Old Navy: Plus-size Clothing Taken Off Shelves

Old Navy is a clothing brand own by Gap Inc. Up until very recently, Old Navy offered the "Women's Plus" line of clothing in 175 stores.
Old Navy have now decided to remove the clothes from the shelves - and make them available online only.
Sizes 16 to 20 will still be carried in store, but sizes 22, 24, and 26 will be online only.
"We really wanted to showcase the Plus collection and felt the best place to do that effectively was online," said Gap spokeswoman Robin Carr. (source)
So that's the market-speak - but what is the real reason - simple economics or something more?
Thanks Jarrett

To all those that have a problem with us big girls that means you have a problem within yourself. We love ourselves and I get alot of my clothes from old navy. I've seen pictures of some of you that made comments you need to look inside your own window and see if you like what you see within yourself. I am a thick woman that loves herself at all times no matter who don't like it. Old Navy took a long time to get the plus size clothing in but I thank them for that because now iI don't have to come oout my pocket thirty or more for a shirt. So for those that are being haters suck it up and move on. As the saying goes DON'T HATE THE PLAYER HATE THE GAME!!!!!!!!!!!!

Morning,
I never post on these sites, but I wanted to add some outside input. I am an average size but petite. Short people get the same treatment. It must have to do with the bottom line. I'm sorry Old Navy removed their expanded collection from there stores, but my guess they removed it for the same reason they only carry petites online, Banana Republic (same company) also only carries "specialty sizes online" Feeling your frustration.

ReplyI suppose if you lived in the southern US states, where there are larger percentages of overweight people, plus sizes would be in higher demand and therefore, less plus size clothing would be available in the clearance rack.
Anyways I call BS on the complaint that Old Navy caters to the so-called skinny people. Vanity sizing is rampant and alive at Old Navy. I've worn a size XS my entire life (5'6", 110lbs), except that I can't shop at Old Navy anymore because their XS is now sized like a size Small or even Medium. Old Navy can deny the fact that they're doing vanity sizing until they're blue in the face, but that doesn't change the fact that I can't fit into a size XS because it's too d*mn big. They introduced a size XXS a year or two ago, but limited to certain basic tops.
I live in Silicon Valley. There are few overweight upper middle-class women here. Also, there are a lot of skinny Asian women such as myself who love to shop a lot. Size XS is actually fairly difficult to find as a result.
So for all you overweight people, I know what it feels like to not be able to find clothing that fits. But if you're obese, I have no pity for you--quit complaining and lose some weight!
Replysaying that you find overweight people more in the southern US states, is not a fact! And Not That I am from the Southern US States. People all over the US are either "skinny", "thin", "overweight", "obese" etc, etc, etc....All your doing by making that comment is discriminating!!! Also for you to tell people who are obese to stop complaining and to lose weight you sound so obnoxious!!! People come in all different shapes and sizes and you are judging people for what they look like on the outside. Besides people who are overweight and/or obese could have some kind of medical problem that causes them to be that way.
ReplyWhat a bummer, almost all of my clothes are from old navy, and it was the only store around that has size 18-20 jeans and it was hard to find them in stock because they would only have a couple and they went fast...even my target and walmart have hardly anything over a 16.
I find it's only this way in rural oregon, I've been to other states and was amazed at the plus size selection! they even have teen plus sized clothes-but not where I live...all they ever carry is giant floral print things...I thing they are trying to make you feel guilt and ugly for being fat...
sad day.
ReplyI just finished alot my Christmas gift shopping online at the Old Navy site... I went there to look at the Plus size line after my grown daughter got 2 of the nicest dresses and a really cute pair of shoes from ON last week... She was so happy and looked so nice that I just had to go look... I am also a plus size person... but not much for ordering clothes... The site was so nice and so easy to move around in... I jumped around from all departments... not just plus... looked at women... men... tall men... boy... girl... toddler girl and toddler boy... was alot of fun... got sweaters... tee-shirts... vests... hoodies... and even a backpack for one young nephew... The prices were great... I looked at the sale section and found something for most on my list... not junk... things that I know each person will wear and enjoy... I only went into the Old Navy store with my grandaugher who is average size or when looking for a gift... so didn't know about plus sizes being in the store to be pulled out... guess I missed that one... oh well... you all have a happy holiday and get a grip... life is too short to stress on things you can't change...
