Egg Commercial Banned: Too Unhealthy
The UK egg industry has been banned from airing commercials called "Go to Work on an Egg". The TV ads were used in the 1950s to promote egg consumption.
The British ad watchdog Ofcom stated:
"This concept of eating eggs every day for breakfast unfortunately goes against what is now the generally accepted advice of eating a varied diet. We therefore could not approve the ads for broadcast." (src)

Political correctness rears its ugly head.
We get ads for Coke, Burger King, McDonald's, countless sugary cereals, and a myriad of other junk foods - but the humble egg once again is scorned.
I could almost feel sorry for the UK Egg Industry - if it weren't for the practice of using battery cages (more).
More like this in Media Watch

You are right. This is bizarre. So you can advertise foods full of artificial additives, flavourings, colourings, fat, transfats, sugar, and goodness knows what else... i've seen chocolate spread being advertised as "lower in fat than peanut butter" and "lower in sugar than jam".... and similiar claims for some sugary breakfast cereals... now personally i would rather have a slice of whole grain toast and a free-range organic egg than a bowl of nutri grain or chocolate cereal. but thats just me
ReplyI can't believe that Ofcom can actually say something like that without laughing out loud.
I'd like to know what Ofcom has to say about ads for McDonalds, soft drinks, etc.

Replyit has been a long controversy about the egg- but this, by far, blows every other ideal out the window as far as media goes. even marketing has become more moronic than ever.
ReplyThe Bible says an egg is a good gift. What a twisted world we live in.
ReplyBut you can go to work on an egg mcmuffin, right? Cause those are part of a varied diet.
This is sick.
ReplyI don't see it as a big deal, a little double-standardized, but commercials don't decide what I do and don't have for breakfast.
ReplyQuite ironic that the killer drug sugar can continue to be pushed, but the egg is swatted off the air.
It is very sad re: the battery cages, and I do eat a lot of egg whites. From what I understand though, the eggs I purchase are not being laid by mistreated chickens.
ReplyDoesn't Special K advertise in the same way "every day for breakfast"? And they even get away with weight loss claims. I wonder if these advertisements are allowed in the UK.
(BTW, I eat three eggs for breakfast every morning.)
ReplyRidiculous! So long as your overall diet contains enough variety to cover your nutrition bases, there's nothing wrong with having the same thing for breakfast. People have lived on a few staples, healthily, for millenia. I thought everyone had gotten over the egg phobia.
ReplyThis CrAzY!!! EgGs are better than ALL the GaRbAgE that they sell now days!!! Fast food for instance is definantly NOT good for you!!!
ReplyTo gain muscle, use milk and eggs. To lose fat, use steak and eggs. I consider (properly raised) eggs to be one of the top foods out there for optimal health and fitness.
ReplyThis is moronic. Eggs contain all sorts of essential nutrients, and I believe people SHOULD eat them every day. What about taking multivitamins everyday? Is that "unhealthy"?
ReplyHa, Kailash...I was just thinking the same exact thing about the cereal. Most cereal companies encourage you to eat a bowl of cereal and milk for breakfast every day...not a lot of variety there. Plus, eggs are one of the most nutritionally complete foods there is so even if you do eat eggs for breakfast every day, you could be doing a lot worse. How many people out there have say, a donut every day? Or a mocha-latte-frappuccino or a can of soda for breakfast every day?
Our world's priorities are sure screwed up sometimes.
ReplyJust read this article about four health and diet myths. Number one debunks the myth that eating eggs leads to high cholesterol. Maybe those Brits doing the egg-bashing need to read up!

ReplyI've always been told, if your healing.... eat an egg. After surgery? Eat egg. Break a bone? Eat an egg.
Replyi make an omelet every day. two cage free omega 3 eggs with loads of veggies and a tiny sprinkle of low fat cheese with a slice of whole wheat toast. this is very filling so while my co-workers are snacking before lunch on all kinds of junk i am still full.
ReplyHow about another classic advert "a Mars [bar] a day helps you to work, rest and play..". I'm sure an egg a day would be a far better option!
There has been a lot of backlash about this over here in the UK with all the papers/news programmes etc saying how ridiculous Ofcom's statements are.
ReplyI wonder what goes on in minds of those British people who banned the egg commercials. They have a weird sense of reasoning.
ReplyI'm a big Tony Hancock fan, so I'm disappointed by the refusal to show these old adverts.
ReplyThere was some discussion that actually, the advert wasn't advocating having an egg every day. The slogan is 'go to work..' which indicates five eggs a week. Which by any standards, isn't too much. Like the other posts have said, we can have Burger King and MacDonalds advertise all day every day, but eggs are verboten ?
Dumb.
I also think it wouldn't affect our decisions, especially in choosing what to eat. Egg is one of the most popular choice in our breakfast and banning a commercial about egg is certainly negligible.
