Jennifer Love Hewitt vs Snarky Bloggers
Do you get all excited when you spot a dimple of cellulite on a actresses body? Do you go all giddy when celebrity x gains 0.34 of an inch on their thighs?
Of course not. You're not that petty are you?
Thousands of others, however, get off on criticizing everyone else's body.
Actress Jennifer Love Hewitt is one of the few to respond to the critics, and her response is worth a read.
Hewitt was criticized for daring to wear a bikini and not look like a size zero. TMZ.com posted a paparazzi photo on their site. Many blog reactions followed, with comments like "We know what you ate this summer, Love–everything!"
Here is Hewitt's measured and sane response on her own site:
I've sat by in silence for a long time now about the way women's bodies are constantly scrutinized. To set the record straight, I'm not upset for me, but for all of the girls out there that are struggling with their body image.A size 2 is not fat! Nor will it ever be. And being a size 0 doesn't make you beautiful.
What I should be doing is celebrating some of the best days of my life and my engagement to the man of my dreams, instead of having to deal with photographers taking invasive pictures from bad angles. I know what I look like, and so do my friends and family. And like all women out there should, I love my body.
To all girls with butts, boobs, hips and a waist, put on a bikini -- put it on and stay strong.
Ah, what an awesome response from her!
ReplyOK, I never thought much of her either way, but now I just love the girl! Go, girl, go!
ReplyI do get excited when actresses get bigger. It's those actresses who are helping set the size zero ideal in the first place. When even they -- with their trainers, chefs, plastic surgeons, and spas -- can't maintain the impossible ideal, it's very reassuring.
ReplyNot to mention her message of size acceptance was completely undercut by her thinly veiled attempt to climb back onto the thin pedestal.
If she really loved her body, she wouldn't have to lie about it. Great role model there.
ReplyTHANK YOU!! I've been a size 1-2 for a while and still i get passed over for a taller bean pole, since when did having hips become a fashion faux pas? ya know, back in the day, they appreciated a rounder figure. All i have to say is thanks to j-love because she truly said it all for those of us without a voice to say "hey, its my body, back off"
ReplyI'm sorry, but looking at those pictures... she is not a size 2.
Replythat's great and all...but she's not a size 2 and it wasn't mere bad angles that made her look like that in the photos. i'm all for advocating body acceptance, but i find it annoying when celebrities (and people in general) put a spin on what they say to make themselves look better. if she had omitted the clothing size reference and said "yea i have some extra padding and i'm proud of it!" i wouldn't be so irked by it.
ReplyI don't care what size she is...but I love the message. I'm so sick of people saying "That gal is too big for a bikini," or "Honey, cover up that fat!" Give me a break! People should wear what they want to wear, and if someone doesn't like it, that person can look away. You're 300 pounds and you want to wear a Speedo? Go for it! You're 400 pounds and you want to wear a sheath dress? None of anyone's business!
It makes me mad when people target fat people in a derogatory way and then use 'health insurance costs' or whatever as an excuse. If you want to have a rational dialog about the state of the U.S.'s health care system, that's one thing. If you want to use health as a thinly veiled excuse to insult the hurfdurf fatties, you are a bigot.
Full disclosure: I'm on the lower side of the BMI scale and some people think that disqualifies me from being a part of the size acceptance movement. Oh well.
ReplyI am a 20 year old women and people are making it harder to live. Most of all the stars. They say that big is beautiful but what they classify as big is a size 9 or 10. News flash that is not the case. There are girls out there that are bigger and they are beautiful. Yet you see a star finally say that being big is not bad then you see them and they are a size 2 or 4. That is great I have nothing against people that are small but don't try to say that you know what we go through cause you don't. I love my body and I think that all girls big or small should. I don't agree though with the fact that the magazines call people like Love Fat. That is so wrong and then they wonder why Hollywood is filled with stars that are too skinny of sick all the time or even die from this. They need to Shut up and realize that people come in all sizes and they are beautiful no matter what. So to the people that don't like the fatties I think I speak for a lot of them when I say kiss My Fat A**. To all the girls in Hollywood you are beautiful no matter what just think the people that are behind the lens are there for a reason so who are they to call people names. To all girls show the world what you got and if they don't like it then can look the other way. Don't ever think that you are not good enough.