ReplyI am a manager @ Old Navy in one of the older stores. I do not have the space to house every item in every size. Online allows customers to have access to a larger selection. Pulling the Plus line was a business decision. If it was making money do you really think it would have been pulled from the stores? No one is trying to make feel unwanted but if you do not fit the norm you have to understand it will be a challenge to find clothes that fit, be that short, tall, or plus.
ReplyWhat exactly is the "norm?" Old Navy is just added on to the other clothing stores that is discriminating against people who wear plus size's...Think about it? Your doing what most clothing stores are doing? I am sure people of plus size also shopped at your store and would have shopped at your store if you didn't do away with the plus sizes...think about them coming to your store and shopping there, wouldn't that do good for your store and it would being in business?? :-/
ReplyYea like it's easy enough to find plus sizes in stores that fit us ,yet having to order only plus sizes online calls for a lot of hassel...What if we recive the wrong size or the size we ordered doesn't fit alot of extra work then it already is just trying to find them in the stores.
ReplyI'm a size 18/20 or 22/24 depending on the clothes, and I shopped constantly at Old Navy. I'm nineteen years old- I don't want to shop at Lane Bryant, their target age is 25 and older, and I don't want to shop at Torrid, because it seems they enjoy the hoochie I want to be sixteen forever look. I'm not a business woman or a high school student- I'm a college student. Old Navy was the only store that had clothes appropriate for my age, in the styles that I liked. I'm so disappointed that I can only shop online. Because it's true, even for thin people- something that looks good in a picture may look horrible on your body. And returning things all the time because they don't fit not to mention the shipping cost is a pain in the butt.
ReplyI thought that old navy was finally a "considerate of others" store they have nice clothes and yeah up until recently they didnt discriminate against plus size people unlike their flagship stores. This news to me is unbeleivable how can you shop for something online and not know how it really fits. why the hell should all the people with cookie cutter bodies be able to shop in peace while "big people" have to go through online hassle. its just not fair. why offer something but not be able to have it in store and on demand? what next a big person cant shop for their own kids in their store because what, they have some image that they are supposed to uphold. who the hell is old navy they act like they are some type of members only store. they are a discount clothing store if you look at it they're just trying to be snobbish just like the gap and banana republic. well they are gona lose a lot of costomers. its just a dam shame big people are beautiful and alot of them love to shop. old navy doesnt want to respect the fact that "big people" money is green like everyone elses then SCREW THEM.
ReplyI cant beleive that there are still girls that can be so mean about others being "big" the people that have crap to talk about "big" people need to keep in mind that a big girl can whoop your a**.
ReplyYou gotta be some anorexic b. think about what you say before you say it cuz if you havent really noticed being a size zero makes you look sick and like you are falling apart. maybe you are just upset cause you have no body at all and look like something someone can iron their clothes on.
Reply
people who are overweight shouldn't need to go to a different "special" store to begin with. The are human and they do have feelings as well. Yes, it is true that most stores don't hold clothing that large, but big whoop. that needs to change immediately.
Being large doesn't mean that you cant be stylish and fashionable. It just means that you have your own way of showing you.
Its not bad being large, its a way of life that NEEDS to be accepted. Not all people choose that for themselves. and not all want to go to a special store to buy their clothing. They are just like everyone else, just a bit larger.
So stop putting labels on them.
And i do think that Old Navy should be ashamed and people should be mad.
Reply
i for one loooove old navy clothing stores. i am glad that they are at least keeping the plus sizes on-line because as a child children's self esteem suffers so much when they have the weight problems with so much junk foods they are exposed to. so it's nice that a company whom is such "desireable" trends is still available for the larger size teens. so they can look fashionable and still salvage self-esteem while they deal with the weight issues as they go along. good move on the part of old navy stores i think.
ReplyI do think this is a discriminatory move on Old Navy's part. Basically what it means is that if I want ON clothes in my size, I have no choice but to pay that extra $5 for shipping. Granted, $5 isn't a huge fortune, but the bottom line is: I have no choice in the matter (other than to not buy from ON at all--which stinks, because they are one of the few places that makes age-appropriate plus size clothing that doesn't make me look like a frumpy old grandma).
