The 5 Bite Diet

5-bites.jpg

Not four and not six.

Apparently five is the perfect number of bites to take at your next meal. Dr Alwin Lewis's book Why Weight Around recommends the five bite approach to weight loss.

  • Drink as much of anything as you want as long as it doesn't contain calories.
  • Take 5 bites of any food at lunch.
  • Take 5 bites of anything at dinner.
  • Take one multi-vitamin every day.
  • Get a bit of protein a day "on average".

Dr Lewis says that after three days on this diet you will no longer be hungry: "that then resets what you body sees as full". Once you have reached your weight you can go back to "eating normally" (and therefore gain all the weight back and then some).

The truly sad thing is (in this ad/news bite) that Mr Lewis appears to be serious. Do not be fooled. This is not a good way to manage weight and get healthy.

I have no doubt whatsoever that anyone would lose substantial amounts of weight eating just five bites at a meal (Lewis sets an expectation of 13 pounds per week in his book).

How about we check back a year or 5 later before calling it successful?

The site for the diet has the audacity to say "no more fad diets" and lists so many clichés that maybe this is satire after all and I have been fooled.

I though we were over these weird gimmicks?

Hey Big Daddy.
I was wondering how you were doing.
I'm a new poster , but I have actually been reading this thread for months and have been following your progress.
I know you have had ups and downs , but as other people have said, you have been an inspiration.
I so used to look forward to your thursday weigh ins!

I have lost 30 pounds with this diet and then off and on , again and again.
I am starting again today, july 13th.
I have got myself motivated again by re reading all the posts.

Huge inspiration.

I , as others here I am sure, hope that you are doing ok!

Ok big daddy I joined the slimmimg station, but let me tell you, you were right save your money. There are chats and forums. Now the chats with Dr. Lewis are only on Mondays and then the forums there are not many posts everyday. I am not sure but I think that the people who joined the site may not have the diet working 100% but they are too scared of Dr. Lewis to tell him that. Also there were not many people posting. i thought people would be posting everyday you know to support each other. Anyway I am doing my modified 5 bite diet cos i have to do what works for me and I do 5 bites of anything 5 times a day and then 3 bites of dessert only at night. (I felt really light headed when I tried to follow the exact 5 bite diet.)

Katie,
I was posting on The Slimming Station for awhile.I began doing a modified version of 5 bites and didn't think I should be posting the details on that forum. I do check back and read posts and chat transcripts from time to time.

I think this will be my new home! I've enjoyed reading everyone's comments.

Hi Lori
did you see some of the mean things written on one of the other forum pages at SS. That's not good. its like they don't want anyone to be honest and they accuse the people of eating more if they say they have gained weight.

walkerlori

I have a pretty thick skin but I have to admit, Dr Lewis's replies to me stung.

I would lose 7 pounds in a week and he would say " Not too bad but not really good enough". "Next week I want you to impress me".

The final straw was when I announced a certain weight goal for Fathers Day. In a nutshell, he said that the number I mentioned wasn't low enough. He said that I needed to quit writing and talking about losing weight and just do it. And to lose weight faster.

He's right but dang, his post was really harsh.

BTW- You should read the past posts from the last couple days, it's really getting ugly between Dr Lewis and someone who is standing up to him. She said he wasn't God!
Ha!

I notice that the dates aren't shown on this forum but that is okay! I will put the date myself :)

Anyways, hi everyone! I hope people still frequent this forum because I really don't want to pay another 50$ to join theslimmingstation..not that its not a good forum its just that, people didn't frequent it as often when I joined (last february) so I felt like it was a waste of money. Anyways I started today :) I have done this diet twice before. The first time I did it for like a week or 2 and I lost I think 21 pounds? The second time I did it, I don't know how long I did it for (because I did it off and on), maybe like 3 weeks and I lost 17 pounds about.

Anyways, I little bit about me. I am a 20 year old University student from Canada. I currently weigh 209, however my highest weight was 232 pounds (which I weighed last january). I am hoping to get to about 150 pounds. Although Dr. Lewis thinks I should strive for 105 (I am 5'3)...I don't think I want to weigh that little..however when I get to 150 I will make the decision to lose more, but I'll cross that bridge when i get to it. So far I have eaten lunch which was half a sandwich with the crusts cut off...I cut it into the shape of a snickers bar LOL. For dinner I don't know what i'll have...can't think that far ahead.
I don't plan on doing any exercise right now...I have done the plan before without exercise and I'll begin exercise later on when I need to amp things up :)

Anyways, I just thought I would check in. How's everyone doing?

