The 5 Bite Diet

Not four and not six.
Apparently five is the perfect number of bites to take at your next meal. Dr Alwin Lewis's book Why Weight Around recommends the five bite approach to weight loss.
- Drink as much of anything as you want as long as it doesn't contain calories.
- Take 5 bites of any food at lunch.
- Take 5 bites of anything at dinner.
- Take one multi-vitamin every day.
- Get a bit of protein a day "on average".
Dr Lewis says that after three days on this diet you will no longer be hungry: "that then resets what you body sees as full". Once you have reached your weight you can go back to "eating normally" (and therefore gain all the weight back and then some).
The truly sad thing is (in this ad/news bite) that Mr Lewis appears to be serious. Do not be fooled. This is not a good way to manage weight and get healthy.
I have no doubt whatsoever that anyone would lose substantial amounts of weight eating just five bites at a meal (Lewis sets an expectation of 13 pounds per week in his book).
How about we check back a year or 5 later before calling it successful?
The site for the diet has the audacity to say "no more fad diets" and lists so many clichés that maybe this is satire after all and I have been fooled.
I though we were over these weird gimmicks?
aww thx haha :)
so im planning to start on the 23rd and going on until i reach 130 lbs.
i am 5'4 and a 151 lbs.
how long would it take to reach my goal?
haha any motivational stories?
Replybecause i have tried before and i ALWAYS failed..
anything would be helpful..
thank you!
I'm 5'4 as well.
i started at 152 pounds.
i lost 19 pounds in the first 3 weeks.
that was a few months back.
I was very strict with the 5 bites, but I did add my large cup of coffee with raw sugar and soymilk every morning . (I aint giving up coffee for no one!! hahahah)
Then the weight loss slowed down, but I managed to get to 118.
I have been "bad" over the summer and crept back up to my current weight of 124.
I wish to go to 116, only because I was 116 a few years back and I looked and felt great.
i had also got to 110 pounds a few years back after a heartache when I stopped eating for a while and I didnt look good, so i kinda know where I need to be . 116 for me was perfect!
I am trying hard to get back on track.....
but I know this works.
It's just a matter of sticking to it, and like any diet , that's the challenge.
it is worth it though.
And to be honest, I am stunned that after all the eating I did over the summer i have not put on more weight.
I think that after doing the 5 bite for a while, I did realize that I could skip a meal the day after I had "pigged out" (south of France, croissants, cheese....need I say more??)
So I would eat way too much one day, but then the next I could eat very little.
i knew I woudlnt die, since I had done the 5 bite diet....I knew I could go without food for hours.
Good luck to you! And everyone else!!
ReplyMy experience has been identical to Diet74.
I'm 5'4 and started 5 bites in June, at 150 lbs.
I lost 15 lbs then veered off track during the summer.
I only gained 3 lbs back, after a summertime (and part of autumn) of overeating.
I think that this diet changes your relationship with food. I learned the same lesson as Diet74, I wouldn't die (or even pass out!) if I skipped a meal or two.
This time around, I started 5 bites at 138 lbs. Last time I checked, I was at 133 lbs. I'll be a happy camper if I get to 120 lbs!
Good Luck!
ReplyLori
To all those posting above, I TOO am 5'4"! Funny!
I had an OK day on Tuesday, and a disastrous day yesterday, which started early and kept right on through to bedtime. Today was going well: I had about 11 bites and was done with supper, but then I kept adding more, and launched into a full-on binge!
The great thing about this diet is of course that every day you're on it, you're making progress, and you can jump back on the wagon as soon as you fall off. So I'll try again tomorrow! I've got lunch with a colleague, but I will do my best to keep my bites low!
Good luck everyone!
Replywell the reasons why we eat are definitely psychological....So each day can just be so different....
There are some days when I do the 5 bites perfectly, the next day I might "mess up" and in my head I have been bad and I will binge for the rest of the day....
I mean its so retarded but I have been done this my whole life somehow.
One day I will have my 5 bites for lunch, and then I will break down and have like a piece of toast or something , in the afternoon.I feel guilty as hell, and think "oh I've messed up today so I might as well just keep on eating!"
I mean honestly, when I think about it afterwards I feel so silly.
I "broke" my diet with a piece of toast or anything, and then I give up and binge for the rest of the day! So in hind sight, that piece of toast seems so small at the end of the day when I realize I've ended up eating everything in the fridge!!! LOL
anyways, i might deal with this pattern, depending on my moods and what is going on in my life.
