Should We Ban Fast Food Restaurants?
Los Angeles officials are considering implementing a 2 year ban on new fast food outlets in the south of the district.
"The people don't want them [fast food outlets], but when they don't have any other options, they may gravitate to what's there,"

The LA Times has counted up the restaurants:
...analysis of the city's roughly 8,200 restaurants found that South Los Angeles has the highest concentration of fast-food eateries. Per capita, the area has fewer eating establishments of any kind than the Westside, downtown or Hollywood, and about the same as the Valley. But a much higher percentage of those are fast-food chains. South L.A. also has far fewer grocery stores.
A previous discussion looked at implementing obesity-related legislation. Here's why I feel uncomfortable with these sorts of bans:
- Advertisers (especially fast food vendors) spend billions of dollars trying convince us to buy their products. Why? Because we - the customers - are the key to their bottom line (and ultimately their survival as a business).
- If - in great numbers - consumers refuse to shop at a certain place - that company will suffer. Never underestimate the power you have in your pocket book (or wallet).
- If the local people of South LA didn't spend their money on junk food, then the outlets wouldn't be there (and there would be no need for legislation).
There are areas in the world where McDonald's outlets have been closing. Why? Not because of legislation but because people got sick of McDonald's food.
More like this in Big Business
Why not implement a fast food tax? The money could partially go toward developing new cell tower technology so our bees will stop dying off... which directly impacts agriculture. The rest could go to schools so we wouldn't have to feel bad for turning down the cute kids selling candy freakin' bars... our PTAs and PTOs pump kids up and send them out to sell crap while back at school they are taught the basic food groups. Stop killing bees. Stop school fundraisers. Tax Fast Food!
ReplyI came across this posting and was intrigued that my name should be included as a commenter.
Lo and Behold I didn't write the above "Paul Young" posting. As proof I can only say I do not drive by BK, White Castle, Wendy's, KFC, McDonalds, Long John Silvers on my way home. - I go past a McD's, Jack in the Box, BK, Subway, two Chinese $ Menu joints, a mom & pop burger joint, Papa Johns, a take out BBQ ribs outfit and two south of the border restaurants (1 Mexican and 1 El Salvadorian with a B rating).
But whoever the other Paul Young is, is my brother at heart. (I know what the meaning of is, is!)
Quito said, LA Council member Jan Perry, representative of District 9. She's no dummy...
Right on Quito! Right on!!! She is no dummy because she has a SWELL website! and she knows that the rectal apertures the SWELL school systems put out are willing to give up freedom if someone that has a SWELL website tells them it is a SWELL idea they will think it is SWELL.

WHO ARE YOU PEOPLE?
WHY DO YOU FEEL IT NECCESSARY TO RUN OTHER PEOPLES LIVES?
DON'T YOU HAVE ANYTHING BETTER TO DO?
I don't expect any reasonable answers from you folks that don't understand history as the other Paul Young does. Just know that there are two of us out here.
You food Nazis need to find another outlet for your insecurities. Try running your own lives instead of the lives of others!

Replyif fast food restaurant just make healthy foods it will help the restaurants and it will help the people that eat it too. It help the restaurant because they will make more money and it help the people because they eating healthy food.
ReplyFAST FOOD REASTAURANTS SHOULD BE BANNED, PERIOD!
ReplyI think you are right but some people are going to very angry. Some fast food places are very tasty and they have healthy food. Most fast food places are not as healthy as some people would like them to be but most of them do have some Healthy food like salads and fruit.
ReplyWe should banned the fast food places and leave the kinda healthy fast food places.
ReplyOh and if you are angry cause people think that people want to banned the fast food places then you should probably get over it cause not all of them are going to get banned I would be suprised if even one gets banned from Bloomington. Or even anywhere. People really love fast food and junk food although I am not to crazy about fast food myself but some people are. Ya BANNED THE FAST FOOD PLACES.
ReplyThink about what you are putting in your body .Think about your kids what your putting in thier body when they eat fast food junk. NASTY STUFF IT'S A BUNCH OF JUNK WE DON'T NEED

I just don't understand what is happening in America these days. What happened to freedom? Don't we cherish that anymore?
I don't much care to see obese people engorging themselves with fast food, but I'll be the last one to support a ban on anything. Just because they can't control their diet and lifestyle habits doesn't mean I should be denied fast food when and where I want it. My responsibility is to myself and those I am personally responsible for, such as my children. We all eat out often and we all maintain healthy waistlines.
Do you think without fast food would we be spending big budgets and 90 minutes every night making lavish meals? No, most of us would make hot dogs in the microwave or fry incredibly thick and greasy hamburgers on the stove with an occasional box pasta meal to spice things up. None of these are much healthier than McDonald's which does offer some healthful choices. Educate people to make those healthy choices, fine, but leave the restaurant industry alone. Imagine taking long road trips without fast food places along the way...ugh!!
Some Americans have become so high and mighty in their self-opinions. They say, "I'm thin and you should be too so I'm going to do whatever I can to force you to be thin. I'm even going to hinder the entire restaurant industry itself! I don't need it and you shouldn't either. I want you to cook at home for your family, even though I don't know any of you personally. I think (because my opinion is so important and elevated) we'd be better off without fast food places so let's deny everyone the right to enjoy it."
News flash: We really don't care what you think.
Yet, you won't give up. Thanks to people like you, one day we'll all be living in sterile home environments made of stainless steel and glass... our air conditioners spitting out ammonia to keep things sanitary... dinner will be tasteless health food like alfalfa sprouts and tofu... going to bed at 8pm because all the fun and enjoyment has been sucked out of our lives. No after-dinner drink, no midnight cigar, the taste of cola and pizza long forgotten, no television or video games, and intimate relations among married couples will have to be scheduled with the local hospitals. Of course I'm exaggerating, but the point being those who have a "ban" mindset are never satisfied. The process just keeps repeating itself over and over with different things until we suddenly realize we have nothing left.
Not everything has to be good for you, but serves its purpose even if only for entertainment or enjoyment. In fact, most things which are truly enjoyable are not healthy. So what? Leave things alone and let the people live a life worth living. And for the love of all that is sacred let's stop this "ban" mentality.
