Quiznos Calories: No Wonder They Concealed Them

by J. Foster

quiznos.jpg

Fast food outlet Quiznos has finally listed their nutrition information.

A brief look through the data shows some outrageously high Calorie amounts in their food.

Healthy Tuna?
A large Tuna Melt Sub (incl. cheese and dressing) amounts to 2090 Calories (including a whopping 175 grams of fat).

Vegetarian?
A large Veggie sub (incl. cheese and dressing) totals 1220 Calories (including 75 grams of fat).

Salads
The Chicken Caesar salad rates at 1000 Calories (including dressing). The Classic Cobb serves up 1070 Calories (including dressing).

Have a look through the Quiznos site - you will need to look for a small link at the foot of the page that says "Show Nutrition Information".

The lesson here is: there is no way to guess nutrition information at most restaurants. Even the healthiest looking item can be very energy dense.

Okay, really, how do you stuff so many calories into a single sandwich? Unless somehow the vegetarian one really means cheese, dressing, and a few vegetables thrown on for looks, I really don't get it. It doesn't even sound appetizing.

ugh, that's exactly what vegetarian means. i've only eaten at quiznos once, because the 'veggie' sandwich was full of oily dressing and greasy cheese. i'm not surprised by the nutritionals.

i eat at quiznos every saturday. there are ways to lighten up the subs and the #1 factor is all that cheese. when i ask for a small veggie sub, i do not get guacamole, that reduces the calorie count a lot. i also ask for just one or two slices of cheese as opposed to the 4 pieces they put on a SMALL sub. i also ask for wheat bread and i do not get the dressing on the sub, i get it on the side. if you can reduce calories by eating the right way at mcdonalds, it is more than feesable at a place like quiznos :)

Well, yes, diet-blog, if you only examine the maximum number of calories for a large sandwich, then it's going to be a lot. A large Quiznos sub should feed two comfortably. I've been to Quizno's manny times, and I've never heard of "dressing" on a Italian sub.

A small veggie without cheese is a respectable (as in, you'll respect yourself) 270 calories without cheese, 370 with.

Though that tuna melt sub looks deadly even in small proportions (they must load their tuna salad with fat-heavy mayo), remember that you wouldn't add extra cheese to it: a tuna melt starts with a slice of cheddar.

It's much like subway though- if you choose the 12 inch at subway and load it with cheese, a bunch of meat, and calorie loaded condiments like mayo, the health value goes out the door. You can make healthy choices no matter where you go, including Quiznos if you order a smaller portion and be selective about what goes on it.

The large subs at Quiznos are HUGE! Half of one of those babies is already a big sandwich, so it's not exactly surprising. They do load up their subs as a matter of course, but you can ask them not to. Anyone who assumes that a sub is automatically a healthier meal option is deluding themselves, especially if they're eating a giant sub loaded with meat and cheese.

I agree with a lot of the comments here. You can easily get your hands on a 1500 calorie sub at Subway, just like you can get a

I think the great part here is since they've now published the nutritional information, you can make an educated choice.

Be sure to view Quiznos website. I did and the truth is a little stretched here. This is my first time on this website and the first article I read seems false, I don't know if I will come back.

How is that even possible. Do they sit in a room and say "gee guys we really could stuff an extra 1000 calories in every item. We we try hard enough." wtf is up with those crazy calorie amounts.

Spectra on 11/19/07

I've never eaten at Quizno's, but I'm sure it's the same as any other sandwich: you add calories by adding stuff like cheese, mayo, guacamole, dressings, oil, etc. You can almost always get any fast food sandwich made healthier by skipping all the cheese, getting mustard instead of mayo, asking for your salad without dressing (and then either use your own lowfat variety or put the dressing on the side and just use a little bit), etc.

As a lot of the other comments say, this article is really misleading. The large is more than any sensible person could eat in one sitting, and any more the medium is too large as well, for me. I've been disappointed in this blog before for giving misleading information and this is no exception.

