The 5 Bite Diet

Not four and not six.
Apparently five is the perfect number of bites to take at your next meal. Dr Alwin Lewis's book Why Weight Around recommends the five bite approach to weight loss.
- Drink as much of anything as you want as long as it doesn't contain calories.
- Take 5 bites of any food at lunch.
- Take 5 bites of anything at dinner.
- Take one multi-vitamin every day.
- Get a bit of protein a day "on average".
Dr Lewis says that after three days on this diet you will no longer be hungry: "that then resets what you body sees as full". Once you have reached your weight you can go back to "eating normally" (and therefore gain all the weight back and then some).
The truly sad thing is (in this ad/news bite) that Mr Lewis appears to be serious. Do not be fooled. This is not a good way to manage weight and get healthy.
I have no doubt whatsoever that anyone would lose substantial amounts of weight eating just five bites at a meal (Lewis sets an expectation of 13 pounds per week in his book).
How about we check back a year or 5 later before calling it successful?
The site for the diet has the audacity to say "no more fad diets" and lists so many clichés that maybe this is satire after all and I have been fooled.
I though we were over these weird gimmicks?
Hi.. I am a newbie on this blog.. I did the 5BD last year around this time and lost a lot of weight... I unfortunately have managed to gained alot of the weight back (not all of it but enough to drive me crazy). I see many of you have been successful..So i am starting AGAIN tomorrow...so i will be on this blog everytime i feel hungry..LOL everyone keep posting!!
ReplyCOOL this is restart day for me too, and trust after a week and 2 days of cheating, I AM VERY HUNGRY RIGHT NOW but I know that means the fat is burning off me and anything I gained will be lost. Like I said APril 1st is my new weigh day since I had this bad week but it was for good reason which were bad reasons. Good things happened to me last week and I celebrated with food instead of celebrating with no food rewards so I gotta get my game right again. I still havent dont my 50lb dog track reward so I am refocused and I know that this will be a hard week but Im back on the track and its going to feel good in a couple days especially when body starts feeling lighter. IM ALSO VERY HAPPY to see we have posters who have stayed true to the boards. Some girl came on here a few weeks ago and then suddenly decided she was going to start a yahoo group and I notice she stole some of our people. But this is the only 5 bite board Im true too and will update and I hope everyone else feels this way too and ALSO GOOD LUCK TO ALL AND STAY THE COURSE, and I know by the end of week I will be feeling like my old self again, Im shooting for under 400 calories a day.
ReplyHi eveyone!!
Looks like some good progress has been made since I last posted. The last two weeks have been crazy for me..haven't had time to barely breath let alone check my email. Anyone I have made some progess my weightloss for the the last couple of weeks is about 10lbs. I lost 6lbs as of last Monday and 4lbs as of today. So that puts my total weightloss at a total of 41lbs..and I feel great! I finally had to break down and buy some new jeans cuz mine were falling off and I've dropped 2 sizes! Good luck to everyone..and I don't worry if you fall off the wagon..it's easy to get back on!! Great job!!
Replyi have a question
Replyafter i eat lunch at 11 is it ok to eat a banana at 3 because im really hungry
today is my first day btw
I don't think I would eat a banana, but I would probably increase my liquid, maybe have a little coffee with splenda or some herbal tea, something hot sometimes helps with the hunger.
ReplyCongrats on starting, it's rough the first 3 days, but after that, you'll get used to it and be very pleased with the results.
Instead of fruit, try chewing gum. Ok Im back on track big time, I gotten off for, lets just say for at least a week 1/2 time good 1/2 the time bad. As I described on my last post I celebrated something with food which is bad but I guess if this is a new way of life, there is no way to be perfect all the time. I also sold my Wii and Wii fit so I have a new scale and the totals are a somewhat different. I know most of it has to to do with being bad but also The new scale could also cause some of the problem so let I not giving an official new weight until the first the month to undo some of the damage. I will admit getting back on board was very hard the first few days but I got my groove back (so to speak). I will say I dont think I will be in the 260's club on the the next weigh in but I can be back to just the mid 270's I will be happy to know I got the train rolling in the right direction again. I will go with my new scales weight and forget all the wii info I had. What I dont understand is this new scale has me at 41% fat and a lower BMI than the wii fit so starting tomorrow I will start my exercising of walking 1 mile and running 1/2 a mile plus doing sit-up and jumping jacks again. I miss do my exercising even if it does add some muscle weight. I have taken my spanking now and am taking this as a man. I know where I messed up (by eating bad food for too many days in a row) and to be honest when I was bad, i felt bad, I have felt good the last few days eating the right foods. So Im not going to beat myself up anymore and realize that I will get myself down to where I was which is like a 10lb drop I need. Im just going to consider March as a learning experience and BIG DADDY IS BACK. Once again everyone keep going until you get to your goal weight before you start making concessions to your diet or you will be making post like me. I cant complain I have lost over 55lbs and I when I have next official weight day April 1st, It may be higher than my last and who knows it may not be.