Hi everyone-I've been on the 5BD for awhile and also saw Dr. Lewis in person at his office. I, too, would get bent out of shape with his no-nonsense direct style always pushing for more when I thought I was doing great. I've been on "hiatus" for a couple months and shocked to find even though eating more sometimes, I've stayed the same because all I've learned about portion control.

I found Dr. Lewis insulting sometimes and his comments stung but now that I'm going through this process for a while I get it. He just wants to keep pushing you so you don't become complacent. I'm sure coaches on football teams yell at the players sometimes when they aren't doing their best or not training hard enough. Sure, I can lose a couple pounds a week but the truth is, I'm eating more and I can BS myself all I want. Being on this program has helped me see how much I try to screw around. All that game playing over the years ended up with me being morbidly obese -- but I'm not anymore.

Dr. Lewis' style isn't for everyone and is not for the squeamish, but I'm grateful because he really made me stop and take an honest look at myself, and it wasn't pretty.

Hi Jennie,
I'm so happy to read comments from someone who has been following 5 Bites for awhile. I was wondering if there were any long term people out there.

I have to admit, even though Dr Lewis's comments angered me, they have stayed in my head.

Maybe the toughlove approach is the right way to go.

Hi Lori,

I know I had the exact same reaction you did, and like you -- his comments stayed in my head. It feels good to just surrender to it. My friend was talking about this diet she's going on where you eat just protein or whatever the first three days then add in xx amount of ounces of vegetables and fruits with all these recipes....blah, blah, blah. I was just so sick of all that. I love that I just think about what I really want for lunch and dinner and have a small quantity and I'm done. End of story. It's just so freeing.

You are a MORON! If you wouldn't regularly eat 150 fries a day, why would you start now? Just to prove a point? Obviously you came to this page because something sparked your interest in the diet. So don't judge it now all of a sudden because you know YOU don't have the willpower or the drive necessary to do it...this is a community of people that are here to support each other and boneheads like you that come on here and insult everyone's efforts and they're way of eating (for the moment) only push people to get the job done QUICKER. So if you want to shove 30 fries in your mouth GO RIGHT AHEAD. You'll only end up GAINING weight while the people on here who are properly following the diet will be slim and trim.

Hi, everyone:

I am also a slimming station member and have also stopped posting on the boards and updating my weight because I find Dr. Lewis so discouraging and rude! I also cannot handle how he constantly accuses people of lying. Anyways...maybe I'll go back at some point, but I had to take a break. I wish I could get my money back...I cannot believe I paid $50 to feel so depressed :). Walkerlori--that post you referenced above, where you made a father's day goal and I joined in, and Dr. Lewis responded so rudely, that was the final straw for me, too.

Anyways, I have totally been off the 5-bite diet, but am trying to get to the place where I am ready to do it again. I might modify it a little, maybe make it 10-bites, two times a day or something like that. Have any of you succesfully followed a "modified" version of the five-bite diet??

Reply
alicia

Hi Mary - I modified the diet - 15 bites 3x day, about an appetizer portion of food - and it worked for me. I only wanted to lose 10-15 lbs, but my husband lost about 30 on 5 -10 bites 3x day. The key was portion consistency, no snacking and no booze! And getting a new relationship with hungr - that it was a positive sign my body was burning fat and I wasn't going to die. Before I never felt hungry and just ate by the clock or because it was there or I was bored. Hang in there! and happy 4th

Hi Mary,
I remember you from the website. I'm still over there to read people's comments and progress.

I began posting again yesterday. Although his words are tough to read, I thanked Dr Lewis for his no nonsense approach. No matter what people say to him, he never backs down from his position!

Although he sometimes sounds condesending and arrogent, he gave me the kick in the pants that I needed. I've been carrying these extra 20 lbs because nobody has put my feet to the fire.

