The 5 Bite Diet

Not four and not six.
Apparently five is the perfect number of bites to take at your next meal. Dr Alwin Lewis's book Why Weight Around recommends the five bite approach to weight loss.
- Drink as much of anything as you want as long as it doesn't contain calories.
- Take 5 bites of any food at lunch.
- Take 5 bites of anything at dinner.
- Take one multi-vitamin every day.
- Get a bit of protein a day "on average".
Dr Lewis says that after three days on this diet you will no longer be hungry: "that then resets what you body sees as full". Once you have reached your weight you can go back to "eating normally" (and therefore gain all the weight back and then some).
The truly sad thing is (in this ad/news bite) that Mr Lewis appears to be serious. Do not be fooled. This is not a good way to manage weight and get healthy.
I have no doubt whatsoever that anyone would lose substantial amounts of weight eating just five bites at a meal (Lewis sets an expectation of 13 pounds per week in his book).
How about we check back a year or 5 later before calling it successful?
The site for the diet has the audacity to say "no more fad diets" and lists so many clichés that maybe this is satire after all and I have been fooled.
I though we were over these weird gimmicks?
Hey, biting less, heading for Target to work off stress is a great idea. Good for you!
ReplyStill doing fairly good. despite a few less than ideal days. Have now lost 17 lbs in 21 days. 28 pounds to go till I hit my first goal of 200 pounds. Haven;t been below 200 for more than 10 years. I don't remember when I breached that number. I must have been in denial. The pounds just crept up on me. I remember one time being at the doctor and waiting in that little room and I took a peek at my records. I was horrified to read "patient is obese" OBESE, that can't be me!! I was heavy, overweight, chubby, even fat but surely not obese. But the numbers don't lie.
I have been on so many diets and lost and gained it all back and more. This is what scares me. But I really think I feel more confident this time though.
Eating the way I am now makes me realize how much mindless eating I was doing before, without really enjoying it.
Outside of yard work, I haven't really got into the exercise thing. This fall I hope to get back to jazzercise class`a few tines a week.
Am considering a pilates class. Has anyone ever tried that. Would that be too much for an overweight senior citizen?
As far as supplements go I take a multivitamin pill every day as well as some extra vitamins (B, C, D, E, calcium) They haven't seemed to increase my appetite. I have never taken a diet pill. I was considering asking my Dr for a prescription diet pill when the Fen-fen fiasco hit. Almost 50% of those who took it have heart valve damage They didn't find out till it had been on the market for a few years. That scared me. Now there's Meridia but who knows what might come out in a few years
Hope the rest of you are hanging in there too. Keep posting. I read every one.
Lillian-
17 pounds in 21 days is fab. You can totally do this.
I remember when the doctor told my mom she was obese. I think he said morbidly obese. She came home so upset. She's never forgotten it.
Yes, I have tried Pilates. I think it would be a good thing for you to do. You could get one of the DVDs like Windsor pilates where they show people doing variations, and do whichever one you feel up to. I need to pull out my DVDs and do something. Oh- Jazzercise is good, too. I have an old 80s VHS of Jazzeercise(they have on hilarious workout clothes) that i don't want to get rid of because it is really good.
I agree about the realizing how mindlessly I was eating. Wow. I was just grabbing and grabbing. I feel much better now. (As of today, I've lost 10 pounds, total.)
I went to an expensive diet clinic before this and they wanted me to eat a 900 calorie diet, take shots and take phentermine. I told the doctor that I wouldn't take the phentermine and he said it was pat of the program. So I told him to give me the lowest dose possible. I took one then threw them away. And they never gave me a 900 calorie diet example, so I would have had to figure out calories for the day. Forget it.
So I kinda like that the 5 bite diet is 5 bites because if you eat 7 bites you feel like you are being decadent and cheating. Before, can you imagine how many bites we were eating??
ReplyHi Everybody,
I haven't fallen off the earth, just this thread!
The marathon that I'm doing is this coming Saturday. I've been eating more than 5 bites to keep my energy levels up.
I haven't gained any weight back, still at around 133 lbs. As soon as I return home, I'm going back to 5 bites to lose the last 15.
Everybody seems to be doing great! I'll be back next week....

ReplyGood Luck next Saturday. WOW, what an accomplishment
Go You!!!!!
Hi, I started this diet last Monday and so far I've lost 9 pounds. I take 3 extra bites a day because otherwise I get queasy. I have about 40 pounds to lose. I started last Monday at 176 and now I'm down to 167.
ReplyAlisa,
ReplyWelcome to the thread. Great first week. Keep up the good work!!! And keep us posted on your progress.
Thank you, Lillian! I'll keep you posted...My goal is 136...I hope to be that by like the beginning of October.
