The 5 Bite Diet

5-bites.jpg

Not four and not six.

Apparently five is the perfect number of bites to take at your next meal. Dr Alwin Lewis's book Why Weight Around recommends the five bite approach to weight loss.

  • Drink as much of anything as you want as long as it doesn't contain calories.
  • Take 5 bites of any food at lunch.
  • Take 5 bites of anything at dinner.
  • Take one multi-vitamin every day.
  • Get a bit of protein a day "on average".

Dr Lewis says that after three days on this diet you will no longer be hungry: "that then resets what you body sees as full". Once you have reached your weight you can go back to "eating normally" (and therefore gain all the weight back and then some).

The truly sad thing is (in this ad/news bite) that Mr Lewis appears to be serious. Do not be fooled. This is not a good way to manage weight and get healthy.

I have no doubt whatsoever that anyone would lose substantial amounts of weight eating just five bites at a meal (Lewis sets an expectation of 13 pounds per week in his book).

How about we check back a year or 5 later before calling it successful?

The site for the diet has the audacity to say "no more fad diets" and lists so many clichés that maybe this is satire after all and I have been fooled.

I though we were over these weird gimmicks?

5 Biter

Well, I've made it a total of 8 days so far on this diet. And a miracle happened! I weighed myself after 7 days and I had lost 19.6 lbs! I can't believe I lost so much weight. I have never lost that much so quickly before, and I have tried just about everything you can think of. And since I'm female, I usually don't have really big losses, they've always been slow and I eventually lose my motivation. But I am really motivated to continue this, and I have a long journey to go (over 100 lbs to lose) but this was a great start on that journey.

Let me just say this, if you are thinking about trying this and you have a lot of weight to lose, give it a shot. It is SO worth it. The first few days were hard for me, I won't lie, but not so hard that I gave up, and that says a lot. I normally would have given up at the first sign of discomfort.
I enjoy the food I eat, I stick very strictly to 5 bites (and they are normal size bites, I don't try to hurt myself to get it in there LOL), I drink lots of water and I take a vitamin. I have decaf coffee and herbal teas about once a day too.

I will make sure to check back in weekly and hopefully if someone like me is reading this and needs motivation it will help. The other posts on here (the POSITIVE ones) help me greatly.
Congrats to others who are losing weight too btw, and please keep checking back in, I love reading about everyone's progress!

Way to go 5 biter.
I've been on a variation of this diet since February.
I have lost a total of 92 lbs.
I eat 5 bites 3 times a day.
I need to loose around another 20-30lbs.
This diet is great.
You know exactly what and how much to eat without having to count points or calories.
I've been thin before and felt tired, weak and looked anorexic but not with this diet. If anything, I feel better and look better than ever.
In the beginning, I thought about having the gastric bypass and then I found out about this diet. It sounded very simple and much like the diet bypass patients have to follow. so I thought, why have surgery, just try this diet. I worked.
I'll not lie, the first few days are very hard to stick to but so are the first few days after surgery.
Try it.
You can always stop.

Angie - that is fantastic. I'm on the road to losing about 100 pounds. I'm about half way there and am so inspired by your story. I feel so much better, too. I was so afraid I was just going to have to go on being morbidly obese and exponentially increasing my medication but the 5BD has absolutely changed my life for the better. I, too, like the simplicity and structure of it.

Big Daddy and 5biter - Fabulous! Let's keep going and encouraging each other!

Its not like we're eating 5 bites of salad. Instead of eating 1 pound 1/2 of chicken fingers, Im eating 2 chicken fingers. Today I ate a fresco Steak burrito from Taco Bell, but not 8 Taco's and a sugar drink. I was more sick the way I was eating. Why you think youre going to be sick is just in your mind.

thank u for ur concern...but u came a little strong, ur muscular, ur thin...congratulations...we're happy for u. be happy for us we're making an effort. the doctor said, that an overweight person, who weighs the right amount, could go without a bite of food a whole year, he read it in a book that all doctors consider to be the bible. nowthats what he said, instead of shutting this diet down, why dont u see who is in here tryin the diet and for what reasons. we researched this a lil bit more than u did. and well we've tried things that dont work. and quite honestly i dont want to get surgery. im 19 and im tryin real hard not to go off on ur ms bridgette. but understand its not u. it just gets me mad that we're having a positive thing goin on here...with the 5biter, big daddy and myself..and many other ppl supporting us. you're not goin to try and help us and guide us through this diet. then i suggest you get the eff out ok. no disrespect. but understand you disrespected us. or atleast me. we understand this is not the diet FOR YOU. just dont critize what we do. thank u!

with that out of the way...i need serious help ppl...=( its extremely hard for me. im loosing weight yes! but im not stickin to it for the whole week. i start of good. then i fall off. big daddy, any suggestions on how to put ur mind in a state where you want it bad enough. i do want it bad enough. but is there something that u did that helped u stop? i need yalls support. not bridgettes ignorance.

My biggest motivation is just watching people around me and wishing I was thin like that (and I used to be which bothers me). Believe me it isnt easy, I love my beer and used to drink many times a week. But I havent touched a beer in 2 weeks since starting this and dont intend to. I also loved eating out, the whole 9 yards, Appetizers, beer and a full course meal and now I get my one sandwich and it last me for either both meals or at least 7-9 bites. Youre only 19 so a year may seem like a long time, but Im 39 and I know a year is nothing as far as time goes (damn I wish i was 19 again) and I just got to keep telling myself that even if takes a year or more to get down to my goal weight that once I get there I can enjoy ONE beer night a week but I can never eat or drink like I used to. I have also decided to that partying for me can not include food or drinking so I have rewards I set for myself when I hit certain goals. When I hit 50lbs, Im going to allow myself to spend $100 dollars at the dog track (NO FOOD REWARD). When I hit 100lbs, a 2 day trip to the Hard Rock casinos and allow myself $500. So I guess Im trading one vice for another but I am trying to get in the mind set that I dont need beer to party and I dont need food everywhere I go and I will reach the goals I have set for myself. And like I have told you already lay off anything that will give you the munchies.

