Skinny Songs

There are a lot of motivational tools out there for anyone trying to lose weight. It was only a matter of time before someone came out with a selection of "weight loss songs".

SkinnySongs is not workout music but instead uses "empowering lyrics that will inspire and encourage you to reach your goals..."

Admittedly the songs are professionally done, covering a range of genres (contemporary rock and pop etc). But seriously though... check these song titles out: Use it to Lose it, Incredible Shrinking Woman, Think I'll Go To Saks, I'm A Hottie Now.

About that last one - here is a sample of the lyrics:

I’m a hottie now! (gimme something sexy)
I’m a hottie now! (something that barely fits me)
worked on my body, and I’m a hottie now!

Now I adore the clothing store
No plus sizes anymore
I love’em ‘specially when they’re colorful and gaudy

So load me up with all the best
Put my figure to the test
Remember Mister, you’re dealin’ with a hottie!

Kudos to creator Heidi Roizen for coming up with an interesting idea - but don't be offended Heidi - I simply could not stop laughing as I was writing this post. Reminds of me of the segment Greatest Hits on Whose Line Is It Anyway? where they come up with song names.

You be the judge; sample the music here. Priced at $14.99.

Hm, I guess I can't knock it, but I can't imagine this being truly motivating.

Then, once upon a time I worked at Curves and I do bet every Curves in the nation will be playing this during their "circuit" soon!

I love the idea. Music has long been a source of mood alteration. Ms. Roizen is on the right track.

Giving your mind a new way to think while trying to lose weight, instead of allowing yourself to be done in by those ever present sabotaging thought, helps to create lasting habits.

If there are songs that you can sing to yourself while you are visualizing how much better you are going to look and feel while shopping for that next great outfit, you might find passing up that bread basket pretty easy.

The reason why dieting is so difficult to do and why people generally put the weight right back on when they stop dieting, is that they make dieting "painful". We tell ourselves that having to eat healthy is a punishment for what we have done to our bodies. When we cave to the cravings, we punish ourselves some more by eating a box of chocolates.

We should find joy and laughter in the healthy lifestyle process. Thank you, Ms. Rozien, for giving us some of that.

I really enjoyed reading this and the comments that followed... as the lyricist of the songs, of course, I have a biased opinion about them. I definitely recognize the music is not for everyone -- in fact it would be hard to write music that *would* appeal to everyone. I get comments that range from 'the lyrics are silly' to 'the lyrics are terrific, they spoke to me and are helping me change my life' . Anyway, for those folks who don't like them, I certainly understand, and for those who do, I hope they help you as they have helped me (I've lost over 30 pounds and am now a healthy size 8 -- not skinny by any means but skinny enough for me!) best wishes -- Heidi Roizen

It's kind of a cool idea, but I think I'd rather work out to, well, ACTUAL songs. There are plenty of songs that are motivating on their own...the theme from "Rocky", "Stronger" by Christina Aguilera, etc. I lost weight by exercising a lot and all the while that I was exercising, I was listening to a lot of motivating music. And none of it was ranting about plus sized clothes or anything. So, I kind of like the idea, but it has a sort of "Weird Al" feeling to it, lol.

Wow. At least it's original. I wish I'd thought of that idea ... well maybe not. If a simple song will keep someone motivated to lose weight, then man, why is heath and wellness projected to be the next billion dollar industry? You gotta give Heidi kudos for her creativity though.

I had an mid-life experience much like Heidi's...went from being a flabby 51-year-old size 12 (er, 14) to a buff 52-year-old size 8, simply by working out hard 4-5 hours a week (a combo of yoga, resistance training, and aerobics).

It's like magic. I went from being invisible to being someone men turn around and look at. My ankles and back don't hurt any more, I can buy Gap clothes right off the rack, and I'm full of energy. I totally identified with the songs...sure, they're a little over-the-top, but they really capture the feeling. And I bought one of Heidi's "Use it to lose it" shirts.

Exercise and sensible eating beat the misery of food-obsessed dieting!

That's one of the tracks on my current gym mix.

Some others:
"Rusty Cage" by Soundgarden
"Prayer" by Disturbed
"Wicked Garden" by Stone Temple Pilots
"Last Cup of Sorrow" and "As the Worm Turns" by Faith No More
"46 & 2" and "Parabola" by Tool
"New Skin" and "A Certain Shade of Green" by Incubus
"Immigrant Song" by Led Zeppelin
"Martyr (Suffer Bastard Mix)" by Fear Factory

I find the lyrics to these songs all quite motivational to me, as an aid in lifting heavy weights.

Well anything that helps people stay motivated in the gym. For myself, I listen to songs that help to feed my intensity, so I get the best of singer-songwriters that I like.

That's ridiculous! What's next? Why can't people just work out and attempt to eat right. People are beyond lazy.

It doesn't claim the music does any work for you; It merely attempts to give motivation for those hoping to stick to their hard work in this arena. I certainly am not motivated in such a way, but some are and I fail to see how laziness has anything to do with it.

Ahh showing more ignorance once again. 90% of the people in the gym are listening to their own music, including myself, and we're all getting fantastic workouts. So have a nice cup of STFU! Cheers!

I am sure he is talking about people who just buy this cd, don't go to the gym and expect to lose weight.

This just furthers the idea that women (and men) MUST be skinny to be a "hottie."

I am all for losing weight to feel better about oneself, or to get in better shape. But thin is not the only thing that is beautiful, and it is hurtful for society if we perpetuate this idea.

It's already far too prevalent in the media/film/television/etc. Must we continue to add it to music?

Motivation is so important in losing weight. These songs could be just the edge that helps someone lose weight.