It's basically like having a "fat tax", and I *do*
find that offensive.
I went to my local ON store today and asked if they still sold plus sizes there. The skinny little girl who attemped to "help" me did not have a CLUE what I was talking about. She apparently has never even heard of plus sizes... how pathetic. I found that a tad insulting too, and walked out of the store, with her still bewildered as to what I was looking for.
ReplyAs for the "why are you fat" comments... you know what, I'm NOT fat. I have a large frame, large hips, wide shoulders, and a large chest, and also a good deal of muscle mass. It is how I'm built. I could be technically anorexic, and I *still* wouldn't fit into those tiny skinny clothes made for stick-people... my bones just won't allow it.
People are shaped in many different ways, and it's not all necessarily due to fat.
ReplyMLE "There is a massive plus size market just waiting to be catered to. I think thats why I've made it my life goal to make my own clothing line."
ReplyMe too!! I just know I'll make a fortune because there's very little here designed for fleshy women, especially if you're short.
Considering the current hysteria about obesity and the fact that the majority of the population is overweight you'd think the clothing companies would work it out.
Honestly I think that Old Navy got rid of the Plus Size Section because it did not sell well. I think it didn't sell well because they did not advertise it correctly and they did not have good choice options. They hid the section in the back of the stores near clearance and often did not have enough variety to make you want to look. As far a space goes.....If the store had room for Maternity, Mens, Women's, Girls, Babies, but not plus....Something is DEF. WRONG with that picture. I do like the turn around of the selection offered on-line but I would like to be able to try on items before purchasing them. I also think that the plus-size section isnt always priced correctly. I understand the concept of charging more when you have to use more fabric but when you compare the maternity section to regular women's section, the price seems to almost be the same.
If Old Navy does not bring its plus-size section back to its stores, I think that it will fail. People no matter what size you are like to try clothes on and feel the material before making a purchase. When you eliminate that option, you will eventually hurt your wallet!
ReplyI know this is old but I just had to comment!
ReplyI work at Old Navy, and I'm a bigger girl. I, however, did not mind when they stopped carrying the plus sized line, nor was I surprised. We didn't sell much plus-sized clothing at all, and we just ended up putting almost all of it on clearance half the time. I'm not saying that it's all about the money, but this is a business, a corporation, and let's face it: making profit is the main goal almost ANYWHERE you go.
how do you figure the best way to "showcase" ur plus size line is online??? big people do go shopping u know. its just a disgrace every store u go in there is a "plus size" sign, but under it you find one rack of clothes. that NoOnE would want to be caught dead it. i dont understand. there are so many larger people in the world. probably more than "skinny" so why aren't there clothes for us? its a disgrace and it makes me sick. needless to say. i will never shop there.
ReplyNot to long ago I use to be a size 10.That is when I could wear Old Navys clothes. For the plus sizes at Old Navy they are nothing to look at to be honest they look tired and old. Old Navy's clothes are cheap looking and the prices sky rocked just like everything else. Ladies and gentlemen, if you wanna look like a million bucks and your a plus size, don't shop at Old navy anyway you can buy the same stuff at other good name stores for a lesser price and much much better quailty. In my opinion..Thanks have a great day and don't sweat the small stuff!!
ReplyThis isn't just recient, this has been going on sense 03,I had gone into the Old Navy store where I live in TX South, and saw no plus size clothing.
ReplyI am sick of these store discriminating agasint me personally because I am a junior plus size woman, you can't find good bra's that have no support, they are discriminating against pluse size women. Personally I won't waste my time after this, I am tired of these stores discriminating against me because I have large feet and a big bottom and brest to go with it,not all women are made small if I have to make my own clothing line this is the beginning of encouragement to do so. Not all women in this world are a size 12 and under. But for damn sure, they won't get any of my business online or in the store until these stores start having a better attitude towards women my size. So I encourage all plus size women, put your voice out there, because they charge us more money for our clothes and shoes, then we should be treated better, no, instead they treat plus size women like its a bad thing, they are brain washed thinking some how they are better becasue they are smaller, and we let them do it. We need to change a lot of attitudes from these women who are small which run these businesses and discriminate agasint me because I don't have a size a cup in bra, or I am a size 4, its women doing to women, that is the sad part about it. Stand up plus size women, tell the clothing world we are not going to take it any more. MLK taught us if we stand together no matter who you are, what color you are, we can acomplish a lot.
