Bizarre Dessert Award: Oreo Pizza

by Dr. Carmin Iadonisi

If you are having a chocolate craving after your pizza, then Domino's Pizza now has the answer.

It is called the Oreo Dessert Pizza.

If you have no idea what I am talking about, then you probably have not seen the “slightly bizarre” commercial.

So what exactly is in this dessert?

According to the official Domino's website, The Oreo Dessert Pizza is basically a sweetened wheat flour crust, covered in vanilla sauce and icing and then topped off with mounds of Oreo cookie crumbs. (Thus giving the apropos beard above.)

The ingredients are pretty much what you would expect in a pizza covered in cookies, although there seems to be a double serving of high fructose corn syrup in the vanilla sauce.

Interestingly, the calorie breakdown for “1-slice” of the Oreo Dessert Pizza is actually less than an average piece of pizza. One small slice contains 120 calories, 20 grams of carbohydrates and 4 grams of fat.

Even though it is not that calorically dense, judging by all the unhealthy ingredients, I think I would still prefer to eat my pizza alone.

Let us know your opinion if you have tried the Domino's Oreo Dessert Pizza.

I'm an Oreo fan from way back in the day but this pizza was absolutely disgusting. Bleh!

The commercial is both nauseating and hilarious. The idea of an Oreo Pizza is just nauseating!

Lately I've been really fascinated by the marketing around fast and convenience (i.e., non-healthy) foods. I've been reading "Mindless Eating" and it provides some really interesting insights into "decoding" the spin that makes some of these things sound and look appealing...however bizarre they might actually be!

Sounds disgusting to me! But while we're on the topic of pizza, I noticed Domino's Pizza in general is more "healthy" than others like Pizza Hut. Less calories, less grams of fat, etc. While it's not my favorite, I feel less guilty eating it. :)

Oreos make me sick. The cream stuff in the middle makes my mouth feel like I dipped it in Crisco. Yuck. I do like the Oreo cookie 100 calorie granola bars though, they don't have any of that Crisco Cream. I wouldn't touch an Oreo pizza with a 30 foot pole. My daughter tried some while eating at a neighbors house one night and she said she like it but it was way too sweet.

I am not a big fan of Oreo also, it just tastes way too sweet for me. Not to mention that the black colored biscuit also turns me off. The idea of Oreo Pizza is a great marketing stuffs though. At the very least people will try the pizza and most likely will end up ordering some other pizzas as well. Even if the Oreo Pizza is a miss, I am sure Domino can still benefit from the word of mouth they received from this Oreo Pizza.

I seem to remember Pizza Hut doing a dessert pizza a while back when they had all you can eat pizza buffets in some of their locations. Personally, I prefer to keep my dinners separate from my desserts.

We have a local pizzeria (with two locations) that makes a pizza with whole wheat crust. Probably not 100% whole wheat though. I'd eat there if I get a pizza craving.

I used to make my own pizzas that were actually 100% whole wheat, following a recipe for bread that was on the bag of flour. That was the best tasting pizza I'd ever had :)

How funny! I don't watch TV and I don't eat Domino's so I've missed out on the marketing buzz. So I was super surprised this morning when I saw my boyfriend's roommate's pizza box with an ad for an oreo pizza!

I would not touch that pizza, ever. If I'm going to indulge I'm going to get some Godiva, not some HFCS in the shape of dry black crackers. Ugh.

I would rather just eat a bag of Oreos. Of course, Slices of persimmon, loquat, or japanese pears would make a tastier (and healthier) dessert.

Cookies on pizza? Sweet Pizza. Hmmn...No I still love my original Domino pizzas without the extra sugar. Thank you.

Ick.

But! In Umbria, a traditional Easter specialty is pizza dolce, or sweet pizza. It's a plain pizza made with a sweet, vanilla-scented dough.

That just sounds utterly disgusting. I watched the commercial on YouTube--like an above commentator, I don't watch television--and it was appallingly stupid. But the whole idea of a dessert pizza constructed from Oreos aside, the Oreos themselves are repulsive to my mouth. Despised them since I can remember, and only ate them voluntarily twice in the eleven or twelve year period before I cut similar junk completely from my diet.

Watching that commercial makes my arteries harden up, lol. Seriously, I'd NEVER eat that. It looks disgusting, especially since I hate Oreos. I'm not a big pizza fan, either, so I guess it's a total miss for me. I guess it's still a slightly better choice than, say, a stuffed crust Meat Lover's pizza. But I think that if I want pizza, I'll just make my own using whole wheat flour, tomato sauce, lots of veggies, and a sprinkling of part skim mozzerella cheese.

