The 5 Bite Diet

Not four and not six.
Apparently five is the perfect number of bites to take at your next meal. Dr Alwin Lewis's book Why Weight Around recommends the five bite approach to weight loss.
- Drink as much of anything as you want as long as it doesn't contain calories.
- Take 5 bites of any food at lunch.
- Take 5 bites of anything at dinner.
- Take one multi-vitamin every day.
- Get a bit of protein a day "on average".
Dr Lewis says that after three days on this diet you will no longer be hungry: "that then resets what you body sees as full". Once you have reached your weight you can go back to "eating normally" (and therefore gain all the weight back and then some).
The truly sad thing is (in this ad/news bite) that Mr Lewis appears to be serious. Do not be fooled. This is not a good way to manage weight and get healthy.
I have no doubt whatsoever that anyone would lose substantial amounts of weight eating just five bites at a meal (Lewis sets an expectation of 13 pounds per week in his book).
How about we check back a year or 5 later before calling it successful?
The site for the diet has the audacity to say "no more fad diets" and lists so many clichés that maybe this is satire after all and I have been fooled.
I though we were over these weird gimmicks?
Meme - great 6.4 loss! Everybody is doing so great! And I just wanted to mention to everyone that the cool thing about signing up on the slimmingstation site is Dr. Lewis has live chats every Monday and you can ask any and all questions. And all of the chats are archived so it helps me to read them and get hints and encouragement that way. And when I log my weight update for the week, he sends me an e-mail right away encouraging me. But this blog is a really fantastic resource, too. The more the merrier! It's great to hear other people's progress and thoughts since I don't really know anyone else on this diet -- although as I'm losing more and more weight, more and more people are interested in what I'm doing.
ReplyIm very excited I've lost 6.2lbs for my first week!! I couldn't be more pleased with these results for the first week! Good luck to everyone else as well!!
Replyon my first day i felt really sick and couldnt sleep well
Replythis also sounds gross but my poop was all liquid
so i stopped but will start again soon
Hi peeps:] since i have lost the 6 pounds i am really excited and the reason is for the last 4 years i have been trying lose weight. I have tried almost every diet in the market and cn say i have spent 8000 dollars at the most last year on diet pills, diet doctors, gym memberships and a whole lot of crazy stuff[lol] But i really wasn't satisfied because i wasn't seeing any results. Not 2 mention i realized who my real friends were. But once i read you all amazing, motivating and encouraging post i realized that you have to actually try and stick to your diet. So thank everyone for the positive post. And i want to tell everybody that this diet is so amazing because i have really noticed how much i was eating and not to mention i dont be hungry, sometimes i have set a reminder to eat. So congrats to everyone and talk to ya on Saturday
Reply=D dont worry Meme, we here for you! yea ive bought exercise equipment...and ugh, but anyway keep it up and keep us posted =)
ReplyHi everyone I want to try this out too but I'm doing 5 bites four times a day It's awesome to see all the support here
ReplyDr lewis is right and all the other people who want to eat only salads and healthy things only are setting themselves up for binges later
ReplyHi Kate! wish u the best of luck! let us know whats cracking with u through out the diet! =D
ReplyWell I am back for my weekly update and maybe I am being too greedy but I am very disappointed with this weeks results. Last week I lost 9lbs and this week I only lost 2.4lbs and I not sure what happened or why my drop this week was so much smaller. I havent changed any of my routines, I still walk 2 miles a day and drink 128oz of water a day, take fiber and multivitamin and only do 5 bites twice a day. I did fall into one snafu this week, I went to go see Gran Torino (Great movie by the way) where I went to eat and split a sandwich but it also had fries with it and I ate 10 bites for one meal but then ate nothing else the rest of the day. That was on Saturday. So maybe these are good results but I was hoping to drop a little more. So my weight is 292.2 and I started at 335 so I have lost over 40lbs in 6 weeks so I guess that is good, but Im just not too overjoyed with this weeks results. BUt at least I didnt go up in weight so maybe I should look at it that way. My goal this week is to eat even smaller portions and try to hit the 50lb mark next week which would be a loss of 7lbs. Ive tried to eat foods with the less amount of fat grams in them but someone told me that you might need a little more fatty stuff to keep the metabolism going and then you will drop more weight quicker. If anyone knows about this, let me know any info you have.
TO SALLY- Help us poor people out and give us the highlights of the Dr Lewis club you belong too. I need all the help I can get and I really got to focus on motivation this week as my post above says
To everyone keep going, I with ya'll but damn I want more than a 2.4lb drop next week
Replybig daddy you are doing awesome you know some weeks you might lose more than other weeks. I don't think the fries are the cause . How about the water is that a lot of water you are drinking maybe not. I still think you are doing great . Keep on with the fighting
ReplyThanks for the support, I wonder about the water thing too, maybe I'll cut back to 64oz a day. Good luck to you too, keep updating us.