Being 20- 25 lbs overweight is kind of in a grey zone. You know you want to lose it but there's no urgency. Some of my clothes wouldn't fit but some still did. I didn't like the way I looked but could ignore it because the weight wasn't hindering my normal activities.

Because I wasn't in a hurry, I gravitated toward food plans that typically would lose 1-2 pounds a week. I never stayed on them because the weight loss was so slow and again, I didn't feel a sense of urgancy. I would lose 1 pound, quit, then start a new one.

The end result is I've been 20 lbs overweight and starting/ stopping diets for 4 years!

Dr Lewis made me see that I need to get this weight off, NOW! No more prograstinating.

It's funny, when I thanked him for his approach, he said "Thanks for the comments, I expect you to get the remaining weight off in 2 weeks" And you know what? I'll probably get it done.

As for modifing the diet, I've been adding a third 5 Bite meal after a long exercise session. (Don't tell Dr Lewis, he'll kill me!). I'm training for a marathon, sometimes I need the extra energy. Although you know what Dr Lewis would say, I have enough extra energy around my waist to run 6 marathons!

Anyway, I hope you keep posting, either here or on the website. I always enjoyed your comments.

The best motavation on the 5bd is waking up every morning and weighing myself. Everyday most of the time im dropping weight, there are days where the weight stays the same. Weight increase is a clear sign that you are going off track with the 5bd. The biggest thing while on the 5bd, dont let yourself get bored, keep yourself occupied and thinking. If you still get hungry drink alot of water. also everytime i go to have my 5 bites for lunch or dinner, I drink about a liter of water, then i eat. just so that my stomach feels full.
Anyway started the 5bd 6/22/09 weight 225 lbs, so far today 6/25/09 weight 219 lbs, down 6 lbs, feel good and have plenty of energy. i have been checking the post for about a week and half and there is no more people posting. if i dont see anymore postings by the end of this month, i will stop as well.try to find another blog. hope this helps people out. chao!

I started out as a skeptic and have become a believer.

In May I was on 5 bites for about 3 weeks. I lost about 13 lbs, going from 149 to 136.

Even though the plan was working,I was concerned that my metabolism would slow down and when I ate larger portions, the weight would return.

Also, as I mentioned in an earlier post, Dr Lewis's toughlove, no nonsence approach was hard for me to take (I was being a big baby).

So I stopped watching my portions and counting my bites.

Much to my surprise, eating big portions wasn't as much fun as it once was. I didn't like the feeling of being stuffed anymore. And I couldn't get Dr Lewis's voice out of my head, especially when he says "What's so great about all those extra bites of food. Was the sixth bite of pasta better than the first?"

If I would have stuck to the plan,I would have been at goal weight by July 4th.

Here's the good news.I weighed myself yesterday and only gained 1 pound, I'm at 137. Even with about 3 weeks of being off the diet, I didn't regain the weight.

I'm an official 5 Bite fan, I'm commiting to following it until I get to goal.

I also need to go to Dr Lewis's website and thank him!

Reply
Jennie

walkerlori - that's fabulous! I've experienced the same thing, too. I've had the same revelation. Sometimes I eat more but can't stand the stuffed feeling either. I've lost a big chunk and taken a break, but ready to do the rest now. I saw your post on the forum and it's great. My friend knows someone who just had gastric bypass surgery and she can't eat anything...just drinks protein shakes right now and has dropped a ton of weight already. But I'd much rather do it this way. I heard about an interesting study yesterday on the radio that being overweight is "contagious..." which I believe. If your circle of friends/family is overweight, you'll tend to be, too. It also works the other way -- if you are losing weight you positively affect everyone around you. I want to be that positive force.

Hi Jennie,
Thanks for the support, this diet sounds nuts but it sure does work!

Besides the weight loss, this plan has taught me to eat when I'm hungry, not by the time of day. And my snacking habit is gone!

Have a terrific Sunday.

Today is July 5, Sunday is my official weigh in day. Down to 132 lbs and feel great.

I'm 5'3, my goal for myself is 120 lbs. Dr Lewis says 115, I'll see how I look and feel at 120 before I go any lower.

Besides sticking to 5 Bites, I'm also walking 10,000 steps a day. I bought a fancy pedometer that loads my data onto my computer. It's fun to watch the steps add up.