ReplyAs a response to to Yung Ad...
ReplyIf you eat a banana make sure you inly take 5 bites because that will count as a meal..Dr Lewis does say that the first days will be the worst..My recommendation is to chew gum like Big Daddy said or have a tic tac... hang in there it will get easier!!!
Yung Ad - I actually got some chewable Tums for the first few days. My stomach felt like it was turning over on itself from about day 3-5 but it completely went away after a few days. I just had to fight it out. I still get hungry now but it is really physical hunger right before I eat, which is fine. The one sensation I have to fight sometimes is the emotional "fake" hunger that I just want to eat something when I'm anxious, bored, procrastinating etc. but I try to go do something different and distract myself until the feeling passes. When I am really engaged in doing something I'm not hungry at all. Amazing.
Replyit'd be nice to know everybody's stats whos doing this diet and how much they've lost so far..
ReplyIm Fat, Im pissed off right now, I did great on this diet for 3 1/2 months and for some reason I have fallen off the wagon and yes I still have fallen and Im trying for a restart totally tomorrow and my weigh day is being moved to the thursday instead of Weds now. Damn I used to inspire now I NEED HELP and SUPPORT. I dont know how this happen, why this happen, I feel like crap. I hate this over full feeling. I drank beer 3x this week and topped it off with way too much food. But for the third this month I am making a promise to get back on the wagon tomorrow and this will be for good because I refuse to give up and Im just pissed at myself right now, My smaller cloths where starting to fit and now they dont, Hell I bet I gained 15lbs and that aint gonna ease the pain any better. Big Daddy is trying to little Daddy and now he is being Big Daddy again.
I am 5ft 10 I started at 335lbs, as of 3 weeks ago I weighed 271lbs but I bet now I probably weigh 280 something (please dont be 290 something) But this diet works like a charm when you are strict to it, you feel full even though 5 bites sound like nothing, Its hard the first few days but then it gets really easy to where food is an afterthought, unless you fall off the wagon like I have and eat everything in site. Im sorry people but I will never give up never give up and at least I do give everyone around here the honest truth about how my diet is going and right now Ive got to get real and get real quick, I HATE FEELING THIS FAT AGAIN, I HATE FEELING THIS FULL AGAIN, and damn it, Im spent way too much money on food and tomorrow I plan to get this train rolling again and I swear once I get this monkey off my back (even if I fail again which I better not) I will be 5 bite until I reach goal weight.
ReplyHang in there Bid Daddy..you have been such an inspiration and you have to believe you can do it!! In fact, you should know that you can do based on the awesome results you've had so far!! Everyone is going to have set backs and it's ok because we are all in the same boat. We have to be here to support each other! Once you decide you are ready to start again I know you will see the weight continue to drop!! We are here if you need us!!
ReplyHi Big Daddy-the beauty of the 5BD is you can just get right back on the wagon. I fall off sometimes, too, but I just consider it practice for when I get to my goal and I gain a few pounds...well, I can just lose them, too! So don't despair. And you've already discovered you can't eat the mass quantities of food that you used to because it's so uncomfortable. I've notice that too. As long as you're moving in the right direction, it's all good! Don't be so hard on yourself. It took a while to gain the weight and it will take a while to lose it - although not agonizingly slow like all the other "diets" I've been on in the past. It's great that you are feeling those feelings and expressing them and sorting everything out because that will help with getting that monkey to take a hike and go harass someone else instead.
GO 5BD TEAM!
ReplyHey Big Daddy, just hop back on that wagon again, the best thing about this diet is that we all have to do the same thing, and it sounds to me like you know exactly what you need to do to get the ball rolling again. were all here for you,....this is a way of eating for life and not a quick fix, if you fall off the wagon, just hop right back on. :-)
Hilde
ReplyWoman over 50 and I've lost about 60 pounds so far.
ReplyBIG DADDY!!! wassup my dude...yo...dont worry bout it...yes u fell of...so what...u can get back on...ive fallen of the wagon constantly...but i fall of every weekend..but i get back on...and ive kept off the weight that ive lost...yes i do gain some on the weekend..but i loose it during the week...so it pretty much evens out...get me? but dont worry, you know u got my support. ive started to get back on the wagon, ive become a better person over time. and im trying to stick to this diet. it works. and if u gained weight..its ok, dont worry take ur time...we have nothing but time before we go get me? so get back on and start over.look at it as starting new. you started at a new weight. dont stress! thats fudges everything up.
