Michael Moore Weight Loss: Not So Sicko!

Whether you like or dislike Michael Moore, most people can agree that he always seems to ignite some type of controversy.
I recently heard an interview with him as he was promoting his new healthcare documentary “Sicko”. His new movie documents many of the failings of the American health care system.
It seems that the movie has already had a positive impact on at least one person - Michael Moore, himself.
He became so motivated; he hired a personal trainer for his staff and dramatically changed his diet.
In 3 months, he lost over 30 pounds and was able to lower his blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar to normal levels.
If you are curious how he did it, here are some of Michael Moore’s weight loss tips:
- Increase Your Physical Activity: Walk 30-40 minutes a day - "sweat a bit" says Moore.
- Start your breakfast each day with Oatmeal. "I eat at least 35 grams of fiber every day. Eat foods that are heavy in weight but low in calories."
- Diets? "Like every overweight person, I’ve tried everything. Weight Watchers, no white food, etc. None of them work, and they’re a huge waste of time."
- Get enough sleep. Moore believes that most overweight people do not sleep enough and now tries to sleep between 7-8 hours a night.
At least, his weight loss recommendations are not too controversial…
Yeah, I was expecting something far more controversial in fact. Those sound like solid tips.
ReplyThose are good tips but he's wrong about one thing. Not all overweight people have tried every diet. I've never been on one and am still not.
ReplyOatmeal really isn't high in fiber (5 grams of fiber per 150 calories of oatmeal).
ReplyOh, I'm relieved he's lost some weight! He was really looking ill there! (But I still think Morgan Spurlock is a better filmmaker. Sorry, Michael!)
ReplyAnyone could lose 30lbs by paying $3800/week at "The Pritikin Longevity Center And Spa" as Moore has. It's basically rehab for overweight rich people. I'm not celebrating his weight loss. Let him lose more and KEEP IT OFF like a lot of the readers here before we start fawning all over his success.
That being said, I look forward to "Sicko".
ReplyOooo!!! And PETA just wrote him a letter about how he should turn vegetarian to lose weight. Looks like they're a day late and a dollar short. Way to go Michael Moore!
Reply30 lbs. is a start.
Reply30 pounds is a great start. PETA had its heart in the right place but it was sort of a cheap PR move. I know so many skinny-fat vegetarians it's not funny.
Oats contain more soluble fiber than any other grain and have a low glycemic index, so they help to stabilize your blood sugar levels. They are a seriously kick-a$$ breakfast option.
ReplyI think Michael Moore's movies are absolutely on the money and if I had his money, I'd be laughing fat or not.
ReplyThirty pounds is a significant weight loss. To me it doesn't matter if it is Micheal Moore or any other star. One more person taking control of their weight problem is a step in the right direction for this country.
ReplyI have loved Michael Moore's films ever since I saw "Roger and Me" in 12th grade history class. Personally, I don't care what he weighs, cause it's not really my business, but it sounds like he is feeling better, so that is a good thing.
I also look forward to seeing "Sicko". It will probably be one of the movies that I actually shell out the money for, which doesn't happen often!
ReplySounds like he has a pretty good plan going for himself, but I personally can't stand the guy. I do agree with him on the oatmeal though. I LOVE the stuff and it really does keep your blood sugar stable.
ReplyLook at that, exercise a bit, eat healthy and you lose weight. It's like a miracle! :)
I have to say though that I dislike his movies. I happen to agree with his politics but his method of portraying his causes is repulsive. It's the documentary equivalent of saying "this one guy lost weight on a diet of all shrimp! So of course everyone else should or else they're lousy good for nothing losers!"
Anyway, just my two cents.