I am so glad to ready all these comments.
I have lost 30 pounds on the 5 bite diet, and I used to read all those posts.
Then I , as some people here do, fell off the wagon.
I have gained 4 pounds back, so it's not that bad, but I struggled getting back to this diet, and every time I gave in to temptation I felt worse.

I just got back to this blog and felt inspired again.
I have my last 10 pounds to lose, which are the hardest.
But honestly what's even more important than the weight at this time is to feel in control.
That is what I loved about this diet.
I totally felt like a different person when I was in control.

Like I said , I fell off the wagon and let go for a while.
(sometimes things in life happens!!!)
I'm sure some of you can identify with that.
I went back to the start / stop the diet mentality, as I have always done all my life.

But reading the posts again really helps.
I just have to remember that the first 3 days are the worst and that after that it feels so freeing to fell in control and not have food control you.

I hope everyone keeps posting.
It is so motivating!

hey by the way, how is BigDaddy doing?

hi ive never been the perfect weight and ive tried everything to be... ive done it all running, starving myself, puking after i eat and nothing works i mean nothing. I dont eat alot of junk food i actually eat all my fruits and veggies well maybe not all of them but pretty much and i havent seen any good changes come out of it. Ive thought about this diet and ive seen it on tv a couple of times and the people who tried it seem happy with their results. Maybe it will work for me??????

Hi,
the diet working is not the issue.
I mean it makes sense, if you eat 10 bites of food per day, you will lose weight.
The issue is staying on it.
As you will see from these posts, some people have an easier time sticking to it than others.
I am one who lost 30 pounds, then went on holiday and had a hard time getting back to the diet to lose the last 10 pounds.
It certainly is better than throwing up.
And if you have starved yourself in the past, like I have doing some fasts when I would have nothing but water, this is definitely easier.
I hope it works for you.
Worth a try.

Diet74-

How long did it take you to lose those 30lbs? Did you also work out?

Reply

Diet74

I lost 19 pounds in the first 3 weeks.
I actually lost 32 pounds. I started at 152 and I am now 120.
I lost the rest within another 3 weeks.

I did go through ups and downs.
Like any diet, you lose quite fast at first and then it slows down, and that's when sticking to it is the hardest.

One interesting thing I noticed is something Big Daddy has mentioned before.
It seems when I worked out I lost less weight.
Even though I was not eating more.

So I just stopped working out. I figured I would do that once all the weight is off.

One thing I liked to do was weigh myself every morning.
At first it is very exciting as you lose 2 to 3 pounds a day, and then it does slow down , but you still lose.
It was definitely a motivator ...I looked forward to my morning weigh in, because even on some days when I would not lose, I didn't gain, and to me, not gaining was pretty good, as I can put on weight so easily.

I got off track for the past couple of months and have only gained 2 pounds. I am really stunned I have not gained more to be honest.
But also I have had a hard time getting back to the diet.
It's all a matter of sticking to the first 3 days...Those are so tough for me.

I have started this morning and I am struggling. But I have to keep remembering it gets so much easier in a couple of days!

Diet74

Oh and another thing.
I actually modified the diet.
I love my morning coffee and on any diet I have never given it up.
So I do have 2 big cups of coffee each morning, with sugar and soymilk.
And then I have 5 bites for lunch, 5 bites for dinner.
I drink a lot of unsweetened herbal tea , and water with lemon slices throughout the day.
I also try and eat 4 bites of savory stuff, and keep 1 bite of "dessert" , like a big bite of a mars bard or something!!!
I love me chocolate!

It is tough Patty, we would be lying if we said it wasn't!!!
It varies with everyone, but to me the first 3 days are the hardest.
I am on day number 2 and I was very good yesterday.
I am crabby as well!!! LOL
I am very prone to migraines, and if I dont have my morning coffee I will have a migraine for sure.
So that is the one thing I modify in this diet.
That didnt stop me losing weight.
I have 2 large cups of coffee, each cup has 2 tsp raw sugar, and some soymilk.

Other than that, I do the 5 bites, and they are pretty large bites I have to say.
If I can , I try to eat them slowly, and when I am done I try to brush my teeth, assuming I am home.
Brushing my teeth helps.