ReplyHey MVDB your back, How ya been. Marthie thanks for the inspiration. Im back on on course now, I dont know what happened. Its like you eat at one place and then you eat somewhere else and forget you already have eaten out and before you know, I have a list of 10 or so place where I have eaten out at. So I have gotten strict on myself and even though Im kind of at a new starting point, I do know what I weighed last week before I started and I feel this week Im back in the game. Yes there was damage done but I feel I got my head back on straight. There has been no eating out this week and I put myself on the same course I was sailing on before my 2 1/2 week on and off cheats. So our low ball weight figure a few weeks ago was 271.4 or something, and I was weighing on a Wii Fit so that thing gave you a -2 extra for cloths so I might have really weighed 273 but all that is irrevalant. My new scale has no minus numbers for cloths and its very odd that even though my weight is up my bmi is lower on this scale, so I dont really understand all that stuff and which one is more accurate. All I know is in 2 more weeks I could possible be in that 260's club I was heading for.
Ok the weight this week is 280.0lbs with a 40.8 bmi with 39.6% fat thing so. I will be checking in during the week. While Im disappointed Im in the 280 club again (Just barely :-). I know it will only be this week, Im just glad to be back in the game again and off the DL so to speak. this diet is very good, because technically It was only 4 days since I have gotten back to strict 5 bite, and my weight dropped dramatically a lot since friday which I didnt post. But it does feel like a start over period as I have been hungry a lot this week but the way I look at it is that the hungrier I get the more fat is being burned. Ive stuck to 5 bites but reality has shown me also that I better have a good plan once I hit my goal weight in about a year because as quick as these pounds go away, they will come back with a vegeance by doing stupid stuff like eating bad (as I have found out) Well, I'll quit crying over spilt milk and everyone KEEP THE TRACK GOING because you dont want to see the scale higher on weigh day because believe me, no food is as good as seeing that scale drop lower. HAVE a good week everyone and Ill be back next Thursday for weigh in and Im always around so I may post during the week.
Replydont worry dude...i can see your back on track.which is nice..trust me ive fallen too...but i got back on it...and i have not gained the 20 pounds ive lost...lol the most ive gained was 10...but even then ive already lost em in like...3 days...so thats awesome...ive actually quit smoking weed...for good..ive said that many times before..but always found myself going back to it. but now im going on 3 weeks sober...but i barely got back on track on monday with the diet...ive already dropped alot of weight...um...it is difficult to stay on specially cuz i got a lil brother who eats haha around me...after ive eaten my 5 bites haha..but ive passed 4 days in the diet sticking to it..before i would just do it on monday...and the rest id have 5 bites for breakfast...and lunch would be a normal dinner...but im happy to inform that i have sticked to it..i have cheated...not that bad tho...i took 5 bites instead of 5 lol..but i dont see that as a biggie...i do work out tho. ive been doin some dvd stuff ive had for awhile...that turbo jam thing...its ok i guess...im still losing weight..i am sore tho...havent workd out in a long time haha..im active playing basketball so that helps break out a sweat..as for water...i drink alot..in my opinion haha...i drink like 4-6 waterbottles a day...also..i just started to drink cranberry juice, cuz i want to clean out my system for thc, cuz i want to get a job haha but thats another story...im not over doing it with the cranberry juice tho haha..what else...ive lost a total of 22 lbs since i started...which translates to on and off...i get off the diet..i get on the diet...but now im commited to stay on it. like i said..i was sad and disappointed if i didnt loose like 10 pounds a day haha...i guess im just tired of being big that i want it to go by sooo fast. but im learning that is going to take a lil longer. i havent done the diet for a full 7 days for christsake haha...(since i started) and to see ppl doin it for months...its giving me motivation to keep on going...maybe im wrong cuz i weigh myself everyday, but yea..i cant help it..the scale is there..in the restroom...so everymorning...and every night i tend to be curious and see...my birthday is coming up..on the 9th. which is weird..cuz ppl are gonna be on their spring break and i have alot of friends that still go to skoo, so they will prolly visit me since their springbreak is gonna be in affect... i dont think i will fall off, but im wrapping my head around it..sayin i wont, so i wont...but we'll see...if i fall off...hey...i can get back on it the next day and loose those extra pounds and then some...i no ive wrote alot..but whatevers...let me know wassup with yall