ReplyA friend, who was in acting, told me that "You remember the really good and the really bad. No one remembers the average." Michael Moore has learned to create both extremes with his work.
ReplyHonestly, those tips are sooooo basic, even a little child could give....
ReplyI think that it is great that Michael Moore has decided to lose weight and get healthy. I have never seen his movies and I honestly could care less either way. But what I can't stand is PETA. They are a useless organization that I find hurts animal rights instead of helping them. PETA is a joke. Not eating meat will not always ensure that you are thin and healthy. It think that the article that was posted on here about just how fattening the veggie choices can be proves that. So for them to outwardly attack a person based solely on personal choice is ridiculous. We can't walk around calling other people racial slurs, or hating gays and lesbians but it is okay for a grand standing group to publicly insult a person based on weight and the foods you eat if you don't believe in their concept of what is right? Does that seem wrong to anyone else but me? And no I am NOT saying that spreading hate in ANY form is okay. I just always get a sad amusement out of the fact that one form of hate is accepted and still promoted in our society.
ReplyFYI: PETA advocates a vegetarian diet because animals suffer profoundly in modern day factory farming. They are trying to educate the public about the horrible abuse that animals undergo by asking for celebrities to help gain attention to their message. Many if not all people would adopt a vegetarian diet if they knew the facts.
ReplyBased on his tips, it looks like he's seriously motivated by the movie. Other controversial diet have lousy and unbelievable statements.
ReplyOatmeal IS high in fiber 5 grams is pretty high for that calorie count
ReplyGood Going Michael.
You are one of the few news people that I know of that goes to the extremes to make the world "sit up and notice" the true about government, laws, without lies to the media.
Please stay healthy so you can KEEP ON KEEPING ON.

Reply>> I know so many skinny-fat vegetarians it's not funny.
Most vegetarians I know are either skinny-fat, overweight where the excess weight is fat, or obese. The two vegetarians I know who aren't overfat consume lots of (expensive) whey shakes.
ReplyPETA = People for the Eating of Tasty Animals
That sleep tip is gold. I remember once, while cutting down some fat, I'd stalled even though everything was still spot on. Everything except for my sleep, as I'd only gotten about 4 hours for a couple nights in a row. Once I went back to getting 7 or 8 hours, the fat loss kicked off again and continued.
ReplyCongrats on the diet plan, Mike - but, did you follow the most basic advice for those starting out on any diet plan? Did you check with your "Sicko" doctor first??
ReplyNo. 1: "Skinny fat." What does this mean?
No. 2: I saw "Sicko." After any Moore film I'm really like someone who drank the Kool-Aid, and then after a few days I start to say, "but only if he'd have done this." Moore raises the level of debate on issues we as a country are afraid to approach. You may not like his high-handedness, or seeming need to put himself in the picture more than is necessary, or his ability to gloss over the negatives where expedient (all are true) but he does a valuable service with his films. And they're funny and informative at the same time. I highly recommend the film.
No. 3: Yes, they are simple tips, but he's not a nutritionist and isn't putting out a book. It's just what worked for him. And probably would work for many others.
ReplySkinny fat is where one has little body mass but is not lean. They are in fact still over fat and lacking in general fitness. They are skinny, but weak and soft.
This is often what happens to one who loses weight without paying attention to what they are losing. Instead of losing just fat, they have lost muscle as well, and have become merely smaller versions of their same fat selves.
ReplyGood for him. With the extreme effect of the movie, he'll probably go a long way. Most people who get motivated usually don't last long because of the temptations.
ReplyI hope he at least knows to use slow cooking oats.
ReplyBeing vegetarian/vegan does not ensure weight loss. Though it does work if you keep your portion sizes down and eat whole, heathy foods. But then again any diet even one that has meat in it will do the same if you watch what you eat.
Its good to see a celebrity touting about how healthy oatmeal is. I love slow cook oatmeal for breakfast. Its so healthy and it really does help you lose weight. It fills you up and keeps you from being hungry until lunch so you aren't tempted by the junk in the vending machine. ^^
ReplyI've read that bit about adequate sleep in a few places now, so there's gotta be something to it. That's a big issue for me. :o( I find it very hard to sleep, especially as I get a bit older (I'm a doddering 35) and as my menstrual cycle goes through its paces.
ReplyWay to go Michael! I'm happy for him.
ReplyNo. The more sleep you get, the less fat you can burn.
You do not burn very many calories by laying on your fat ass and breathing.
The less sleep you get, the better for you're weight.
Although, if you spend all your time eating when you're awake, thats different.
6-8 hours is perfect.
ReplyI disagree with him saying that not eating white processed products wouldn't help lose weight bc it would.
ReplyI can't stand his views, but his diet advice is right on the money. good for him.
ReplyGreat job Michael!
ReplyOne word in reply to his advice: DUH!!