For those expressing disbelief at the calorie count, it's because only the large values are listed here, and the large subs are truly enormous - 16 inches? That much bread, oil, and cheese are of course going to lead to higher calorie counts. But I'm very pleasantly surprised by the calorie counts on the small/regular subs.

The large sandwiches can feed 2 people. They are a lot bigger than any subway sandwich. I refuse to eat at subway and quiznos anyway, too much sodium. You people are on a diet blog and eat subway? You must all be puffy from the sodium.

Not all of us do, but we are still allowed to be shocked at the calorie count. Even with them being optional, it's still unbelievable that these are considered options.

Who cares? Quiznos never claimed to be a low fat sandwich place. Its sandwiches blow Subway away in the taste department. It's all about personal responsibility. Even Quizno's subs can be part of a healthy diet if planned for

When we got our first Quiznos over here I ordered a sub - without any sauce - and it was still way too rich for me. So I went looking for the nutritional info online and none was to be found! Immediately I thought this couldn't be a good sign. Holy caloric intake, batman. That is insane!

Love their broccoli cheese soup though! Mmm. :)

I remember at least a few years ago when all my friends were going on about how many calories were in a Subway sub as compared to say, a Big Mac. They were trying to justify eating McD's over Subway just based on calories.

Like so many have said, it was simplifying things.

#1 of course is the quality of food you are taking in. At least with a sub shop you have some control over the quality of the carbs, fats and protein you are taking in.

I'm completely shocked when I go out and grab a meal with friends and they order a packed large sub. 12 inches or 16 on white bread doused with sauces and packed with fatty meat. It's an absolutely tremendous amount of packed unhealthy fat/protein/carb choices, especially since I've started eating 6 smaller meals a day. Even two of my small meals don't add up to the amount of calories some of their large sub choices.

For me the bottom line is simply making healthy choices no matter where you are. A 6 inch sub can be made more filling by choosing quality fats, proteins and carbs.

Not to mention once you limit those habit forming tastes, a little goes a long way. I remember dousing my subs as a teenager with mayo and sauces galore. A single line of honey mustard is plenty for me now.

And don't even try to serve me a pecan pie.

It's all relative!

Just look at the ads that compare quiznos to Subway. Quiznos advertises itself as having a big meaty sandwich. so it should be no surprise that their items are calorie dense.

I love Quiznos but realize it's not a great place to start if you're looking for a 'healthy' alternative. I went there yesterday and had a regular classic club w/ bacon, but with NO dressings, and only wheat. That was still probably a ton. Most of the calories and fat are in the dressings!!! In the midst of a weight loss bet, so trying to avoid the big Q.

Yes, some of the extremes were listed here (e.g. the large sub including dressing). The thing is - people can and do order very large portions and consume them singlehandedly. Portion distortion is a very real problem with many people always overestimating portion-size.

Food outlets that continue to offer these gargantuan amounts of food (often at affordable prices) are not helping.

The fact that such offerings appear on menus would indicate that there is demand for them

If I really wanted to get extreme I would have added in the calorie count for a soda and a side of some sort.

Eat well and choose wisely.

Anything in any restaurant, from fast food to gourmet, will usually be high in fat calories and will be served as copious amounts of food! (Unless, of course it is a tres chic, nouveau cuisine which serves minimal portions displayed as artwork). They are marketing to your taste buds and the American "more is better" mentality....and it has worked as we breach 65%+ of the population being grossly overweight to obese. I'm actually pleasantly surprised by the calorie content in my menu item of choice: the raspberry chipotle chicken salad. It is SO GOOD! Yum!! With the flatbread and the dressing, it is only 830 calories, and it is enough for 2 meals for me, so 415 calories per meal. I would have guessed over 1000 calories for the whole salad.