But, at least with the 5 bite diet I seem to feel that each day is the opportunity to start again.
When I was doing let's say weight watchers, I felt if I messed up pone day, it would mess up the whole week and I pretty much binged he whole week.
The worst one I think was when I had signed up at the gym.....i would work out hard core for like 2 hours a day, and then I would eat so healthily and portion control......and then the dreadful day of "messing up " comes up.
And that was tough because I would end up bingeing and it was even more depressing cause i had worked out soooo hard and so much time that week....and then I killed it all with that extra muffin, or that "ever so bad chocolate bar"....so the binge would last long time.....
I am still messed up in the head as I like to say LOL
But , as weird as it sounds, the 5 bite diet helps me not "lose control" for as long as I did before.
Actually, I am still listening to those free weight loss podcasts which I mentioned in a previous post, and it was so interesting to listen to one about self correcting.
the woman would talk about "naturally slender people" and how without knowing it, most of them do what she calls "self correct"
Which is the complete opposite to what I have always done.
Which means that they will have let's say a large heavy meal one night, they are aware of it, and then the next day they might eat a lot less in order to "self correct" what they did the night before.
Or let's say they know they are going to go to their favorite restaurant one night, and they know there is yummy rich food that they wanna eat, they might eat very light that day, kinda saving for that meal.
And I have noticed a couple of people I know do that.
Anyways, I go on and on...sorry.
I just feel the 5 bite diet helped me, even though I am not cured, to deal with those dreadful moments, and I am convinced that is why I have not put on all that weight back on this time.
Without realizing it, i am somehow "self correcting" or whatever one might call it, each day that I do the 5 bite, even when "messing it up"
I'm just saying all this especially for the new people trying this diet and maybe thinking a few of us are not always on track, and we keep restarting.....
It actually still works somehow, and I have noticed that the ones here on this forum who have lost weight by following the diet , and then went off for a while, still have not put all the weight back on, which is what usually happens with other diet.
Replyit is really awesome the support you are giving everybody diet74!
also the rest of you, this is a really motivational comment board :)
i woke up this morning and completely ditched the whole diet plan when i saw the twix bar underneath my pillow..
i feel really stupid.
something i have realized is that i have this thing in my mind, a defect really, that says i HAVE to start diets either on mondays or saturdays.
and if i try to start it in the middle of the week i always have the excuse that its not a saturday, i can start on saturday..
and then i quit.
i know i can do it but its hard :(
im gonna try again tomorrow and its a saturday!
hahaha wish me luck :)
GOOD LUCK ALL OF YOU

Hi Everybody,
I has a slight "detour" today.
I don't want to dwell the the negative,I'll just report on what went right today.
I stepped on the scale, I'm down to 132 lbs. I've lost about 7 pounds in 9 days. That's very good news.
I also got in my 10,000 steps. And even though I got off course this afternoon, I'm back on plan tonight. In the past I would have said "The heck with this, I'll start again on Monday. Or "I'll start again Nov 1!" Not this time.
Back tomorrow with more good news.
ReplyLori

ReplySunday I was 207 and Tuesday I weighed myself and was 202.5 :) However, I planned on weighing myself this Sunday coming up and now I'm bloated with my period lol, so I will weigh myself but I know I'll be bloated and can't take it badly. So I'm hoping by next week I'll finally be under 200.
Keep it up guys! We can do this :)
ReplyMorning Everybody,
I'll be out of town for about a week or so. I'm bringing my company computer so I won't be able to access my personal stuff.
I'll check back when I get back home.
Have a terrific week!
ReplyLori
alright people!!!
it's monday, so anyone who like me have a "it's monday so let's start a diet" mentality, let's do this!!!LOL

150!! :-))
ReplyI cheated this weekend for three days...back on the wagon today...I grew a little bit and I'm 5'5" now! Yay! I was 5'4"1/2 for quite a while.
Replyoh cool, so on this doet not only can we lose weight, we can also gain height!!!!
Replyhahahahaha : )
I don't think I said this before but I'm actually 16...I really did grow...it would be nice to have a diet that made you taller however
ReplyYes, I could use a little height. I'm only 5'2. I used to say I was vertically challenged.
ReplyIt's been on again off again with me too. Made it down to 209. Don't know if I'll make 200 by Nov 1st or not but I am sure going to try.