Well here I am for my second week update. I guess it's good, but it is not as good as I would have liked. This week I dropped 5lbs going from 321 to 316. While I am happy with the drop, I guess I am having visions of grandeur as I was hoping Id be at 300lbs this week. But still in all, I am happy, I mean I'd rather lose 5lbs than gain 5lbs. I have stuck to the diet very well except maybe the bits I am taking are too big. I read the post that the totally combined is supposed to be the size of 2 snickers bars (king size ones I hope :-). I can say that my 10 bites are larger than 2 snickers bars, which makes me wonder if maybe there is too much bread in my bites (ala Subway or Hamburgers) but I would say only 2 or 3 times a week do I have these. Like I said last week, a 6 inch subway sub I can make almost for 2 meals appox 7-9 of my bites for the day. I did indulge in a few McRibs this week (but hey they will be gone soon for a whole year so I gotta get them while they are offered, OFF THE SUBJECT are McRibs a mans thing because woman dont seem as impressed by the Mcrib :-) Other things I eat are things like healthy choice steamers and sometimes I can eat a whole one of those in five bites but they are only like 250 calories. My day consists of the multivitamin and tea or water for the morning hours, 5 bites for lunch at noon, than I try to slam down a bunch of water in the afternoon and than 5 bites for dinner around 6pm each night. The schedule is pretty consistant, some days I am hungry during non eating times, sometimes I am. I would say the worst times are if I wake up at 3 in the morning, Im usually starving but OH WELL there has to be an ends to a means. I would say each day, Im eating around 500-700 calories and I do look somewhat smaller than when I started. I just know when I do get to my goal weight that I am going make sure my eating never gets out of control again. Im starting to think that people that eat to much need the 12 step program too and maybe I will apply those rules to myself. My goals this week are to eat smaller bites and to start exercising. I walked 2 miles this morning and Im one of these people where the fat is all in my stomache, when I start losing good weight, my arm turn to bird arms and my legs have always been muscular (I think because when I did work out when I was younger, I probably only worked out my legs the proper way) so walking has never been a problem for me. It just doing it is the problem:-) Well I guess 19lbs total in 2 weeks is a great start but Im hoping for more than 5lbs next week and everyone doing this KEEP IT UP and throw some advice or updates on this board, but lets keep the negatives nellies in their place as MVDB DID THUMBS UP!

NOTE TO MVDB: GIVE US SOME UPDATES, WE HAVE TO MOTAVATE EACH OTHER AND LAY OFF THE WEED

Just checking in to see how it goes for everyone. Congrats Big Daddy, good loss! Hang in there MVDB, you CAN do this! It's easier if you don't stop and start because your stomach will get used to eating less. I get tempted to "take a break" from this, but I know if I do, it will be hard for me to start over. Once I got through my first 3 days, I didn't want to have to do it again (those were the hardest for me). It is getting easier, and I'm getting used to eating this way.

Thanks for telling us about your success Angie, I find your post motivating when I have weak moments. I lost a little over 1 pound this week. I didn't think I would have another 19 lb loss, but it would have been cool if I had!

I'm still motivated and will keep on going. I don't think I've lost a total of 20 lbs in one month on any other diet I was ever on, and now I've done it in 2 weeks. Hopefully I will lose more this week. I'm determined to reach my goal and I am finding the 5BD to work for me. I like knowing when to stop eating. I know that may sound crazy for some people who don't understand, but when you are as heavy as I am, sometimes there is no such thing as being full.

I have found I have to avoid some foods even with the 5 bites, they would still be too many calories for me. There's not too many things I have to avoid though. I can still eat stuff that tastes great. I am just choosing to avoid certain things this early in the game. Some stuff has so many calories that I never realized I was eating that many calories at one time (typical southern foods like macaroni and cheese, potato salad, that kind of stuff).

Will keep checking in so I can let everyone know my continued progress on the 5BD.

Where did everybody go, no one posted anything last week. I read some other boards about how people were gonna die if they did this diet and how they would be passed out from starvation and let me tell that has to be farthest from the truth. In fact, food is starting to become an afterthought to me and with some days eating healthy bites and some days eating not so healthy bites, the variety this diet offers is fantastic and not to mention the old saying like, don't have too much of a good thing. That kind of mindset has really made this diet work so well. Like last week, one day I had one slice of pepperoni pizza, it was like heaven but in the old days I would have eaten a whole large pizza by myself. Stuff like that makes you appreciate the fact that you can be on a diet where you can have pizza. I try to mix it up somewhat, on good days I incorporate vegetables as 2 to 3 of my bites on my bad days I incorporate none. I also must say this is a milestone, 3 weeks and no beer. Well enough rambling and lets me give you the results this week, and let me also include that I have exercised 5 of the 7 days, walking at least 2-4 miles a day. 3 weeks ago, I weighed 335 or higher since I had no scale that would give me reading that high and as of 12/21/2008, I now weigh 309.5. So this week I lost 6.5lbs which is almost 2 pounds more than I lost last week. While I know this is fantastic, I wish it would come off quicker but Rome wasn't built in a day and losing my fat wont come off in a day, but I am very excited about how things are going. Just a word to all the naysayers out there on all the other boards, give this diet a chance and you might find out it will work. One last thing that was major cause for excitement was the blood pressure machine. When I started this diet, it always measured in the stage 1 or 2 prehypertension range and this week, it was below the the normal level the first time in ages, I forget the 2nd number but the first number was 109 over something. Well I hope everyone has a good Christmas and I hope some people will come back to board, where you at MVDB.

That is great Big Daddy. Really, I think this way of eating (diet) is a testament to our misguided views on what a healthy portion should be. You used to eat a whole pizza, now one slice is plenty. It wouldn't hurt all of us to try this diet to remind ourselves that we are eating way too much.

I don't really understand the "naysayers" point of view. When people have gastric bypass, that is all their stomachs can handle after the surgery. You are just doing what they are doing minus all the risks of the internal replumbing and scars.

Keep up the good work.

