The 5 Bite Diet

Not four and not six.
Apparently five is the perfect number of bites to take at your next meal. Dr Alwin Lewis's book Why Weight Around recommends the five bite approach to weight loss.
- Drink as much of anything as you want as long as it doesn't contain calories.
- Take 5 bites of any food at lunch.
- Take 5 bites of anything at dinner.
- Take one multi-vitamin every day.
- Get a bit of protein a day "on average".
Dr Lewis says that after three days on this diet you will no longer be hungry: "that then resets what you body sees as full". Once you have reached your weight you can go back to "eating normally" (and therefore gain all the weight back and then some).
The truly sad thing is (in this ad/news bite) that Mr Lewis appears to be serious. Do not be fooled. This is not a good way to manage weight and get healthy.
I have no doubt whatsoever that anyone would lose substantial amounts of weight eating just five bites at a meal (Lewis sets an expectation of 13 pounds per week in his book).
How about we check back a year or 5 later before calling it successful?
The site for the diet has the audacity to say "no more fad diets" and lists so many clichés that maybe this is satire after all and I have been fooled.
I though we were over these weird gimmicks?
Hi Everyone,
ms m -welcome to the group. I know what you mean about thousands spent(wasted) trying to lose weight. I wouldn't mind the cost if it had worked,
Just wondering what everybody eats for their bites. I don't actually count bites. I eyeball what I think will be about 5 bites and put the rest away. Then I eat slowly and take small bites and chew it well to make it last longer. I like Subway subs, eat half of a 6 in lunch, half for dinner. I also like the frozen entrees like Lean Cuisine and Smart Ones. The trick is to thaw them and just heat half. If I heat the whole thing I might eat it all. I think they make portion control a little easier. I haven't actually resorted to the snickers bar for a meal like Dr Louis suggested.LOL On his website theslimmingstation.com
Replythere is a video of an interview of the Dr by Gregory Mantell. I highly recommend watching this video. It's very inspiring.
Have a great weekend all!
oh cool patty... youve lost alot of weight... i wish i could get past DAY 1!!! haha any tips from anyone?
ReplyChubbywubby (love that name) you're right, the first day, really the first 3 days, are the hardest. Try a no carb day. I think carbs are addictive. I've done a steak and shrimp day. This worked for me. I think we all have to find what is best for us. Some foods just make me pig out so I try to avoid them altogether. I know I can't stop at five bites. I tell myself "don't take that first bite" With these forbidden foods if I don't take the first bite, I wont take the 6th 10th or 50th bite. All I have to worry about is that first bite.
ReplyHang in there and good luck.
haha thx ( i thought of the name cuz ive been called tht a couple of time :p)... yea i know everyone always says you have to get past the 3 day hump, but i have never been able to... the reason i chose this diet was because ive LITERALLY tried every diet out there but cant seem to get past day 2 at the most... the sad thing is i started worrying abt my weight when i was a skinny seven year old but i saw this pic of 2 bikini models and thought why isnt MY body like tht... and then i just started eating more and more for some reason and now i just wanna get thin and stop worrying abt my weight, and this diet is supposed to keep the pounds off so i hope it works... i wanna live my teenage years without worry of weight loss :)
why did you choose THIS diet?
ReplyI chose this diet because, like you, I've tried everything else and nothing worked. This was billed as the gastric bypass without the surgery. I have several friends who had the surgery and lost over 100 lbs in less than a year. So why not just do the diet--no side effects of surgery.
ReplyHaven't been on for a while, but I'm back.
I've been binging, and falling off the bandwagon constantly, but Saturday was my birthday and I told myself the weekend was IT for eating like this. Last time I weighed myself, 2 weeks ago, I was 202. Now I'm 208, not good, but not bad at all.
Today is going back to the diet, and I know I can do it, and with all of your stories, they motivate me. Let's do this!
ReplyIt took me two days to get on the diet and stick to it. After that I know I ate more than five bites sometimes but I ended up loosing 7 pounds in three days. I was excited but then yesterday I had 2 BBQ's to go to so I went over the 5 bites but I did not pig out like usual, so that is an accomplishment. I am back on the diet today and the bag of chips sitting next to me is staring at me, but I am not going to touch it. I have also been excercising so I hope that is going to help. Weight to date 317 down to 310.
ReplyI weighed myself yesterday and I've only lost a pound this week...Maybe I've just hit a plateau or something...