Simple economics. If no one is buying the clothes they aren't going to sell them. If old navy was making money hand over fist of the clothes I think they would look for ways to promote the line as opposed to demoting it.
ReplyI think your comment is very rude and inconsiderate of people like me that have a medical condition that makes it very hard to lose weight. I have been a normal size six my entire life. In the past 3 years, I have gained an enormous amount of weight and have a hard time losing it due to my medical condition.
At 26 years old, do I not deserve to have cute clothes to wear?
I should not have to order all of my clothes on the internet with very minimal choices of styles and websites that even offer cute plus size clothing.
ReplyI had a friend come from another country and she was amazed, I mean AMAZED at how many fat people there are in america. I never thought about it until now and now I am thinking why is america that fattest country in this world. And why is everyone taking it personally that they took the plus size close off the racks. It's business it's not personal, let me tell you something if they were selling the clothes they wouldn't have taken it off the racks...and you probably never shopped there and not this hits the media and everyone goes mad over it. Don't be so upset over it maybe they will bring it back.
ReplyI was really upset when I was visited Old Navy, last week. They no longer carry size 18. I've been looking for stylish clothing for years, with little luck. Unfortunately, ON was the only storefront I could walk into and find what I wanted.
I am really upset about this blatent prejudice against anybody larger than a 14! I have gone as far as to try to find stores, overseas, to buy from, BUT,...guess what? Apparently, nobody over a size 10 (U.S. size) exit!!!!
I am disgusted. If somebody like Oprah had to go out to find her size, she would be wearing plastic garbage gabs on tv!
I cannot afford to hire somebody to sew for me, as the material is really expensive, now,...and I do not have time for fittings. Usually, fittings require three times in order to get the proper fit.
I wish I could figure out a way to find a factory, in China (where all the clothing is made for the entire planet), and re-size their patterns to allow for larger sizes.
WE LIKE LOOKING GOOD TOO!!!
I'm tall too, so I have double trouble. I give up. If the manufacturers cannot see their noses in front of their faces, there's little we can do.
Go to the mall, the majority of women are over a size 14, and they look awful. I feel truly bad for us. This is prejudice.....BIG TIME!!!
ReplySorry,...when I was referring to Oprah,..I meant to say she would be wearing plastic garbage bags on tv,...not gags. Sorry :).
ReplyMy sincere reguards go out to all of the "PLUS" size community who have been swept right out the door, and discarded into the circular round of the world wide web. You are being groomed to forfet your right and delight in proper fit, with an abundant inventory available at your finger tips to chose from. No more touchy, feely for you, as your needs are of no concern to the corporate world as they are striving to dazzle, draw and deliver to only their customers of which they estem of higher financial value at the end of their quarterly report. I intend to make a great effort in changing this corporate practice, as I, myself, begin to design and create clothing for the plus size community. My true desire always is to meet a need with dedication that can inspire, motivate, and build confidence. I invite any comments that would be of benefit.

ReplyAs a plus sized gal, I give every store a try or two or three as I have with Old Navy. But I stopped going there right away because they've never had any plus sizes in my city. (over a million people) I'm with Emma, if you are going to be inconsistent about which stores you stock plus sizes, you might as well not stock them at all. I travel around the country regularly and I don't go to ANY OL stores because I had no idea that SOME have/had plus sized clothing. Do they think that fat people only live in certain areas?? What foolish marketing, no wonder it doesn't sell. Duh.
ReplyI can tell you at least from my experience with the Old Navy Plus Size line that they stocked/purchased/ordered etc. too much of each item. I often shopped at my local Old Navy once they brought in the plus sizes (I used to drive 2.5 hours to the next state) and I got some amazing deals all the while thinking this will never last. The reason being, they would have dozens left of one item when the newest styles were coming in. As a result I would buy countless shirts, tees, capri's etc. for under $10.00. This made me love ON that much more but I also knew it couldn't be profitable for me to buy a blazer type jacket for $6.99. You actually see much the same bargains online. So I applaud ON for trying to bring plus sizes to the stores albeit the smallest section of the store and I'm thrilled they still offer plus sizes online which by the way go up to a 4X shirt and 30 pant and can be returned at a store. What drives me crazy is knowing those returns are out there somewhere and I wouldn't know where to start finding them. One last thing, I don't believe enough plus size women knew Old Navy sold plus sizes in the store and maybe don't even know about online. Until I lost weight and became an 18/20 I never even bothered stepping foot into Old Navy due to being conditioned to thinking if it's trendy it's not my size.