ReplyHey everyone! Looks like people are getting back on track..which I know is a great feeling. I have to admit I'm feeling alittle frusturated right now so I'm going to vent alittle bit. My sorority's formal is coming up and I have a formal dress I bought for the hs prom that I never got a chance to wear cuz it didn't fit. I was home a couple weeks a go and the dress almost fits so I thought it would be nice to wear to formal but in order to make sure it fits I cut my bites down to 6 a day. I was disappointed though because I only lost 5lbs last week which I know is still pretty good but I thought the numbers would be higher than that. Also I have become slightly addicted to the scale..meaning I weigh just about everyday sometimes more than once a day. I know this is not a good practice because you can flucuate but I honestly have not seen any weight come off this week and I don't get it cuz I've been so strict. I've also been working out. In fact, I just got back from doing 6 miles at the gym. I just don't get it! If any one has some insight I would appreciate it. I only have 14lbs left until my initial goal weight..which by the way I would love to lose another 40lbs past that to be at my healthiest weight. Sorry I'm rambling I just needed to get this off my chest! Hope everyone is enjoying their weekend and I hope I have some good results to report Monday! =)
ReplyThis may sound crazy, but I seem to lose more weight on this diet than when I dont exercise. Makes no sense, but I doing all this exercising and stuff and would lose 1 lb then all I would do is 5 bites and lose 6 lbs, so I dont know. ALl I know is people talk about drugs but food has to be the worst addiction I know. Id stay off the scale everyday, I do it once a week and lately thats been bad enough. Well I hope you make it ok, I dont know this restart I have had has been harder than when I first started, of course when I first started I was having 15lbs drops and now its like 5lbs would be awesome. WEll Good luck to all and glad to hear from you MVDB and that you are doing well too. And MArthie Im sure that dress will fit in time
ReplyI personally think that this is a much better way to lose weight than have a gastric bypass or lap band done. I know very close friends who have had gastric bypass surgery or the lap band and they have multiple side effects which can be life threatening. I saw my friend over the weekend who had lost 80 pounds with the 5 bite diet and OMG did he look great!!!! If you can cut your portions and lose weight why go through surgery????
ReplyI agree. I've known people who had the gastric bypass and the lap band and it just does not seem appealing to me when I can do it this way. This diet works when you do it. I took a small break (I gained a pound back) because I was having some dizziness. I wasn't sure if it was from the diet or something else. My doctor said the diet is fine and it doesn't matter if the weight comes off as fast as it does. He was very pleased with the results. The dizziness is gone (I think it was my ears/sinuses) and I'm back on track now. So, I'll let you know when I lose more weight again.
ReplyOh, and I think my doctor (who had not heard of the 5 bite diet) will be recommending it to some of his other patients as well. I explained the whole thing to him and he thought it sounds safer than the surgeries, and it definitely is better than being morbidly obese. He couldn't believe how well it worked and said I was doing much better than his patients who had been trying to diet for ages.
Hello everyone,
I am new to this site. I have previously tried the 5 bite diet really starting about 3 weeks ago. I did it for 6 days then got sick and really hungry and I ate.
My question to all of you is after you have fallen off the bandwagon, when you get back on is it harder to lose the weight the 2nd or 3rd time around? Or if you just stick to the 5 bites you will be ok?
ReplyBig Daddy, I just wanted you to know that there are a lot of people reading your posts that may never leave a comment, but you are inspiring them all. If you never messed up, how could you inspire anyone? It's seeing that you messed up, learned a lesson, admitted it to everyone, and got right back on track that is inspiring. The doctor says you can't stay on this diet forever, just stay on it until you get to your goal. So you messed up a day....that puts you a day longer in reaching your goal, and some days you may decide that's worth it!
There is another new book I checked out from the library called Naturally Thin that goes hand in hand with the 5 Bite Diet. It's like the author is on the 5 Bite Diet and doesn't know it! The thing I like about it is she focuses more on the things you THINK about eating during the day...and it all meshes with Why Weight Around seamlessly.
Anyway, just know you are helping a lot of people while you help yourself Big Daddy!
ReplyHow old are these comments I don't see any dates???
ReplyTheyre recent...
ReplyAnybody on this site over 65? I'm in good health, but I need to lose at least 50 lbs. I'm 5'1" tall. Bloodwork is good (had it done Jan.09) but I love gardening, etc. and can't do it nearly as well as I used to. Had ankle surgery last year so walking is a challenge for me. I guess I'll just jump in and see what happens! Interestingly enough, I don't eat much, which is why I can't understand not losing, except I suspect I'm insulin resistant. I'm into nutrition and miss my greens if I don't have them once a day. I could probably be a vegetarian, except I like chicken and fish. I think the concept is great--just need to see if it works!
ReplyBig Daddy, 5Biter and all the rest, I'm really inspired by the honesty and encouragement you all show on this board. Big Daddy, your sub sandwiches may have something to do with less weight loss because processed meats (lunchmeat, sausage, etc.) have a high sodium content. So don't be discouraged--just take it into consideration that the results won't be as high when you enjoy your sub sandwiches. And rinse your canned tuna and chicken really well, too-that eliminates some of the excess sodium.
ReplyOk so I am on my third day . I am struggling a bit today I feel like eating more than the recommended. So I am on here typing instead of shoveling food into my face. Any words of advice
ReplyStick with it Mary, I know it's tough, in the long run you will be sooooo happy you did.