ReplyMan, I think she looks fine - I wish I looked that good! Well, as the size 2 stuff - that's only because they dropped dress sizes so much - my friend who wore a size 8 in high school is now wearing a 4 - and not because she's smaller than she was then! Women's sizes are completely arbitrary - don't buy into them! (Yay that means I can wear an 8 now! Wooo Hooooo!) Since when is "cellulite" a problem? The minute you squish leg skin it gets "lumpy" no matter how skinny you are! I am not a cartoon character!
ReplyLets say you are a size 2 a couple of years ago that same item was a size 4.
Ladies won't buy clothes when they know they are fat so they make clothes bigger at the same small size.
So a size 2 is fat now.
ReplyI definitely don't relish in other people being humiliated. But I have to admit it is nice sometimes to see real pictures of celebrities that aren't airbrushed. The snotty commentary though, I could do without.
ReplyKudos for her for turning unflattering photos into some great PR, but are we really supposed to be excited that she stuck up for SIZE 2 girls everywhere? Wow, what a rebel!
ReplyJennifer. Thank you for responding to this horrible abuse of criticism! I have struggled and continue to struggle with my body image. I was a binge-purger as a teen. It took me eight years to stop. It was pure hell (both the hell of doing it and what it took to stop). I still struggle with food issues, especially each time I walk through the kitchen. It is like an alcoholic that walks into a bar and is tempted each time. Of course, for me, my temptation is to eat. But it doesn't stop there because with a food addiction, I can't just stop eating like an alcoholic can stop drinking. I have teenagers. I do have concerns that because of my own body image and the entertainment world that they will have their own issues. Once again, thank you for standing up and saying something! God Bless You!!!
ReplyYou GO Jennifer! Wow..stand proud. I am a woman with the curse of cellulite and to have someone take a picture of that and paste it for all the world to see....well, I have, for my weight loss progress pictures. Being a Personal Trainer, and working my butt off literally to try and reduce the cellulite, I know that sometimes, all we do will not totally get rid of the ugly bump appearance, but as long as I look at myself and tell myself that I am beautiful inside AND out, I know everyone else with think that too...sorry..just my .02.
ReplyFirst off, I gotta say that I don't really believe JLH is sticking up for anyone but herself. But, that's cool. She has a right to speak up for herself.
I will note that she got famous cause she was a cute, thin, little girl-next-door with the fresh face and the teeny tiny waste. Her talent is, well, hardly outstanding. She's just okay, acting-wise. So, she had to rely on being shapely and cute to make it. She allowed herself to be judged that way in order to make her fortune. I find it a bit hollow to complain now that she's being judged for looks. Her career is ALL about looks.
As far as the judging and harassing: I don't like it. It simply encourages more eating disorders. It irks me no end that female worth comes down to the exterior, while male actors can be wrinkly, fat and old and be leads and romantic interests. The double standard makes me wanna scream.
While I figure JLH will be dieting and training like mad and soon show off a size 0 in a bikini (come on, you know she will), I think the idea that she's somehow monstrous is insane. She has a normal butt for a no longer teenybopper. It's not a toned to the max butt, but it's normal. It's not the size of a barn. She's not obese. I'll take that butt over mine, any day.
And yet, we think she's a freak and think we can heap abuse at her for not being in the gym 4 hours a day and eating 800 calories a day. How insane is that?
We iz nuts.
The Princess
ReplyThis is ridiculous. By ANY measure, JLH has a fat flabby ass. It doesn't devalue her worth as a human being...but let's be honest here. Her job was to look cute and say things that smarter people wrote for her. She could only ever do one of those things well, and now she's gone and made that a problem. People noticed. Boo hoo.
Size 2 my own fat, flabby ass...that lie should be what is pissing people off. Now every girl with an ass like that which doesn't fit in a size two will wonder why JLH can do it and they can't.
ReplyJennifer Love who?
Eh... I have better things in my life to concern myself with then someone a continent away in an ivory tower.
