What Gives You Character?

A long time ago, there was a young girl with a gap between her front teeth. This girl absolutely, positively, did not like this gap. Because she did not like the gap between her teeth, she decided to try not to smile. This attempt ended almost immediately, because she was a fairly happy girl. The notion, though, never left her mind.
Fast-forward about a year, when said girl is about 10 years old. Through an encounter with an older, much "looked up to" woman, she is told what a great smile she has.
The girl couldn’t help but deny such a compliment, declaring that her two front teeth were nowhere near touching, and therefore her smile could not be so great.
The woman said to the girl: “But that gives you character. Otherwise, your smile just might be like everyone else’s.”
The girl has never forgotten that day.
What makes you different makes you special.
She loved that statement so much that she carried it over into other areas of her life and her body. That girl is now a bit older and bit wiser (and her teeth are now not only touching but a tad overlapping). She tends to embrace all of her differences with a smile.
In biology class once the teacher said to us:
"Everyone is unique. No one has the same DNA as anyone else"
And then one of my mates says:
"Just like everyone else. How unique. Not."
I thought it was brilliantly funny but deep at the same time.

ReplyI thought you were going to end the story by saying that girl turned out to be Madonna. :)
ReplyI thought it was gonna be Lauren Hutton.
ReplyWhat makes you different makes you special - feeling good about the difference gives you character.
ReplyNice story. Sometimes it seems like we are all supposed to be carbon copies of each other, but those people who are unique are the ones who make changes happen in the world.
ReplyNo one is special.
ReplyEveryone is special, but I think God loves me best.
ReplyNo self-esteem issues there, eh?
Replytoo bad god doesnt exist, so whatever makes you sleep better at night. haha.
ReplySpecial is as special does!
ReplyI've always hated my thighs until a few people have told me that my legs are nice and toned and I should be proud of them. So now I am :)
ReplyOK let me get this straight: No one is unique because we all have the SAME "different DNA"???
There is definately a strange and curious intelligence there. Your mate was probably a genius but way too cool to actually do any work, right? :-)

ReplyBeing unique takes many forms and the earlier parents can instill that into their kids, the better.
