Fit Light Yogurt: For the Larger Woman

by J. Foster

An interesting Brazilian advertising campaign for yogurt depicts larger women in familiar poses from American movies.

The message is confusing... what's your take?

The text is apparently translated as "Forget about it. Men's preference will never change. Fit Light Yogurt"

There is also an almost-naked image from American Beauty (in stark contrast to the child-like figure used in the original movie marketing material (see for yourself).

The originals?

Fit Light Yogurt is a low-calorie, fat free "yogurt" from Brazilian dairy company Itambe.

Is it supposed to be men's preference for large women or skinny? Because the originals being slimmer women would imply the latter ...

The message is: "Don't think that men will suddenly start looking for fat women... fat women weren't cast in those rolls/roles... Shape up because men prefer the originals not the plumped out version."

Since when is a normal sized woman "childlike"? Is that the next fat acceptance tactic: equating men who prefer women who are not overweight or obese to pedophiliacs?

I don't like the ad. I see the humour. But, telling women that men will never like them at the size they are, that obviously the thinner women will always be the ideal-- I find that appalling. I definately would not buy that yogurt. It implies that thin is attractive, and a larger woman cannot be attractive. Personally, I think a person can be attractive whether large or thin, and don't think either size should be mocked in ads or implied to be less.

And personally, in the American Beauty rose petal one, I prefer the larger woman version and find her to be more beautiful.

I think the "child-like" reference is to the fact that the actress (Mena Suvari) was 20 when the movie came out (so probably 18 or 19 when it was filmed) and was portraying a high school student. Reply

The ad is just trying to convince women that if they eat the yogurt, they will get skinny and guys will like them - because they sure aren't going to prefer them any other way. I doubt this would work on any woman who didn't have really low self-esteem.

I was referring more to the Lolita-esque plot. Where the woman in question was cast as a teen. Reply

I thought it was talking about preference for yogurt...maybe I'm just naive.

I just love the pictures -- if only they were for a different campaign. If these had different writing below (e.g. "With a woman like me, who needs Sharon/Marilyn/Mena?" but I'm no copywriter), they'd be so very good.

I don't think that was implied at all. I don't mean to put words into anyone's mouth, but the original actress was depicting a high school student and was deliberately portrayed as a teenager. Hence, "child-like".

Correct me if I'm wrong!

I think it's pretty darn offensive. It's saying: the idea that anyone could find these women attractive is so comical, you have to laugh! So eat your yogurt, ladies, or men will find you ridiculous too!

Of course it backfires in that the women really are attractive, at least to a lot of us. And the people who would laugh at them for being heavy just seem petty and mean.

Plus I do hope most women would have enough self esteem to focus on eating right and exercising for their own health, not to please some potential guy out there.

By now I've seen this ad on all kinds of websites where people like me get all outraged--and just give these guys more free publicity! But I can't help it, I rise to the bait every darn time.

I know. I know. Everytime some commercial comes out about heavy women I get all upset and want to fight about how there SHOULD be more commercials and yadda yadda. But as a larger woman myself, these ads don't upset me. Actually I think these women are very attractive and may be ever more so than their thinner counterparts. I don't think this ad is saying "Eat yogurt fat women so you can lose weight and be thin." I think it is just meant to say "Don't worry about what men think. They aren't ever going to change." I also believe that there is a little left out from translation. It is hard to bring to light everything that one means when crossing the language barrier. I just think that they really wanted to use heavy women and it didn't really matter what product it was going for.

I think the ad is trying to give the basic message of 'fat women, eat this yogurt then you can be thin and men will like you' because in Brazil there is a large culture culture based around being very thin and super-model like. There is a lot of pressure there to have a 'perfect' body, and they have extremely high plastic/cosmetic surgery rates.

Pedophiliacs? Also, why do you think that what you termed 'fat acceptance' is an attempt to attack men or their preferences?

I'm so confused. And wasn't Marilyn Monroe a size 12/14 anyway? I always thought she fit the voluptuous, sexy woman role. As for the Sharon Stone bit, putting a woman in a dress that doesn't fit her in the first place is just plain mean and stupid.

The message is poorly communicated. These women are beautiful. Despite the ill-put message and the fact they are beautiful, they are also dangerously obese. The message should be more positive emphasizing their health.

Nic: Apparently, Marilyn's weight at her peak was 118-130ish pounds and she was 5'5". I don't think anyone who wears a modern day size 12-14 would be anywhere near that weight. Her measurements were something like 37-23-36. Modern day clothing sizes have increased dramatically, so the argument that "Marily was a size 12" really holds no water.

Although there has been a lot of speculation that dairy products such as yogurt can help you lose weight, it may not be true. A recent study testing the effects of dairy products, specifically milk and yogurt, on the body resulted in very little weight loss in its subjects. A high dairy diet, however, did lead to a decrease in diastolic blood pressure. More clinical evidence based information is needed in this area.

I guess a size 12/14 in Marilyn's day is more like today's size 6, from what I've read.

Wow. Certainly doesn't help their point that the women in the ad are really attractive.

From what I know from Brazilian friends, the look there is lean with perky boobies and a big ol' butt. One claims that women there actually pad their jeans- not their bras- when they go to the club.

All advertising preys on people's insecurity to sell products, this campaign is just being more explicit about it. I actually prefer it to the cloying Dove "we are all beautiful the way we are" pose. And anyone who thinks the chunky Sharon Stone is sexier than the lean, toned Sharon Stone has very unusual taste.

Well, I think it's cool. They took sexy pics of thin women and recreated them using heavy women. For some reason, this world thinks that the thinner a woman is... the more perfect. And the more muscular a man is... the more perfect. i guess you just cannot get rid of it. Until fat men start looking attractive to women, then you can use obese women. But that pic of a sharon stone look a like, with her belly hanging out would have been completely criticzed if this were a male version of the whole thing. People would make fun of it or be disgusted by it, if it were a fat man imitating a sexy model/actor when recereating another scene.

Believe it or not, fat women are attractive to some. So, maybe these obese women need to go for men who are attracted to them and not be so upset that they're not represented enough. For example, I know women who are literally attracted ONLY to old, gray haired men. There are men who are not attracted to blondes and asians which are considered the most attractive women in the world (according to ridiculous polls, of course, so dont' kill me over this one). And when it comes to gay men... don't even ask me what I've encountered on this one... that's just weird all on its own. You have gay men who are transvestites and drag queens (yet they're attracted to men) and you have gay men who want old fat men (even if it's not for money)... and you have straight guys who have sex for money but are attracted to women... Ya know... this whole thing on what's considered sexy or attractive or what have you... there's revolutions going on everywhere. Just get over it. And stay away from the crazies and the trash.
