Why Was it You Couldn’t Exercise Today?

Feeling a little tired? Just not "up for" a run or hike? That trick knee a little sore? Just starting to figure out what’s going on in 'Lost’?
Whatever your reason for not getting yourself moving lately, here are some stories that I hope will inspire you:
Wilma Rudolph
Was born the 20th of 22 children in a poor family. As a child, she suffered from measles, mumps, scarlet fever, chicken pox and double pneumonia. If this wasn’t bad enough, her left leg and foot were becoming weak and deformed. She was told she had polio and would never walk.
Despite the odds, Wilma began playing basketball and later competed in track and field. At the age of 16 she competed in the 1956 Olympics and then went on to win 3 gold medals in the 1960 Olympics.
Dick and Rick Hoyt
This father-son team has competed together in a formidable 950 athletic events – including 8 Ironman triathlons. Not bad, you say… but what if I told you that Rick is a quadriplegic with cerebral palsy? The Hoyt’s once trekked 3,735 miles across America – without taking a day off!
Marla Runyan is fast.
She sizzles on the track to the tune of a shade-above-4-minute 1500m. She finished 8th at the 2000 Olympics and at 38, Marla still runs sub 2:30 marathons. Most could only dream of such athletic achievements.
Oh, I forgot to mention... Marla Runyan is legally blind.
So why was it you (I) couldn’t exercise today, again?
Oh please, don't tell me I can't sit on my couch munching 3 bags of Family-Size Doritos just because there are better people then me. I'm happy being an obese lard-cow!

While injuries and illnesses can be temporary obstacles to doing our normal routines, too many people use minor problems as excuses to give up exercising entirely.
It's amazing what huge disabilities some people can overcome--we can learn a lot from them!

ReplyWalking. I don't have a car. I walk just about every where I go-even while running errands. My doctor was thrilled to hear this..but I've been doing it so long now, my body got used to it. Now the Doc says since my body got used to it ...I have to walk more. This is NOT what I wanted to hear! When will it ever stop? More, more, more. Me & my errands are up to 1hour & 45 minutes. To tell u the truth..I'm not sure if I even have the time!
Are you trying to lose weight from walking, and seen your weight loss stalled out? As an alterative to walking more, you can walk faster, or run.
But it would probably be best to get into the gym and lift weights, if you aren't already. Steady-state cardio is just not a particularly good way to recompose the body.
ReplyMy excuse for not exercising today (well other than a short social walk) is I ran 26.2 miles Saturday, did a recovery run of 6 miles yesterday, and decided my body needed a rest day. :D How's that for an excuse?

ReplyI only take a day off when I REALLY need one. Usually it's after a long workout the day before. Reading these stories makes me realize that a lot of people really make excuses when in reality, they really ARE just excuses. Most of us could work out a lot more than we do, but it's all a matter of how important it is to you.
ReplyI didn't exercise today bexause it's getting dark before I can hit the trail. I think I will walk in my hall way for about 30 minutes.

oh, I walk at leat half an hour a day :) Sometimes I jog with a friend of mine.

ReplyThis is a really good post. I'm a huge anti-excuse advocate. I have yet to hear one I can't work around. It's really a matter of priorities. When you say, "I'm too busy" it really means I chose to do other things instead of exercise (or plan healthy meals). It's always about choices.

ReplyVery inspirational stories. Its amazing how powerful the human spirit is and what can be accomplished when a person sets their mind to it. These are great examples to look to the next time a person feels too tired to wake up in the morning to workout.
ReplyAnd to think, I sometimes just feel a little lazy.
If I don't feel like going on a ride because it is a little cold my wife reminds me that there are people here in Calgary that ride their bike to work EVERY day of the year, not just when it is warm out
ReplyIt is so easy to find excuses not to exercise. But I always feel so good after exercise, that I can't believe I was trying to get out of it in the first place. Always think of how you will feel afterwards. That's one of the things that gets me going.
ReplyMy excuse is that I don't have nearly enough disabilities to be an inspiring story.
Oky, no, not really, I didn't exercise today becaues my husband was home. I don't exercise in front of him as he tends to make jokes.
I do exercise the 5 nights a week that he's at work though.
ReplyWell, maybe you have never heard it before, but exercising is good for your health. It may sound wornout, but with a job that keeps you busy all day long, you won't get to enjoy your fifties, despite all the money you've earned. So what's the point in working hard, if you can not lay back, relax and enjoy your wealth because of your bad health. And all because of neglected exercising. If you'd just take 30 minutes per day to walk, jogg or do aerobics, it would help you stay fit and you would go a long way toward reaching old age looking and feeling better than ever.
ReplyIt is easy to make excuses but it takes true determination to actually get up and take action. I never used to exercise, in fact I would break out in a sweat at just the thought. But my life has changed in the last six months and I owe to all to exercise and a healthy eating plan. No more excuses, get moving!
ReplyI am busy with school. I would love to exercise, but I have to deal with making dinner, getting my essays done, and dealing with a sick roommate. Not only that but a full schedule at school and a full schedule at work, makes exercising almost equivalent to dessert...I used to go to the gym and do some cardio and strenght, but I really don't have an hour to spare at the moment. Hopefully soon I can get back to my squats and lunges...(I still do them at home, but its not the same).