Good lord Big Daddy, you're doing great! I had a sinus infection for 3 weeks and allowed that to be my excuse falling off the wagon. I let my honey (who I made read your posts) stuff me full of food and never even tried to resist. (Bad Idea!) Someone already mentioned that its extra hard to stop then start over again. (Lesson well learned) I gained about 2 of the 13 pounds I lost & now I'm back on the 5BD. I am very inspired by your progress & proud of u for getting some exercise in. I'm using u as motivation & am back on track so keep up the good work, your efforts are admirable & keep me going!

Hi again everyone!
Just wanted to drop in and tell everyone that I lost 7 more pounds. So, I have lost a total of 27 pounds in 3 weeks.
I have been going pretty strictly on the diet, because I want to hurry up and get this extra weight off of me! The sooner it is off, the sooner I can do the things in life I really enjoy, like traveling and dancing, swimming and wearing sexy clothes!
It's amazing how much you give up when you become overweight. Even just going to the movies was something I gave up because I wasn't sure if I'd fit comfortably in the seat. Plus, there's also things I would give up doing, or would avoid doing very often because I had become embarrassed to be in public.
I know what people think and how they act when they see someone very overweight dining out, or bowling, or at the beach or whatever. They get stares, laughs, and are treated rudely (or like they aren't human). It's not fair, but it's just how society is. I got tired of being the fattest person everywhere I went.
I want to lose weight so that I can stay healthy and active for as long as possible. Life is too short to keep cutting out all of the fun things in life just so I can eat all I want. I'd rather be out doing fun stuff than overeating.
It's getting easier, it's becoming my new way of life, and I feel fantastic. If you're someone just surfing in and are thinking about doing this diet, try it! You have nothing to lose but weight. It's not something that someone who is only a little overweight should do for very long, but for someone who is morbidly obese, it is a Godsend.
Don't think of all the reasons why you shouldn't do it, think of all the reasons why you should. Don't listen to anything negative, listen to the positive. There will always be negative people, and those people are usually the unsuccessful ones, or the ones who are scared to try it, or the ones who just don't want to do it, and they don't want anyone else to be successful on it. You know the old saying, misery loves company!
Stay positive, stay strong, and we can all do this and be success stories! We will prove all the naysayers wrong.
Merry Christmas everyone!

thats crazy 5, because in my city, i'm very well respected, so i dont get all these people laughing at me, i'm a rapper so i have that level of respect in my city. now i completely agree with you. as soon as i'd go out my comfort zone,id feel like everyone is watching. have you ever been offered something to eat like at a party or somewhere, and i most of the time turn it down, and later stress over the fact on what they thinking, like "dude, i no your hungry!" you know, and i refuse to eat it for that reason too, i feel like thats what they think. this one time, this lady offered me something to eat i said no thank you, she responded, "why, are you on a diet or what?" and i mean it wasnt that hurtful, but i mean it is still a little hurtful you know, because if you're overweight then you MUST be dieting if you're not hungry. i mean i feel like everyone at a resteraunt is looking at me like, damn you can tell he's hungry cause he is here. and i thought that dont bother me, but it does, deep down. now, i do get some ladies to look my way and give those eye flirting moments, if i do say so myself i am handsome, haha, just overweight. plus, i dont have like a beer belly or triple chins, cause i do have muscle, which is my good point. that i'm 328 but i'm active enough to be passed on as an athlete haha. this diet is changing me mentally more than it is physically at this point. i said i was going to start on the 1st, i have, but not consistantly. but my mentality on being overweight has drastically changed. i'm realizing my fears, and everything. my mom would often ask me, why dont you leave the house? my stepdad said, maybe i was embarassed about being overweight (no, he's not mean, he said it the nicest way possible) (and i dont leave the house cause i love my house. i enjoy my own company, plus music is my baby, so i'm either listening or writing) anywayz, i no i have fallen off but that does not mean this diet has not changed me. it has made me realize everything. i mean i have visions of me being skinny, being "normal" like if being overweight is not, i no it is, but it does hurt when they talk about death and all that. im happy for everyone and their success, don't worry, i'm coming too! i'm just getting my head on straight ok? ive lost 7 pounds since the 1st, i mean its not double digit weight loss, but like i said, i changed my way of thinking cause of this diet, so it has been beneficial for me. don't worry ppl, i stop by everyday to see any new posts. keep it up ppl! you guys are my inspiration! =D

Yes! I definitely understand what you're talking about. If someone offers you food and you turn it down and all that. It's like the weight is an issue, even if it shouldn't be, but it's the first thing people see, so I always assume it's what they are thinking about. Especially women. Women are very hard judges on each other. As a woman, I think that sometimes my friends and I would judge women more harshly than we would guys, but we would still judge men as well. I would never be rude or hateful to anyone even when I was not overweight, just because they were overweight, but there are some people who are. So, society is a concern, but it's not my only concern, of course, my health and how I feel about myself is the most important.
I'm glad you are realizing some of your concerns. This diet definitely brings up lots of stuff that requires thinking about. And you really have to be 100% committed to the idea of losing weight and wanting to be thin. Otherwise, it will seem like a lot of trouble, and you'll wonder why you are putting yourself through this. But if you can answer those questions honestly, you'll really be motivated to lose the weight. Like I had to admit I really wanted to be thin (and stop pretending it was OK to be as overweight as I am) I don't like the way I feel, I don't like the places I have to shop for clothes, I don't want to have health problems. But once you find the reasons for yourself, this 5 bite diet is an excellent tool to get you where you want to go because it works so fast.
So keep trying, and definitely think things over, I'm learning a lot about myself as I am going through this process.

Hope everyone had a good Christmas, I made it through it and stayed on track. Once again Im happy with this weeks results but DAMN I WANT MORE :-) Well the results this week are, I dropped 4.4lbs so now I am down to 305lbs and have lost 30lbs in less than a month. SO when I looked at it that way, I guess it is really good. I exercised 4 out 7 days this week walking 3 miles each day and I wonder if maybe walking that much is building too much muscle in my legs and that maybe the exercising is messing up the weight loss since muscle weighs more than fat, maybe someone can give me an opinion of this. Well my next check-in will be on Jan 1st (I like to start at the beginning of the month for totals) and will use that day as my update day for the month of January (I know ya'll can hardly weight (ha ha). So I will be back Thursday for an update and thanks for the support and hope everyone has a happy new year. Let me give a shout out from FLORIDA all the way to my LA supporters, thanks

So glad to see everyone is doing so well. I'm getting through the holidays pretty well. I don't have any desire to eat my way through a pound of chocolates and dozens of cookies like I used to. It's a miracle. I'm looking forward to starting the New Year at a much lower weight than last year and continuing on to my goal. I know we can all do it! I have a completely different relationship with food now - a much healthier one.