Hilde
ReplyHi everyone i have read alot of you all comments and think you are doing really well. Congrats to everyone and stay motivated. I have been looking for a motivational website such as this one because im tired of paying lots of money. But anyways I would like to share my diet success. I've been on the 5 bite diet since Jan 5 of this year and lost 83 pounds and went down 4 pant sizes. I started at 275 pounds and as of today Im 192 pounds. My goal weight is 150. I would like to post my weightloss weekly like you all because i do have 42 more pounds to lose. If anyone have any questions feel free to ask. By the way to all who have kind of feel off the bandwagon don't give up because the great thing about this diet is if you mess up today you can get back on track tommorow
ReplyHi, everyone!! I started this diet on Monday and am really excited to see where it goes. I have a question:
Do you actually have to only take five individual bites, or can you portion off five bites worth of food and then eat that in little bites? I ask becuase I would enjoy my five-bite meals so much more if I could take small bites instead of 5 big bites. What are your thoughts on that?
ReplyHi
5 normal bites...the idea here is to "taste" the food, not fill your mouth up.
Hilde
ReplyHey Mary you can actually eat your 5 bites anyway you would like. But i wouldn't do to the 5 big bites because when i tried it i took a really big bites and almost choked. But i wasn't thinking in moderation. So its all about which ever you'll like.
Replybmi doesnt really matter these days because its based off of weight and muscle is heavier than fat so technically two people can have the same bmi and one person can be healthy and one person can be obese.
people should go off of how they are feeling, and certain health factors like blood pressure, etc.
this diet is extremely unhealthful, not to mention stupid. eat right, exercise.
if that doesnt work then youre doing something wrong.
ReplyC. Ochoa, you obviously haven't tried the diet, so how do you know it's unhealthful? It's the same thing, basically, the doctors put lap band patients and those with gastric bypasses on--if it's so unhealthy, do you think they would do that??? FAT is unhealthy!! You just need to get quality protein and not blow your 5 bites on junk food on a regular basis.
ReplyI have a question--how do liquids like V8 and protein drinks factor into this? How would things like that be counted?
Im Still here everyone, but all is not well in the Big Daddy camp, once again I am having another restart. Ok Im not afraid to admit, my last weigh in was 294lbs so Im up over 20lbs. Food is a drug. Well Im back on but only 2 days so far so I wasnt going to repost until I got back down to where I was but what the hell. Hows it going MVDB how are you doing.
Yes this diet works great, dont let anyone tell you it doesnt, but stay motivated and in fact dont even stray because once you do, fast food starts tasting too good again. I had lost over 55lbs in a few months but now I have lost around 40lbs but I have the scale going in the wrong direction and I am having a hard time getting my head on right again. BUT I WILL AND I WILL REACH MY GOAL. and good luck to all on this and I will start reposting my weekly updates, my new weigh day will be on friday so I dont know my weight right now but last week was 294 but I had a bad days and have been good yesterday and today, so wish me luck.
ReplyThanks Big Daddy for sharing i got off track a couple of times and gained about 5 pounds but as long as you keep motivating your self temptation will be way easier to resist. Ok this week i only lost 1 pound but thats ok because 1 pound is better than no pound. And next Week i hope to lose 5 pounds will keep you all posted.
Reply4-30-09 (I'm dating this myself because the dates have somehow fallen off the posts)
Yay - keep going, Big Daddy! We're going to have to learn how to manage the flunctuations when we get to our goals anyway, so this is just good practice for you. That's what I figure. I've gone off a couple times and gained a few pounds but then get right back on. It's REALLY STUPID because it's really slowing my progress but I am also learning skills that will be invaluable. And the food I overate wasn't even worth it (I can't even remember what it was). Yes, I agree - food can be like a drug sometimes.
Before I would diet, maintain for a while, gain some weight and then just throw in the towel and be right back where I was and much worse. The one thing I never learned was to just lose it again right away (like thin people do) so I consider it a great training exercise.
I was talking to my friend who is naturally thin and she says her weight fluctuates "a lot" -- by 5 pounds! But she said then she just cuts back a bit and loses it right away. Let's keep going no matter what!
ReplyOK looks like we got the boat turned around (the boat being me Ha ha) and we are heading downstream again. April was a very bad month for as I was good and bad and good and bad and good and bad etc for the whole month. You know I dont understand why fast food resturants all of sudden want to give people deals and I fell right into the trap. Like Chic filet had a deal where buy whatever you want as much as you want and then the following week we will give you everything you bought again for free, so stupid me I buy like $30 worth of food for a day or 2 of eating which meant the next week I got the $30 of food again for free. Next trap I fell into Popeyes had a 8 piece mixed deal for $4.99 (not free but cheap) so I bought 3 of them for a few more days of bad eating. Then KFC decides to have free chicken day and so I hit them up a few different times during the day since you only got one free piece at a time. Then of course the local burger joint (an awesome place) decides to have a 2 for 1 deal one day, so I get a couple of those for more days of cheating. SO DAMN WILL THESE PLACES QUIT. So the end result was about a 20lb gain. SO the whole month of April I was good some of the week and bad some of it but when I was bad, I was real bad. BUt now I have been good for almost a week now so I am having my new start weight and its good news.