Reply
Natalia on 11/21/07

Fireboy and Beth, the data above is identical to the Quiznos website. The default nutrition information given is for a small sandwich without cheese or sauce. The information above is for a large sandwich including cheese and sauce. I don't know who the "idoit" is that you speak of Beth, but I assume you are saying the information for the vegetarian sub was wrong (sorry if I'm misinterpreting). In the small sub with no cheese and sauce there are 70 calories from fat. In the large sub with cheese and sauce (the sandwich mentioned above) there are 75 GRAMS of fat. Yes, the data above is for worst scenarios to add to the shock effect, but it shows how even someone who tries to overestimate the calories when eating out can be in for a shock. Not to mention making sure you are entering in the right information into their nutrition calculation so you don't walk away figuring you ate 10 grams of fat when you really had 80!

you realize that guacamole is actually healthy for you. The avocado has a lot of fat in it, but its all healthy fat and calories. Also, wheat bread is not good for you, whole wheat is. If you get wheat and think youre being healthy, youre only lieing to yourself, its actually just as bad, if not worse than white bread.Reply

This is just silly. Go to the menu link at www.quiznos.com and hit the nutritional information link at the bottom of the menu. The vegie sub has 270 calories and 8 grams of fat. The tuna melt has 500 calories and 33 grams of fat (still a lot but NOTHING like this article posts. Come on people, think about it. You can't cram all that fat and calories into one sandwich...geez.

This is the site where they got their numbers from. The nutritional values on quizno's website are only if u got like a small size meal, reduced or no dressing, a healthier bread, and so on.

If anyone would check out the website for Quiznos, you will find the figures provided in the article are not correct. The link is at the bottom of www.quiznos.com. The link is called Nutritional Information and it is given for each product they sell. The figures in this article are almost doubled and in one case, tripled. The facts should have been checked before this article was published.

Natalia on 11/22/07

Well maybe Quiznos won't regret printing their nutrition information after all if everyone is this sloppy in reading their nutrition information. The figures above are for LARGE sandwiches WITH CHEESE AND SAUCE. The default info at quiznos is for the SMALL size sandwich with NO cheese or sauce. When I've been in there the majority have ordered regular size sandwiches with the cheese and sauce, making their caloric totals closer to the large sandwich, though not quite as high.

Please. I'm getting tired of this. The quiznos site is awkward to use and you have to click on Small / Medium / or Large - otherwise you only ever see the info for the small subs.

A screen dump has been added to the post above (directly from the Quiznos site) to show the information is correct.

Of course we checked out this information before it was posted. And yes it is for a LARGE tuna melt sub + cheese + dressing. Whether or not Quiznos add the dressing by default is up for debate.

Of course Quizno's food is high in fat and calories. Did anyone think otherwise? I'm actually shocked that my personal fave (chicken carbonara)isn't worse than it is. I remember the first time that I got one...I thought to myself, "Wow, this must be absolutely horrible for me...nothing this good can be healthy". Use your heads when you eat. Once a month isn't going to hurt you. Three times a week will.

Tracy on 11/25/07

The numbers are astounding at first glance, I agree. But since when does a health-conscious person actually eat a whole, large sandwich to themselves? Personally, I get the SMALL size sandwiches when I go... and I am usually stuffed by the end of that. The small sandwiches, according to the website, look like they pack 200-400 calories, which is more like it. It's like a Whopper vs. Whopper Jr. Of course the Whopper is going to be laden with calories. So, if you're watching your health/weight, you opt for the smaller portions.

Jim on 11/25/07

The information provided is just from what they list is on those particular subs. The ones on the website are going to be cut back to make them look competitive. If they want to compare their subs to Subway and show a sub that is double meat compared to Subways regular sub than their going to use the calorie count from them subs. Subway is so much more healthy and you have better information provided. Also I can buy several subs at Subway for the cost of one Quizno's sub. You know whats funny is that commercial they had comparing their sub to Subway's. Theirs is double the meat and double the cost. If you want a double meat of triple meat sub at Subway you can get one and its still cheaper than Quiznos and has more meat.