ReplyI am doing 5 bites 6 times a day cos I am always moving around at my job so I get really hungry and my head starts hurting. I dunno I guess I'll try to decrease it slowly
Replybig d..dont worry about the small weight loss, i mean cherish it i guess, dont let it discourage you, i think your body is getting used ur new eating habits. i mean no lie ive had times (before this diet) where i would be a certain weight, and ill go take a number two (since i cant say bad words haha) and literally dropped two pounds lol, and the vitamins i take (activit by beachbody) make my urine real yellow and ive done that two, where i weigh myself, go take a leak, then weigh myself again and i dropped a pound or a pound and a half, so i dont no lol just thought i should tell yall that. im sticking to the diet! i will say this, on saturday and sunday i got of the diet, gained some pounds but i already dropped those pounds and then some, so i dont no if thats a good thing, this week i plan to continue through saturday and sunday with the diet, (i guess im trying to experiment with eating habits where i still loose weight) but anywayz keep up the good work! everybody! good luck! =D
ReplyThanks for the inspiration, Fiber and water seems to work pretty good for me in those situations you are talking about. For some reason on weigh day I never have to go before I weigh and wish I would. But if I go after I have my official weigh in, then I just chalk it up to a head start for next week. Well keep going, sounds like you're getting into this a lot more now and thats great
ReplyAlso, if you go to the website (www. theslimmingstation.com), it's $50/year. There's a forum and a weekly live chat with Dr. Lewis on Mondays. The archived chats are very helpful and informative. You can also easily track/graph your weight each week and when you do, you receive comments and encouragement from Dr. Lewis via e-mail. I think it's well worth the $4.16/month that it works out to be.

ReplyNah I can track my weight on paper and I cant see paying someone who is already rich $50 just for the priviledge of posting on his board. Everyone on here gives encouragement to each other and I would rather see more posters on this board then a paid board. I was just saying if you saw any good info on there, bring it this board but you sound more like an advertisement for Dr Lewis's board (no offensive) but if you see any good suggestions, post them here and that goes for anyone else who finds out some good nuggets to try. But we ned to keep this board as vibrant and get more people just to post here instead of paying a doctor (of all things) more money in this economy.
ReplyHey Big Daddy - I completely understand where you're coming from. But for the amazing life/mind change and about 50 pounds so far weight loss I've achieved in a relatively short period of time because of his concepts and vision, I personally think he deserves it from me. It's the least I can do. It's nothing compared to all the money I've given in the past to Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, Diet Center, Slim-Fast,etc. in vain. I didn't mean to sound like an advertisement -- I'm just very excited and passionate about finally losing weight when I had resigned myself to being obese and matronly the rest of my life. It's like a miracle. I'm so excited to finally be excited about this whole subject and to finally find a solution how to get this monkey off my back that's been there for decades. I'm so sick of thinking, ruminating and talking about it.
But, I'll stop now with the endorsements.
ReplyHey everyone I started this diet on Jan. 5 and as of Jan. 14 I've lost 15!! in 9 days!! I love it. I was at my biggest weight 330..I haven't been sticking to it perfectly but pretty close. I started by eating a half bagel with cream cheese for lunch then the other half for dinner..for the first 3 days I had a headache..but that's it. I have been eating so many different things and I never feel deprived..I can't believe how much food I used to eat..I'm now hooked on the chef boyardee mini cups..They are perfect for something with flavor..and they are just about 5 bites..I have a goal and that also helps..My husband and I have booked a trip to Vegas in Sept. and I have got to get this weight off so I can walk around and enjoy it..Its already booked so I have to lose the weight or I can't go b/c I can't walk around being this heavy..it helps b/c I know I have to do it this time..no going back..My husband's aunt had gastric bypass in march of 08 and she has lost 130 lbs..and she told me that the 5 bite diet is the exact same thing without surgery..well I will continue to update..keep up the good work everybody..
Replys_pop great job, that's awesome. I am so happy for you. Let's keep this board alive why waste money for another club thing. I think we should just share each other's secrets.
ReplyI am doing 5 bites 6 times a day. There is no way the metabolism is affected with eating so many times. Also I don,t say anything is forbidden cos when you do that then you crave it and go on a binge. Hey big daddy how many calories do you think the worst and most greasy food might have just curious it can't be more than 400-500 right. I dunno i'm just trying to figure something out. Anyway I don't think we feel like eating greasy food all the time.