I lost 6.8lbs this week with a BMI of 42. SO this brings my weight to 288.6. I am now only 17 lbs off from my lowest point on this diet so hopefully in a month I can make that up and then get moving again, because like someone posted above the food wasnt even worth it but I will admit its hard staying off the food wagon but I am trying to keep real focused and not on food and I am very pleased with my weight loss this week. Thanks for the support everyone and keeps going, it sounds like everyone is doing great and I hope (know) I will keep doing great now that I have seen this weight can come back as quick as it leaves if you dont change your eating habits. Well Ill be around the boards if anyone wants to chat and Ill give my weight update next friday.
HEY I do have one question, what is the rule on salads since they are so low in calories. Its still just 5 bites or you allowed to finish a salad if that is all you have.
Replystay away from the salads..eat protein instead,it stays with you longer, or incorporate the salad in with your 5 bites of protein....great source of 5 bite protein... a hard boiled egg....
ReplyI have followed the 5 bite rule now for some 3 years, and I have to say to all of you that IT WORKS. When I went to Dr Lewis on one of my visits, he was very concerned about my blood sugar levels and blood pressure..the first time I let him weigh me, I weighed 205 (HOLY COW) I knew i had gained weight, I just didn’t realize how much…I had gained 70 pounds since high school (I graduated in 1984) I followed his diet and lost 40 Lbs quickly and have not gained any weight back, the first 3 to 4 days are the hardest, you will be irritable and hungry, but stick with it because that will pass, The trick is to do the diet till you loose what you want to loose and weigh yourself weekly, then maintain by not eating GOBS of food daily, if you feel that you are putting on weight, then go back on the 5 bites until you are back at your desired weight. Take the multi-vitamin daily ( your body needs vitamins) and drink plenty of fluids ie: water, crystal light juices, Ice tea, or diet sodas. Dr.Lewis is not some crack pot “diet” doctor, he is also my regular medical doctor and what he has come up with here “does” work. I feel so much better not only physically but mentally as well. All it takes is a discipline!
Good luck to all of you trying all the “fad” diets…I can honestly say that if you follow this one, you will be very happy that you did, Here I am 3 years later remaining at 40 pounds lighter, and eating “5 bites” again to get another 25 pounds off to be at my high school weight of 140. (i’m 5 foot 8 inches tall)
Just remember, this diet costs you nothing ( maybe just for the book at $25 ish if you decide to buy it), you don’t have to purchase special foods, matter of fact, on this diet, you actually spend less on food…it’s all about you and discipline….That’s it.
Good Luck to all of you
Hilde
ReplyAfter losing all my weight on a modified version of this diet I gained it back and am finding it so hard to do the diet again. I can't get past the second day. Anyone have any tips?
ReplyRead my last couple of posts, I too fell off the wagon and gained 20lbs back. Its been very hard for me too to get on tracks but I have been good now for 2 weeks after a cheating too many times in April. I wish you luck and just do what Im forcing myself to do, mentally and physically tell yourself, yes Im hungry but the hunger is burning fat and remember how much better you felt before gaining the weight back. Im pissed at myself for falling off, I was bout to enter into the 260's club now Im back in the 280s club. I just have to remember what got me so much weight loss in the beginning and get back to doing just that, 5 bites only for each meal. Over the course of 2 weeks I have lost over 10lbs so things are looking up. Just get mentally and physically ready for the challenges of getting back on course and dont let anything make you stray. AND I WISH YOU LUCK ON GETTING BACK ON TRACK because it is hard.