I've been reading this blog for a while and have the book for a few months and have decided I need to just do it! My stats are 215 lbs, 49 yrs old (female) and pretty much post-menopausal so am well past my ability to lose 69 lbs in 4 months by weight training and such as I did after the birth of my 2 kids years ago! So I am planning to start later today, Wed, 9/16.
I am off to bed to get up for work in 6.5 hrs. Everyone is so very supportive and helpful on this blog. I love reading everyone's successes and determination to catch that wagon they just fell off of! There is no failure in falling off the wagon, the failure is lying there and NOT getting up and back on again! Even if it is over and over again. No one is perfect and we must expect lapses.
Replyugghhh i cant keep up with the diet! i seriously need to slap my brain or something to get it to REMEMBER HOW IMPORTANT THIS IS TO ME!!! im also making excuses all the time... really need a reality check.
ReplyWednesday is my weigh in day, I was 208 pounds...I'm now 203 :)
Just when I give up hope, I remember the 5BD works every single time. Only one pound away from my all time low. Getting ready for the gym now, so I'm hoping next week I can finally make it under 200 and see a 1!!
Good luck everyone! I love your posts
ReplySo I'm not the only one trying to get under 200 lbs. You're right, it would be great to see a 1 on the scale instead of a 2. I'm kind of stuck at 220. I think I need a jump Start. Maybe a day of fasting?
ReplyAt least I'm down from 245
Keep going, ready for change!
Reply20 sept 2009
ReplyGreat Job Readyforchange!
minus 5 pounds is brilliant!
Thank you so much and thank you alisa :) tomorrow is my weigh in day and I'm 202 (i weighed myself yesterday) and I feel like I will never get to 200 or even 199, but I refuse to let it get me down :) I've been hitting the gym, so it may be muscle not sure, but I haven't cheated. All of you give me inspiration and I can never thank you enough!
Good luck everyone! We can do it!

Oh my God, it is so tough the first few days!!!!
So tough!
especially after a weekend of piggin out!!!!
LOL
So I am drinking my body weight in herbal tea to help me "fill up" on something!
Instead of spending my day in the kitchen, I spend it in the bathroom!!!!
Whatever works, hey?
Replythx, Diet74! yeah, whatever works!

I have been reading these posts and this diet sounds
Replyamazing. Where did BigDaddy go?
Hi Everybody,
I have been reading these posts and have been quite
Replyamazed at the rate of weight loss. I need to lose
about 40 pounds. My starting weight is 160 , I
want to get down to 120. I am 5'5 female and very
small framed. My question is, I understand that the
more you need to lose, the quicker you probably lose
it. How much can you expect to lose with these
beginning stats? Also, I like the idea of the calorie
shifting ,maybe eating 10 bites one day alternating
with 15 the next. Anyway I think it takes great
disipline to do this, and you all should be proud of
yourselves.

ReplyWelcome to the forum, ceryn! I started on August 10 at 176, hoping to lose 40-45 pounds. I'm a 5'4"1/2 female.I lost 9 the first week. I'm down to 152 now. This diet should work just as well for you! Good luck!

Thank you so much Alisa,
I am going to start this tomorrow. I am hoping that
Replythis eating plan will help me to get my "mindless
eating" under control. I will post my results.
Sept. 25th 2009
Welcome Ceryn, and yes, please keep us posted on your progress!
We can always use motivation!
Good luck!
ReplyThanks Diet74! Well, so much for starting today! I
Replypretty much blew it. I will just start over tomorrow.
But, I did really think about how I eat and most of
the time I'm not even hungry. That being said, I will
try to stay more focused and get through the first day.
I appreciate all the support.
The first day is always the hardest, and it can stay quite hard for up to 3 days.
I had stopped the 5 bite diet while on holiday and I am having a really hard time getting back on it.....especially since I have also just stopped smoking....
Makes it so much harder.
But I do know from last time that it works. Ad I do know that , well in my case, after the first 3 very difficult days , it does get a lot easier.
You can't even believe that you used to eat so much.....
But like I said, 3 days!!! LOL
Gotta stay strong.
It also helps to start this diet when you know yo won have any social events coming up.
Especially that first week when it's harder to resist.
Good luck everyone!
Replyhey everyone,
im back from a one week break... ramadan is over... now i can get on the diet properly..
BUT im gonna have milk in the morning with herbal medicine in it and thats about the only modification...
GOOD LUCK staying on the diet ceryn!
ReplyLOTS OF LUV EVERYONE =]
thx, ceryn!...you'll love the fast weight loss...I guarantee it...
Reply9/28/09
Today was my weigh-in...150 lbs! Woo!
ReplyI'M BAACK,
ReplyAfter losing 25 lbs fast, I was stuck on 220 for a few weeks. So I decided to try the calorie shifting that some of you mentioned. On odd numbered days I'd eat the regular 5 bites for lunch and dinner. Then on even numbered days, it's about 15 bites (a hamburger maybe) and for dinner another 15 bites. I still don't eat anything after dinner. In the past few days, I've lost another 5 lbs. Whoopee!!!!!
Been gone a few days and missed all your posts. Tonight I enjoyed catching up. Keep up the good work everyone!!!
Way to go, Lillian!
ReplyLillian. Thats fantastic, you are doing great. I
Replyonly started this a couple of days ago, and I still
haven't been able to stick to the "rules". I'm do
fine with no breakfsst, and lunch is no problem, but
after dinner, I bomb out big time. still eating alot
less than I was. So..will try again tomorrow to stick with "only 5 bites.", nothing after dinner. Maybe I should go to bed after dinner!
Alisa .Congratulations! You are doing great.
ReplyHello ALL,