Diet74, that bit about the piece of toast really struck home. When I cheat with a piece of toast or whatever, I don't mean to binge but it happens. If I can just avoid that first extra bite,well.... Sometimes I tell myself I can have the forbidden item but I have to wait 12 minutes. A lot of times the craving goes away. I read somewhere you should do 12 minutes not 5, not 10 but 12. And set a timer, don't estimate. I play these little games with myself all the time. I always start again the next morning. A first for me. I used to blow the whole week when I was on other diets. Then after a few setbacks I'd give up altogether and gain everything back
I think at 65, I'm the oldest in this group. I've been on tons of diets and spent lots of money. You name it, I've tried it.
This is the most restrictive (and the cheapest), and I've lost weight faster than ever before. I really feel this is going to be the one that helps me keep it off for good.
I've done a lot of group things and didn't do well. The support system here is the best ever. Thanks Guys!!!!
Hang in there everyone. 4 more days to go.
Oct 28
ReplyWeighed this morning and still weighted 209. I have been really strict today so I have great hopes for tomorrow. I'll check in again every day till Nov 1.
well, I am struggling and not struggling!!!
I am having a hard time sticking to the strict 5 bites, BUT, I am being conscious about every bite I put in my mouth.
So I'll have my usual coffee with sugar and soymilk in the morning, then I might have 10 or 12 bites for lunch, then 15 bites for dinner.
And as I would normally feel this is a failure, I am starting to realize that I am in control of my food intake , at least right now!!!
I have lost 3 pounds in the last 2 days, so I think that just reducing the amount of food is helping.
Maybe I will manage to comfortably get to the 5 bites twice a day.
In the meantime, this is avoiding me bingeing, even though there is a of of crap going on in my family at the moment, which is always a trigger.
We can do this, we can do this, we can do this!!!!!
Whatever works!
Replyim so glad to hear this version of the 5 bite diet can work =]
i dont want extremely fast weight loss and i want it to be, well how do i put it? i want it to be EASIER quite frankly :)
Oh im sorry to hear about your family problems... thats always a trigger for me too. I hope its nothing too serious.. YOU CAN DO IT THOUGH!
xoxo
oh and btw: how old are you?
Replythanks!!!
Replyyeah I can do it!! hahahaha
I am 34 by the way!
wonderful job guys!!!
this forum helps alot!!
hopefully i will start MY version of this diet tomorrow..
now my motivation is high again so woohoo!!
GOOD LUCK!
Replyxoxo
I began the five bite diet on Monday, October 26. I have tea with skim milk in the morning and maybe two or three cups throughout the day. Other than that I am sticking to the plan. As of today, Oct. 30, I am down 5.5 pounds. I hope Halloween doesn't do me in.
ReplyHi Everyone,
ReplyBeen out of town for a few days but I've been pretty good bite-wise. I'm like you diet74 and nomoretwinkies. I don't stick religiously to 5 bites but do very small portions, about 10 to 15 bites twice a day. I try to do 5 bites every other day, but it doesn't always happen. I have pretty much stopped my "grazing" at night. I try not to eat anything after dinner. If I start. I binge.
Here's my stats the last few days.
Oct 28.....209
Oct 29.....208
Oct 30.....208
Oct 31.....206
Nov 1......????
Unfortunately I won't make 200 by Nov 1, but I have a 50th anniversary party on Nov 15 so that's my new goal date. Anyone up for another session?
When I hit 199, it's a new outfit for me. Since late July when I found this site and read about the 5BD, I have lost 39 lbs. I'm a fair seamstress and have been taking my old clothes in but I'm about ready to splurge.
Have a great weekend everyone!!
39 pounds is FANTASTIC......
If you have , as you say, managed to stop eating after dinner, that in itself is a huge accomplishment.
That is still my big problem.
Because as you mentioned, a graze becomes a binge, and I think this is a problem for most people on this forum.
So congratulations!!!!
I love the updates, so keep posting!!! : )
ReplyThanks diet74.
ReplyYou and the rest of this forum have been my salvation and I owe a lot of my success to all of you. Congratulations on all your efforts.
I finished this morning, Nov 1 at 205 pounds. Yeah me.
Tomorrow I start again. Today.........Well lets not talk about that Sunday morning breakfast buffet. LOL. I should always avoid buffets.
I like doing this in blocks of time. I think I focus better when I think of weeks instead of months. Two weeks till Nov 15th.
Have a good week everyone!!
Alright then , november 15th is our new date.
i have a calendar on my computer and I write down my weight in it.
I also write down what I eat.
That way i can go back to see what worked and what didnt.
Anyways, I went back to the first time i lost weight doing the 5 bite.
And it's motivation.
I would suggest this to anyone who is not used to writing it down.