Happy New Year, Everyone!

yo BIG DADDY, how would you describe your behavior as well as your feelings. do you have mood swings. are you happy, more energetic, do you have to convince yourself over and over not to eat over 5bites, how is the psychological aspect affecting your eating habits and how you deal with people on daily basis. are you much more confident being that u've lost 30pounds? im sure many of us is wondering these things, this goes out to 5 BITER and everyone else WHO IS TRYING THIS DIET.

Hey MVDB, my feelings on this diet. Im hyped, losing this much weight in one month is awesome. I know next month it will probably be half (hopefully not but Im being realistic). I dont have mood swings, as I said earlier food is just becoming an after thought to me and with only taking 5 bites, it such a quick part of the day that I eat at noon and 6pm everyday and usually within 5 minutes I am done eating. I am very happy, the mindset has come that I cant goto fast food resturants and just gorge food down like I used to, but I can goto fast food and get one thing I like and that usually last either 1 or 1 1/2 meals. This also makes me very happy because I am saving so much money that its unreal. A normal fast food eat out for me was $10 or more and real resturants $30 or more and shopping for food would be a few hundred, but now its like a few bucks and Im set. Energetic I have always been buts its getting easier to get to parts of my body, like trying to put on socks was getting to be a hassle, trying to cross my legs but now I can feel the difference big time.

I dont have to convince myself at eating time that I can only have 5 bites, but thats not saying that I dont get hungry during the day or night sometimes, sometimes Im starving but I hope thats when the body is eating fat, but other days Im not hungry at all, I do drink a lot of water during the day. Psychologically the weight loss does make me very confident but I also have rewards set for myself at certain goals at every 50lbs I lose, so I tend to focus on that more than food. I focus on WOW only 20 more pounds and I get my first reward (NON FOOD REWARD), at 50lbs Im going to celebrate by treating myself to $200 at the dog track at 100lbs I have an out of town reward coming and so on. Like I said, food is just an after thought now (and it better stay that way). It's such a quick part of my day that I really dont have much time to focus on it. SO tell MVDB have you quit doing stuff that will make you hungry (if you know what I mean, there is no way this will work for you if you havent stopped and thats hard trust me). How are you doing on it, are you being strict on yourself or not. I am looking for a means to an end and I want to get there quickly but this diet is really teaching me about portion control and when I get to my goal weight 160lbs, I plan to keep the mentality and once I do obtain my goal, if I do start to gain weight again, I will be on the 5 bite rules faster than lightning. But I got a long way to go but I will get there.

Let's see what I haven't covered yet (I responded to your above post too). My mood has been pretty much what it was before I started dieting, except I think I am more positive and have more really genuinely happy, good moods. The reason for that is because I am losing the weight so quickly, I am feeling much better about myself. I'm proud of myself for doing this. I think I look better, and am more energetic than I was. And I feel like this diet works for me, and is going to be the one to get me where I'm going. I am feeling a bit more confident, but I have a lot more weight to lose before I think my confidence level rises higher.
I don't have to convince myself to only eat 5 bites. It's actually become kind of automatic. I think if I wanted to eat more than 5 bites, it would stress me out if I did. I am enjoying the new found feeling of being able to control what I am eating, and it's actually kind of exciting. When I'm done with my meal, I know when to stop, and then I actually stop eating and it gives me an instant sense of accomplishment. I feel like I'm getting somewhere, and then I see the results.
I do make sure I'm aware of my moods and try to pinpoint moments that could be weak for me. I've noticed when I need to get some sleep, I'm more hungry feeling. When I'm bored, angry, stressed, etc. those are definitely moments that I have to be aware of so I don't decide to eat. I think most of my overeating was done for emotional reasons, and this diet keeps me from doing that, as well as making me learn about myself and what was causing me to overeat.

I wanted to give an update on my weight loss this week. I lost 3.1 lbs. I am really thrilled about it and am continuing on my journey. I've lost a total of 30 lbs in one month. So, it sounds like we are even Big Daddy, LOL.
I'll be checking back in again soon to let everyone know my progress. Have a great New Year's!

5 Biter - you are doing fantastic at 30 pounds in one month! Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I'm having similar experiences with feeling more confident and a feeling of well being. I know what you mean about how good it feels to feel in control. And all of a sudden people are really noticing. Random people I run into like in the kitchen at work (people I didn't even think noticed me in the first place) will say, "You look fantastic, by the way!" I've also noticed feeling "hungry" late at night and have realized I am just actually really tired and need to go to bed -- I tend to fight going to bed early (like a little kid -- afraid I'll miss something!?). I did well over Thanksgiving and Christmas and am looking forward to losing even more weight in the New Year. I've lost about 45 pounds so far and have quite a bit left to lose, but I feel like this time I can do it.

Keep going everyone and good luck!

Hi, I'm going to start my 5 bite diet tomorrow. I've read the book...the only thing I'm thinking about changing is eating 3 meals instead of 2. Does anyone else do this? I am the mom to 2 girls ages 1 & 5, so I just love the idea of the diet not being time consuming. I am planning to exercise for 30 min. 3x per week. I am also a thyroid cancer survivor. I am committed to losing 60 lbs. In addition to 1 of my bites being protein, I plan to have 1 bite of veggie & 1 bite of fruit (at least).

Congratulations to everyone who has had success on this plan! Do you have any tips to share that have worked for you?

I've read in a couple other places where people have done three meals of five bites each a day, or they've only done the five bites 3 or 4 days of the week, and they still lost weight. When you do it that way, you just have to make sure that your bite size or your regular meal days are not oversized to compensate.

