Five Great Gift Ideas for the Health-conscious
Whether that special someone on your Christmas list is a health nut, or aspiring to become healthier, here are some gift ideas that won’t break the bank.
- Heart Rate Monitor:
A great tool for anyone looking for information on their workout intensities. There are several types of monitors on the market from a simple heart rate only to ones that have GPS trackers, brew coffee and do your taxes. Base models are still well under $100 - Stability Ball:
Versatile and cheap – a staple for any home gym. Tip: Get a good durable, quality ball that will hold its air. You can also use it as an office chair - just don't be like “Dwight”. - Pedometer with PC Download:
One such model is the Oregon Scientific where users can program their target number of steps, distance or calories for training. PC download function allows for data transfer from pedometer to PC software - A Heavy bag combo set:
Everlast's 40-Lb Martial Arts Fitness set features a heavy bag, hand wraps, bag gloves, and a jump rope. A 70 pound kit is also available (if you think you can handle it). Rocky Soundtrack sold separately. - Adjustable Dumbbells:
Or not – you could also get sets of weights according to your needs and space constraints. The adjustable kinds where you don’t have to unscrew anything are easy to use and take up little space. They do push past the $100 mark once you get higher than 25lbs though.

Other ideas are; a healthy cook book, healthy cooking class, an exercise video, a 3 month gym pass, dance lessons (great for couples), boot camp workouts or a couple of sessions with a personal trainer. Also consider universally practical items such as; athletic wear, an iPod, exercise tubing or a mat.
A word of caution to the guys… be sure your significant other has expressed a desire for such items, lest she take your well-intentioned gesture the wrong way. Oh, and those scales with “motivational” sounds such as tug boats, elephants and the like… never a good idea.

Well, I already know a couple of my presents (because I helped pick them out) and they fit with this theme - a weight set and a mini-stepper, for those days when I can't (or don't want to) go to the gym. And maybe I can convince him to put a pedometer in my stocking.
He won't be in trouble, either, because I asked for them. But how do I give him the hint? A gym membership for him? LOL
ReplyHow about hand grippers? You can get some nice ones on ironmind.com These are quality hand grippers that go up to 350lbs.
ReplyI wish I could get some kettle bells or a Thomas Inch Dumbbell for Xmas.

Great ideas. I think it is great to have a bunch of workout stuff at home no matter what. If you do not feel like going to the gym or get really busy it is easy enough to have a fallover at home.
ReplyThat reminds me, I do with some chalk in my stocking.
ReplyThese days a lot of people are buying vouchers for "experiences": like a day spa, or personal training sessions at the gym.

Replyi would love a new hrm. i've told my mum that i'd like roller-blades, so i think that's what i'm getting.
ReplyHa, I already got my Christmas present...a new elliptical machine. It had to come early because the old one broke about a month ago. And since I picked it out, my husband knew it was exactly what I wanted. He said it was the easiest Christmas yet!
I'm getting my sister a postnatal workout DVD because she's having a baby at the end of January and she has expressed a lot of interest in getting her prebaby body back.
I think I'll probably end up asking for some new workout clothes from my parents (they never know what to get me). All mine are falling apart and the elastic's getting worn out.
ReplyI love this site - it's fantastic. I just starting blogging about my own fitness and diet attempts. I mentioned holiday weight gain and how to avoid some of that, but didn't think about encouraging people to ask for exercise equipment for Christmas - ingenious!!
Thanks,
Miss T