Oh, and I do remember Pizza Hut's dessert pizza on their buffet. When I was in high school, we'd go there sometimes and eat about 4 slices of regular pizza and then a couple of slices of the dessert pizza...I don't remember really loving it; I just ate it because it was there. It just goes to show that my eating habits have really changed since then. I no longer just eat dessert because "it's there". I eat things I LOVE. Like dark chocolate or a good beer. Not Oreo pizza.

Domino's pizza is owned by a right-wing fanatic with a bunch of nutty ideas (yes, I know that's redundant). I'd avoid it if you don't want the guilt factor!

The first time I couldn't understand a 'cookie' was when I had a Fig-Newton. Now the Oreo is an American icon. It's not the construction but the deconstruction of them that made them a household favorite! The pizza thing, however, takes all the fun out of it, I'll pass.

I have to second all the others who have sung the praises of homemade pizza. In the time delivery takes, it's possible to whip up a homemade and relatively healthy pizza!

True that... Maybe they could, um, make a calzone with a white creme filling and chocolate dough? Although, that's beginning to become more like a Fig Newton. There's something interesting going on here, topologically.

Okay, I'll give my one trivia fact for the day: peperoni pizza in Italy has no meat. No Oreos, either.

I ordered it, and I ate 2 pieces...it was yeah yuck. Apparently it was so yucky that my 3 "sugarhound" kids didn't even eat any of it! I felt guilty about spending the money on it so I finished the disgustin thing off. :-( I however never got an oreo beard at all.:-P

Calories are irrelevant. What matters is the effect of the food on blood sugar levels and the overall nutritional value. Every time you eat a piece of food of lower nutritional value you loose a chance to eat something more valuable for your body. And 150 kCal of pizza is not same as 150 kCal of organic fruit, vegetables or nuts and seeds. The concept of calories is beneficial mostly to producers of processed food, never to people who eat the food.

"You got 75% correct." That's a pass, right?

And I'm not sure I'm believing the nutrition count here.

I tried Oreo pizza a couple of weeks ago in New York. I was really looking forward to it because I love oreos and have a real sweet tooth. Anyway, I was very disappointed. It takes 20 minutes to make&bake (I don´t know why they have to bake it) and it is nothing special and not in the same league as the cookies at all.

Alexandra,

Thanks for taking the diet blog and turning it into another hysterical left wing blog. I'm sure nobody will ever touch another Domino's pizza now that you have outed them as EVIL BUSH SUPPORTERS. Mwahahahaha!!!

Isn't pizza good enough. I just can't believe they did this as I can't think of anything better than pizza. If people love sweets than that is great for them but on a list of healthy eating I would give it a 0. At least pizza has protein and other nutrients that our body using.

Besides, Tom Monaghan doesn't have any connection with Domino's Pizza any more. Which makes sense. Tom has given support to the Thomas More law center, which has been on the side of defending Intelligent Design.

Confronting an Oreo Pizza, can anyone then truly believe in Intelligent Design?

I guess if you're having Domino's pizza you're not too concerned about your health but this is ridiculous. Plus the ad was more disgusting than appetizing.

We bought one of these things and tried it. Double yuck! The "whole wheat crust" has the consistency of compressed cardboard and the toppings are all kinds of nasty!

Dr.J,

Inspired by the Oreo quiz (I did about as well as you), I looked for a comparable quiz on Fig Newtons (which, as a child, I ate by first nibbling off the outside until i had a ball of fig goo).I came across the following question as a quiz about urban legends:

True or False: That little bit of crunch in Fig Newtons could be due to the bugs that inadvertently get into the fig paste.

It seems some poeple have tried it but have a bad impression. I have had it and its not as sweet as it would seem. I personally like it but I have a big sweet tooth and I am nto a picky person.

This dessert is unconventional (I think every desert was at one point), that seems to bother poeple along with its "unhealthiness". Dessert(not fruit as dessert) usually doesnt equal healthy. Most desserts are made or jammed with sugar and fat among other things.

I don't understand why many people here don't like it..
I mean yeah, it's a hell lot of empty calories, but that's not the debate here. It's whether it's good or not, and I find it to be pretty good. I actually like it better when it's been put in the fridge for a few hours than it being hot.

It IS a little sweeter than I'd like, but I would buy it again.