ReplyWell all went well this week again, my weight loss wasnt as big as I had hoped for but at least I am back into the swing of things. This week I lost 2.8lb making it a total 285.8 so we are only 14lbs away from a total comeback. Remember last week I talked about all these fast food resturants having free fast food deals. Well add KFC to the mix, until the 19th we have coupons for free 2 piece grilled chicken meals. You know when I wasnt dieting at all, there were never deals and now every week a new distraction. So 2 times this week I had one of these deals (2 grilled white meat pieces and 2 sides and 1/2 a bisquit) but I made it my 5 bites for both meals. But I think the calorie content is much higher than their web site indicates. So I decided that my plan of free food until the 19th is out the window and I am going to stick with the food that got me a 6.8 loss last week. I take a multi-vitamin everyday and fish oil pills, and also a lot of fiber (which may also be another problem) + I drink around 80-100oz of water a day. Im with Alicia it is harder the second time around staying within boundaries but I feel I have really gotten back into the swing of this diet and I dont plan on getting off track again. I have proven to myself that I have no will power yet (which means I was going to let myself have one cheat meal on weigh day, after I weigh of course and that would be it) but I did that for month of April and ending cheating more days than being good and the scale damn told it too. It seems you can put these pounds on faster than they come off and so I have put my foot down for a while of no cheating, 5 bites and that is it. My calorie count has been between 400-600 a day except I now not sure since I did do 2 days of KFC grilled chicken. Like they say a breast is 180 calories, so if the breast is little or big, it is still 180 calories, I dont think so. But it does feel good to back on track and I have only eaten 10 bites a food a day, just this week, they will have to be better bites than last week because I really thought I would lose more than 2.8lbs. But going down is better than up and Im sure next week will even be better. So I hope everyone else is doing very well and stay focused (dont cheat especially if you're like me cause One cheat day ends up being 3 cheat days and that almost 1/2 the week) and it sounds like everyone is doing great and I will too as my first goal is to get back to the 271lb mark (is where I fell off the wagon) and then I can get back into positive territory. Well everyone have a good week, I check the boards often so if you have any good ideas, throw them me.
ReplyIt's 5/8/09 for those who are wondering how old these posts are. Wanted to share my story - while I had just a little weight to lose there were added benefits to this diet I had never experienced with other plans. My allergies cleared up, skin rash gone, bloating stoppped, depression lifted, energy high, good focus and stopped being obsessed with food (good carbs, bad fat, who can keep track)And I ate 15 bites 3-4 times a day which was a lot less than I had been eating but all that my body needed. 6 months of loving my eating and my body and then after a severe flu in February I went back to constant snacking, comfort eating, etc.
ReplyIt hasn't been easy returning to the plan but the results already are so worth it, peace of mind and freedom.
I'll post my question again--how would you count protein drinks like Muscle Milk or vegetable drinks (V8, etc.)if they took the place of a meal?
ReplyIt's suggested that you not consume liquid meals at all during the diet. It's 5 bites of food per meal (2) and unlimited no calorie beverages.
ReplyAlright a much better week than last week. Lost 4.4lbs and am at 281lbs, so Im only 10 lbs off from my lowest weight so Im happy about that. I have been strict to the 5 bite rule and I have backed off the fiber somewhat since I think it was just weighing me down more than helping. They had a sale on Hebrew Nation Hotdogs only 40 calories a dog and the buns were only 80 calories, and one hot dog would be both my meal making my calories for that each meal around 140 and I would do that for both meals, so I had a few under 300 calorie days. Just throwing up some options that might help everyone.
Heard a news story yesterday how, doctors are putting people on super strict diets of 800 calories or less a day and the people on the diet (who looked about the same weight as me (some more some less) were going to see a doctor 2x a week and nonsense like that to make sure all the vitals were right. The blood pressure machine tells me all I need to know and when Im really doing this diet right my blood pressure is good and low like under 120/80. But I was thinking to myself, once I do get myself totally 100% committed which I am but still recovering from my first fall off so I know Im vulnerable so I got to really focus on this. But I was thinking Damn when I hit my goal weight, that I dont want to eat more than 800-1000 calories a day anyways. I dont see why people would go to the doctor 2x a week just cause they are eating a lot less.
Well just doing my update a day earlier this week since I could feel something good was happening and had to see it. I still have a long way to go, My goal weight is 160lbs so I am looking at still needing to lose 121lbs so look foward to more updates with me. For anyone that doesnt think this diet will work, try it for a month and see if you still think that way. And while Im losing good weight each week, I really thought I would of lost more than 4.4lbs but hey Ill take a 4lb lose over a 4lb gain anyday. For those on it and having a hard time, do everything you can to keep on track, I fell off the wagon and gained over 20lbs which Im now fighting to get back to my low weight of 271lbs. ANyways Next week I should be in the 270's club and that will be a good milestone. But 50lbs from my new start is my first milestone I need to achieve. I even get motavation in the mail when Casual Male XL sends me coupons for $20 off, Im like I never want to step foot in that store again. Anyways GOOD LUCK TO ALL AND KEEP FOCUSED AND WE WILL ALL HIT OUR GOALS
ReplyYou all are so inspiring!! I was up until 3:30 am reading your comments. Only thing I can say is I'm in!! I'll be back with my results. I'll weigh myself this morning at Publix.
I think I may have 75 to 80 lbs to loose.
When I was single and wanted to lose weight I just had my coffee with cream and sugar in the morning, drank diet coke all day, then popped in a TV dinner at night which was about 250 calories plus one beer with NO exercise and dropped about a pound a day and it only took me about 3 months to take off this much weight.