It helps to do so, only for those times when you are down.
You feel you can't do this...so then you can look back at your weight and food journal and see that you've done it before and you can do it again.
I'm lucky to have lost 32 pounds on this, but even if you have only managed to do this diet a couple of days in a row, or a week, or on and off, write it down.
that really might help. Especially food wise.
You might realize that 5 bites of something seems to work better than 5 of something else.
I will update my weight and food on here from time to time.
Today is MONDAY people!!!!
A new chance, a new opportunity ......and perhaps soon a new dress size!!!
Good luck everyone.
And have a good week!
Replywell I am stunned that I made it through day 1
I weighed myself this morning and I lost 1 pound.
Considering I have my last 8 pounds to lose, well, now 7, this is pretty good.
When I started this diet a few months back , I lost 4 pounds then 3 pounds, the first 2 days....
My first day didn't go without the usual migraine!
Everytime I do this, the first day os tough and I do get a migraine in the evening.
This is also why I do drink my coffee in the morning, which is not supposed to be allowed on this diet, otherwise I would get a migraine by lunchtime!
From past experience, I know that my body will get used to the small portions, and the migraines will stop.
I hope you guys are doing well!
ReplyI didn't know coffee wasn't allowed on this diet. That has been my breakfast, a cup or 2 of caffeinated black coffee in the morning. Then if I drink some later in the day I drink decaf. Does everyone try to avoid coffee? Maybe I would do better if I cut it out, but I really need that caffeine jolt in the morning. I have really cut down on diet soda. I know it's allowed but I'm tempted to nibble when I have a soda in front of me, so I try to drink only water. If I drink at least 8 glasses,it's easier to stick to 5 bites.
ReplyHi all. I tried this diet last Dec for 1 week & lost 6 pounds. It was so difficult to stick with though. I was extremely hungry & had headaches. I weigh even more this year! For Christmas we are going to Colorado & I want to lose as much as I can before then. I am 5' 7" & weigh 208. Any advice from those of you who have stuck with it & lost major weight?
ReplyThanks so much. I need to get healthy.
Hi Tamsher,
I find that it's easier when I adhere to all Dr Lewis's rules and don't start "tweaking".
For example, he says not to try and fix a 5 bite plate of food. It's too hard to figure out exactly what 5 bites will be, usually you end up cramming a bite or too. Instead, he says to fix a normal portion, eat 5 bites, and disgard the rest. I resisted this for a long time, I guess I didn't want to throw away food. But, when I did it, I found it to be exhilarating, seeing all the calories not being eaten.
Also, it's a heck of a lot easier to start...and then stay with it. I've been starting and stopping, it makes it much harder. I'm vowing to finish this time. Dr Lewis says that this is only a diet and not a way of life. I've been dragging this out for months, when I could have been done in June.
Oh well, lessons learned. I won't look back, only forward.
Good Luck,
ReplyLori
Thanks so much for the info. I am trying to make myself start soon.
ReplyI'm back in the saddle again!
I made a detour when I was out of town. The good news is that there is 3 weeks until Thanksgiving. If I stick to the plan, I'll be at goal weight by then.
Regarding coffee,Dr Lewis recommends drinking coffee for breakfast and also using it to cut your appetite during the day. I tend to have a couple cups in the morning, then switch to herbal tea at night.
Good luck everybody!
ReplyLori
Hi everybody!
Tamsher, coffee is perfectly fine. I am "cheating" with my coffee because I drink a big cup in the morning with 2 tsp of sugar and some soymilk.
But black coffee, unsweetened , as Lori said, is absolutely fine.
The basic 5 bite diet is 5 bites for lunch, 5 for dinner, and nothing else. Then you can have as many Calorie free drink during the day.
So that's where my cheating comes from!!!! LOL
If I don't drink my coffee in the morning, i will for sure have have a headache which will then turn to a migraine.
i am gonna start lowering my sugar , to eventually learn to drink my coffee black! But that will take time.
A few months back I did the 5 bite diet and lost 32 pounds.
I did drink my coffee in the morning, but I did stick to the 5 bites for lunch and dinner.
i have started again this past monday.
In 3 days I have lost 3 pounds.
I only have 8 to 10 to lose in total, so that's why my initial weight loss is less than when I first started months ago and had more tan 30 pounds to lose.
When I first started , I lost 19 pounds in the first 3 weeks, then it slowed down, but still was going down a bit every day....
I have always had my sweetened coffee with soymilk in the morning, but before starting the diet, i used to have 2 mugs. Now I only have 1.