ReplySo I fell off the bandwagon and gained 3 pounds, but I'm back on it now :) I refuse to give up and blame everyone else but me.
Today is back on the diet, I'm nervous because I have to start working out, and fear I'll gain muscle and therefore think I'm gaining fat. For those wondering, I have to workout to strengthen up my calves, ankles and arms for my old dance academy. My goal is to be 200 or less by the time I go back, and I know I can do it.
All of your posts really give me motivation. I just came back from the gym so I'm hoping I'll still be able to lose weight.
Good luck everyone! Currently I weigh 206, Wednesday is my weigh day and I'll let everyone know!
ReplyReadyforchange. We are both aiming for the 200 mark. except I have a lot farther to go than you. I don't know about you but I'm going to celebrate when I get there. (I was going to type "if" but I changed it to "when". It will be great to see a 1 on the scale instead of a 2. I have now lost 22 lbs in 31 days. I know Dr Lewis wouldn't think that was enough but I'm satisfied. If I can do that good the next month, wow.
In the past, after hitting the 20 lb loss mark, I would slack off and start backsliding but I'm determined not to let that happen. I have not bought any new clothes but what I have fit a lot better, And I'm wearing outfits that were too tight before. We have a Wedding in 2 months and I'll splurge then.
Walkerlori, how did the marathon go?
Replybitingless and alisa, are you both still hanging in there? I hate to lose bloggers. I always wonder how they are doing.
We can do it, Lillian! :)
That's good you said when, instead of if. I know we can do it! It's funny, the thing that keeps me motivated? I have a goal outfit.
I'm still a teenager, of course I love clothes, why not use it as motivation? For each 10 pounds I lose, I have an outfit picked out to try on, something I was scared to put on before because of my weight. I've gone through 2 different outfits, and have been more then happy.
As of now I'm still 204, it seems like it will take forever to get those last pounds off, but patience is a virtue. I as well have a treat in mind I want after the 200 mark :) good luck! You can do it!!!
:)
Replyso...i took all my ten bites at once today...is this bad?
Replymonday is my weigh in day...i hope i've lost more...i weighed myself this evening and I haven't lost anything...worried
ReplyIf you are sticking that close to the diet, you will eventually lose a lot. Hang in there. I hit some plateaus and got discouraged but eventually started to lose again. If I stay the same for a few days, then I can drop 2 lbs overnight. When I started I gave my self a month to try it. Remember we are in it for the long haul.
ReplyI have to watch my salt too.
ReplyThanks so much for the encouragement, Lillian! Keep up the good work!
ReplyMy birthday was Friday and people keep taking me out to eat and giving me sweets! So I fell off and gained 2 pounds back. But I have to get right back on!
ReplyI fell off the bandwagon, but I'm motivated to get back on. I weighed myself 3 days before my weigh in day out of curiousity...I weighed 202 :) so I'm hoping I can get back on and still lose weight. You guys seriously keep me motivated!
Good luck everyone!
Replyone thing i have learned is that your weight loss willslow down once your body gets used to eating less calories.your body starts to conserve energy and uses lessclloriesto burn. you metobolismislike a fire that needs stoked occasionally to keep burning. what works for me is mixing it up. i eat 5 bites 2x daily one day and then add breakfast the next. but zigzagging your calories to and low calorie day, your body keeps guessing. it keeps your metobolism revved. try it this way and post to see if it works. i know it works for me.
Replyi used to eat only every other day. starve one day and eat whatever i wanted the next. lost 20 lbs a month. the reason was the metobolism never slowed. problem with that diet was that i never learned calorie control. 5 bites diet helped that but i only kept the weight loss going by adding breakfast every other day.
forgive the messed up typing. my keyboard is broken. basically. 1 day 10 bites, next day 15,repeat...
ReplyOops!! Took a four day weekend and ate more than I should. But I'm back on track today. I really think the road to success is not that we don't fall off the wagon but that we get right back on when we do and resist the temptation to throw in the towel. That is what I did before the 5bd days.
ReplyI was wondering about slowing down of metabolism. I think I'll try erin's idea of adding 5 extra bites a day. I'll let you know how it works for me
I totally agree with you Erin.
Interestingly enough, I read not so long ago about what some people call "calorie shifting", and that's pretty much what you mentioned.
I saw by pure coincidence that it works pretty well.
Normally people who do the calorie shifting eat like 1200 calories one day, then 1500 the next , and so on....
But that can totally be applied to the 5 bite.
You just keep surprising your body.
I have stopped the 5 bite diet almost 3 weeks ago, as I left to go on holiday.
But here on holiday (still here til sunday) I have not been feeling like pigging out like I normally do, and I know it's the 5 bite diet that helped.