But now that I have to cook for my family I've been over weight for about 11 years. Then everyone started talking about how bad it is for you to lose weight that fast.
I'm fed up with these slow moving torturous ways of losing weight, I should have just stuck with what I knew worked and had this over with long ago. But if I HAVE to think about food, I'm screwed. That's why this way of eating appeals to me soooooo much. It's a no brainer!!
So, I know this diet is going to work for me, I also know what it's like some weeks to drop about a pound and wonder how that's possible, but then the following week drop about 7lbs or even more.
Big Daddy you've been a great inspiration t me. We have a lot in common. Keep up the good work as you are inspiring a lot of people and you don't even know it.
Yes, sodium can screw up your results, so can exercise and worst a lot of fiber I have noticed can also slow down the process.
Please wish me luck!
ReplyOk, just weighed in and was floored I didn't weigh 200lbs!
So I'm starting this "diet" already 17 pounds less than I thought! Whoo Hoo!!! High five!!
Ok, now that I got that 17lbs out of the way. I have 58lbs to go.
Right now I'm 183lbs.
58lbs seems so simple, I've been battling that same 58 to 70 lbs for 11 years. I'm so sick of this!!!!!!
I want my body back!!!!
I hate water so I want to share this neat thing I came across. They are the one-a-day powder vitamins/minerals. You mix them with water. they are very strong tasting so I expect I can mix one packet to 32 oz of water and I'll not only be getting my vitamins but flavored water that has zero calories. Nice
I want to thank the person who shared about the hot dogs at 45 calories. Found them!! can't wait to have my hot dog tonight, heck I might have one for lunch and dinner.
Oh, here's another thought, in the past just about anything carbonated kept me from getting hungery. I think I'll try mixing these vitamins tomorrow with carbonated water. I just don't want to go back on diet cokes, that crap is so bad for you and I know carbination works for me in keeping my appitite down to about zero until around 6pm. Do I have to eat during the day?
Best wishes to all. I hope people are still on here!
ReplyYikes, the publix scales are vicious. I always seem to weigh more on those. Good Going on the loss.
Replythanks big Daddy, glad to see you are still here. I really don't want to do this alone. I had my first "meal" but had to take about 9 bites. Not bad for the first time.
It totaled 151 calories so I don't feel bad at all. I may end up doing a modified version, say 200 calories or five bites--which ever comes first.
ReplyAlright I have been reading everyones post for six months, you are all correct it works. I had lost close to 30 lbs the first thirty days. I fell off and am back on since I am over here. I feel great and started back on diet as of the past week. I found out that I need a support element, You guys are it for me. Thanks and I will check in once a week.
ReplyThanks

ReplyHi everyone...I'm sorry it's been so long since I've posted! I am still here and I am still going strong on this diet!! As of today I have lost 69lbs which is 9lbs more than my initial goal for this time period was!! I would like to lose about 40 more lbs. to get to exactly where I want to be and I know it's going to happen! Congrats to everyone who is still staying strong and hang in there to those that have had some slipups. The beauty of this diet is that you can pick up right where you left off even if you fall off! Hang in there everyone!! Happy weight losing!
Replyhey everyone. i started the 5BD today. It wasn't too bad. I just have a few questions that maybe some people can answer?
1. I've read that this diet is STILL a success even if you eat 5 bites for breakfast, lunch & diner (3 meals instead of 2).. has anyone tried this/does it work? Or is everyone here just doing the 2 meals a day?
2. Do you guys really eat ANYTHING? Or do u try to make your 5 bites/meal HEALTHY?
ReplyTHANKS SO MUCH! i will definatly check back on this page for your comments!! :)
hello everyone. I have one question, for the two meals each day, lunch and dinner, what time do most of you eat lunch and dinner? Are they spaced out alot? like 12 noon and 6pm? Or do you not have a set time and just it them whenever? Thank You!
ReplyHello,
I have been reading these posts for months. I can honestly say that seeing all the information on here is inspiring to others contemplating starting the FBD. I personally have done it for 3 days and I had to stop because of the room I created in my jeans. I did it for 2 days last week and lost 4lbs. I did it for 3 days this week and lost 6lbs. I figured I eat this weekend before starting the 10 days. I did it this way because I wanted to see if I could make for more than 3 days. Since I know I can I feel the 10 days will be easier. My blood pressure is high bcuz of my weight and my trainer says I am borderline for sooooo many problems as a result. I now know that it is not a fad diet, but an effort to start changing one's lifestyle. What helps me to start this diet is knowing that I don't have to go through it alone and seeing so many others trying to change their lives without surgery. I will comment on here now since this will be my first time doing more than 3 days at a time and will be able to speak from experience.
Thanks Everyone For Being Here.
