How Young Men Lose Weight and Change Their Lives

eric1.jpg

Outside all the dramatic weight loss programs and hyped up testimonials - there are people who quietly go about changing themselves.

This story is very encouraging. I was excited to discover that Diet Blog played a role (again - reader comments on this blog directly impact and help people).

Eric's Story
At age 22, Eric weighed around 230 lbs (height 5' 10"). He claims that he was "always a fat kid".

During a particularly stressful time with a terminally ill grandparent, Eric gained a further 30lbs. The reasons were not complicated: comfort foods, stress, and no exercise.

Then came a crossroads - Eric's grandparent passed away. It was now time to move on.

Eric began connecting with friends again. "This is essential to any goal, including weight loss", writes Eric, "your friends and loved ones are a major force to help you through the process."

Eric marked a date - 26th August 2005. He took a photo of himself and saved it (see above). He subscribed to Men's Fitness, started exercising, and began playing the video game Dance Dance Revolution.

He would eat Kashi GoLean crunch, fruits and veg during the day and Boca Chick'n and cottage cheese for dinner.

Eric also encountered Diet Blog and remained focused on his goals.

"I read this blog everyday, kept eating right, running, and spending time with great friends and advancing in my career. Everything just came together."

By March 2006, Eric's weight was down to 185 lbs. "I felt great, people treated me differently based on looks, who'd have thought?"

Eric (May 2007)

Over a year later, Eric has kept the weight off.

"It really was a matter of willpower to get started, but it was a matter of health and happiness to stay with it.

I am healthier than I've ever been in my life, and am still eating and exercising like I did during the transformation. It has changed my life for the better."

Eric's transformation encouraged him to travel around Europe (something he had been putting off), and he has even set a goal to run the Chicago marathon in 2008.

For existing readers:
Eric told me that he has truly appreciated the support of you "amazing readers".

For new readers:
Be encouraged. No matter what age or stage - you can mark a date on your calendar, and begin to change your life for the better.

I feel Eric's pain, how loss can be comforted by something familiar as food. i'm not a guy, but the message is loud and clear. Great job, Eric- you're truly an inspiration.

Count this as a dude who lost about 120 pounds over the period of a year thanks to spending a lot of time surfing the online diet community...

only difference? Mine developed into anorexia nervosa and I ended up in the hospital at 6 foot 1 and 98 pounds... it;s been five years and i still deal with a boatload of eating disordered issues...

Healthy lifestyle = good.... obsession = dangerous. Be aware

Way to go Eric!
For me and my weight loss, I found that by holding back on carbs first thing in the morning, allowed my body to utilize its fatburnig abilities far better and stay in the zone, I guess its a bit like going as long as you can before your first smoke (if your a smoker that is) That way you dont kick start the craving cycle....something like that anyhow.
All the best in the future dude, you look way slick!

It's great to hear stories like this. Yes, people definitely treat you different based on appearance. After losing about 50 pounds, everyone wanted to talk to me, even the people who never gave me the time of day! =) It's sad, but very true!

Wow thanks so much for posting this! My fiance is 5'10 and a little less weight than Chris. He doesn't have allot o friends, but I am hoping by signing up for the gym together we can make losing pounds fun! I wonder if he will actually read the magazines if I get them..video games for sure :-)

I also want to sign him up for one of those custom diet programs like Jenny craig, but he is online ALL day. I will send him the membership for Balance D...a new program online..so he can have something private and personal to encourage him!

Hey eric, wonderful story. After hearing it ( well more reading it lol) but still, its helped me want to kick start my attempt at becoming more healthy and active.

If you can tell me your meal plan for your diet and possibly your workout plan, it would be a great help.

Thanks for the inspiration!

Congratulations on your successes. Your readers may be interested to learn about the effects of stress and chronic inflammation on weight gain. Research has shown that our position in the social hierarchy is intricately linked to stress, which in turn is linked to disease and weight gain. I need help. I gained 50lbs in a year and my self esteem is low now. I work out and i'll lose 10lbs quick but then gain them again because i lose focus, What can I do to stay on track?

Reply
Dr. J

The short answer, Roger, is something different!

The answer to your question is worth a million dollars. In all sincerity, I suggest looking at the whys and hows you get off track, and plan strategies for dealing with them You must learn to eat a healthier diet and be active. Perhaps getting into a weight training program would be motivating for you. I hope this is helpful.

The basics are still true. I dont like to work out, I do construction in the day & that is enough for me. So I will leave the workout out of this list. Besides eating smaller portions of the deserts, I eat more vegetables & a lot of fruit.
What I am getting to is I have lost weight doing the basics, I eat a little healthier but not much. I found if I go overboard & cut too many things out I will end up giving up & binging or once I lose weight & get off the diet I catch up for lost time if you know what I mean.
I went from 245 lbs. to 210 lbs. on about 5 weeks & I have kept it off for the first time since I started gaining weight 18 years ago.
I have learned to gorge on vegetables when eating lunch & dinner & then eat the good stuff. Other than that, I learned that if you are lacking vitamins & minerals, even just a few, your mind will crave something & we think it is too eat more & if what we eat does not have what we are lacking it does not fill the hole. Learning that is what took the weight off & is keeping it off. I was putting together 72 hour kits for a church project & there were these pills called Lifecaps They have all the vitamins & minerals even iodine in them. They are for survival not weight loss. But after I learned about lacking vitamins or minerals creates cravings we try to fill & that 95% of over the counter vitamins do not get digested & end up in the sewers. I researched different vitamins & companies. Anyway, while doing these 72 hour kits I learned about Lifecaps & I ordered 25 bottles for my personal 72 hour kits I built but also to try as my weight loss supplement. They are all natural, digest & get in your system within 20 minutes, even has a bit of natural sugar in them to keep your blood sugar levels stable. So I started taking 3 a day, one in the morning, one at lunch & one before dinner. I still eat candy bars, ice cream etc. I try to take smaller portions though. I drink a lot of water & eat a bunch of vegetebles at the beginning of lunch & dinner. It has been awesome, I dont have cravings at bed time, I am not looking in cupboards & the fridge for something, 10 minutes after dinner anymore. At the rate I am going, I might fit in a 32 waist again by Christmas. After I bought those 25 bottles, I got a coupon code & bought 75 more bottles, you can find them at lifecaps.net & use coupon code "healthcaps" to get 33% off.
This may not be for everyone, but it has worked for me. I do not drink energy drinks anymore, I wake up with energy. I could lose weight faster if I cut more things out of what I eat, but I figure I am losing weight consistently & I do not want to blow a good thing. I like to eat & I hate to work out.

I am a 30 years old and a father of an eight month daughter. Having a wife and kid is part of the reason that I don't get much time for myself. I am still and school and working full-time. However I do manage to go to the gym twice a week, which is not sufficient because I would like to workout intensely at least four times a week.

One of my co-workers told me that it is impossible for me to lose weight at this age since metabolism slows down with age. As far as my diet is concerned, I do not eat extremely greasy foods and keep the size of my meals minimal. I have boycotted from all junk food. Last time I went to McDonalds or Wendy's was ages ago.

I really wanna be lean and ripped. My stomach is what I need to work on the most. What should I do?
