 20 PANTS AND A 2X SHIRT. THAT IS EITHER AN OLD PIC OR SOMEBODY IS FUDGING. I SAW HER ON OPRAH AND SHE WASN'T SKINNY THEN IN HER BIKINI BUT SHE DID LOOK WELL. SHE CLAIMED SHE HAD NEVER BEEN OVER 224 LB AND OPRAH SAID THE EXACT SAME THING ABOUT HERSELF. WHY IS IT THEY WANT TO LIE ABOUT BEING OVER A CERTAIN WEIGHT. I MEAN THE WHOLE WORLD COULD SEE THEY WERE CERTAINLY HEAVIER THAN THEY WERE OWNING UP TO. I HAVEN'T SEEN ANY LIVE PICS OF OPRAH LATELY , BUT THIS LAST SEASON I BET SHE WEIGHED THE FABLED 224 OR MORE..
IT SEEMS LIKE WHEN THEY DO LOSE A LOT OF WEIGHT THEY FUDGE ABOUT HOW MUCH THEY LOST AND LIE ABOUT HOW MUCH THEY EVER WEIGHED. I ONCE WEIGHED 270 LBS WHEN I GOT DOWN TO 215 PEOPLE THOUGHT I HAD LOST 100 LBS,
BUT I WAS HONEST AND TOLD THEM MY TRUE WEIGHT LOSS WAS 55 LBS. THE REASON I DID THAT WAS BECAUSE I KNEW PEOPLE FOR THE MOST PART WERE NOT STUPID, THEY KNEW I HAD NOT LOST 100 LBS AND I REMEMBERED HOW GULLED I FELT WHEN THOSE TWO WOMEN LIED ABOUT THEIR WEIGHT.
THEY REALLY DON'T INSPIRE ME AND THEY NEED TO FESS UP, THAT WOULD INSPIRE ME A LOT MORE. OPRAH SAYS U HAVE TO DEAL WITH THE ISSUES OF WHAT MAKES
U FAT.. WELL ONE OF THEM IS WORRYING ABOUT WHAT PEOPLE WILL THINK IF THEY KNOW HOW MUCH U REALLY WEIGH OR HAVE WEIGHED. DEAL OPRAH AND KIRSTIE!!!!

I have been on Jenny Craig for 6 months and have lost the same 10 pounds. I lost 4, gain 3, lose 1, gain 4, etc. It's depressing. The counselors are nice, the food is good, but it's SO expensive. I am in a special program where I don't pay for it, but if I were, I would've quit a LONG time ago. I'm in my early 50's and my metabolism has slowed down a lot. It comes down to burning the calories by exercising which I don't do. I'm too lazy. If only...is what I tell myself each week. If only I could lose 2 lbs. per week, I'd have lost over 50 lbs. already. It's just not that easy. And, I don't cheat! I might as well be eating the same food I ate before. There's no easy fix and the older you get, the harder it is to get it off. So ladies, if you're in your 20's or 30's, get it off now, because later it's going to be a bigger struggle!