ReplyGive ON a break...
To the morons who say "lose some weight"..you're, well, MORONS. Not everyone who needs "plus" sizes is overweight: some people are naturally built larger, meaning their FRAME... some in better shape than all the pompous skinny bitches posting on this blog. Some people are overweight dispite eating small healthy portions and exercising: look up hypothyroidism, which is incredibly common.
Being anorexic (which is what designers frankly choose to create clothes for: they've even refused to require a healthy BMI on their models after many have dropped dead on the run way from anorexia) is just as unhealthy, if not more so, than being overweight. We aren't talking about clothes for the small population of morbidly obese people... we're talking about people with a bit of a tummy, or hips, or larger breasts... you know, the way women looked before they started puking meals up.
It isn't discriminating? They pulled them from the shelves in Canada too. If it was poor for business simply because they weren't selling enough, they wouldn't be selling them at all anymore. UNfortunately for us in Canada, we can't buy online now either.. they won't ship them to Canada. So yeah, we get royally fucked over. Why should we not be able to shop at the same stores as everyone else? I'm 20, I don't want to go to stores that specifically carry larger sizes... they're all designed for older people, they aren't my style at all. There is huge demand for these clothes in larger sizes.

Just want to let all of you girls know about a store called Torrid. This is mainly a plus size store that understands a plus size woman's body and needs, as EVERYTHING in the store is made plus size...shoes, lingerie, jewelry etc. Also this store understands that even though we are plus size we still want to feel sexy and the clothing here allows that. I shop in store and online all the time and I am always satisfied with everything I purchase. So for anyone on here who is looking to find cute sexy clothing to celebrate the woman they are I urge you to TRY THIS STORE-you wont be let down! I have seen this store in only a few malls so go to the website and you should be able to find one around where you live...www.Torrid.com
ReplyOld Navy actually carries 0-20 and XS-XXL in store so they oviously don't mind "fat people" in their store. It's the the maternity section, if something isn't selling as much they're going to remove it to allow room for the product that sells. The next time you enter an Old Navy, you'll notice the Women's section is larger than the Men's due to the fact Women's sells more. Same with the Girls, Boys and Babies. Old Navy has nothing against plus sizes. They support healthy lifestyles and eco-friendly prodcts!
ReplyWow...I am shocked that you people act this way. Glad I did not come across this site any earlier. I used to work for Old navy...and guess what...i'm FAT. Get over yourselves ppl. Maybe if you all worked for the company you would all know why they took plus size clothes out of the stores. My store was one who had it in their store for one and loooved shopping from it! And the only reason it was taken out of stores was because it was only doing .4% of business for Gap Inc. when our womens section does 60% of our business. And ya know what I did when they took it out...wow...I bought stuff in the womens section. Yes, this country has more fat ppl in it than any other country, but if it bothers you that much you have to purchase your clothes online....then LOOOOOOSE WEIGHT! You are the only ones who control what your body looks like and where you can buy clothes. So quite bashing a company that you have no clue what is going on within the company itself. Not only do they sell womens plus size online only, but mens too! Do you hear men complaining about that?! NOPE! Must be a womanly...self conscience thing...so like i said lose weight then if you are all so unhappy!
ReplySomething else that Old Navy may not be taking into consideration is this....
ReplyUs plus size moms shop at stores that we enjoy. If we find clothing that is in our size that we like, chances are that we will also be picking up other items for our family at that very same store.
So yes maybe our clothes take up a little more room, and don't sell as fast; however how much revenue are we bringing into your other departments? I buy my three children, and my husbands clothes partially at Old Navy, but after they have taken the plus size section out, I will not. Maybe they should have advertised a little more to let people know that they carry pluse size clothes. Honestly I only found out because a friend told me. Most of us plus size people have become used to the fact that our name brands that we love do not carry our sizes. If more women knew, their revenue would go up.
Shame on you OLD NAVY....you didn't put enough effort, and gave in too fast.