ReplyCelebs are under a microscope, that's just how it is. She needs to accept that.
ReplyI think she looks better than she did before. Is it just me or can the standard of beauty nowadays be described as "built like a twelve year old boy"? Stick-thin is just as,if not more unattractive than morbidly obese.
But that's just my opinion.
ReplyI agree with you. She now looks like a woman in her late 20s. She is not gonna have the body she had at 15 anymore - she got curvier. Not fatter, but curvier. She is still in shape and not overfat by any measure.
ReplyI was checking out her ass on her TV show recently and thought she finally grew up! She has the body of a grown woman and it's nice. I remember, back in the day, when she was just only boobs and everyone speculated that they were fake. For years she had to keep saying over and over and over again they were real!
Leave the girl alone. She has a real hourglass figure. Let her and her man enjoy it!
BTW everyone used to label Nicole Ritchie fat and see what happened to her. She lost all that weight down to 85lbs! Then you all complained she was too skinny. You are watching her eat now that she's pregnant and will complain again if she doesn't lose her baby weight 2 days after giving birth!
When will the madness end?
ReplyWell said.
However, I think she looks more than just a mere size 2... probably 10 or above.
CY
ReplyShe is not a lot taller than me and I'm a 4/6, and a lot bigger than her, both in the bottom part and top. So I believe she is a size 2. This is girl is tiny all over except for a bit around the hips.
I think she is around 5'4" or 5'5", not a tall girl by any means.
Replyi used to love celeb blogs and mags. i was honestly never one for criticising their bodies (rather the stupid things they did like dui and to find out who's dating who etc) but i did like to look at the papprazzi shots and raised an eyebrow occasionally nevertheless if a celeb went to either extreme. the "10 celebs who have terrible bodies" etc features in magazines didn't even bother me although i knew they were screwed up.
but then recently, i got what used to be my favourite gossip magazine and it's like something in my mind just "clicked". i was totally disgusted with how negative the magazine was and how degrading it was not only to the celebrities but to women also. they had a picture of lindsey lohan with the caption "chunky thighs" underneath. this girl looks no bigger than 115lbs and as far as i'm aware she's around 5' 4" so by standard charts and even just looking at the girl, you can see she is of normal weight. whatsmore, not long ago she was extremely thin and this same magazine was claiming that she needed to gain weight and had an ed. now she's at a good weight for her yet she now has chunky thighs. wtf??
the thing that bothered me is that there will be girls all over the world who look the same size or even a little bigger than her and will believe their thighs are "chunky" too when in fact, they are normal. i was going to pick up that magazine again but i remembered the overwhelming negativity and just left it alone.
btw, the front page of the magazine read: "celebs who hate their bodies," last week. why this stuff never appalled me before, i'm not quite sure. i think it's possible that we become immune to all this at some point. my generation (i'm 19) is so used to being bombarded with these messages and celebs being everywhere. i've been on gossip blogs with girls stating some rather thin celebrity is flabby. or even curvaeous celebs are "obsese" and "gross". i knew they were wrong but it's not until i took a break from celeb blogs did i finally realised on how big of a scale their mindsets were warped.
as well than the fashion industry supposedly making women insecure about their weight/bodies, celeb culture is probably another notable factor contributing factor in that.
Replybtw, paparazzi photos are being photoshopped. i know some people are still extremely naive and think that because this is supposed to be a "candid" photo that they do not retouch it. they do. there was a pap picture of kate hudson running on the beach with a really wrinkly stomach. another photo taken on the same day, doing the same thing, shows a flat stomach. this corresponds with other photos of her with a flat stomach. what many people thought was an unretouched paparazzi photo had been edited to make her look bad.
likewise, there was a picture of victoria beckham stepping on something and her thighs were extremely wrinkled, had a lot of cellulite and just looked so bad it was unreal. well, it was unreal. the unretouced paparazzi shots show her without any of the gunk on her leg (aside from an odd dent most likely cus she's so skinny). yet guess which photo was shown all over celeb blogs and even printed in magazines? the retouched paparazzi photos.