Then during the day I drink lots of water, sometimes with lemon, and also lots of plain unsweetened herbal tea.
i find that peppermint herbal tea helps curb my appetite.
Lori, good for you for continuing with the diet even after a "detour' as you call it! LOL
Good luck for the next weeks leading to thanksgiving!
ReplyThanks for your input. It is so hard to only stick to 10 bites a day! I get mad that I can't eat more, then I binge & get mad at myself for not sticking to the plan! I feel like I self-sabotage a lot.
ReplyI will try again tomorrow.
well you are not alone here.
We all know about self sabotage.....we have all started this diet and "failed" once day and binge.
But honestly I used to do this with every diet.
If I was on weight watchers, and I went over my points one day or didnt count, I felt I failed and I binged. And on every other diet....
that cycle of starve and binge is very hard.
But, honestly, if you can get through the first 3 days, it does get easier.
And as many of us have experienced here, once you have been on this diet for a while and have lost some weight (I did it in one stretch and lost 32 pounds)
then you will find that you don't put on weight after this weight loss.
I still have some weight to lose, but in all honestly very little, which is quite hard.
If you go back a few posts on this thread, you will see how many of us feel that after losing weight on this diet, it does change the way you eat.
Now don't get me wrong, I am still perfectly capable of bingeing.
But I can also go without eating the day after a binge....
I don't binge and starve myself, that's not what I mean. I binge a lot less than I used to.
Anyways, if you read the past few ages on this thread, you will get a lot of motivation.
I have started the 5 bite again on monday, and I don't know why but this time it is a lot easier???? Go figure...
Sometimes you have to be in the right frame f mind and be really ready.
I have tried to "start" recently and it has nt worked.
Emotional things got in the way,or whatever???
You do have to be prepared, because the reality is that the first 3 to possibly 5 days are quite challenging.
As Dr Lewis said , you will feel like you have the flu.
I just feel really tired, and have the occasional headache.
But that's only the first few days.
You go from that, to having loads of energy.
Think of it as a detox, which really, it is.
Your body gets very little food, and lots of fluids!
On ay detox, you have flu symtoms because your body doesnt have to spend massive amounts of energy to digest food, so it takes care of cleansing other organs, which is why as toxins come out, you feel weakened...
but blah blah blah......LOL I could just keep going.
If you can, try and start this diet when you don't have to be super busy and can get a lot of rest, drink a lot of fluid....Just pretend you have the flu and take care of youself that way.
It does make it easier. Take it easy, and when it's difficult, remember that it will pass....
i have to run off ....Dont give up!
It really works!
Good luck!
ReplyBack later!!! : )
ok, ait , a bit more!!!
sice you are starting this diet, couple of tips:
what I do the first few days when it's hard is choose to eat 5 bites of something chewy, which I can eat very slowly and concentrate to chew slow and take my time.
Have one bite this way, then breathe, wait 30 seconds, and repeat with the next 4 bites.
Then , i try and drink a huge glass of water, or if cold, I drink a huge mug of herbal tea, and fill my tummy up.
Also eating protein helps ( and I'm a vegetarian!!!)
Then , making a conscious effort to drink a lot during the day helps a lot......
ok, bye bye : )
ReplyA bit of motivation!!!

and of course for newbies who haven't seen it yet, you can go to youtube and watch Dr Lewis talk about this diet. Just go to youtube.com and type in :
The Gregory Mantell Show -- The Five Bite Diet
Replyhey yall!!
im back and have yet tried ANOTHER diet..
the warrior diet..
and another tremendous failure it was =[
well thts ok!
back to the old diet plan eh?
Replyxoxo
hang in there !!! I have done the same.... I have lost 32 pounds with the 5 bite, and then stopped , didnt put on any weight, but got seduced by other diets!
They didnt work....
I just know that no matter how hard this one seems, it works , so well, and so fast.
So you do "suffer", but for less time. And you don't actually suffer for long......just the first few days!
As Dr Lewis says on the youtube video, it's not even about the number of bites.
He tells his clients that they can do 6 bites, or 12 bites....
So you can pick a number of bites, eat them slowly, and see how you feel.
just stick to a number of bites. You are automatically gonna reduce the amount of food and calories you consume.
then when you feel ready switch to 5 bites.
Some people on this thread have been doing 15 bites 3 times a day.
It's whatever works for you!
Once you stomach get used to much smaller portions, it will be easier to get to 5 bites!
In any case, good luck!