My body got used to smaller portions.
anyways, we sometimes go to restaurants and I will eat a meak with a dessert, and the next day I wont eat all day until the next dinner. Then the next day I eat like 2 very small meals.
I keep changing, while in the past I would eat 3 huge meals and snacks.
I have actually lost 4 pounds since I have been on holiday.
i am stunned.
But I still plan on getting back to the 5 bite diet on monday to lose my final few.
I do plan on keeping things different, such as 10 or 15 bites one day, and more the next, and so on.
Erin, you mentionned starving one day then eating a lot the next and still losing weight.
ReplyI have experienced that in the past.
I would do like a fast for a day or 2, and then I was terrified that when I started to eat I would put on a ton of weight, but on the contrary I would always end up losing.
There are no dates on these posts. Is this a current forum or is it old?? Today is 8/28/09
Reply8/8/09
ReplyYes meme these are current. Welcome to the group.
I meant to write 8/28/09. Bad key on my computer.
ReplyToday was my weigh in day...I'm at 160!! 16 pounds in 3 weeks! 8/31/09
ReplyThat is fantastic Alisa. Did you do five bites at lunch and five at dinner or did you do a varation?
Replythx so much Tmac! I did five at lunch and five at dinner. I know in 1 of my previous posts I said I did three xtra bites a day, but I'm not doing that now.
Reply9/2/09
So I FINALLY managed to start this without quitting on the first day. I am finishing day 3! And have lost 7lbs. So exciting. I'm keeping with this. INITIAL 10LB MILESTONE HERE I COME. It sucked to keep posting how I was failing at sticking with this. Wish me luck. :)
ReplyAll you people who don't believe this are under the illusion that it is anorexia. You are dead wrong. Anorexia is a disease of the mind. This is a portion control diet. Anyone who has the time to read a very short, informative book could lose all the weight they need to! Yes, you are hungry for about three days, but then, POOF! It disappears! then your body begins burning off all that fat you lugged around. Fast. And it doesn't hurt, and you won't become anorexic. I lost 11 pounds in 6 days. I've lost even more in the month I've done this. It works. As they say, don't knock it 'till you TRY it.
Replyim tired of doing diets that have me spending lots of money. I think im going to try this diet. I'll start posting tuesday
ReplyHi everyone, i have been reading these comments for the past month or so... and i finally decided to start the diet officially...
ok... I am 13 years old and 5'4 and i weigh 68 kg...
im pretty chubby and i need some support in this diet...
but i dont know how to do it in this month evn though i wanna lose some weight for an occasion but the thing is i am a muslim and i have been fasting until 8 o clock this month so i dont know how to fit this into the schedule... any ideas?
ReplyHi chubbywubby,
ReplyDid you mean you fast until 8 o'clock PM?
If so, I would eat your bites when your fast is over for the day. As a growing teenager you might want to eat more than the ten bites that the diet calls for. Just decide what is right for you and stick to it. I don't know what Dr Louis thinks about teenagers on his diet but you don't have too much to lose so if you are healthy to begin with, you should be OK.
Good Luck!
I've kind of hit a plateau but I'm still sticking to it and hope to start losing again soon. Any ideas on how to jump start this again?
Hi everyone,
ReplyI'm going to start the 5BD tomorrow. Any suggestions on how to keep the nasty headaches away for the first three days. Also, I am planning on still having a small cup of coffee with cream & sugar every morning along with 2 meals each 5 bites, has anyone else done this and still had great success? I am a female who needs to lose 60 lbs. The successes I'v read have been unbelieveable compared to the ordinary diets of 1 to 2 lbs off every week. I hope to have all my weight off in 3 to 4 months, not a year. You have all been an inspiration to me and that is why I have made up my mind to start it tomorrow. I hate the feeling of always been sluggish and full. All the best and keep me posted on your success. posted Sept.7/09

Replytinacayne, I'm doing the exact thing you want to do...I have a vanilla latte with cream and Splenda every morning and 2 meal 5 bites each...I have lost 20 pounds in a month as of today. I started 8/10/09 at 176 and today I'm at 156. Good luck! This diet is amazing.

ReplyHi everyone, I have read this forum many times and started to do the diet many times but have failed. I now have my game face on and am ready to shed all this weight. I am quite a heavy lady but am hoping to change all of that. Today I am starting at 316.4, we will see what tommorrow brings.
Welcome to the forum, Heather! Good luck to you!
Replythanks lilian!!