my point is, in order to sell photos paparazzi agencies are now retouching their photos. i study web/graphic design and use photoshop, day in and day out, there is practically no limit to what you can do in there if you have the skills. in fact, i've even gotten rid of that "pregnancy pouch" on one celebrity to give her a flat stomach and smaller thighs as a demonstration to a friend. no-one would even know i had edited the pic in that way until you showed them the originals.
i've seen people totally change the face-shape of bruce willis's daughter rumer (she has a large jaw/long face)and it looks natural.
people are still buying into the candid photos = unretouched myth. pappazzi and gossip mags have changed and people need to wise up to the game.
kate hudson pics: fake and real i couldn't find the exact same set of photos as the first but it still proves my point anyway.

I love it. You said that very well. Thank you.
Replyok so she is not a size 2. lots of women lie about their ages and weights no big deal. does that make a size 4 or for that matter a size 10 fat? i think most of those teeny sizes look pretty unhealthy. i remember when jlh was bashed for being way too thin now at a couple sizes larger shes too fat. what exactly is the perfect size or weight to make EVERYONE happy?
ReplyA lot women hate other women. Some of the comments here is just what she was talking about. You are a hater if you relish in bad stuff happening to other people. You need to for others to feel bad about themselves in other for you to feel good about yourself. That's sad. Even if they are downsizing clothing sizes for women they haven't downsized enough where a size 2 or 4 or 6 for that matter means someone is fat.
That's completely messed up. Can't a women ever be judged solely on what she does or doesn't DO, why we always have to comment about their bodies? Oh yeah, because a lot of us hate our own.
Way to stick up for yourself Jen.
ReplyI doubt it. She might not be a size 2, but I fit from 10 to 12... and she looks thinner than me. More pear shaped, but even still thinner. I'd guess a 6 or MAYBE 8.
NOT THAT IT MATTERS.
Her size does not matter. Did you read her response? The heart isn't, "size two is okay" -- it's that women should not hate their bodies and it's not okay to heap criticism on their bodies.
Why to rejoice on harping on a woman's looks? It's disgusting, pathetic-- and I hope those doing it -- especially right here-- are ASHAMED of themselves.
ReplyCellulite is not fat. It is skin with poor blood circulation. Calling a woman as attactive as JLH is fat doing violence to women everywhere. Fat and thin. We can't victimize everyone about their weight but we do. America is crazy with the right image mold. Especially a mold for women. Women are wonderfully diverse and should cherished for their diversity. Not in America. We homogenize everything from food to body image in our consumer society. I hate it when people who know nothing about health matters beat people up over something they don't understand.
Reply"Cellulite" describes dimpling of skin, caused by the protrusion of subcutaneous fat into the dermis. Areas without "cellulite" are not really any different except the subcutaneus fat stays subcutaneus, and the skin appears smooth.
Reply1.No way is she a size 2.
2.She looks good in a differnt way than a size 2 does..but she should be honest and say "I'm a bit heavier, but my fiance and I like me this way.
3.MOST of us will work 40 hours a week for $20-60,000/yr...the millions that she's gotten paid mean that a little more is expected of her (unless she wants to go from ingenue to character actress.
4. So..she can be happy about having a fat hiney; but she shouldn't tell the rest of us that what we see isn't really there.
Me thinks she doth protest too much.
ReplyI think it's great that Jennifer Love Hewitt responded back. Jennifer had a great response loved it. If people actually think of it, the media and press are responsible for the eating disorders that we see in women and men and especially young girls growing up today. Jennifer Love Hewitt is by no means fat. She is a very beautiful woman the size she is. Who says a size zero is beautiful, the media? I think it was a great response back that she made and hope that many young girls look up to celebrities like Jennifer. Be happy with who you are, if you think your beautiful then you are. Wonder why there are eating disorders like bulimia out there today affecting young girls scared to eat. Thats what they see when they are growing up how mean people can be towards people overweight or in this circumstance with Jennifer was just plain business. But these comments made by these people don't really know how its affecting teens throughout the world.
I'm glad Jennifer Love Hewitt made a response back to get her point accross. I wish more celebrities would do the same.