All through the day I drink herbal tea. I don't put any sugar or milk in that.
Or water with lemon.
That's it.
The first couple of days my stomac hurts, because it obviously wants to eat.
But after that you actually get used to that feeling and it doesnt "hurt " anymore.
For me it did eventually go away.
But I also did some weekend water fasts in the past so I recognize the feeling.

But it may vary with people.
Some people here might tell you otherwise and might experience this completely differently.

Hope it gets easier for you.
Good luck!

Well I'm a vegetarian so the burgers dont do it for me! But the fries!!! God I could eat some right now.
This is my day number 3 and I am very frustrated.
I have only lost 2 pounds in 3 days, but it's that time of the month, so that would explain it.
It's hard to stick to this when you dont see the weight melt away, especially on the first couple of days.
Last time I did this, I lost 4 pounds after day 1, and then 1 pound, and then another...

I am just being impatient I know.
It's just that this diet is very challenging, and the one reward is to see the weight come off quickly.
I mean if one has to suffer, one wants results!!!! LOL

Anyways, the weight can only come off.
It's just a matter of sticking to it the plan.

That's what I have to keep reminding myself!

Have you weighed yourself yet?

Even though today it was tempting and I nearly did.

But I was good. Got a migraine at one pont, but I think it's hormone related.
The first time around I did get some headaches the first few days, but nothing really bad.
So I dont think this migraine was food related.

Hi Diet74,

Wow - you are doing GREAT! 12 pounds in 8 days - that's wonderful!

And, oh yes, I've had "bad days" and eaten what I've wanted. I've even gained some pounds here and there (like at the holidays and my birthday) but then I get right back on. I've also coasted and stayed the same and then started back up again.I was NEVER able to do this as easily before. It was usually just a gradual backslide into the dark hole again. That, in itself, is a basically a miracle to me. And I'm still going.

From my experience, let me tell you that when you start this diet , even though it's quite challenging, it's also exciting because the weight comes off so fast.

Forget the typical 1 to 2 pounds a week....It depends on each person of course, but it's so motivating to lose fast.
I lost 4 pounds after just 1 day when I started this.

It's a great jumpstart.

Good luck to you!

Hi Determined!
Wow, over 25 pounds in 5 weeks, that is so impressive!
I was just replying to My on Fan who is just starting and I'm sure your post is gonna be so motivating to them!

You say you know someone who lost over 100 lbs on this!
That's fantastic!
Did they buy the book? or see the doctor when they started?
Either way, really cool to hear.
Great motivation on this forum!

I'd be interested to see how many people choose to weigh themselves everyday versus those who do it weekly!
So far most people seem to prefer weekly.
I try and do it everyday.

Diet 74,

Well I got off to a good start--I couldn't believe it when I lost 12 pounds in a 8 days. And it was not misreading the scale--I had a doctor's on both days and it was the nurse who did the weighting. Exactly the same clothes and shoes too. That headstart really helped. I have lost over two belt notches, which for me is well over 20 lb. I plan on weighting only once a month--too much drama with weekly or daily weighting. At least that was my experience when I had to loose a good deal of weight about 10 years ago.

My friend actually saw the Dr. Lewis and did the program under his guidance. But he assures me that if you follow the rules, take the vitamin, and see a doctor regularly, all Dr. L. adds is the tough talk that some people find very helpful.

I only find the diet hard when I have to eat breakfast rather than lunch (work schedule): the weight to dinner is very long and I get hungry in the afternoon. I don't have hunger probs when I eat lunch. I do get occasional light-headedness--which is not uncommon with reduced caloric intake. What I really do miss is a drink before dinner or a glass of wine with it--at least on Friday.

My God why is it so much harder this time than the last??????

I keep falling off the wagon.

I do well, and then in the evening I give in .....It's all psychological.....
Drives me nuts! mmmmm nuts.....ok wait, this is the prpblem.
I keep thinking about food!!!!

Anyways, I hope you guys are having more luck than me.

Mind you, I am not gaining weight.
I am trying to control the "piggin' out " aspect of it.
I do start again every morning instead of going on an uncontrollable binge for days like I normally do.

So not losing is better than gaining!

I'll keep on trying!!!