I've kind of started this diet in the last couple days (more than five bites a meal, but two meals that were smaller than normal) and I will be starting fully tomorrow not that I have meal sizes for it. I need to lose about 70 pounds to be in the middle of my ideal weight but I'm aiming for 80. Anybody know of a forum or something that is a support group for this? It's nice to know that I'm not alone.

Hi Alexandra - you can track your weight and join the forum on the 5BD website: www.theslimmingstation.com. It is $50 per year, which is really nothing (about $4.16/month) compared to other diet/weight loss forums. They also have live chats and other information.

Hi Cathi,

I too am a thyroid cancer survivor who has had a lot of trouble losing weight with conventional weight loss plans. They work the first week for a pound here and there but nothing to give me great hope until the five bite diet. I've done this for about a month and have gone from a size 16 to a size 12. I haven't weighed myself because the real test for me is getting into my smaller clothes. After day 3, the hunger pangs really do go away and you will realize that it's not hard. I wouldn't encourage a lot of Big Macs but the thing is if you are on the run...you could have a hamburger and diet coke. Good luck to you! I'd love to know how you are doing. If you need any help, I can offer what I've learned from my own experiences. I'm still doing the diet so we'll journey together.

Hope everyone had a good New Years and now its time for me to get down to business. I was very good through the whole holiday season and stuck to the 5 bite rule so now I just got to keep the course. To everyone involved, lets keep this board vibrant and moving, no need to waste $50 dollars to post, stay on this board and keep us motivated and updated. Well I will keep this short because this is really just a 1/2 week update since my weigh days will always coincide with the 1st day of the month. My weight did drop but nothing worth talking about, I lost 1.1lbs since Sunday, so I will be starting the year at 304lbs. This is great dropping 31lbs in a month. I have continued to walk 2 miles a day, I cut back a mile because I am a little confused about this muscle vs fat thing. If muscle weighs more, Im not looking to gain a lot muscle too. If anyone can set me straight on this, I'd appreciate it. Also drinking water, can you drink too much water and start stretching out your stomach because of it. Since the idea of 5 bites is to shrink your stomach, I do drink about 128oz of water a day, but Im not sure if this stretches my stomach out. Well everyone keep going, stay away from negative posts that tell you that you will die on this diet, I think I was heading toward death if I didn't start this diet. I will be back next Thursday to update you and (PLEASE LET ME BE UNDER 300lbs next week) and I do check these boards often so if you have anything to ask me, I do respond.

Hey Big Daddy--I started this diet the other day. 1.1 lbs in under a week is still pretty good, though not extraordinary by some of the numbers listed here already for this particular diet. If you exercise you will gain muscle, which will give you weight. But don't not exercise because of this--gaining muscle will help you with the long-run weight loss. If you're just walking/running, the weight gain caused by muscle is no where near as large as it would be if you were using weights (and, thinking back to the last time I was in a gym, the well-muscled people that weighed more were always doing weights, and the thinner people who maybe had some muscle were on the treadmills). According to one body building website, if you want to lose fat vs. gain muscle then you should be doing more cardio exercises over weights.

As for water stretching your stomach: considering you've already shrunken your stomach down, you'll know you've drunk too much when your stomach hurts, same as if you eat too much. But don't cut your water supply short unless you feel that it's been stretched out (and, because you're exercising, the water is going to be used up quickly anyway).

Thanks for the info. Yea I dont lift any weights, I just walk 2 miles a day. I drink all the water after I exercise, I consider water my new beer :-). Anyways thank for the help. Im trying to get my five 5 bites closer to size of a snickers bar this week to see if I can get the new year off to a big start, we will see Thursday

of course theres many ppl that are doing the diet, giving us great feedback, i literally check this everyday, and well i was wondering, what are some recipes yall use in order to keep it 5bites, i dont cook, so i make myself sandwiches, and well i dont want to only eat that. ido put lettuce ham or turkey, or like today i made an egg sandwich for the 10 bites today (2 sandwiches) i have this little kids thing that cuts the sandwhich into triangles (4) and it takes the edges of, so i took the edge and used it as a bite, and of course the little four triangles, but i was wondering about some of the foods you guys eat. i started this diet yesterday, i have officially laid of the weed =( another thing, do i only drink water? cuz it says only none calorie drinks, but i dont drink coffee. theres this one rip off of vitamin water at costco, and it says 0 calories but it has like 100% of some type of vitamins, do you guys know if i can drink that,

as far as exercise, i wanna exercise my legs, cuz as big ppl, we have strong legs and i dont want to lose that muscle. so i plan to do squats not with weights but just up and down motion. i can do about 100 (next day is a pain sore than a motha...) it would burn the most calories being that the leg muscles (quads) are the biggest muscles. umm of course i wanna get all six packed and have the gunz (biceps) cocked and loaded haha, so i plan to do that p90x thing once i fall into the right weight. this i can say it probably happen in 2010 but thats another story. but thats just a little about what im trying to do, big daddy knows a little about my situation. im sure many ppl read this, so i wanna no more about like i said, the dishes or the 5bite foods u guys make, and a little about future plans, after your ideal weight is reached. thank you for ur time =D

If you’re looking for some recipes, what I’d do is do a search for low calorie foods as well as filling foods, such as potatoes, fish, apples, oranges—even steak can be healthy and filling. I love stir-fry, so I am going to try my own version at home. What I’ll be doing is marinating small pieces of lean steak in soy sauce, and then fry it (in a really small amount of oil) with some snow peas, green onions, garlic, and ginger. If you’re following the diet strictly, then only make enough for five bites (some of this is for flavor, like the garlic and ginger—you only need shavings of those). If you love Asian, stir-fry is really adaptable.

I’ll list more recipes as I come up with them. There’s a nice chicken-ham-roll-sourcream dish (it’s my favorite dish) where one serving makes about five (kind of large) bites, but the recipe serves eight so I need to portion the ingredients for one person. Granted, the leftovers don’t taste half bad either as long as you have enough sauce with them.

