Figwee: Judging Calories By Portion Size

There are dozens and dozens of on-line diet trackers.

Most of them pretty much offer the same thing - find a food, select the quantity, and see how many calories you've taken in.

A new tracker - with the unusual name of Figwee - offers a few extras - and is worth a mention.

Figwee is a diet tracker with an extensive library of food images. Search for a food and instead of just text - you get a picture.

A few results from a search for "chicken"

Here's where things get special. Add the food into your diary, and you are able to visually select the appropriate portion size (by gram weight or by ounces). Push the slider up and more chicken appears on the plate.

The example below shows baked chicken breast in 3oz, 6oz, and 0oz portions. Apparently the database contains 25,000 photos!

An amazing idea - however - the trouble with many calorie counters is that many meals (both restaurant and home-cooked) contain a large array of different foods on the plate.

Note: Figwee is very much in beta test stage.

Hey this is pretty cool tool. And I am sure it would be even better if they make it so that you can put all sorts of different kinds of food on your plate and calculate...

anyways, I'm off to play with it, thanks a lot :)

I signed up for it, since it's free to beta testers. It's pretty cool, but you have to putz around with it a lot. I love the pictures though...that way, if you eat more than a serving of something, you can account for it.

Hmm... what is a beta tester? I'm not one I guess, whatever it is.

Looks really nice though.

A beta tester is someone that tests software before it is formally released. "Beta" software usually works, but still has some bugs in it that need to be discovered.

That's great that more ways are becoming available for dieters to keep track of their food intake.

I think that a LOT of dieters get burned out on dieting, because it becomes complicated with measuring food, etc. The easier the better I say.

Because of my own food allergies my food intake is rather simple, but it did take me a bit to come up with a workable exercise program. I don't use complicated exercise equipment nor do I do extended exercise routines.

I work out 10 minutes a day, every day. I have asthma so I had to come up with something that was workable. I use DVDs (Pilates and Belly Dancing) at home. I started on September 30, 2007 and I've lost over 9" and 29#.

The easier the better I say! Especially when it comes to modifying food intake and exercise.

It's in the diet industry's interests to make losing weight seem more complicated than it is. The more complex you perceive it to be, the more books you'll buy! The more trendy snack bars you'll eat!

In truth, losing weight is not that complicated. It just isn't. The question is, "How much discipline do you have?"

I'm 5'11" and I lost about 30 lbs this year. I went from 195lbs in April. By September, I was clocking in at 165lb (that is my current weight. I'm trying to put on some muscle now, so I expect that number to go up). Whenever I see a friend who hasn't seen me in a couple months, they always say, "Wow, you lost so much weight!"

How did I do it? I started running every morning. I replaced virtually all my drinks with water. I started eating better. And no, I don't mean that I eat carrot sticks and celery all the time. I have cereal with dried fruit in the morning. Lunch is usually a sandwich and salad. Dinner varies, but I often have chicken with veggies.

If you do that, it will be impossible to *not* lose weight. It just takes discipline. I had one of those "moments of truth" last spring when I could barely button my favorite pair of jeans. That really told me something needed to change. So I did it. Within a month I could already see results.

Losing weight is 95% discipline. That's all it is. If you spend more time reading about losing weight than actually doing it (i.e. exercising, cooking healthier), you are mis-using your time.

Oh, and in case someone asks: yes, I think counting calories is a valuable exercise...for about a month.

I counted calories for several weeks. I got a good sense of how many calories are in things. Once I got that intuition, I stopped. Now I can pretty much tell when I've had enough for the day.

It's an interesting idea - but I've found that the more 'tools' I try to use the more bogged down I get with details and the more I think about food - I get a bit obsessive. I think I'll stick to my basic food diary.

That is a rather cool site! Quite fun to play with :-) I tend to weigh my food at home, but I'm hopeless at judging portion sizes in restaurants -- this could really come in handy.

Does figwee show how much fiber is in a serving for points value? You know the program cal fat fiber = points.

That is pretty cool. Having help with food portions would be a great asset to my nutritional program.