Well I'm no doctor, but it would seem that ANY diet done by a teenager should be supervised by a professional!

At 15 they are still growing so much....

You say he is doing this diet right now?
How long has he been doing it?
How much weight has he lost and how much would he like to lose in total?
If he's been doing it for a while, have you noticed any changes? Like behavior, tiredness, etc....

Anyways, I'm sure you will have other people answer you as well, but I would say see a doctor. This is too risky.

Good luck.

Dear Diet74

I suspect that your problem may that the diet may be somewhat too rigorous and leaves you too hungry. Try this: take 15 bites at each of your two meals. Do you still have trouble with control in the evening? Even a "15 bite" diet is probably going to mean weight loss, just slower. If that works, try dropping to 14 bites a meal for a few days, etc. If that works, drop the bites again. Find the level of portion control that you can handle. That is what this diet is all about: portion control. You will have to do this process when you reach your goal anyway: and then it will be to see how many bites you can allow yourself and not gain weight!

If you find that even eating 15 bites a meal leaves you on the prowl for a snack at night, then the problem is not the low intake. You will have to approach the problem from another angle. Sorry to say it, but you will have to clean all the munchie food out of your house, apartment, etc. Also get rid of the non-munchie food that you might snack on--stuff that is ready to eat or has little prep involved. Then find a hobby or some form of entertainment (other than TV) that engrosses you in the evening. This might have to be getting out of the house to go walking or bowling or biking. At home, reading mysteries or crossword puzzles might do it. Or try painting or model building. The combination of mind-focusing activity and no easy snack available will probably keep you from falling off the wagon. If not, you might need to get a pal to call from Overeaters Anonymous, someone that you can call when the urge to eat strikes. They also have evening meetings.

Most of all, don't get discouraged! You can do it.

Determined,
This is an excellent post on how to stay on his plan. It's exactly how I did it too. I started with 15 bites and worked my way down. I'm currently at 10 bites twice a day. The scale is going downward and I'm comfortable with this amount of food.

If I hit a plateau, I'll decrease again.

Keep on truckin'

Hi Everyone,
I just read through everyone's comments. WOW what motivation!!! Is there anyone my age (65) on this blog. I have been on a zillion different diets and they all worked. I'd lose 20 and gain 25 back. I''ve dieted myself all the way up to 245 lbs. For 5 feet tall that's a lot. It's getting harder and harder to lose on other diets. I think years of dieting has done this to me. Just wondering if age or history will have an adverse effect on this diet. If this works I am determined not to gain the weight back. Anyway I think it is worth a try. What do I have to lose?

YaYa, Yes, you will probably feel light-headed and tired for quite a while. I noticed that this went away after I was on the diet about a month. If this is really hurting your work etc., then you probably should move up your intake to say 10 bites at each meal. Again, it means slower weight loss, but some people find the strict 5 bite rule so hard that they give up--which is the wrong result.

Lillian, this diet works for any age and you do have something to lose ... pounds! The problem with most diets is that they end, you return to "eating normal" and you return to the original weight or more. The whole game in this diet is portion control and it is something that you have to learn for life. The 5 bite regimen will take the weight off fast and even a major loss might be done in a couple of months. Then comes the most important part, finding out how many bites you can eat a day and not start to gain. It will probably be many times 5, but it will be less than you were eating before the diet: the excess eating is what caused the gain in the first place. What you will need to do is determine how much you can eat before you start to gain. And that number of bites will he how you eat for the rest of your life: enough food to live on, but not enough to gain weight!

Welcome Lillian!
I'm 52 years old, the age where it's supposed to be tough to lose weight (pesky hormones).

I've lost 17 lbs and want to lose 10 more. When I stick to 5 bites twice a day, I lose about 5-7 lbs a week.

What I find amazing is that even when I detour off the plan, I haven't gained any weight back.

I think it's because even when off plan, my portions are reduced. A regular plate of food looks huge!

For me, that's been the best part about this diet, decreasing my portion sizes.

Another plus is that my snacking urges are gone. I've gotten used to eating twice a day. This eliminates the nightly snack in front of the tv.

The first 3-4 days are tough but when you get over the hump, it really does get easier.

I need to quit prograstinating and get these final 10 lbs off!