ReplyID say the worst thing I eat is a whopper but it takes 2 meals to eat it. My routine is Thursday is weigh day so I can buy a sub (any type sometimes good sometimes a steak like sub) that day as a treat which is 2 meals and then Friday I do my fast food day which is usually my worst calorie day. But Sat-Weds, I usually eat between 400-600 calories a day. Like a meal for me is one turkey hot dog or a few slices of ham and I use bagged veggies and usually they last me a few meals because I take 3 bites of meat and 2 bites of veggies. I also do the bumble bee Salmon packs which around 150 calories and The smart ones prepacked meals which are small I can usually eat on those in 5 bites and they are around 250 calories. I try to mix it up a bit so it doesnt become stale. With weigh day on Thursday, I try to take it real light on Tues and Weds. But like I was saying my worst day is fast food day if I do Burger King or something, if its like chick filet or something in the 400 calorie range, I dont do too bad on that day, but hey Fast food day is fast food day and I only eat 5 bites per meal so like this week I did an Angry whopper without Mayo or Cheese and its like 880 calories with everything so without the Mayo or cheese maybe I cut out 150 or so calories. But beginning on Saturday, its all lower calorie stuff
ReplyI was just thinking how many calories you actually can eat in just 5 bites (10 bites per day). Thats what this diet is really teaching me that portions were way out of control for me. Just pretend I ate an Angry Whopper everyday, that would be close to 900 calories for a days food. So that just makes me imagine how many calories I was really eating when I got so big, it is just insane. 5 bites and I still feel full but back in the old days I would go to places like Sonny's and get all you eat dishes and have about 4 or 5 rounds, which I bet must of been 3000-4000 calories in just one meal. I would love to keep my calories around 400 a day but most days its more like 500 or so and that just eating 10 bites a day. It just blows my mind how many calories I must of been eating before, fast food breakfast, probably lunch, drinking tons of beer and then eating large Pizzas. I still can believe I havent drank any beer since Nov 31st (the day I started) but likewise I cant believe I am about 20lbs away from being able to finally fit back into my biggest jeans again (I have cloths that will fit me all the way down to my goal weight) and as I drop weight I am throwing away the cloths Im growing out of. I know when I hit my goal weight of 160lbs (131lbs to go) that I am still not going to eat over 1000 calories a day. Im thinking that I might just modify this diet a little, 3 meals a day 5 bites for breakfast and 10 bites for lunch and dinner, but thats a long way off, right now its just 5 bites a meal. But I was just thinking how a lot of people (especially the ones that slam this diet) dont realize how many calories you can eat in 5 bites if you really went all out. Well just thinking out loud, stay on course everyone and like you said, everyone stay here on the free boards, it makes no sense to pay a board to post
ReplyWow, it's great to see so many new people and new posts, and congratulations to everyone on their weight losses. It sounds like you all are doing fantastic. I wanted to drop by and say I lost 6.8lbs this past week, which brings my total weight loss so far to 45 lbs. in a little over 7 weeks.
ReplyI find standing on the scale to be a continuing motivator for me. Other diets I have tried, the scale used to discourage me because it seemed like I would be trying so hard and nothing would happen.
S_Pop, good for you! stick with it, it gets easier. I had the headaches the first few days too, but not anymore. I also was over 300 lbs, and doing anything that involved walking more than a 100 yards seemed impossible. Now, walking is much easier, bending, picking up things, etc. is WAY easier. I can't imagine how great I will feel when I get to my goal weight, but it seems I feel better each week as the weight comes off. So, it's only gonna get even better!
Well, keep on posting, and hang in there everyone, remember, summer is coming and everyone wants to look good in their shorts and bathing suits, and with this diet, it IS POSSIBLE!
Hi every1 this week i lost 6 pounds. So now im at a total of 12.4 pounds so thats really great. I weigh now 194 some im nolonger in the 200 pnd category but i still have 44pnds to lose. My goal is a 150 but im almost there. This week im going to start taking smaller bites and add cardio workouts 3 times a week. Im aiming for 7 pounds next week. Congrats to everybody
Replycan you still follow this diet if you are not that over weight...say 130 at 5'3
Replyand will you get the same results? ~1-2 pounds a day?
Amy yes you will but average might not be that high as you have less to lose
ReplyBut you might want to do 5 bites 3-4 times atleast but you I'm sure you will find what works best for you
ReplyI started this diet last week after being inspired by Big Daddy's story. I lost 18lbs in one week and still going strong. Thank you all for the posts.
ReplyHEY MS.C DID YOU EXERCISE TO HELP WITH THE 18 LBS LOST TELL ME WHAT YOU DID? DID YOU FOLLOW THE DIET COMPLETELY LIKE IT IS OOOH OOOH I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO KNOW I AM VERY IMPRESSED!!! GOOD JOB!!!
