Fruit and Vegetables For Weight Loss

Most diets focus on what you should not eat, and some diets count the calories you should eat, but a better approach is to focus on eating good foods.

Researchers found that overweight adults who were instructed to focus on lower-calorie foods lost more weight than those who were simply told to cut their overall calories.

The researchers at the Pennsylvania State University, said that fruits and vegetables have low "energy density" because they are heavy by weight but low in calories.

Their study included 658 healthy men and women divided into two groups.

  • Group 1: Told to eat 9 to 12 daily servings of fruits and vegetables and 2 to 3 servings of low-fat dairy.
  • Group 2: Told to reduce calorie intake, but were not given goals for fruit, vegetable and dairy intake.

Those who made the greatest reductions in the energy or calorie density of their diets lost an average of 13 pounds over 6 months. Those who made the smallest reduction in energy lost 5 pounds over the same period.

I try to include as many fruits and vegetables in my diet because I like the filling sensation. I also believe that consuming more more fresh foods will increase the intake of fiber, vitamins and minerals.

So which one do you prefer: one pizza for lunch and starving for the rest of the day or a lot of salads and fresh fruits whenever you feel hungry?

Lose Weight With Me

I think one of the keys to my weight loss success was the fact that I limited grains and greatly increased fruits and veggies.

What I found interesting is that as I increased the fruits and veggies, the more I craved them and not the fatty, greasy foods I had been eating.

i agree with LWWM. when i am eating more fresh foods as opposed to something processed, sealed, and boxed, i find myself craving more of the same. as soon as i started integrating more fruits and veggies into my diet, my dropped pounds like crazy!

Me too! I've stocked up on a wide variety of frozen vegetables, including mixed vegetables that I fry up any combination I like in a teaspoon of virgin olive oil - 5 minutes. They are crisp and filling, taste great and I feel so much better than if I had a couple slices of pizza. Exercising and really boosting my vegetables has helped me lose 15 pounds so far.

It's so much more effective for any kind of goal setting to have it be specific - so yes, having a goal of vegetables 5 times a day is going to guide each food choices better than simply saying "I'm going to eat better" or "I should each more vegetables and fruits."

This is the core philosophy behind the Volumetrics diet...

As a diet plan, Volumetrics is not sexy at all - there are no banned foods, there are no magic micronutrients, and there are no appeals to Darwin, God, or any celebrities. It's about thinking about what you eat, what makes you feel satiated, and trading off more calorie dense food for less calorie dense food.

I'm with Brian. Replacing starchy, refined and sugary or HFCS loaded carbs with produce is the easiest way to improve health and lose weight. Did you all see the blurb in Time this week about the farm bill? Evidently fruits and vegetables are not subsidized and are considered a "specialty" crop industry - which makes the recommendations of the new pyramid seem a bit disingenuous. Policy needs to be aligned with education if we want any results.

Mark, I think you're referring to an older article, but yes, that was quite an eye opener. Essentially, by subsidizing five crops (corn, wheat, soy and I forget the other two) we are making unhealthy food cheap. At the same time, fruit and vegetables are high priced.

So while I prefer healthier foods that fill me up, my wallet prefers to the calorie to dollar ratio of unhealthy foods like corn products and meat. This is something I feel we should address at a federal level. If our government wants to reduce obesity and national health care costs, they should start by stopping subsidies on unhealthy foods. We could even save some money that way :)

Anyway, sorry for the political rant, my inner activist got the better of me.

Wow, wouldn't it be great if red peppers and cucumbers were less expensive than twinkies and hot dogs! A girl can only dream.

Fruits and vegetables are really wonderful. Increasing our daily intake of fruits and vegies is indeed a great idea for weight loss. Not to mention that they are one of sources of healthy foods.

Hi,
I came across this blog while googling for "eating healthy" and found I quite liked it.
I am an Indian woman who was desperately trying to lose weight that I had gained, thanks to a cushy office job. After trying all sorts of fad diets the best advise that came my way was: "eat healthy and in moderation, and EXERCISE."
So, I resorted to the following and it has helped me lose 6 kilos in two weeks that I have managed to keep off.
Breakfast: A cup of oatmeal or 2 idlis and a fruit
Mid-morning snack: A bowl of salads (sprouts, cucumber, carrots, raw mango for flavour)
Lunch: Two rotis (whole wheat kind), a bowl of sabzi and a glass of fresh juice
Evening snack:A bowl of fruits (except bananas)..usually stick to apples and papayas and mangoes (when available)
Dinner: Two rotis, sabzi, a glass of buttermilk (sometimes i vary this with a cup of rice and plain dal).
And of course, I take my dog for a long walk in the mornings and nights:-)
Let me know if any of you have more ideas on staying healthy.

60 in 30 - Hmm, might be old. Thought it was my latest issue that I was looking at, but I'll check. At any rate, I love your political rant! ;) We need to be doing more of it if we want the government's actions to be internally consistent and in the best interest of public health.

I think variation of foods that we eat maybe the key for successful diet program, so we not bored to eat fruits or vegetables

I know I lost 4 pounds in one week just by adding fruits or veges to each meal, (I didn't change anything else, including continuing to eat my junk food). Lynda

I hit a plateau during a recent diet, but when I started concentrating on getting a minimum of 4-5 fruits/veggies per day (whereas before I was primarily concentrating on cutting fat & calories), I started to lose again.

Lia: If you are 48kg (105 lb), yet truly have an over-fat abdomen, then you are likely "all fat and no muscle". That happens quite often with needless calorie restriction and a lack of activity. If you want to have a better body composition, you'll need to lift weights. Not lose weight, as you can't lose any more. But lift weights, and change yourself from a fat store into a fat burner. You can turn yourself around from being "skinny fat". I did it myself.

I have been on Weigh Watches for over a year..I'm down to my last 11 pounds and the scale will not move. I eat about 1200 calories a day. I was reading and came across a girl that ate 1200 a day that offered dairy, Whole grains, fruit and veggies, lean meat. Then just two days a week she ate just fruit/veggie and little to no dairy. Has anyone try this or heard of this? I'm starting today and I will post the findings later. I just hope this just don't came back and bit me later!

Over the summer (before I started dieting) I never thought to eat fruits and vegies. Once I started eating more fruit and veggies the pounds almost started melting off...of course, I also excercised. Before summer I was 5'0" almost 120 lb and now I'm 5'0" 100lbs. I didn't eat/drink too much dairy though,,,I've never really like it. :[ But Fruits & Vegetable sure helped me lose that 20 lbs~ :]

Lia, Have you had your Thyroid checked by a doctor. This could be the reason for the excess weight.

Its winter, and due to stress, i ate junk food like crazy. Thanks to that, i put on an extra 6pounds. So now, instead of grabbing a snack, I grab an orange.

And i watch what i eat, no oily stuffs, no fried food, no refined sugar, no white breads, no dressings and definitely no more junk food. I manage to loose 2pounds on tthe 1st week, but yet my face is getting chubby. Any suggestion on what i did wrong?

I WAS ADDICTED TO SUGAR, AND I WAS CONSTANTLY HUNGRY. AT WORK, I WOULD INEVITABLY REACH FOR THE CANDY.

I STARTED TO CARRY ALL KINDS OF FRUIT WITH ME. I WOULD CUT ORANGES, GRAPEFRUIT, ETC.

AS SOON AS THE HUNGER STARTED, I WOULD REACH FOR THE FRUIT. THE POUNDS STARTED TO COME RIGHT OFF.
