Success Stories: How Your Comments Help People

by J. Foster

From time to time on Diet Blog, we will feature a "success story".

It's refreshing to know that there are people out there who (despite considerable hardship) still turn their life around.

Positive encouragement can inspire someone to make a change. The opposite approach is bludgeoning someone with fear and guilt - an approach that often backfires.

I was thrilled to receive this email from Lisa White. Lisa was inspired by the story of Jacob - the "400lb Marathon Man".

She writes:

I was really inspired by Jacob's story, and by the amazing feedback on your site. I was totally inspired, and decided (finally) for the first time in my life that I could change and become healthy.

Lisa decided to have a shot at the Chicago Marathon: "when I started training I could barely do a mile, I weighed 191 291 lbs, and I'm a 5'5 female."

She just ran 7 miles:

When I was done, I was in a state of euphoria. I was so sore and tired, but I wanted to cry with joy. I wanted to shout and hug all the "roid rage" guys at the gym and just go crazy.

Lisa has been keeping a blog at RunLisaRun - and is looking for a few "e-friends".

Lisa: May your efforts mark the beginning of a lifetime of pursuing health and wholeness. Your efforts will, in turn, inspire others (no pressure eh...)

Way to go, Lisa!! I, like you, started out by only being able to run about 1/2 mile at a time. I started training for a 5K and just kept running. Now I run long distances pretty easily :) It just goes to show you that anything's possible.

Did I say 191? Oops, I meant 291! I'm still in the 200's, but I'm working my way down. Guess I just had an optimistic weight slip in my e-mail, haha. Better to look toward future weights than the past, right?

Thanks so much for the inspiration and the shout out. It really does mean a lot, thank you sooo much, everyone!

I always love stories of people who really develop the desire to make the choice to follow healthy living. Good for them.