ReplyHi Ga Peach! I did follow the diet pretty closely. I had 5 bites either for breakfast or lunch (not both). Then I would have 5 bites for dinner. I have not been exercising although I am going to start. I also cut out soda and have been drinking alot of water. Good luck to you Ga Peach and keep us updated! I will also update you on my next weigh in.
ReplyHI MS.C THANKS FOR SHARING THAT WITH ME I WILL TRY TO STAY FOCUS AND FIRM ON MYSELF JUST AS YOUR DOING! BUT TODAY I SEEMED TO HAVE HAD MORE THAN 5 BITES AND YIKES I GOT SO SICK ON MY STOMACH HAS THAT HAPPEN TO YOU OR ANY ONE YOU KNOW ON THIS 5 BITE DIET? I WILL POST MY WEIGH IN IN A COUPLE OF DAYS!!! WISH ME LUCK!!!!
ReplyYes peach, that did also happen to me. About the 5th day on the diet I probably had bigger bites than normal and I felt extremely sick to my stomach. I guess it shrinks faster than we think. Good luck to ya Peach.
Replyhey all

Yeah...I actually met the rum-dumb at his Dr. office in Burbank, CA.
He suggested that I go on his "5 Bite Diet" to lose some much needed weight...
I'm 5' 11" ...and weigh 165lbs!!!
...which on a Height to Weight Chart is: Ideal.
The dude was crazy...seriously.
Reply...and Yes...he is a Doctor of Internal Medicine (think "Dr. House"...only stupid).
This dude is seriously ..... crazy
I wish my only problem was having to lose 10 to 15lbs .......
.... think Dr House and that sounds about my size of, a house but I want to be the size of a small one bedroom
Dog .....I dont know your post is a little pitchy, just doesn't do it for me, what about you Paula, Well I just dont know (suddenly Simon butts in with that english accent) If you dont have weight to lose why are you going to this doctor, you have to the worst example of singing weight loss I ever heard, I vote no (Back to Randy Jackson) DOG its a no to hollywood but keep it up and come back with better sound
........then you leave the room without the golden ticket to hollywood and the 4 judges in the room are just going man why did this guy even audition and suddenly Ryan Seacrest runs in and and says this guy is calling everyone nuts in hallway because ya'll didnt like his singing
ReplyHi everybody,i will not be able to post you all this Sat because ive been asked to fly out town 4 a couple of days by my sleezy boss,(cant turn down the money). Congrats to Ms.C. I also wanted to know how much water should i drink, when i drink under 64oz my mouth is really dry and when i drink more than 128oz i become really full and feel like im going vomit. So can anyone give me a little insight on my situation b4 5:00pm tommorow thanks
ReplyMeMe- thank you. I have been drinking about 100oz of water per day and that seems to be working well for me (at 248lbs). I have also been drinking 4oz of unsweetened grapefruit juice in the morning and 4oz at night. I have heard that grapefruit juice helps to dissolve fat cells but I have also heard that it does nothing. I think it is really helping me alot plus it gives me a really full feeling. Good luck and good job.
ReplyWell I am back for my weekly update and I am much happier with my results this week. Few things I dont understand, why does everyone who so-calls knowing Dr Lewis personally, slam his diet. How do so many people on these boards know him personally? I'm sure he cant be a cheap doctor to see. I think he tells people things they dont want to hear and people say he's nuts. Well my WII fit board must be nuts too because 5'11 and 165lbs would not get you a perfect rating on the board either. Why would someone come here to slam and double space their entire post and do we know the whole story, does this guy have high blood pressure or high cholesterol or the high bad cholesterol or some other health conditions we are not privy too. Well I dont know Dr Lewis personally, but I do know this diet is teaching me portion control that I plan to live with the rest of my life. So there is my rant of the week.
This week I lost 6lbs making my total appox 49lbs in less than 2 months. 11 more days and I will be on this diet for 2 months. I changed things around this week and it makes no sense I lost more weight than the previous week. Still no change on food though, 5 bites lunch and dinner only but I only exercised 1x this week (partially because its freezing here in Florida, the state where your blood turns to water because there is no way I could survive a northern winter). I only took fiber the first 3 days and multivitamin the first 3 days. I also cut my water intake to somewhere between 64oz to 128 oz a day. I started doing this semi exercise of holding my stomach in for as long as possible and it seems like my stomach size has shrink this week. My calories for each day varied with a high of close to 800 calories to a low of 350 calories and like i said before I go from higher calorie days on after I weigh and the next day or so after and then I keep eating less and less calories as the next weigh day approaches. Well everyone keep going and we will all reach out goal. Hopefully next week I will reach my first milestone of 50lbs loss and I better lose more than one pound. So keep updating the boards and lets us all know how much weight you have loss and some ideas that might help everyone, and preferably ideas from people who dont know Dr Lewis personally because Im sure most of 5 bite folks are eating more than the size of 2 snickers bars (I know I do) but at least his idea of 5 bites is really teaching great portion control.