ReplyThanks so much for your advice. It sounds like you know where I am coming from. You name the diet & I have tried it & sabotaged myself doing it. I hate being this unhealthy & I hate not eating! I get so mad at myself for always messing up, but I also get mad because I can't eat what I want all day. I have lost friends over my weight because they invite me to do something & I make an excuse for not going. I even told my best friend that I was sick & couldn't attend her baby shower (I knew some people would be there that haven't seen me in a while). If I could only stick to this diet & get this weight off! Do you think it is easier to start with more bites & even eat breakfast or to just go for it & do ONLY 5 bites for lunch & five for dinner?
ReplyQuick update.
i started the 5 bite diet this past monday november 2nd.
On monday I weighed 123.2 pounds, and had 26.5 % fat
This morning saturday november 7th I weigh 119.2 pounds and have 25% fat.
I have also lost 1.5 inches around my waist.
So it's a slow and steady weight loss, considering I have about 5 more pounds to lose.
Replythank you for the advice :)
I have started the diet again on November 07 2009
WISH ME LUCK TO GET PAST DAY 1!
Replythank you
xoxoxo
YOU CAN DO IT
YOU CAN DO IT
YOU CAN DO IT!!!!! ; )
And if you "slip", try not to beat yourself up..I know it's hard, but try and be very mindful of your bites, even if you break down and go over 5, just slow down and be mindful of those extra bites.
You will probably still eat less than on a normal day, which means calorie deficit, and weight loss!!!!
Good luck!
ReplyI am 140 and I really want to lose about 20 pounds. I have tried so many different diets and none of them seem to work. I am thinking about starting this one. I don't like to cook and I also don't have time. I am a full time student and i also work part time. I don't know what i should eat for 5 bites. Should i make a sandwich every time or should i buy the slimfast meal bar?
ReplyOMG DIET74 I MADE IT PAST DAY 1!!
its all thanks to your advice on being mindful :)
thank you SO MUCH!!
ive got a huge confidence boost in this diet now..
xoxox
ReplyOh I'm so glad!!!! So happy for you!
I was mentioning the "mindfulness' thing because I experienced it.
There were some days when I just wanted to eat those 5 bites as quickly as I could, and then I realized that if I actually sat down and took things slowly , I kind of managed to disconnect with the part of me that wanted to shuv food down my throat.
So, just as some diets tell you to put your fork down every few bites to slow down, I decided to take a few breaths between each bite.
And I find that drinking a big glass of water after my last bite helps as well.
Or herbal tea.
So keep 5 biting and keep breathing!! hahaha
Good luck !
Replyaww i blundered..
Well its okay because now I can get RIGHT back on =]
Are you sure its okay if we have more than 5 bites?
because i want to lose at a slower pace but not THAT slow :)
And how much would i lose if i did 8 bites?
Thank you so much for your support diet74 you have no idea how much it has changed dieting for me =]
xoxox
ReplyOf course it's ok!
Dr Lewis says himself that this is a number he came up with to kind of "match" the amount of food a person might eat after a gastric surgery....
Even if you eat 5 bites 3 times a day, or 8 bites twice a day, you are still eating so much less than you normally do.
I do remember that in some older posts , one person had lost weight doing 5 bites 3 times a day.You are in control.
You should go onto youtube and type in :
The Gregory Mantell Show -- The Five Bite Diet
you will get the Dr himself talking about his diet.
He will mention that people can choose 6 or 12 bites if they want to.
It's always great motivation to watch that video.Honestly.
And I know this diet seems drastic, and it is challenging, but remember this is a temporary solution.
This is something to do to lose weight quickly.
Once you lost the weight, you go back to eating regular meals, but you will automatically be aware of portions.
I mention this because of course I believe that eating 3 small meals a day with grains, fruit and veggies is much "healthier" than doing the 5 bite.
The 5 bite is merely a way to lose the weight quickly.
I did go to weight watchers and lost about 1 to 2 pounds a week.
But I still found it challenging.
I prefer to "suffer" a while and get there quickly, and then get to the maintenance phase.
i lost 32 pounds with this, and even though I can still overeat, or binge , I still do not consume the amount of foods I did before losing the 32 pounds.
I stuck to it, and the motivation for me was the quick weight loss, and the fact that I weighed myself every morning.
To see the scale go down is the best motivation, and then also quickly you start to feel you clothes getting too loose!
Anyways, I did perfectly this past week, and then yesterday sunday I decided to eat a normal dinner.
This morning the scale did not budge.
I thought I would have gained weight, but I didn't.