As for future plans…I’ll admit that I’m not following the five bite diet exactly (as in five bites twice a day), as many of my meals either take naturally smaller bites/nibbles to consume and also because I like my caloric drinks (even if they’re healthy). What I *am* doing is eating small meals (pretty close to about 7-9 bites, now that I think about it) with carefully balanced calories. Even with not strictly following the five bite diet, though, I’ve cut my calorie consumption in half, and have lost two pounds in three days so far. To be honest—this diet of strictly five bites worries me a bit. It *is* like gastric bypass and the band and those surgeries and it works for the heavily overweight / obese (like me). But you *are* going into starvation mode, and getting out of that can be hell.

My plan for after this, when I reach my ideal weight, is to slowly increase my calories (because I am borderline starvation mode at this point) until I am eating enough to maintain my ideal weight (about 145 lbs). I don’t know what his book says about after the diet, but if you simply go back to normal habits you will balloon up again (it’s happened to me), so it will still be a lot of exercising and counting calories.

You also might want to check out the Smart Ones portioned meals, they are low in calories and they are small so you can usually eat one of those in 5 bites and check out some of the other pre-portioned meals. We do subway some and load that sub up with a bunch of veggies and usually a 6 inch sub will last me 2 meals, so your looking at $3 for 2 meals. I treat myself to fast food once or twice a week but I dont finish whole sandwiches anymore in the 5 bites. Also try TURKEY hot dogs, the white meat ballparks are 45 calories each and the other ones are a little over 100. Also try some Tuna packs (like bumble bee type) those are 150 calories. I would say some days I eat under 500 calories, some other days around 700 but mixing it up will help you big time so you dont get bored with sandwiches. And like Alexandria said once and a while I do eat steak, but buy small steaks and since youre buying smaller, might as well get the best and buy filet mignots :-) Hey good luck and its really going to help that you quit the smoke. Just look for foods that will give you the biggest bang for the least caloric buck.

I have read all of these comments none of you know what you are talking about or did you even read dr lewis book i doubt it, if you did you would know the first thing he says is due this under a doctors care and hes not saying stuff yourself with burrito size portions hes saying small normal bites a snicker bar is about 5 bites but he did not say eat a snikers bar you people need to get your facst right before ripping on someone i personally know dr.lewis talked with him several times what you guys are saying about him is false if you choked on food its your own fault for being stupid and not using commond sense. so if you didnt try it dont knock it

Dude have you not read any of page 3 and 1/2 page 2 or did you just read the first page, Not one person on page 3 has slammed this man, in fact I think he's got my thinking going in the right direction about portions. I stick to his 5 bite rule while sometimes its bigger than a snickers bar and sometimes not, but I got over a 30lb drop in one month so Im with this guy all the way. Im just not sure what you're talking about since no one on page 3 and 1/2 of page 2 has slammed the doctor in anyway. There were some morons on page 1 that did, so really how many post did you read. Dont come on here to harsh everyones praise of the diet regardless if we shelled out the $20 for his book or not, he made it very clear on TV, Multivitiam, 5 bites lunch and 5 bites dinner. SO is this your thinly veiled attack on us or is this attack on the first page of posts.

Actually, in that interview, Dr lewis did say that if his patients have a hard time with the 5 bites, he tells them to buy a bag of snickers and eat them for a few days.

Regarding recipes - Dr. Lewis says to just eat whatever you are craving at the moment but just 5 bites. And throw away the rest. This really helps me because on other diets I was always looking for the thing with the lowest points, calories, carbohydrates, fat (depending on what diet I was on at the moment) and this way is so freeing. But I find that I crave healthy foods and protein. On other diets I binged on my favorite foods after I gave up on the diet, so this is preferable to me since I'm not restricted -- only portion-wise. I've lost more on this diet than on any of the other gazillion diets I've been on (and in half the time) so I'm very jazzed!

Hi I heard about this diet on a tv program that Dr. Lewis was interviewed on. I started it yesterday after reading all your guys posts and great weight losses. I have 80lbs to lose and so far these past two days have not been hard. This diet makes a lot of sense. Our portions have gotten way out of control. Do I need to order the book? I have always ate healthy. Not a fast or processed food person, just too big of portions and not enough exercise as I get older. Wish me luck and I will be reading all your posts and posting often to keep motivated.

aiight...i hear alot of talk about starvation mode...what is that do, someone explain that to me plz

The way I look at it, I have enough fat on me that I could live for a year or more before the body hits starvation mode. Also that is what the doctor said on TV, if your obese the doctor said you could live for a long time without food. So I wouldnt let that hinder you. There will be these folks who want to slam every aspect of this diet for nutritional reasons but remember these are the same folks who have no weight to lose. Once I get down to my goal weight, I will incorporate different methods, but really I might just keep on this, I cant wait for tomorrow's weigh-in, I have a good feeling about it

Reply
Alexandra

Starvation mode is when you cut your calories to less than half of what you require. As an example: I need about 2300 calories per day to *maintain* my current weight. If I started consuming less than 1150 calories a day, my body would go into starvation mode. I would still be losing weight, but starvation mode really affects you when you try to balance out your diet back to normal.

There are two different things from what I've seen. As you lose weight, your new weight means you require less calories. If you go from eating less than half of what you need (starvation mode) to eating more than half of what you need, your body is going to cling to those calories *because* it has been in starvation mode, making it harder to lose weight. You will stall in your weight loss, or lose a lot slower than you have been.

The second thing is if you have consumed drastically less calories than half (say I cut it down to about 600 instead of 1150 calories) then you are going to have to very carefully increase your calorie intake over a period of time so that, once you've reached your goal weight, you don't balloon up again, for the same reasons I mentioned above--your body will cling to every extra calorie you consume. If I went from eating 600 calories to 1800 calories one day (which is what my goal weight requires to maintain), I'm going to gain a lot back because my body is starving for calories.

That's a long explanation, lol, but that's why I'm not following the 5 bite diet exactly when I don't have the book to guide me.

All I know is all the previous diets I've been on over the decades (counting calories, counting carbohydrates, Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, no carbohydrates, Diet Center, no fat, Metracal (anyone old enought to remember that?), Slimfast, etc. -when I stopped because I was so frustrated of the restrictions I ballooned back up and then some.