ReplyDown 3lbs for this week..a little disappointed, but still glad I can report a loss and not a gain. Hopefully next week will be better! :)
ReplyHI I'M NEW HERE BUT FIRST AND FOR MOST I WOULD LIKE TO SAY TO ALL WHO HAVE LOST WEIGHT WITH THIS 5 BITE DIET WAY TO GO! YOU GUYS HAVE GIVING ME SO MUCH LOOK FOR IN THE COMING MONTHS WHEN I LOSE THE 40 LBS I NEED TO LOSE. I'VE STARTED THE DIET ON THE 20th OF JAN AND HAVE LOST 5 LBS TO BE EXACT. CAN SOMEONE TELL ME DOES IT MAKE YOUR HEAD HURTS WHEN YOU FIRST BEGIN? MY HEAD IS POUNDING RIGHT ABOUT NOW!!! SOMEONE PLEASE RESPOND? IT'S PRETTY TOUGH TO TO STICK WITH THE 2 MEALS A DAY EATING THING AND 5 BITES BUT WITH THE WEIGHT LOSS I'M PLEASED AND DON'T MIND BEING FIRM ON MYSELF! YOU GUYS GAVE ME THAT BOOST I NEEDED THANKS TO ALL!!!!! (POSITIVE PEOPLE THAT IS)GOOD LUCK EVERY ONE!!
ReplyHi, congrats on starting the diet. Yes, Peach it does seem that most people on here have headaches for the first few days, maybe off and on for a week. I had headaches for the first 3 days and trouble sleeping, but after that I think my body began to adjust to it. It takes some willpower, but just think how great it will be! It gets easier. I've been doing it for about 2 months and it's like a normal way of life for me now. Sure, sometimes I want to eat whenever I want and eat a lot of food, but that's what got me into this predicament to begin with. The best thing besides the weight loss (I've lost 45 lbs so far in 2 months) is that I'm learning a lot about self-control. So, even when I reach my goal weight, I will never be able to eat the way I was eating before and maintain a normal weight, and I've learned a lot about portion control which is definitely going to be important in maintaining the weight once it's off.
ReplyHang in there and Good Luck!
5 BITER HELLO AND THANKS FOR RESPONDING ABOUT THE HEADACHES I FEEL A LITTLE BETTER KNOWING THEY WILL SOON STOP. I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO KNOW DO YOU FOLLOW THE DIET EXACTLY THE WAY IT IS OR DO YOU MODIFY IT? YOU,BIG DADDY, MS.C, AND ALL OF THE OTHERS ARE DOING SO WELL UNTIL IM JUST SO SO DETERMINE TO DO THE SAME. I LOVE THE WAY THAT YOU GUYS JUST MOTIVATE EACH OTHER AND EVERYONE ELSE!
ReplyThanks Peach, I'm glad to hear you are motivated by these posts. That's why I always try to stay positive and let people know that achieving the desired weight loss CAN be possible! If people actually start believing they can do it, they will be able to. This diet is a great tool for losing weight, and the only other ingredient needed for success is believing you can do it!
ReplyTo answer your question, I stay strictly to the diet. I don't eat breakfast, I drink decaf coffee or tea with Splenda in the mornings. I have 5 bites for lunch, and 5 bites for dinner. I take a multi-vitamin for women to make sure I get enough calcium and iron.
I eat pretty much whatever I want for the 5 bites, but I've found that making at least 2 of my bites per meal a vegetable (or fruit) and the other 3 bites protein or pasta (or rice), I am the most satisfied. I avoid sugar and things like mayo, ranch dressing, etc. just because I know for me, personally, those are things that would cause me to take in too many calories or tempt me to eat more than 5 bites. I've even made it through my birthday and the holidays on this diet. I did take 2 extra bites on my birthday, I had two bites of a piece of cake, so that's been about the only sugary thing I've had in almost 2 months.
ga peach, did you know that when you type in all caps on the internet it means you are shouting? Just thought I'd let you know because I don't think that is your intention.