But check out the you tube if you haven't already!
And once again good luck.
i'm glad I can help, as I'm sure everyone is on this forum!!!
: )
ReplyI agree. the Dr Lewis interview on the Gregory Mantell Show (you tube) is very powerful. Especially the part comparing the 5BD to the gastric bypass diet. This is what convinced me I could do this without ruining my health. I have this bookmarked and I replay it whenever the going gets rough, sometimes every few days. I call it my secret weapon.
ReplyAlso I used to eat a lot of salads. Now I find that 5 bites of sandwich, pizza, taco, even mac and cheese are more filling than salads, for me anyway. Was down to 203 this morning. I have been doing the calorie shifting, eating more every other day, but I think I have been overdoing it on my off days. Am trying to go strictly 5 bites for a while.
Even when I overdo it, I don't eat anywhere the food I used to. I can't imagine to bites that must have been. I get full a lot quicker now.
I also checked out your links to testimonials above. Anything to keep me on track. As I said before, everyone on this forum is so helpful.
Have a good week!!
weighed in today...141! yay!
ReplyYeah indeed!
Are you doing ok with this diet!
Any tips you wanna share?
ReplyGood going Alisa. Yes,any tips from you?
Replyoh i actually have seen that video, and it was the reason i started this diet.
I had never heard of this diet but i used to make up random diets to lose weight quickly, then google their effects.
I came up with the 3 bite diet :)
but i googled it and nothing came up.
so i went higher, and eventually got to five bites, and when im not dieting, this diet is ALWAYS at the back of my mind, because i took it as an omen that i found it..
When i watch the video, it doesn't really do anything except clear out what i have to do in the diet..
But thank you anyways guys :)
Replyxoxoxo
thank you for the compliments!
hmm...mostly all I do is try my best to follow the rules completely.
If I get hungry, I drink something carbonated
(usually Coke Zero or Diet Cherry Dr. Pepper).
I drink a vanilla latte with heavy cream in the morning--this fills me up.
If I feel the need to binge, I try to distract myself with something I enjoy--video games, writing, etc.
That's pretty much all the tips I have...
ReplyI started my work-out routine again today--I haven't worked out on this diet so far. I jog for 30 minutes using the Wii Fit. (I would like thinner legs...)
wow, now I am impressed!!!
You actually work out during the 5 bite!!!
I know some people do , and I used to have a neighbour who worked out like a maniac on this diet, but somehow I can't seem to find the energy...
But good for you!
ReplyI am normally physically active and have an attractive physique, but I was very lazy this fall and gained over 10 kg! I decided I wanted a change but I definitely did not want to slowly lose the weight over a period of a couple of months. So I decided to try the five-bite-diet which I heard about on the Gregory Mantell Show. I am not super-strict about it - I probably have a couple of extra bites each meal and sometimes I have something really small for breakfast to get my body going. But to compensate I go running for at least an hour a day. I've been on the diet for five days now and I've lost five kilos. Really happy about that - only have five more to go! After that I will start regularly exercising again like I normally do and not be lazy:)!!
ReplyHi Everybody,
OK, there is 2 weeks until Thanksgiving. My plan is to stick to 5 Bites until then.
I worked with my boss this week, I caved in and ate more during the meals we ate together. The good news is that I have no social obligations until Thanksgiving. I have no reason not to veer off course!
Lori
ReplyYeah I'm looking at thanksgiving as my next goal day too. I would like to strictly do 5 bites or even 10 twice a day but it doesn't seem to be happening. Since Nov 1, I only lost 2 pounds. Better than gaining I guess but I had hoped to lose more. I do exercise, an hour of light jazzercise three times a week. There a lot of health benefits in exercising but according to the latest studies, weight loss is not one of them. I do it because I enjoy it and it keeps me flexible and helps keep down my blood sugar. Plus I'm retired and I have time. The social part keeps me going to the class.
Now if I can just keep focused on the task at hand. I,m still struggling to get below 200. I suppose you guys are tired of hearing about that goal so often but it's so hard to get there. I have 3 more pounds to go. The last 10 pounds is harder than the first 30.
Have a great weekend everyone!!
ReplyHi everyone,
I can't seem to get past day 1 without giving in because of unbearable migraine headaches, anyone suffer the same or have any ideas on what I can do to stave them off??? I increased my water intake but still, massive headache by end of day one. Any suggestions would be appreciated as I want to try this again and lose fast before the holidays, thanks!!!!!
ReplyHi,
I know what you mean by migraines.
i am so very prone to them!