So I don't think it matters what you do or how many calories/carbohydrates/fat grams you consume or don't consume...the minute you start overeating again, you're going to gain weight. The sooner my mind wraps around that fact, the sooner I will never gain weight again. The one thing I never learned properly was portion control and being satisfied with less. This is the first diet to teach me that. I was always searching for the lowest calorie/points/carbohydate/fat food I could find to still load up on -- even if I didn't like it. Stupid. I can play all the games I want, but my body is smarter than I am.

I'm now trying to "fill myself up" with non-food items like being aware of what I'm doing and enjoying life more. It's a lot of work. It's all such a mind trip.

Great post Sally! I have tried every single diet as well and it doesn't matter if I took the weight off surely and slowly, or if I took it off rapidly. I still gained it back at the same rate of speed. In my personal experience, the way I took it off wasn't the problem. It was not learning to keep it off.

I agree about portion control. I think that is crucial to being successful in keeping it off after losing it. I never learned that either. I would also try to play those games of how to figure out how I can eat more instead of realizing I needed to eat less to maintain my hard work. I am pleased to be learning so much about how to be happy with less, when all I used to think about was more more more.

Food had gotten to a point where I don't think I was even enjoying it very much, I just kept trying to get full. Quantity was more important than quality. That is a very unsatisfying way to live. I'm much happier now that I am gaining control over the food. Meal by meal, I feel stronger and trust myself to do the right thing and not overeat.

I am starting to believe the saying "less is more". And I also am beginning to find a lot of enjoyment in non-food related aspects of life. I agree Sally, it definitely is a "mind trip".

5biter -thanks! It's so great to know someone else knows exactly what I am talking about. In years past I'd find myself wandering into the kitchen after dinner because "I wanted something." Then I'd find myself mindlessly eat dry cereal out of the box -- I'm not kidding! What's that about? That's certainly not real, genuine physical hunger. So I'm now trying to get out of my own way and stop this craziness.

Over Christmas I had about five different people stop in their tracks and take a double look at me and say, "Wow! You've really lost weight!" I don't talk about it -- I'm just trying to quietly keep my head down and do this and hope that I can be an inspiration to them when I explain what I'm doing. I thought I was doomed to be morbidly obese and matronly the rest of my life. How exciting to find that I don't have to be. I have a ways to go but am really excited about the journey. I don't lose huge amounts every week but very consistently week after week. But I also know that I will have to stay completely diligent this time and not mindlessly stuff my face. But now I aware of that's what I was doing before and that's half the battle.

I agree - everybody please keep posting because hearing your stories and challenges is very inspiring.

5 biter, portion control is the way to go. One of my friends is really tiny. She says she eats small amounts more than 3 times a day of what ever she wants. We will all go out to dinner and she will split a dinner with her husband. His weight is normal too. I'm finding on this diet while eating and really paying attention that after the five bites I am satisfied for a while instead of mindless eating and really feeling full. Especially if I eat some protein. I'm sure my stomach needs to shrink some more to feel satisfied for longer periods. It's only been a few days on this diet and I'm still hungry. My husband cooked some steaks tonight, I can't believe it will last me for 3 meals. Did you guys read Dr. Lewis's book? Is it worth ordering? Keep posting you guys are definetly motivating.

A milestone has been achieved and it will be the first of many. Everyone, pop open a cold glass of water or tea or anything without sugar and let's celebrate. You know you have a feeling when a good week of weight loss is happening and I have had that feeling all week. I have stayed very strict to the 5 bite rules and multivitamin everyday + I have added unsweetened fiber to my diet. This week though I have not been going full throttle on every bite but eating smaller bites and everyday my calorie count is between 400-600 a day. As of today, I am no longer in the 300lb'er club. I lost 9.3lbs with a bmi 44.64 and I weigh 294.5lbs. While I have a long way to go, I am very happy about the weight loss I have had on this diet. In 5 weeks I have lost 41 pounds and it is a great feeling. I have stayed on course with exercising by walking 2 miles a day and I drink 128oz of water a day. My next goal is the 275 pound mark and hopefully will hit that before the end of the month, but when I do, I do.

Portions are the key here and I believe that L and Sally have the idea, its a mind game and I too have been doing things that dont involve food, As I stated before, food is really an after thought for me now and it is such a quick part of my day that really, Im lucky if a meal last more than 7 minutes. While Alexandria has some good points (and Im not slamming here), she is not doing the 5 bite diet at all but rather just a reduced calorie diet. Which there is nothing wrong with, but I need a diet that will cause me to lose weight quickly, not 1 or 2 pounds a week. I have a long way to go and once I get there, I never intend on eating 1800 or 2200 calories every day to maintain that weight. Those calories from what I have read are too many calories anyways. I still have 135 pounds to lose to hit my goal weight and when I do, my plan is once a week to eat whatever I want and the rest of the week to stay around 900-1100 calories a day. Trust me, if I start gaining weight, then the one special day a week will be gone.

The one thing I really love about this diet is that I can eat anything I want, just not much of it and enough to satisfy my cravings. I love pizza and now one slice does the job as opposed to a whole large pizza. I have also really started noticing when I eat out, what people order and you can really tell the ones who are eating right and the ones that are not and trust me I must of made people cringe with all the food I used to order.

TO MVDB: Update us let us all know how you are doing. Remember THE GIG IS UP, once you get down to your goal weight, you never want to go back to your old eating habits or the maintaining your weight eating habits. Right now you are looking for a means to a end and you sound a lot like me that if its a very slow process than its not a process you want to do. Dont get thrown off pace with worrying about starvation because if you're like me they could probably put us on a deserted island for a year with no food and when they came to pick us up, we would probably still need another month on the island :-) Its just a joke I tell people about me, so I hope you dont take it wrong, because Im interesting in seeing you succeed on this because you are in the best years of your life. Anyways everyone lets keep these boards vibrant and updated and keep posting and let us know how everyone is doing. I will say Im very happy about the milestone I have hit and hope everyone is having great results.