ReplyTO YOU THAT IS! IF YOU DON'T HAVE ANYTHING POSITIVE TO SAY YOU NEED NOT TO POST HERE WITH YOUR NEGATIVITY!!!! FURTHER MORE I CAN TYPE THE WAY I WANT!!!! JUST LIKE SOMEONE TO KILL SOMEONE ELSES OR SHOULD I SAY MY HAPPINESS! I'M TRYING TO BE RESPECTFUL AND NOT USE SOME OTHER BAD LANGUAGE!! SO TO YOU KALLMYER WITH THAT MESSED UP NAME GET A LIFE AND STOP TRYING TO RUINING MINE! THANK YOU! I CAME ON THIS FORUM FOR SUPPORT FROM MY NEW FRIENDS AND YOU WITH YOUR STUPID COMMENT NO ONE ELSE SAID ANYTHING ABOUT JUST HAD TO SAY SOMETHING! BY THE WAY YOUR TYPING DOESN'T LOOK ANY BETTER!!!!! THIS SEEMS SO KINDERGARDEN FOR ME TO BE RESPONDING TO SOMETHING THIS CHILDISH BUT I REFUSE TO LET THIS ONE SLIDE! PLEASE GROW UP!!!
Reply"ga peach, did you know that when you type in all caps on the internet it means you are shouting? Just thought I'd let you know because I don't think that is your intention. (1 reply)"
ReplyHow is this ruining your life or negative? Aren't you over-reacting just a bit? This was not a personal attack against you but just a pointer on internet communication. Sorry if I offended you because that was not my intention.
okay i will tone it down a bit and thanks for the apology!
Replywooooowwww
THIS IS NOT THE SAME AS SURGERY!
Lets say you have a huge box, and you can put as much food as you want, but someone tells you to only put 5 pieces in, would you put 5 pieces in or fill it up?
Now lets say you have a 1x1 box and you were told to put 5 pieces in, it would be easier wouldn't it?
ALWAYS eat good portions, and EXERCISE!
That will work waaaayyyy better than any fad diet.
To those of you who tried it or are on it: Please don't starve yourself, you are setting your body's metabolism up to collapse.
ReplyAll I Know is my 20x20 box is getting smaller that it might be a 16x16 box now and if it keeps going as it is, my huge box (known as my stomach) will be that 1x1 box but I will settle for a 3x3 box. Going the way of the so called smart diets id be down to 324lbs from 335lbs in a less than 2 months instead of 286lbs down from 335lbs. I'll take the second route any day. What I dont understand is why everyone thinks that everyone who does this diet is starving. I dont think eating 5-6 small meals a day is helping people anymore than only eating 2 small meals a day. No one here is thinking of this as a diet but a new way to manage portion controls that most of us dont seem to have a good grip on anyways. The way I was going, surgery would have been needed, but why make another overpriced doctor rich when I can do it myself. Imagine dropping 12 jean sizes in a year or eating the same way and needing a crane to be lifted out of your house in a year, which would you prefer. Once I hit my goal weight, I will never be eating above 1000-1200 calories a day, but that is a long way off. This stuff about a man can eat 2200 calories a day and maintain the same weight seems way off.
ReplyBig Daddy I also prefer this all natural way. I know many people who have had the surgeries only to gain all the weight back plus some, in just a couple years. By shrinking our stomaches the natural way we are not only not risking side effects of surgery but we are learning self control and portion sizes by choice and not by force. I think this will help us more than surgery in the long run.
ReplyI think this diet is WAY BETTER than surgery. I also have known people who had weight loss surgery, and it was not the miracle cure to obesity. It helped them lose weight, but GUESS WHAT? They had to learn portion control as well! That's right. Once they are all healed up from surgery and used to eating again, they are able to eat the wrong things, and eat way too much of something. They also have no problem drinking super high-calorie beverages either.
Also, why would people on this diet be "setting themselves up for their metabolism to crash"? Just because they haven't had their stomach banded or cut to pieces? People who have had surgery are eating WAY less too, does that mean their metabolism is crashing as well?
Please actually know what you are saying when you give opinions. Otherwise, you may end up discouraging someone who desperately needs to lose weight and who is just looking for a reason NOT TO diet.
If you have ACTUALLY DONE the 5 bite diet, lost weight, maintained it (or not maintained it), THOSE are the people that need to give advice. Not people who are not able to imagine being on "only 5 bites" or who think this is starvation.
This is far from starvation. I am way healthier now than I have been in years. I have learned how to eat very small portions, and to avoid super high calorie sauces and fat filled condiments.
I don't mean to sound harsh, but I don't think it's cool when people try to discourage others from fulfilling their weight loss goals just because they may not be able to do it themselves.
Oh, and Ms. C, you are correct. It is better for us all in the long run. If people can't learn portion control before having surgery, they are destined to gain the weight back after the surgery. Everyone I know that had it gained weight back and are now out several thousand dollars, and they still have to go on a diet again. I'm sure everyone has heard of Carnie Wilson too, right? She keeps gaining back weight and having to diet over and over and over. She obviously did not learn portion control and healthy eating just from having surgery.