This must be the greatest challenge when doing this diet.
I know that if I stop drinking my coffee in the morning, I will have the worst migraine.
Which is why I "cheat" and will have my normal coffee with sugar and soymilk every morning, and then I will have 5 bites twice a day.
If it's any comfort, the migraines will not last the whole time you do the diet.
But the strict reduction in food is a bit of a shock to the body, and think of this diet as a detox if you will.
I don't know if you have ever done a detox, but when I do, I get migraines.
When you seriously reduce the amount of food you eat, your body doesnt have to spend all its energy on digestion and will start to cleanse some of your organs.
Now, if you were to detox, some of the side effects would be runny nose, headache, even pimples, because your body is cleansing its liver and kidneys, which will help get rid of toxins.
So anyways, for me, within a couple of days I will not get anymore migraines.
But the first couple of days are really hard.
Since I have gone on and off the diet, everytime I start on day 1 can be tough.
I usually start me day with my usual coffee, I do drink a lot of water, and herbal tea.
Then I will have my 5 bites for lunch and then 5 for dinner.
If I get any small sign of a migraine by any of these 2 meals, I will not wait and I will take an ibuprofen. That will stop a migraine before it develops.
I find ibuprofen to be the most successful of the pain relievers. You might have another.
The only thing with ibuprofen is that it is a non steroid anti inflammatory drug, which means it can be harsh on the stomach and should really only be taken with food.
So I do try to take it with either my lunch or dinner.
If I start having a headache (and headache for me always means it will turn to migraine) between meals, I will have an extra 2 or 3 bites in order to take the drug.
I have been to a migraine specialist in France, and apparently the biggest side effect of migraines is digestion troubles.
Basically, if you don't take a pain reliever straight away when you feel a headache coming on, and you wait, the stomach will have a hard time digesting it and the effect of the medicine will be lessened.
Which is why I also have some hard core specific migraine medicine for when it's too late and the migraine has already developed, and that medicine (called zomigoro) is a small pill you let dissolve in your mouth and goes straight to the blood stream , bypassing the digestive system.
So my advice would be to be very very aware of the slightest sign of a headache, and take care of it straight away.
I don't like to take medicine at all, and I am a total natural medicine girl.
If I have the flu, or a backache, or period pain, I will always use an alternative treatment, but when it comes to migraines, I give in to drugs, cause it is just too awful!
The other thing you can do is to modify the diet and eat a bit more than recommended.
You might find that eating a few bites throughout the day helps keep you blood sugar stable and prevent migraines.
You can have 5 bites 3 times a day, or 3 bites 5 times a day....
That's another option.
But I can tell you that your body will adjust to your new food intake and your migraines will go away. That , in the long run , will actually help your migraines.
You can also do an internet search on detox, or fasting for detox purposes, and see if any site has help regarding migraines. Because really the 5 bites to me is like a detox. You eat so little, you will get the benefits of a detox.
Anyways, those are just things that help me. But everyone is different, and maybe someone else here will have some other tips.
Either way, good luck!
ReplyI get migraine headaches from caffeine withdrawal. If you are used to ingesting caffeine from coffee, Coke or other caffeine rich sodas, or even chocolate. suddenly cutting them out cold turkey can produce a blinding throbbing migraine. Drinking coffee or diet Coke will help. I down two cup of black coffee in the morning and that seems to take care of it.
ReplyI also agree with Diet74, if you can tolerate ibuprofen that can be a big help. Thank goodness it only lasts a few days
thanks for the helpful hints. I think I will try to fit the 5BD to myself. I will have coffee in the morning along with 8 bites at lunch and 8 bites a dinner. If I find that's no problem with my headaches, I can always work my way down. I know people have said that have 10 and 10 and still lose fast, any opinions on that from you guys?
Lilliand, how much weight loss is that now? you have done fantastically along with Diet 74 and I'm sure a whole bunch more.
I plan on starting tomorrow and I am 5ft 4inches tall and 185lbs. My goal is 130lbs.
Good luck everyone, any insight to help me get started would be great! all the best

Hi hgoldens. Welcome to the forum. This really works if you stick to it. And if you slip up once in a while, that's OK, just jump right in again. I started at a size 26 at the end of July and I'm down to an 18. Feels great. After trying zillions of diets, losing and gaining it all back, I think this is the one that will help me keep it off for good.
ReplyAfter the first 3 days you don't really get hungry any more. And losing fast is a great incentive to keep on track.
Best of luck
Typo, make that lillian