Welcome to the forum Jerri Marie, I started on the
diet a few days ago and also need support and
motivation. I do alright during the day but at night
I have been caving and end up eating something. Not
anything like before but still I'm not doing it by
the "10 bites a day rule". Usually its something like
a piece of fruit or a small piece of cheese but still I'm getting mad at myself. How long did you stay on
the diet last year and how much did you lose?
Ceryn
Replythx, ceryn!
ReplyThanks for the tip Lillian!
I have done the "calorie shifting' which is what you did, and I know it works.
but I do like your system of even and odd days!
Very cool.
I'll try it that way.
Hope everyone is ok!
ReplyWorked for me, this diet. He himself has been on it, and now, many years later, he is as healthy as a horse and as slim as he wants to be at 174 pounds. He gets the 5-bite amount from the amount that gastric bypass patients are able to eat, which is more like 3 bites. This man is a doctor, he explains everything in the book (including rebuttals to all of you anti-5-biters' accusations), and I would suggest you read the book before judging this diet.
Replyfinally made it past the first day..
Replysecond day now...
hopefully im gonna get past it too =]
Great !!! Hang in there!!!!
ReplyYou CAN do it!
saturday october 3rd 09.
How are you doing Chubbywubby?
I just started my day one yesterday. that was so so so tough.
I have spent a week eating a lot , so day one was pretty hard.
I modify the 5 bite diet by the fact that I still have my coffee with raw sugar and soymilk in the morning. (I used to drink 2 cups every morning but now I am down to 1)
Yesterday i stuck to my 5 bites, but then I was struggling last night while watching tv.
that is always the hardest time.
So I cup up 2 stalks of celery and chewed them slowly...I just needed something to "chew" as I was dying to eat .
that helped....
So this morning I weighed myself and I lost 3.2 pounds since yesterday.
So not bad for day 1.
Now I just have to be strong over the weekend and make it til day 4.
I know from the last time I did this that once I get past day 3, it gets much easier.....
I hope everyone is still doing ok....
Replythx diet74!
i didnt make it :(.
starting again tmr.
wish me luk!!
ReplyYou can SO do it.
I am starting day 3 today, and it is getting a bit easier. Especially since I weigh myself every morning and I just lost another 1.2 pounds.
It obviously helps the motivation.
Yesterday was really hard.
I had my coffee in the morning, then my 5 bites for lunch, but the evening was really tough. I cooked for my boyfriend and I , making fresh spaghetti and tomato sauce.
I sat down to eat and wanted to binge big time.
I had to stop and take a big breath, and think, ok, I am on the verge of breaking down and ruining everything.
So instead of pigging out like I normally would do, why dont I allow myself to have 10 bites.
Immediately I felt better cause I felt I was in control, instead of whatever it is that normally makes me binge.
I ended up eating 7 bites of the pasta , which i forced myslef to eat very slowly. Mind you they were very big bites! LOL
Then I had 2 bites of a mini chocolate muffin.
in the end I ended up eating 9 bites. Feeling in control.
And this morning the scale showed that I did the right thing.
Had I binged like I normally do, I would have eaten until I felt beyond full, and the scale would have showed weight gain, and my moral this morning would have been extremely low.
So chubbywubby, hopefully this helps in case you have trouble again.
But I do know how hard this is.
ReplyGood luck to you , and everyone else here!
Hello Ceryn thank you for the support :-) ....That means a lot to me!! Well let’s do it lets lose weight!!
Today is day 1 I weighed in yesterday at 155. So I’m feeling good so far I’ve eaten lunch I decided to eat a 100 cal pack so it’s easier on me versus eating in bites because I can’t just throw something away lol. 3 more hours before I eat my dinner ill eat a 90 cal special k bar. I was feeling a little weak earlier so I just laid back since I’m off today. I’m ready for the weight to come off so I’m very excited!!
Does anyone have any other ways to promote this weight loss I'd love it if you would share!
ReplyCeryn I lost around 10-15 pounds but i lost it so fast.. Since then Ive been on a off the diet.. But this time i dont want to stop until my goal is met. Going home next month to see family and friends i want to look very nice!!! Looking good is my motivation and after i get the weight off i have no problem working out~ :-))
ReplyI don't know if you guys already know about this , but if you don't I thought I would share what I just found .
If you have itunes, you can subscribe to this free podcast called "Inside out weight loss"
You go to the itunes store and you can download it free.
If you subscribe to it, it will download all new episodes automatically when they are available.
So far there are like 87 episodes.
I have just found it myself, and have just started at episode 1 called Prologue.
It is a great think to listen to in the car or like I do, while I go out for a walk.
It is really all about our behavior with food.
Pretty interesting so far.
You can also go to :
http://personallifemedia.com/podcasts/216-inside-out-weight-loss
I believe you can also listen to the episodes from that site.
Have a great week everyone!