I think i have saved at least 75 dollars because i no longer have the urge to eat chips and my favorite cheese cake{i use to eat 6 slices a day}. 2nd of, i went to buger-king yesterday i would usually get a double whopper with extra evything, a large fry and large coke, but back to the point i bought a cheeseburger and cut it in half took 5 bites of the half and i got extra full so you know, i was boo-koo happy and not to mention ive had so much energy i literally cleaned my whole
house in like 15 minutes. Congrats to everybody and i will be posting my first week results Saturday :]smile

Way to go Big Daddy!!! Awesome weight loss. I think this diet is great too. You can eat what your craving for. I was thinking the same thing about maintenance, also eating what ever one day a week(most likely a weekend day) The actual weight loss is easier then keeping it off. I've been there too many times.

LOL I FIND THIS DIET TO BE QUITE FUNNY...WHY? BECAUSE WHEN IM HUNGRY...I CANT WAIT TO EAT...LIKE IM COUNTING THE HOURS (NOT LITERALLY) BUT WHEN ITS TIME TO EAT, ITS LIKE HEAVEN. THE FOOD TASTES MUCH BETTER THAN IT DID BEFORE. AND BIG DADDY POINTED THAT OUT IN EARLIER POSTS ABOUT PIZZA (NOT TODAY BUT A WHILE BACK) AND ITS LIKE, WOW, FOOD TASTE GOOD! HAHA...YESTERDAY I BOUGHT A FOOT LONG SUBWAY SANWICH, I WAS THINKIN OF JUST GETTING A 6 INCH BUT I WAS LIKE NAH, ILL SAVE IT FOR TOMORROW. SO LONG STORY SHORT, I ATE IT IN LIKE 15-17 BITES (3MEALS) I WAS FULL! AS BEFORE ILL EAT A FOOTLONG AND COUPLE OF BITES OF MY BROTHERS SANDWICH, MY MOMS, AND SOMETIMES MY SISTERS...HAHA..IT GOT TO THE POINT WHERE I DIDNT ENJOY IT. NOW ITS HEAVEN. ANYWAYS IM GLAD TO HEAR EVERYBODY IS DOING GREAT!

Congrats Big Daddy on your mega-weight loss this week! You must be so jazzed to be

MVDB - I've noticed it too how much better the food tastes. It's like my sense of taste is heightened. But I also find myself wanting something really savory or spicy with a lot of flavor. I don't want to waste my 5 bites on something like a plain grilled cheese sandwich, soup or a cheeseburger. I want a Chipotle wrap or Indian food or something that really delights my taste buds!

MeMe - I've saved a lot of money on food and groceries, too!

L- I wonder how maintenance is going to be, too, and how I'll actually know how many additional bites I'll be able to have. I guess I will closely monitor myself and figure it out. And also I now have the knowledge and skills how to lose weight quickly and just nip it in the bud if I need to.

Wow, I'm so impressed and proud of everyone! It's so rewarding to start 2009 on a positive note. Glad to hear you are doing this MVDB, it does get easier. A lot of times when I keep thinking I'm hungry, I realize I am not hungry, but I'm bored, or tired, or worried, or stressed or whatever, but not really hungry! I just used to handle every emotion by eating.
I agree about the spicy food Sally, I liked spicy stuff before, but now I am really starting to want everything spicy! I use hot peppers and hot sauce more often, and my taste buds really seem to enjoy it, as well as just actually enjoying the taste of food itself even more. I guess when I was overeating, I never really had actual hunger, so I was not tasting anything.
So now for the weight loss, I have lost 38 lbs since Nov. 30. I don't think I could ask for the weight to come off any faster! This is the best diet I've ever tried. I can eat the things I want and I don't feel like I'm deprived. I just keep it to the 5 bites.
Keep up the good work everyone!

well first update, im happy! i lost 11 lbs first week! im not gonna lie, i fell off on sunday, i experienced fullness! i started the diet last friday and on sunday, my mom took me out to home town buffet (bad idea). it was for breakfast (9ish) food was awesome, i did eat slower, and i did find myself get full. i gott to full where it didnt feel good anymore, i had to take a nasty number 2 haha. i got home and i dropped that extra food lol, it was like diarreah haha no lie, i didnt eat till 6 at night (5bites only though) so yea. other than that i'm dooing good.

as for spicy foods, i'm mexican so its in my nature to eat hot stuff. i put hot sauce on everything! but this time around i feel like im tasting all the ingridients haha..crazy but true. i jsut ate a turkey sandwich wit lettuce cheese mayo mustard and habanero sauce (i mixed em) on honey wheat bread, nd let me tell you, i tasted every ingridient. i drank water, and i feel full! lol theres alot of temptations though. but i realized, that im only cheating myself. on old diets i would eat healthy or whatever, but then ill sneak around and eat chips or whatever, and be scared someone would see me, but i realized that, that only messed ME up, i was cheating myself.
i find it a lil harder for me, cuz i smoked weed, and well i liked smoking that too haha, so i had to give her up =( i actually smoked weed on this diet on wednesday but i did not eat! i did get the munchies, but i did not give in! =D so thats a good thing! um... keep the posts coming. everyone is doing good. this week, i want to start working on my legs, ima do squats, i might run for my cardio, or i might just do jumping jacks. but anwyayz thanks for all the suport and know that im supporting all of you as well!

Im with ya wll the way on the hot stuff, Love my habenero mustard, and my hot peppers. Ever use daves insanity sauce, its like battery acid. Also heard one time that hot sauces speed up metabolisms, but not sure. Hey congrats on your weight loss and keep it up. Stay away from the buffets.

If you stick to the five bite rule just for lunch and dinner, you will probably lose even more than you want by June. Good luck and stick with it, Ive lost over 40lbs in 5 weeks and check in Thursdays is when I update my weight loss for the week. Dont think Ill lose 9lbs this week as I was intent on being under 300lbs last week, so Im just cruising this week but staying on the 5 bite rule strict but I know my calorie content so far this week is a little up. But I eat my highest caloric stuff on Thursday and Fridays and maybe Sat lunch and then on Sat night thru weigh day I get back to low calories stuff, so who knows the week may surprise me. But just stick to the rules of the diet and you will lose that 60lbs in plenty of time.

Thats a big time loss for a week, Keep it up and keep us all updated. We are here to motivate each other and updates are what motivates me the most. Just think in a month, you could be up to 25 or 30lbs of weight loss. Good week for us all it sounds like