ReplyI think it's disgusting how negative the media can be about celebs. Maybe the problem is that celebrity's have been portrayed as kind of "superhuman" over the years, and when we see pictures of them looking less than glamorous, we rejoice!
I have mixed feelings - on the one hand I hate that they disgrace another human being in this way, but I also want our children and young people to realize that "hey, no-one's perfect!"
I'm totally glad that Jennifer has stood up for herself though.
ReplyI respect her for that. She really is beautiful, does not need to lose weight, and those sort of comments show she also has a great head on her shoulders.
ReplyGreat post!Me glad Jennifer Love Hewitt made a response back to get her point across.
ReplyWell, sure, a person can even be skinny and fat at the same time! We call that "skinny-fat", and its what happens when one doesn't do their exercise.
JLH should seriously look into lunges and deadlifts.
In fact, after seeing this picture and its criticism, she probably will.
ReplyI totally agree with what she's saying. Why is it anyone else's business (especially the government's) who is fat and who isn't? I like to be skinny, so i workout and diet. But my cousin is overweight, and totally happy with it. Now, why should the media, or sadly, our GOVERNMENT, be telling us that being fat is not ok? Does it affect you if someone is 20 pounds overweight? It's so stupid and I hope everyone settles down with their ridiculous "obesity epidemic".
ReplyStill people are sitting here saying how "fat" she is! Wow! She just looks like a normal healthy young woman! What is with the huge or fat butt comments? We are supposed to have nice round hineys thank you! Look at Marilyn Monroe, Sophia Loren, even Betty Page - they didn't do crunches and lunges - and they were (and Sophia still is!) gorgeous women! why are we trying to turn women into men? Women shouldn't be "cut" or flat or "cellulite" free - and BTW cellulite was made up by the cosmetics industry to freak women out into buying their bogus products. We have fat in our skin ladies - we are supposed to - and it bunches up sometimes. Wear clothes for pete's sake if it bothers you! Photoshop and airbrushes have done more damage to the female psyche than anything else - never trust a photo - it is always manipulated. Trust instead what you see around you - perfectly normal lovely people everywhere, each with their own special charms!
ReplyJulia - I completely agree with you!
ReplyThe fact that anyone on here (or elsewhere) would suggest that she's fat or needs to do lunges, needs to be or will be dieting and working out as a result of the over-reaction of some silly, insecure, wicked, ugly people shows how shallow society has become. My sister is like those of you who think JLove is fat...she (my sister) works out twice a day, eats very little, and is miserable. My sister thinks of herself as fat. She's probably a size 4-6. She's FAR from fat. She could be the most beautiful person on the planet, but she'd still be ugly because of how she perceives others appearances and judges others and herself for their so-called flaws. It's because of idiots in the media, in tinsel-town, and unhappy people around the globe with nothing better to do than judge others to make themselves feel better that were even using this medium to discuss such a ridiculous topic - whether or not she's lying about being a size 2. Gads, people, get a freaking life. I bet every one of you passing judgment on her is ugly either on the outside or on the inside. (The inside part is obvious)
I agree with Julia and others when they say all of you haters should be ashamed of yourselves.
Jealous much?
I am...I wish I looked like JLove. She's beautiful, sexy, has a great body, she's happy with herself, has a man who's crazy about her, she's working regularly in Hollywood, she's not getting arrested, drinking and driving, and she's not a bad singer, either. She's doing everything right in my book. We should all be so lucky.
ReplyMore power to her.
Wow...."Mia" brings up an important subject here. Distortion of facts on stars by
the media is an ugly thing. JLH has worn bikinis before,
but because of her dating/personal life this is suddenly
becoming outlandishly important....and since she really IS clean-living
the media doesn't have much else to feed on....
BTW, so is the case when Jennifer Love Hewitt is tricked
Replyinto dating a foreign guy (who obviously wants citizenship) by not one,but TWO gypsy fake "psychics"...
who tell her to do nonsense things (at random). Though it's nice that a self-
professed psychic was smart enough to write a hit show for her, blind faith in
EVERYBODY labelled "psychic" is NOT so nice.
