Trim Trolleys: Get Fit While Shopping

by J. Foster

Tesco supermarkets in Britain are introducing a new kind of trolley (according to InventorSpot).

The aim is to provide shoppers with an opportunity to get some exercise.

There are a variety of levels on the trolley and show pushers how much calories they are burning up on the screen. According to most shoppers, after a while it feels like they are pushing a very heavy trolley.

It appears the prototype trolley (from Wanzl) has a gearing mechanism that makes it harder to push.

The irony is inescapable. The cornerstone of weight management is diet.

Imagine seeing someone pushing their trim trolley - stocked full of junk food.

In a lot of supermarkets the trolleys have been so abused that the wheels hardly turn anyway -- resulting in resistance exercise for the arms trying to get the trolleys to navigate in a straight line or around the corner to the next aisle. It seems to me that supermarkets could save a lot of money by collecting these trashed trolleys and putting signs on them touting their improved exercise potential for the customers. This way the supermarkets don't have to buy any new trolleys.

LOL -- great irony indeed!

I guess every few extra calories burned helps, but it would be much cheaper to attach a few bricks or something to the trolley, or maybe just load the trolley with heavy but healthy goods such as melons or pumpkins!

Also, one has to be sure that they don't visit the bakery or confectionery aisles with the mindset of "I've had a bit more exercise today so am entitled to a treat"

hahahaha, it would be funny to see someone counting calories they burn as they count the calories they are throwing into the cart. i just dont think that most folks are going to intentionally stay in the supermarket in order to make sure they've burned so many calories. i think a gym is less crowded and offers more variety- and less temptation!!

I could loan out my kids--with 3 under 5, I can usually be found pushing nearly 120 pounds of kids through the grocery store. Quickly!

While I doubt that this invention will catch on, I think it raises an important point. If you cook at home, you are forced to get at least a little more activity from walking the grocery store and standing at the kitchen chopping versus those who go through the drive-thru!

Not a bad idea, but sweating in the grocery store doesn't seem like much fun.

How about carrying a basket instead of using a cart at all? I know that especially for families bigger than two like mine a cart is a necessity, but so often I see people with these huge carts and only 5-15 items in them, all of which would've easily fit in a basket.

Seems ridiculous to me. You would probably burn off more calories by parking further away from the store.

I really don't see how this burns calories. When you shop to stop and browse. Reminds me of the latest diet gimmicks.

It's kind of a good idea, I guess. When I worked in a warehouse pulling orders, I often had to pull pallets weighing 2000 lbs or so around using a pallet jack and it was indeed a workout. Of course, I was doing that 8 hours a day, so I'm sure I burned some pretty serious calories. I'm not sure 20 minutes or so of cruising through the store burns all THAT many calories. And yeah, I can just picture people loading their carts up with chips and cookies because they feel like they've earned it. But any time you can squeeze in a few more minutes of exercise, it's a good thing.

When I think of all the hours I've spent grazing up and down the grocery aisles (particularly in front of the Ben&Jerry's freezer case, lol), it would be great to know that there'd been something positive that came out of it! Thanks for sharing!

Or ... grocery stores could carry healthier foods at the store - or market healthier foods...

I Love Tesco. I can see a possible problem with this though....if you don't have much upper body strength, you could end up using your back to push the cart, thus straining your lower back.

This has got to be one of my favorite!! How about taking out all escalators and elevators and mandating stairs be used, that would be more effective.!!

Wouldn't the added resistance just make them harder to steer? Besides, I usually go to the grocery store with my husband and he pushes the cart - I have trouble getting them to go around corners. Sounds pathetic huh?
I agree with what has been said about people compensating for the exercise they would get pushing the cart. I mean really, it's not that much, and you could undo your work in seconds flat.
People should be out walking, or getting their exercise in the gym instead.

It is incredible seeing the changes the fitness industry or store companies are taking eating healthy and shopping. These seem pretty cool but I think they are pointless.