ReplyHey everybody! It's really awesome to see all the support and enthusiasm here. Personally, I've been dieting and suffering from repetitive compusive eating for about five years and totally wore myself out. I've never been thin my entire life and i feel that THIS is the time to lose weight and start living. I tried to do this diet for a few days now but I would end up binging reaaaally badly at night and gain everything back :(. SO. I'm gonna start posting here to keep me going and it's officially DAY ONE for me today! I think I'll be eating 5 bites of breakfast, lunch and dinner. I'm at 134lbs, hoping to slim down to about 110lbs by May. Wish me luck!
ReplyThis is the end of my week 2 and I am down another 6 lbs. So far that is 24lbs in two weeks. I'm thrilled.
ReplyGREAT JOB MS.C! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!
ReplyThanks GA Peach! That means a lot. Good luck to you too!
ReplyDown another 5lbs this week..next week will be week 4 so I'm hoping to be down 20lbs in one month which is double the goal of my initial weightloss for one month! Congrats to everyone and hang in there! We are in this together!
ReplyGOOD JOB!
ReplyVery Inspiring both Ms C and Marthie, Keep it up and you will reach your goal, Hopefully this week I will break the 50lb mark but I am noticing my big clothes are starting to become too big for me as I hope is the same for everyone. BTW where is MVDB
ReplyGreat Job Marthie!
ReplyWow, great job everyone! You all really motivate me. I'm 5'3" & 165. I've tried lots of diets, especially counting points, calories etc, but with 2 small children at home I found it difficult to maintain. I need something that doesn't require much time. I think I'm going to start this eating plan now. I just had lunch, but I think I'll start right now. No point in waiting untill tomorrow, right? Is there anyone else here that's vertically challenged & had success this diet? I do have the book...have read it numerous times...have tried it several times & fell off the wagon. Anyway I'm here to recommit. I'm also going to start exercising 3x's per week starting next week. I'll keep you updated. I'm a stay at home mom & definitely can't afford the $50 slimming station fee so I'm really happy I found you.
ReplyYes stay on this board, dont waste $50 for the priviledge of posting on a board from a very RICH doctor. We have a good amount of poster that are updating their progress weekly here. BTW good luck and its not as hard as it seems once you get into the swing and you dont have too much to lose. I still have to lose 126lbs to hit my goal weight of 160lbs. Tomorrow is my weigh in day and I will update everyone and hopefully I will hit my first 50lb milestone tomorrow
ReplyYou know when you think you are losing big time weight and then on weigh day the scale gives you a different story. Well thats the tale this week. I will admit this week I ran into 2 snafu's and one was a total accident and one was very good thinking before doing actions. Last Thursday, After my 10 bites for the day I had this pizza craving really bad, so I had a fight in my mind and I was so close to ordering a Papa Johns Pizza then I talked myself out of that and said goto to the local Pizza place and get a few slices, and then I talked myself out of that and finally settled on a preportioned pizza which only added 350 calories to my day and satisfied my craving. WHile its not good, I was much better than adding the 1000 or so calories for the other choices and I was proud of myself for making that choice. Now we get to last night, has anyone noticed how high soda's are in the store recently and now 8 packs are the same price as 12 packs used to be (remember the high fuel prices sent food soaring except now gas is a lot cheaper but food prices arent). So I buy the store brand diet drink and as Im drinking last night, Im thinking this doesnt taste too bad, and DAMN it was a regular caffine free soda not diet, so the night before weigh in I added about 200 extra calories. Also saving money this week I had buy one get one free subs for quiznos coupons and had subs 6 out of the 7 days this week, all 10 bites total (remember one regular sub will make up both meals for the day) and 3 of them were in the 700 calorie range and the others in the 500 calorie range (all regular sized subs) but this week Im set up for all home eating, even bought me a new George Forman grill.
I took all the fiber stuff out of my diet as the plumbing (so to speak is working fine) with just water, but I did take my water intake back up to 128oz's or higher this week and I also have being doing more exercising (which I hope isnt adding muscle weight, I know it sounds dumb but If its going to weigh me down I dont want it). I walk 2 miles a day 5x, do reps of 25 sits ups 3x a day (less towards the end because those muscles in my stomach were hurting) and lots of side to side bend and hip rotations and some jumping jacks. So thats about my week in a nutshell.