Replyhaha well i might not have THT MUCH to lose but i do need to lose some weight and your right i should have the bites after 8 o clock, and yes i mean PM, but should i have the ten bites altogether because i have to wake up at 4 in the morning and eat then before fasting too... so should i just have five after 8, and five at 4 o clock? waiting for your reply =D
chubbywubby, I'm no expert but I think I'd go for the whole food allowance after 8. Somehow I can't see getting up and eating before 4 am. Wow, I really admire your will power fasting all day.
Replyhaha thx for the feedback... its really quite easy fasting as most of the time im sleeping... i just come home frm school then sleep until 8... its tht simple..
so why do you want to lose weight and wht are your stats + goal weight?
Replymy goal weight would be about 50 kg... idk i will just stop one im look gooood ;)
haha =)
So since last monday, I've lost 11lbs. It's Wednesday today. I'm so happy because at first I couldn't get past day 1. I will say that even though it's getting easier, it's not easy at all. I LOVE food and am surrounded by great restaurants and people who love food as much as me. Today, day 9, the headaches still persist. I don't know if it's because of the significant reduction of meals or the caffeine withdrawls (even though I sneak a coke here and there). My body, though, feels so much better and lighter. I am a little moody but when I get on that scale and see the loss, even if only 1lb at a time, it brightens my day. :)
Just wanted to fill in those giving this diet a shot or those just humoring the idea.
ReplyWell. I'm not really proud of my stats. I started at 245 (111kg) and today I'm down to 220(99kg). Been on the 5bd for about six weeks. I've had a few setbacks or I'd be lower. But the kicker is I'm 65 years old. Let me tell you, it gets harder as you age. You are wise to get it under control while you're young. I'm the queen of yo-yo dieting-- 20 lbs(9kg) off, 25(11kg) on etc, all the way to 245. I never really worried about my weight because my cholesterol. BP and sugar were all low. But lately the numbers have been creeping up. I was seriously considering bypass surgery. While researching that, I stumbled on this site. I liked the idea of the bypass diet without the surgery. Then after reading all the comments I decided this just might work. Before, I would have thought it wouldn't be healthy to eat so little, but if it's healthy for the bypass patients. why not for me. Besides nothing else worked. I don't usually do well with the group things like weight watchers. I'd end up starving myself on weigh-in day and pig out afterward. This blog is just the right incentive I need.
ReplyMy immediate goal is to get below 200(90kg). Of course I need to lose a lot more but right now I just want to see a 1 on the scale instead of a 2 as in 200. Then I'm going to celebrate and treat myself to a manicure/pedicure, and maybe a new outfit.
Hi all! I've done this diet last 2 months and I can testify that it really works! I super LOVE it! For 10 years, I've been yo-yo dieting, but I've never come to 103 lbs!! That's my high school weight and I only done it for 2 weeks. Unfortunately, I went to a 3 weeks vacation and pig out. Now, i weigh 108 lbs. Oh well, I have to get back to my 5 bite diet. I will modify a lil bit of it. Instead of 2 meals, I will do 3 meals. So, that i will not be overwhelmed. Thank u so so much for this posting because it's so inspiring! Keep on posting, guys! And thank u so much. I wont spend bucks for diets no more, instead i will be saving lots of money since i'm satisfied with savoring my lil meal. Super love it!!!
Reply09/10/09- first day of my 5 bite diet..
wow, Lil Princess! how much did u lose in 2 months?
ReplyHi Alisa! I only did this diet for 2 weeks and I've lost 9 lbs. I've been above 110 lbs for 10 years. I've been wanting to be under it and was really amazed with this diet. I've done countless diets but this is the BEST!!! Want to continue with this diet until i reach my goal weight which is 98 lbs according to Dr. Lewis.. So, I have 10 more lbs to go since I backslide..=( But I'm not losing hope. I'm very optimistic with this..Keep on posting, guys!!
Replythx, Lil Princess! Continue being optimistic!
Replyi see... well atleast your continuing with the diet... if i was like you id be so proud... i cant get past day 1!! i keep telling myself oh ill start tmr, no tmr, but tomorrow never comes haha... i would love to stick to it... but just cant... today im trying again... hopefully i wont quit...
WOW thts a significant amount of weight loss.. after how long did you strt noticing a difference in appearance?

patty, i am having the same prblem you used to have.. wht r your stats?
Replyhi everyone as of today 9/12/09 im starting the 5 bite diet. I've spent over 9000 dollars on weight lose and i've never seen a diet or weightloss community as supportive and motivational as you all is about this diet. So like everyone else I'll post every week and wish me luck.
Replyoh by the way im 189.8 pounds and my goal is 150 so im trying to lose 39 pounds.
ReplyChubbywubby- I started at 210 and currently at 197...in less than 2 weeks. It's so hard but worth it. I want to get down to 127. Dr lewis calls for 120 I think but too much I believe. I just wanna get down to the last weight I was happy at.
Reply