And now the time we have waited for after all this whining, FIRST LETS JUMP FOR JOY, I hit my first big milestone in less than 2 months I lost 50lb + pounds, but barely. I lost 1.5lbs this week for a total 50.4lbs total weight loss. I think the subs while being not too high in calories probably didnt help with the weight loss as quiznos isnt as veggie friendly as subway but they are more meat friendly. I would of thought the exercise would of made up for my 2 snafu's this week but maybe Im building up muscle. I have also noticed this diet for me seems to be in 2 week cycles, one week a good drop 5 or more lbs and the next week usually not much of a drop 1-2lbs. Well I hope this helps anyone who is doing this diet, remember to keep going and we will all reach our goals and if anyone sees some flaws in my routines, let me know because Id love to drop 5 or more lbs every week but it doesnt seem to happen that way, but I did past my first 50lb milestone in less than 2 months and now only around 125lbs to go to get to my goal of 160lbs. Everyone have a good 5 bite week and if you have anything to ask me, I check the boards every day.
ReplyBig Daddy
You are doing a great job. I don't think I have the will power that you have. Please don't beat yourself up over the little things, you did the right thing, you had a craving and needed to satisfy it.
My only suggestion would be this: If the subs work for you, go to the store and buy enough sub stuff to make subs for the week. This way you can control what goes inside.
Otherwise, I look forward to your responses each week. Keep up the good work and congrats on the 50!!!
ReplyGreat Job and Congrats Big Daddy!
ReplyBig Daddy and everyones stories have been so motivational. I'v been looking into this diet for a while but I could not find any positive reviews. I really believe portion control is my problem. Besides soda, I eat pretty healthy. I just eat way too much ( I like food). I'm going to start this diet Sunday. I'm so excited and so impressed with everyone! I'm not sure of my current weight but I will post it once I officially start. Keep up the good work everyone and thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyGood Luck Jennifer!
ReplyJust wanted to post to say I lost 3.5 lbs this week. I'm excited about it, my total for 2 months is 48lbs. I've never had a diet that worked this good before. It's so easy to do and only involves EATING LESS, what a concept ! (can't believe I didn't think of it myself LOL).
ReplyCongrats to all who lost weight, I love seeing how well everyone is doing! Keep up the good work.
Also, while I'm going through this weight loss, I'm trying to learn as much as possible about maintenance since that's the hard part, and the most crucial part to staying thin of course. I checked out a book at the library called "Finally Thin" by Kim Bensen. She lost 200 lbs and her book is unique because it doesn't tell you to use a specific diet, it actually describes just about every diet there is so you can pick what's best for you (since every diet will work she says). But the important part of the book is the maintenance part which is very informative.
I would have checked out Dr. Lewis's book, but they don't have it in the library and I'm not going to pay for it ;)
Congrats and Great Job!
ReplyThanks Ms. C. I did not start today. My sister and dear friend talked me into waiting till Monday when we will all start diets (different ones). I did weigh in this morning and I am 174 lbs according to the WII. I'm 5'5". My dream weight would be 120. I liked Big Daddy's reward system so I have decided that I will reward myself with something special when I reach my halfway mark (maybe a spa day, depending on finances). When I make it to my goal, I will chunk all the old clothes and go on a shopping spree! I wish everyone success this week (and beyond).
ReplyThis is week 4 for me and I really wanted to be at a total weight loss of 20lbs for the month and I made it!! I lost 7lbs for this week making my total 4 week weight loss 21lbs!!!
ReplyMarthieO6, that's great! 20lbs in a month??? Who would of thought it. I can only imagine how you feel!!! Congrats.
ReplyCongratulations, Way to Go! It's great when you actually meet your goals, isn't it?! This diet is fantastic. Keep up the good work!
ReplyWow everyone is doing so good on this diet. Jennifer remember once you get going, this is very easy to stay on because you can eat whatever you want, just not much of it. Also only needing to drop 50lbs, you will probably only need to do this for 3 months so have a follow up plan when you hit your goal. Like I was thinking when I hit my goal hopefully in a year, I might increase to add 5 bites for breakfast and few more bites for lunch and dinner but If I start gaining weight then I will be back on 5 bites. Doesnt the free breakfast at Denny's sound good this morning, EVERYONE SAY IT OUT LOUD, HELL NO WE WONT GO.
One of these weeks I am expecting a big drop in weight, my fat is starting to loosen up but is leaving slowly, so hopefully I will have a good weigh in Thursday, but I can feel it coming one of these weeks
ReplyI'm down 3 more pounds. I am so excited! It's only 3 lbs but better than nothing or better than gaining. So thats 27 lbs in just 3 weeks. It doesn't get better than this. Congrats to all of you who are doing an excellent job!
ReplyHey! Good going! Keep it up! 3 lbs is a great loss. You are doing fantastic and sounds like you are losing in record time. It's amazing that this diet keeps working, isn't it?
